To remove Carbon from a Rust server, stop the server first, back up your plugin configuration and saved data, remove Carbon with your host’s supported method, then validate or update the server files before starting it again. If you are returning to unmodded Rust, select the host’s vanilla option and run Steam-file validation. If you are moving to Oxide/uMod, remove Carbon completely before installing Oxide; the two frameworks should not run together.

Carbon is a server-side Rust modding framework. Removing its framework files is different from removing individual plugins, and deleting a plugin’s .cs source file does not necessarily delete that plugin’s configuration or saved data.

Choose the outcome before you delete anything

“Remove Carbon” can mean three different jobs. Decide which one you need before changing files, because the safest backup and cleanup choices differ.

Goal What changes What to preserve
Remove Carbon and run vanilla Rust Carbon and its modded files are removed; Steam validation restores original game files where necessary. Keep plugin data only if you may reinstall a framework later. A vanilla server will not load Carbon plugins.
Replace Carbon with Oxide/uMod Carbon is removed first, then Oxide is installed through the host’s supported workflow. Back up plugin configuration and saved data. Compatibility and file locations vary by plugin and framework.
Keep the framework but remove selected plugins Only the chosen plugin is unloaded and its source file removed. Decide separately whether to retain that plugin’s configuration and data.
Perform a clean reset Framework files, plugins, configuration and saved data are discarded. Nothing is needed after you confirm the reset is intentional, but retain an external backup until the server is verified.

Do not treat a framework removal as a wipe of your Rust world. Server maps, blueprints and other game saves are separate from Carbon’s plugin state, but an imprecise file deletion can still damage an installation. When in doubt, stop and take a complete backup first.

Back up Carbon and plugin state first

Make the backup while the server is stopped. Copy the Carbon/Oxide plugin configuration and saved-data directories to an external hard drive, SSD or another storage location that is not the server’s live disk. Keep the original directory structure and record the date of the copy.

Removing a plugin source file does not necessarily remove its configuration or saved data, as MeltingLabs explains in its plugin guide: Keep in mind that removing the .cs file does not necessarily delete the plugin’s configuration or saved data. That distinction matters if you later reinstall the plugin, move to Oxide, or need to restore settings after an accidental deletion. See MeltingLabs’ Oxide and Carbon plugin guide.

Solace Servers recommends moving oxide/plugins/ and oxide/config/ to a backup location before major changes. A Carbon installation may use a Carbon-specific directory instead, so copy the equivalent plugin, configuration and data folders shown by your host rather than assuming one universal path. The Solace reference is Solace Servers’ Rust Oxide guide.

  • Stop the Rust server and confirm its status is offline.
  • Copy plugin source files, configuration files and saved data.
  • Include any host-specific Carbon directories and your server’s normal world/save backups.
  • Store the copy away from the server and verify that representative files open or can be restored.
  • Write down the current Carbon version, Rust build and enabled plugins so you can diagnose a change later.

Do not delete the backup after the first successful boot. Keep it until players can connect, the console is clean and any replacement framework has loaded the plugins you intend to keep.

Managed hosting: use the provider’s removal workflow

A managed Rust host may provide a script that knows which Carbon files belong to its current server image. This is safer than guessing at filenames, because Carbon releases and panel layouts change.

Host Havoc panel procedure

Host Havoc’s guide, published June 9, 2026, gives this sequence for its control panel:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Log in to the game control panel.
  2. Stop the Rust server. Host Havoc’s operational instruction is simply: Stop the server.
  3. Run Remove Carbon Files.
  4. Use Update Server Files to re-validate or update the installation.
  5. Start the server and watch the console for a normal startup.

The provider’s instructions are at Host Havoc’s Remove Carbon from Your Rust Server guide. Menu labels and the order of validation can differ on another host, so do not assume that this exact script exists elsewhere.

