The edit applies to the existing video, so you do not need to upload it again. For a local audio master, use Audacity’s Trim Audio command to keep the section you want. Use a silence-detection effect only for gaps inside the episode, and review its cuts carefully.
Choose the right method
- Episode already published; silence only at the start or end: use YouTube Studio’s trim tool to preserve the existing upload.
- Local audio file; silence only at the start or end: select the part to keep in Audacity and trim outside the selection.
- Quiet gaps throughout the episode: use Audacity’s Truncate Silence effect or an optional silence-detection editor, then listen for clipped speech and unnatural pacing.
Endpoint trimming and removing pauses throughout a recording are different edits. YouTube Studio’s trim tool is for changing the beginning or end of a published video; it is not a tool for automatically finding and shortening every quiet passage.

Trim the beginning or end of a published YouTube episode
- On a computer, sign in to YouTube Studio and open Content.
- Click the episode’s title or thumbnail, then open Editor.
- Choose Trim & cut. In the endpoint trim tool, drag the sides of the blue selection box until it covers the episode content you want to keep. The material outside the selection is removed.
- Preview the opening and ending to make sure you have not cut into speech or music, then save.
YouTube says trimming works for videos shorter than six hours and does not require a new upload; the URL, views, and comments remain. Its help page also notes that a save restriction may apply to unedited videos with more than 100,000 views outside the YouTube Partner Program. Check the current eligibility details in YouTube’s trim instructions before making a high-view edit.

Trim a local audio master in Audacity
- Open the audio file in Audacity. Save a project copy before changing a master.
- Select the section to retain: start just after the unwanted opening and stop just before the unwanted tail. Zoom in or enter precise selection times if you need more control.
- Choose Edit → Remove Special → Trim Audio. The shortcut is Ctrl+T on Windows or Linux and Cmd+T on macOS.
- Listen to the edit, then export with File → Export Audio in a suitable format such as MP3 or WAV.
Trim Audio retains the selected region and hides the material outside it in the project. Audacity says you can drag the edges back out before final export; the exported file contains the remaining visible audio. See Audacity’s trim instructions.
Shorten quiet gaps throughout an episode
For pauses between sections or other low-volume gaps throughout a recording, Audacity’s Effect → Special → Truncate Silence detects audio below a chosen decibel threshold for at least a chosen minimum duration. Depending on the settings, it can shorten detected silences to a fixed duration or compress them proportionally.

This is level-based, not an understanding of what a speaker means by a pause. Quiet speech or a deliberate pause can be detected if it meets the threshold and duration settings. Start conservatively, listen through the result, and adjust if words or natural pacing are lost. Audacity documents the controls and detection behavior in its Truncate Silence manual.

Optional alternative: Descript
Descript’s July 29, 2026 release notes say version 3.7 added a Remove Silence function that detects and shortens or removes silent gaps in one pass, with an adjustable threshold. Its instructions recommend reviewing detected edits and previewing the result; cuts can be restored in the project. This is an optional route for creators who prefer transcript-oriented audio or video editing, not a requirement. See the Descript 3.7 release notes and its silence-removal instructions.
Will trimming keep the same YouTube URL?
Yes, if you trim the existing video using YouTube Studio’s Editor and the video is eligible for the edit. YouTube says the URL, views, and comments remain. You cannot replace the video file in an existing upload with a newly rendered file: a new upload gets a new URL. If keeping the current URL matters, use Studio’s trim tool; if you need to replace the media with a separately rendered version, plan for a new upload. Podcast-specific note
A YouTube podcast episode is a video in a podcast playlist. YouTube says an MP3 file alone cannot be turned directly into a podcast there. If you are editing an audio master, you will need to publish it as a video to use it as a YouTube podcast episode. See YouTube’s podcast setup instructions.
