To remove stains from cloth napkins, first check the care label, lift off solids without rubbing, and treat wax differently from food. For tomato sauce, flush the washable fabric from the back with cold water; for grease, blot and pretreat. Wax is more complicated: cleaning authorities disagree about using an iron, so do not apply heat unless the napkin’s care instructions and a hidden-area test support it. After washing, inspect the napkin and air-dry it if any mark remains.
Before treating a cloth napkin
- Check the care label. Confirm that the napkin is washable and note its fiber, permitted water temperature, and any restrictions on bleach or heat. If it is non-washable, valuable, or has an unknown finish, consult a professional cleaner rather than experimenting with solvents or heat.
- Lift off excess material gently. Use a spoon or dull knife to remove food or surface wax. Avoid aggressive rubbing, which can work a stain further into the cloth.
- Test where damage will be less visible. Before applying a stain treatment, bleach, solvent, or heat, test it on a seam or another inconspicuous area if the color or finish could be affected.

How to remove candle wax from cloth napkins
Wax needs to be lifted or transferred before treating any residue. The American Cleaning Institute (ACI) recommends scraping away surface wax, transferring remaining wax with a warm iron and paper towels, then treating the residue with prewash stain remover. Utah State University Extension warns that ironing can drive wax deeper into fabric. Because the sources directly disagree, treat ironing as an option only when the care label permits heat and a hidden-area test shows no damage.

If you use the ACI approach, keep the iron warm rather than assuming a high setting is appropriate, and use clean paper towels as wax transfers. Follow the stain remover’s directions and the napkin’s care label.

How to get food stains out of cloth napkins
Choose the first treatment by stain type rather than treating every meal stain alike. A laundry prewash stain remover is one option ACI recommends for both wax residue and food stains; follow its label and the napkin’s instructions.
Tomato sauce and other tomato-based stains
- Remove excess sauce gently.
- If the napkin is washable, promptly flush cold water through the back of the stained area.
- Work liquid detergent gently into the mark. If considering hydrogen peroxide or white vinegar, ACI limits this suggestion to white fabric or fabric confirmed colorfast; it also mentions lemon juice for white fabrics. Test first, then rinse well.
- Apply a prewash stain remover, leave it for at least five minutes, and launder according to the care label. ACI’s tomato sauce guidance
If the mark remains after laundering, ACI suggests applying detergent, soaking for 30 minutes in warm water, and treating again with stain remover. Only use warm water if the napkin’s care instructions allow it.

Grease, butter, and oily food
For meal grease, blot rather than rub, use cold water and a little dish soap, then apply a laundry stain remover before laundering. Bleach, laundering, and checking the result
Do not assume bleach is safe because a napkin is white. For tomato stains, ACI’s guidance limits chlorine bleach to fabrics for which it is safe, and suggests oxygen bleach as a possible option for colored items when the care label permits it. Follow the product label and the napkin’s care instructions.
- Launder using a temperature and cycle allowed by the care label.
- Inspect the napkin in good light before putting it in a dryer.
- If a stain remains, repeat an appropriate treatment and air-dry between attempts rather than machine-drying the marked fabric.