What to check after a panel removal

  • Confirm that the panel reports the removal and file update as completed rather than merely queued.
  • Check the server console for Carbon loader messages, missing assemblies or plugin errors.
  • Connect with a test administrator account before announcing the change to players.
  • Verify that the world and player saves are present. Framework removal should not be confused with a wipe.
  • Retain the backup until the replacement or vanilla boot has been tested.

When there is no “Remove Carbon” button

If your panel has no dedicated script, use its File Manager or SFTP access. The exact filenames and directories depend on the host, Carbon release and current Rust server build; there is no safe, universal deletion list to paste into every server.

Manual removal workflow

  1. Stop the server from the control panel and wait until the process is fully offline.
  2. Open the host’s File Manager or connect with SFTP using an account with permission to modify the server directory.
  3. Locate the Carbon framework files using your host’s documentation. If the host provides a cleanup script or package, prefer it over manual selection.
  4. Move Carbon framework files to a dated backup directory outside the active server path instead of permanently deleting them on the first pass.
  5. Keep plugin configuration and saved-data folders that you may migrate. Do not remove them merely because the framework is going away.
  6. Save the changes, run the host’s file validation or update operation if available, and start the server.
  7. Review the startup log and test a player connection. If the server fails, stop it and restore the moved files from the backup.

Do not remove Rust’s core executable, server identity files, world saves or configuration unless your host explicitly identifies them as part of Carbon. If a path is unclear, ask the host to identify the framework files before deleting it.

Returning to vanilla Rust

Vanilla means the Rust server runs without Carbon, Oxide or another server-side modding framework. GameServerKings instructs administrators to set the modding framework to vanilla, restart with Steam-file validation enabled and let validation restore original game files that a framework replaced. Its procedure is documented at GameServerKings’ Rust framework guide.

Vanilla checklist

  1. Back up Carbon and plugin state.
  2. Stop the server.
  3. Set the host’s framework or mod-loader selector to vanilla, if that option exists.
  4. Run Steam-file validation or the host’s equivalent update/repair action.
  5. Start the server and confirm the console no longer attempts to load Carbon.
  6. Test administrative commands, joining, world saves and scheduled tasks that were previously supplied by plugins.

Validation repairs the installation’s original game files; it does not convert Carbon plugins into vanilla features. Any gameplay, permissions, kits, teleportation or administration features supplied by plugins will be unavailable unless Rust itself provides them.

What happens to plugin data on vanilla

Leaving plugin folders in a backup location is usually the least destructive choice. Vanilla Rust will not use Carbon plugin configuration or saved data, but retaining a copy lets you return to a modded framework later. A clean reset is appropriate only when you deliberately want to discard that state and have confirmed the backup is no longer needed.

Switching from Carbon to Oxide/uMod

Carbon and Oxide/uMod are alternative server frameworks. Solace Servers and GameServerKings both warn against running both frameworks together. Remove Carbon first, validate or update the server files, and only then install or select Oxide through the method your host supports.

Safe migration order

  1. Record the Carbon version, Rust build and list of enabled plugins.
  2. Stop the server and back up plugin source, configuration and saved data.
  3. Remove Carbon with the managed-panel script or the host-approved manual method.
  4. Run file validation or an update so the base Rust installation is consistent.
  5. Install or select Oxide/uMod through the host’s supported control-panel option or documented package.
  6. Start the server without enabling every plugin at once. Confirm the framework loads first.
  7. Add plugins one at a time, checking the console after each addition.
  8. Restore configuration or data only when the plugin’s Oxide version supports the same format.

A Carbon plugin is not automatically an Oxide plugin. Even when both frameworks use .cs source files, APIs, hooks, permissions and data formats can differ. Check each plugin author’s compatibility notes before copying files into an Oxide directory.

Why running both causes trouble

Two frameworks can attempt to patch or load the same Rust server process, creating duplicate hooks, conflicting assemblies, unpredictable plugin behavior or a failed startup. If a panel offers independent toggles for Carbon and Oxide, leave Carbon disabled and verify that only the selected framework’s files are active.

