The safest approach depends on where you want the change to apply. To clean an existing item in an iPhone or iPad library, open it in Photos and choose Adjust Info > Adjust Location > No Location. To send a copy without location while leaving your library item alone, use the Share Sheet’s Options > Location switch. To stop new camera images from receiving GPS tags, disable the camera’s location setting or remove its location permission. Android menu names vary by manufacturer. Google Photos adds another distinction: it can edit some locations that the service estimated or that you entered, but a location written by the camera can remain in a downloaded original.
Removing a file’s location fields also cannot hide clues visible in the scene. Check signs, landmarks, house numbers, views and other recognizable details before you send the image.

Choose the scope before you change anything
“Remove location from a photo” can mean three different operations. They affect different copies and have different privacy results, so select the one that matches your sharing plan.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
| Goal | Where the location lives | Control to use | What changes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Clean an existing library item | Metadata attached to the photo in your device’s photo library | Use the library’s location-removal command | The selected library item is changed; other exports or duplicates may still contain their own metadata |
| Send one copy without location | Metadata in the outgoing share | Turn off location in the share options | That outgoing copy omits the location; do not assume the original library file was rewritten |
| Prevent future camera tags | The camera’s location permission or geotag setting | Disable the camera’s location option or deny location access | New captures stop receiving camera location tags; old files are not retroactively cleaned |
| Control a photo-service location | An estimated or manually entered place stored by the service | Edit or remove the service location, or adjust that service’s sharing controls | The service’s display and sharing behavior changes; a camera-written location in a downloaded original can remain |
The choice also has a practical trade-off. Photos without location may no longer appear in map views, location searches or trip memories, depending on the service. Keep location on your private originals if those organizational features matter, and create a cleaned copy for a wider audience.

iPhone or iPad: remove a location from an existing photo
Apple Photos provides a direct control for changing a selected item in the library. This is the appropriate route when you want the photo itself in that library to stop carrying a location.
- Open Photos and select the picture.
- Tap More (the button with additional actions).
- Choose Adjust Info.
- Tap Adjust Location.
- Select No Location.
Apple describes the result plainly: “You can remove location information from any photo or video by tapping More on the photo or video, then tapping Adjust Location > No Location.” This wording comes from Apple’s Photos & Privacy guidance. The command addresses the selected library item; it is not a setting for every photo you will take in the future.
Check what the library knows
Open the photo’s information view after making the change and confirm that no place is shown. If you have several versions of the same picture, inspect each one. A duplicate imported from another app, a downloaded original or an edited export is a separate file and may have its own metadata.

- It does not automatically remove location from older copies stored elsewhere.
- It does not stop the camera from adding a location to your next picture.
- It does not conceal a location that can be inferred from the image itself.
iPhone or iPad: share without location while keeping the library item
If you only need a privacy-safe outgoing copy, use the share control rather than modifying your library. This is useful when you still want your private collection to retain map organization.
- Select one or more pictures in Photos.
- Tap the Share button to open the Share Sheet.
- Tap Options at the top of the sheet.
- Turn Location off.
- Return to the Share Sheet and choose the destination.
Apple says Location Not Included appears above Options before you share. Treat that label as confirmation for the outgoing share, not as proof that the original library record has been rewritten. The setting applies to that sharing action; check it again for a later share because a new share can have its own options.
“You can share photos with others without sharing the location where the photos were taken.”

