For ordinary stainless steel, wipe the surface with warm water and a small amount of mild dish soap using a soft, nonabrasive cloth or sponge. Move with the visible grain, rinse away residue when the appliance instructions call for it, and dry completely with a clean microfiber cloth. That removes most fingerprints and fresh grease without scratching the finish.
Before cleaning, identify the finish. Traditional stainless steel, fingerprint-resistant stainless, black stainless, and other coated surfaces can have different restrictions. The appliance manual takes priority over any general method.

Identify the finish before you clean
“Stainless steel” describes the material, not always the surface treatment. A clear coating, colored layer, or fingerprint-resistant treatment can change which cleaners and cloths are safe. Look for the model’s care label, owner’s manual, or support page before applying anything stronger than water.

| Traditional stainless steel | Usually shows a directional brushed grain and has no special coating instructions. | Warm soapy water, a nonabrasive cloth or sponge, wiping with the grain, then thorough drying. |
| Fingerprint-resistant stainless steel | Often identified by the appliance maker as fingerprint-resistant or by a warning about a clear coat. | Follow the maker’s specific procedure; avoid products and materials that can scratch or dull the coating. |
| Black stainless or colored stainless | The colored appearance generally indicates a surface treatment rather than bare metal. | Use only the cleaning method approved for that model. Do not assume a traditional stainless polish is compatible. |
| Stainless-look plastic, trim, gaskets, or displays | Edges and controls may be different materials from the main door or panel. | Keep cleaner on the cloth rather than spraying near seams, controls, displays, or rubber parts. |
Maytag’s general stainless-steel care guidance is available at its stainless-steel cleaning page. Whirlpool publishes separate instructions for fingerprint-resistant stainless steel. Those pages illustrate why the finish and appliance model matter.

The basic method for fingerprints and fresh grease
Use this sequence for traditional stainless steel unless your manual specifies another process. Work on a cool surface, and test an inconspicuous area if you are unsure how the finish will react.
- Remove loose debris. Brush away crumbs or grit with a dry, soft cloth. Rubbing grit across the panel can create fine scratches.
- Prepare the cleaning solution. Add a small amount of mild dish soap to warm water. More soap is not better; excess detergent leaves a film that looks like new smudging.
- Dampen a soft cloth or nonabrasive sponge. Wring it so it is wet but not dripping. A microfiber cloth is a practical choice because it can lift oily residue without requiring an abrasive pad.
- Find the grain. Look for the fine lines running horizontally, vertically, or in another consistent direction. Wipe parallel to those lines rather than in circles or across them.
- Clean in overlapping passes. Start at the top and work downward, using light pressure. Give handles and frequently touched edges extra passes, but do not scrub aggressively.
- Rinse when required. If the soap leaves a film, wipe with a second cloth dampened with clean water. Some appliance makers specify a clear-water rinse after washing; follow that instruction for your model.
- Dry immediately and completely. Use a clean, dry microfiber or soft cloth, again moving with the grain. Do not leave droplets to evaporate on the panel.
Maytag recommends warm soapy water, a nonabrasive sponge, even strokes with the grain, and a clean soft cloth for drying. Its guidance is at Maytag’s stainless-steel care page. Thorough drying is important because residual water can leave marks or discoloration as it dries.
How to remove a greasy film that remains
Repeat the mild-soap process first
Heavy fingerprints often contain skin oil, cooking oil, or lotion. A single pass may spread that oil into a thin haze. Use a fresh section of the cloth, apply the warm soapy solution again, and make several gentle passes with the grain. Rinse the cloth frequently so you do not redistribute grease.

Use a dedicated stainless-steel cleaner only when needed
For traditional stainless steel that still has residue after routine cleaning, a product specifically labeled for stainless steel is an optional next step. Read both the cleaner label and the appliance manual. Apply the amount directed, keep it away from plastic trim and gaskets, and buff with a clean dry microfiber cloth if the instructions call for buffing.