Removing one plugin without removing Carbon

If your aim is only to uninstall a plugin, do not remove the Carbon framework. Use the framework’s unload command when your Carbon version supports one, then remove that plugin’s .cs file from the Carbon plugin directory. PineRiver documents carbon/plugins as Carbon’s plugin location and notes that its panel’s Remove action also deletes a plugin configuration file. The path and warning are described at PineRiver’s Rust plugin guide.

Choose what happens to the plugin’s data

  • Keep configuration and data: move or copy them to a backup location if you may reinstall the plugin.
  • Reset configuration: remove the configuration only after recording settings you want to reproduce.
  • Erase all state: delete saved data only when you understand that player progress, counters or stored plugin records may be unrecoverable.

Because a panel Remove action may delete configuration along with the source file, read its confirmation dialog carefully. If the panel does not identify which data it removes, make your own backup first.

Managed panel or manual SFTP?

Option Best for Advantages Risks and limits
Managed-panel removal script Hosts that expose a current Carbon removal action Provider-defined file selection; usually followed by an integrated validation/update step Menu names and behavior are host-specific; a script may remove files you intended to retain, so back up first
File Manager Administrators who need visual control without an SFTP client Easy to move files into a dated backup directory and inspect paths Manual selection errors; permissions and hidden files vary by panel
SFTP Advanced administrators or hosts without a useful file manager Precise transfers, local backups and repeatable workflows Requires correct credentials and careful path selection; deleting the wrong directory can damage the server

Use the panel script when it is documented for your host and current build. Use File Manager or SFTP when no supported script exists, but move files aside first so recovery is possible.

Preserve plugin state or perform a clean reset?

Choice Retain Use when
Preserve state Plugin source, configuration and saved data You may migrate to Oxide, reinstall Carbon or need a rollback
Selective cleanup Only the plugins and data you still need You are removing obsolete plugins while keeping the framework
Clean reset Nothing from the modding layer after an independently verified backup You want a genuinely fresh modded installation or are abandoning plugin features

Framework removal and data cleanup are separate decisions. Making them separately gives you a working rollback path and prevents an accidental loss of plugin settings.

Troubleshooting after Carbon removal

The server still shows Carbon messages

Stop the server and inspect the active installation path for remaining Carbon files. Confirm that the panel’s framework selector is not still set to Carbon, then run the host’s validation/update operation. If you used manual SFTP, restore the backup and ask the host which files its Carbon package owns rather than deleting random assemblies.

The server will not start after removal

Read the first error in the startup log, not only the final shutdown line. Stop the process, restore the files you moved, and boot again to establish whether the failure came from the deletion or an unrelated Rust update. Then repeat the removal using the host’s supported script or request provider assistance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Plugins disappeared after switching frameworks

Check whether the plugins are compatible with the new framework and whether you placed them in the correct plugin directory. A Carbon plugin may need an Oxide-specific release. Restore configuration only after the plugin itself loads successfully, because incompatible data can create misleading errors.

Configuration or player data is missing

Look in the dated backup, not only the live directory. A panel removal action can delete a plugin configuration file, and deleting a .cs file alone does not tell you whether data remains. Restore one plugin’s files at a time and test between restorations.

The world appears wiped

Do not immediately generate a new world. Stop the server and verify the save path, identity settings and host startup parameters. Framework removal should not require deleting world saves; restore the correct save from your backup if the panel or update operation changed the active path.

Verification checklist before reopening the server

  • The server starts without Carbon loader errors or duplicate framework messages.
  • Only the intended framework is enabled: vanilla, Carbon or Oxide/uMod.
  • Rust file validation or the host’s update step completed successfully.
  • The expected world, player saves and server identity are present.
  • Plugins intended for the selected framework load without errors.
  • Permissions, administrator access and essential server settings work.
  • A test player can join, play briefly and reconnect.
  • The external backup remains available until the change is accepted.

The safest sequence is therefore: stop, back up, remove with the host-supported method, validate, start, and verify. Keep framework migration and plugin-data deletion as separate decisions so a failed boot can be reversed.