When to use both controls
Use No Location if the library copy itself should be cleaned. Use Location off in the Share Sheet when only a particular recipient or destination needs a sanitized copy. If you want both a clean library and a safe share, remove the library location first, then confirm the share options before sending.
iPhone or iPad: stop future camera geotagging
Future captures are controlled by Location Services, not by the location-removal command for an old photo. Apple documents this path:
- Open Settings.
- Tap Privacy & Security.
- Tap Location Services.
- Choose Camera.
- Set access to Never.
This prevents the camera from collecting location for new pictures. It does not remove tags already embedded in images you took earlier, and it does not erase locations that a photo service added independently.
Privacy versus convenience
With camera access disabled, new photos may lose automatic place-based organization. If you depend on maps or trip groupings, you can leave the setting enabled for private photography and use the per-share exclusion when sending selected images. Review the setting whenever you install a different camera app: each app can have its own location permission.
Mac Photos: hide a location in the Photos library
On a Mac, the Photos command is labeled differently from the iPhone and iPad control. It hides the location associated with selected pictures in the Photos library.
- Open Photos and select one or more pictures.
- From the menu bar, choose Image > Location > Hide Location.
- Open the picture’s information panel to check the displayed location.
Photos also provides the Places album for reviewing where images are grouped. Use that view and the information panel to find pictures that still show a place. The documented steps apply to Apple Photos on Mac; they are not a general procedure for every file manager or image editor.

Library record versus an exported file
A library display and a file on disk are not always the same object. If you export, download or copy a picture, inspect the resulting file and apply the privacy-safe share option at the moment you send it. Do not infer from a hidden place in the library that every pre-existing export has also been sanitized.
Android: stop the camera from adding location to new photos
Android camera controls differ by manufacturer and software version. Open the camera app, enter its settings and look for a location, geotag or save-location switch. Google documents these common labels:
| Device family | Location setting name documented by Google |
|---|---|
| Google devices | Save location |
| Samsung devices | Location tags |
| Motorola devices | Save location |
| Xiaomi devices | Save location info |
| Other manufacturers | Names such as Geo-tag photos, Store location data or Tag locations |
- Open the phone’s Camera app.
- Tap its Settings or gear icon.
- Find the location-related toggle using the labels above as clues.
- Turn the toggle off, then take a test picture and inspect its information before relying on the setting.
The exact menu path can move after a camera or system update. If you cannot find the switch, search the camera settings for “location,” “geo,” or “tag,” rather than assuming every Android phone uses the same wording.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Use Android’s app permission as a broader block
You can also deny location to an app through Settings > App info > Permissions > Location. That is an app-permission control. It can stop the camera app from receiving location going forward, but it is not a command for removing metadata already stored in a file. Existing pictures need a separate cleanup or share decision.
Google Photos: identify which kind of location you are seeing
A place shown in Google Photos is not necessarily a GPS tag written by the camera. Google says a photo can have a location because:
- the camera saved it when the picture was taken;
- you manually added a location; or
- Google Photos estimated a place from landmarks and other photos.
That distinction determines what the service can change. Google Photos lets you edit or remove estimated locations and locations you added manually. Its Android help says a camera-added location cannot be updated or removed there.