Frigidaire describes its ReadyClean product as formulated for fingerprints, smudges, grease, dirt, and oil, with buffing using a dry microfiber cloth. That is the manufacturer’s stated purpose, not independent comparative testing; compatibility with your appliance’s finish still needs to be confirmed. The product listing is at Frigidaire’s ReadyClean page.
Consider a cloth-only option
A stainless-steel microfiber cloth can be useful when you want to avoid liquid cleaner. 3M says its Scotch-Brite cloth is intended for stainless-steel kitchen appliances and surfaces, removes fingerprints and smudges without chemicals or water, and is reusable and machine washable. Those are 3M’s product claims rather than results from an independent comparison. See the specification at 3M’s product page.
Do not assume vinegar is universally safe
Haier provides a diluted-vinegar method for greasy fingerprints on the stainless refrigerator and dishwasher surfaces covered by its support guidance. Its instructions include rinsing with clear hot water and drying quickly along the grain; read the full procedure at Haier’s support page.

That method is not a universal stainless-steel rule. Maytag’s care guidance specifically lists vinegar-based cleaners among products to avoid for the finishes it covers. If your own manual prohibits vinegar, do not use it, even if another manufacturer permits it.

Wipe with the grain, not against it
The grain is the pattern of fine directional lines created during finishing. Hold the panel at an angle under bright light and look for the direction in which those lines run. On a large door, the grain may be horizontal; on a handle or trim piece, it can run in another direction.
- Keep each stroke parallel to the lines.
- Use long, overlapping passes instead of circular scrubbing.
- Follow the grain around corners rather than dragging a cloth diagonally across the panel.
- Use a separate clean area of the cloth for drying so oily moisture is not left behind.
Wiping with the grain does not repair scratches, but it reduces the chance that cleaning marks will stand out against the existing brushed pattern.
Materials to have ready
| Item | Use | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Warm water | Dilutes and carries away ordinary dust and fingerprints. | Water spots can remain if the surface is not dried. |
| Mild dish soap | Helps loosen fresh grease on traditional stainless steel. | Too much leaves a film; rinse when the manual calls for it. |
| Soft microfiber or other nonabrasive cloth | Cleaning, rinsing, and final drying. | Wash it free of grit and fabric softener residue before reuse. |
| Nonabrasive sponge | Useful for a greasy area that needs more moisture than a cloth provides. | Do not use a scouring side or soap-filled abrasive pad. |
| Stainless-steel cleaner | Optional treatment for persistent residue on a compatible traditional finish. | Follow the label and keep it off coatings, plastic, rubber, and displays unless approved. |
Materials and cleaners to avoid
The exact prohibition list depends on the appliance maker and finish. The following warnings come from manufacturer guidance and should be treated as finish-specific rather than as a single universal rule.

| Steel wool and abrasive pads | Can scratch bare stainless steel or dull a clear coat. | Maytag and Whirlpool both warn against steel wool; Whirlpool also warns against soap-filled scouring pads. |
| Abrasive powders and gritty cloths | Hard particles can leave visible lines or a dull area. | Maytag warns against abrasive powders; Whirlpool warns against gritty washcloths. |
| Paper towels and newsprint | May leave lint or, when rubbed with grit, create fine scratches. | Maytag lists paper towels and newsprint among materials to avoid; Whirlpool also warns against paper towels for its fingerprint-resistant finish. |
| Bleach and chlorine products | Can damage some finishes and coatings. | Whirlpool specifically warns against chlorine bleach products for its fingerprint-resistant stainless guidance. |
| Ammonia, citrus-based, vinegar-based, or oven cleaners | May react with or damage a finish that is not designed for them. | Maytag lists ammonia, citrus-based cleaners, vinegar-based cleaners, and oven cleaners among products to avoid for the finishes covered by its care instructions. |
| Unapproved harsh or abrasive cleaners | Can scratch, dull, or strip a coating. | Both manufacturers direct users to the appliance’s own instructions. |
Whirlpool’s fingerprint-resistant guidance is at Whirlpool’s support page. Its warnings are not permission to use products that another appliance maker forbids, and vice versa.

Routine cleaning versus stubborn residue
| Situation | Recommended first choice | Next step if the mark remains |
|---|---|---|
| A few fresh fingerprints | Soft cloth dampened with warm water; wipe with the grain and dry. | Add a small amount of mild dish soap if oil remains. |
| Several greasy handprints | Warm water with a little mild dish soap and a nonabrasive cloth or sponge. | Rinse the cloth, repeat gently, and dry with a clean microfiber cloth. |
| Thin haze after cleaning | Use a clean water-dampened cloth to remove soap residue. | Dry and buff lightly with a separate dry microfiber cloth. |
| Persistent grease on traditional stainless steel | Use a stainless-steel cleaner approved by the manual. | Follow the product label; stop if the finish changes or the cleaner is not approved. |
| Residue on fingerprint-resistant or colored stainless | Use only the manufacturer’s specified method. | Contact the maker if the approved method does not remove it instead of escalating to an unapproved solvent. |
Fix common cleaning problems
Streaks appear after the panel dries
Streaks are often leftover soap or uneven drying. Wipe with a clean cloth dampened according to the appliance instructions, then dry immediately with a clean microfiber cloth in the grain direction. Change to a dry section of cloth as soon as it becomes damp.
The surface looks cloudy or dull
Stop using the current product. A cloudy appearance can come from cleaner residue, an incompatible polish, or damage to a coating. Remove only what the manual permits—usually a gentle water wipe for a traditional finish—and do not try to restore gloss with abrasive rubbing.
Scratches or a dull strip appeared
Do not try to blend the area with steel wool, abrasive powder, or a scouring pad. Those materials can enlarge the damaged area. Check the warranty and manufacturer care instructions, especially if the panel is coated or fingerprint-resistant.

A cleaner leaves an oily polish
Some stainless products are designed to leave a polished or protective film. If you do not want that finish, discontinue the product and return to the appliance maker’s routine-cleaning method. Do not layer different cleaners; one product’s residue can interfere with another.
How to choose between cleaning approaches
There is no evidence here that one brand or product removes smudges better than every alternative. Choose by compatibility and by the type of residue.
| Approach | Best fit | Questions to answer first |
|---|---|---|
| Water and microfiber cloth | Light fingerprints and dust on a finish that permits damp wiping. | Does the cloth contain grit? Can the surface be safely wiped with water? |
| Mild soap and water | Routine fingerprints and fresh grease on traditional stainless steel. | Does the manual require a rinse? Can the cloth be rinsed clean? |
| Dedicated stainless-steel cleaner | Persistent residue on a compatible traditional finish. | Is it approved for this finish, and does it require rinsing or buffing? |
| Manufacturer-specific diluted vinegar method | Only the Haier appliances and surfaces covered by Haier’s instructions. | Does your appliance maker explicitly allow vinegar, and does its method specify dilution, rinsing, and drying? |
A safe cleaning checklist
- Locate the appliance model’s care instructions.
- Confirm whether the panel is traditional, fingerprint-resistant, black, or otherwise coated.
- Remove loose grit before wet wiping.
- Use a soft, clean, nonabrasive cloth or sponge.
- Use warm water and only a little mild dish soap unless the manual says otherwise.
- Move in the visible grain direction.
- Rinse away soap residue when directed or when a film remains.
- Dry every section completely with a clean microfiber or soft cloth.
- Reserve specialty cleaner for residue that routine cleaning cannot remove, and verify compatibility first.
- Never escalate to steel wool, abrasive powders, bleach, or a harsh solvent simply because a mark is persistent.
When to contact the appliance maker
Ask the manufacturer for guidance when the finish is coated, colored, or labeled fingerprint-resistant and the manual is missing; when a cleaner has changed the color or sheen; when scratches appeared; or when grease remains after the approved cleaning process. Provide the model number and describe exactly what product and cloth were used. That information lets the maker distinguish residue from finish damage and avoids another incompatible treatment.