Remove an estimated or manually added place
Open the picture in Google Photos, open its information or location controls, and use the edit or remove command for a location that the service estimated or that you entered. The labels can vary with the app version and device. If the location came directly from the camera, do not expect the service’s location editor to erase it from the underlying original; use the camera’s source-file controls or a share method that omits location instead.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsControl location shown in Google Photos sharing
Google says locations are private by default in new albums, links, conversations and other sharing contexts, with partner sharing as an exception. For a shared album, open the album’s Share controls, choose Options, and adjust the location-details setting there. This changes what people can see within that Google Photos sharing context.
That service setting should not be treated as a universal metadata scrubber. A recipient who downloads a picture and uploads it somewhere else is no longer inside the same Google Photos sharing context.
Why a downloaded Google Photos copy can still expose the camera location
Google states that downloading and sharing outside Google Photos does not apply edits made in Google Photos to the original location saved by the device. In practical terms, hiding or changing a place shown by the service may affect the service’s presentation while a downloaded original still carries the camera-written location.
- Decide whether the recipient will view the image only inside Google Photos or receive a file.
- For a Google Photos-only album or conversation, review that item’s sharing options and the album’s location setting.
- For a downloaded file, treat it as an independent original and remove or exclude location before the download is sent elsewhere.
- After downloading, inspect the copy’s information in an available photo or file-metadata viewer before uploading it to another service.
This distinction prevents a common mistake: seeing no location in a web or app view and assuming the bytes of the downloaded file have been rewritten.
Check the picture itself, not only its metadata
Metadata is only one way a photograph can reveal a place. Google warns that viewers may infer location from landmarks. Before sharing, scan the visible content for:
Best Value
- street and business signs;
- house numbers, apartment names or mail labels;
- distinctive buildings, monuments and transit signs;
- mountain skylines, beaches or unusual landscapes;
- reflections in windows, mirrors, vehicles or screens;
- paperwork, delivery labels or event banners;
- unique views that someone who knows you could recognize.
If the scene itself identifies a home, workplace or routine, metadata removal alone does not solve the privacy problem. Crop, blur or choose a different frame when the visible evidence matters more than the hidden fields.
A practical workflow for a safe outgoing copy
Use this sequence when the recipient, platform or file path is uncertain.
- Identify the source. Determine whether the image is in Apple Photos, Android storage, Google Photos or another library, and whether its place came from the camera or a service.
- Choose the scope. Decide between cleaning the library item, excluding location from one share, or preventing future captures.
- Apply the platform control. Use Adjust Location > No Location on iPhone or iPad, Image > Location > Hide Location on Mac, the camera’s location toggle on Android, or the relevant Google Photos sharing/edit control.
- Separate service sharing from file sharing. A private location setting inside a photo service does not guarantee a sanitized downloaded file.
- Inspect the result. Check the information panel or metadata viewer for a place, and verify the share sheet says location is not included where that option exists.
- Inspect the scene. Remove or avoid visual clues that identify the location.
- Send the intended copy. Do not attach an older export or duplicate when you meant to send the cleaned version.
Examples
- Sending one iPhone picture to a group: leave your library organization unchanged, select the picture, turn off Location under Share Sheet Options, and check for Location Not Included.
- Cleaning an iPad library before handing it to someone else: use More > Adjust Info > Adjust Location > No Location on the affected items, then review duplicates.
- Posting an Android camera image downloaded from a cloud library: disable future camera geotagging for later captures, but treat the downloaded image as potentially carrying its original camera location and inspect it before posting.
- Sharing a Google Photos album with relatives: review the album’s Share > Options location setting, and remember that a downloaded copy can have different metadata behavior.
Common failure modes and fixes
“I turned off location, but an old photo still shows a place.”
Turning off the camera setting is prospective. It does not clean earlier files. Use the existing-photo control in the library where the image is stored, or use a share option that excludes location for the copy you are sending.

“The place disappeared in Google Photos, but the downloaded file still reveals it.”
The service view and the camera-written original are separate layers. Google documents that service edits are not applied to the original location saved by the device when the item is downloaded and shared outside Google Photos. Sanitize the file you actually plan to upload.
“The recipient can still tell where the picture was taken.”
Look for visible landmarks, signs, addresses and reflections. Metadata controls do not change the scene. Select another image or edit the visible clue before sharing.
“I cannot find the Android setting.”
Look in the camera app’s own settings, not only the phone’s general location page. Search for Save location, Location tags, Save location info, Geo-tag photos, Store location data or Tag locations. The label depends on the manufacturer and software version.
“I removed a location and lost map organization.”
Location-free photos may no longer appear in map views, location searches or trip memories. Keep a private, organized original when appropriate and create a location-free copy for external sharing, rather than removing the place from every copy by default.

- Is the goal an edited library item, one location-free share, or future prevention?
- Did you use the control for the correct device and app?
- Could an older duplicate or downloaded original be the file you are actually sending?
- Does the outgoing share explicitly indicate that location is excluded?
- Does the photo-service setting apply only inside that service?
- Have you checked signs, landmarks, addresses and reflections in the image?
- Are you willing to give up map searches or trip memories for the cleaned copy?
Apple’s documented controls cover removing a location from an existing iPhone or iPad item, hiding it in Mac Photos and excluding it from a particular share. Android’s camera and permission controls prevent future collection, while Google Photos requires you to distinguish camera-written metadata from locations it estimated or that you entered. Matching the control to the copy and destination is what prevents an apparent fix from leaving the original location exposed.
