Some bushes in Stardew Valley can be removed, but only on certain farm maps and only if the particular bush is removable. Use a Copper Axe or better on eligible bushes on the Riverlands, Forest, Hill-top, and Beach Farm maps. If an upgraded axe has no effect, the bush may be permanent; a stronger tool is not a guaranteed fix.
Which farm maps allow bush removal?
The Stardew Valley Wiki’s Axes page says that “some bushes can be destroyed with a Copper Axe (or better)” on these maps:

The rule applies to some bushes, not every bush on those maps. The wiki’s page history attributes bush destruction on Riverlands and Forest Farm to version 1.11; it does not establish when the behavior for every map in the current list was added. The available information also does not establish differences between platforms.

How to check whether a bush can be removed
- Identify your farm map and check whether it is one of the four listed above.
- Equip a Copper Axe or a higher-level axe and try it on the specific bush.
- If the bush does not respond, do not assume another axe upgrade will help. The documented rule covers only some bushes, and it does not provide a complete tile-by-tile list of removable ones.
Make sure the object is actually a bush
Logs and stumps are separate terrain objects with different tool requirements. Upgrading the axe for one of those objects will not change whether a particular bush is removable.

| Object | Minimum axe | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Some bushes on Riverlands, Forest, Hill-top, and Beach Farm | Copper Axe | Only some bushes can be destroyed; the farm map alone does not guarantee removability. Stardew Valley Wiki: Axes |
| Large log, including the Secret Woods entrance log | Steel Axe | The Secret Woods entrance is blocked by a large log. Removing a large log yields 8 Hardwood and 25 Foraging Experience; it does not reappear. Stardew Valley Wiki: Secret Woods and Stardew Valley Wiki: Large Log |
| Large stump | Copper Axe | Stumps are not bushes. The Secret Woods has six large stumps that regrow daily. Stardew Valley Wiki: Secret Woods |
Why an Iridium Axe may not work
An Iridium Axe exceeds the Copper Axe threshold, but that threshold applies only to bushes that are removable in the first place. If a bush remains unchanged after repeated hits, the likely issue is that it is permanent under the documented rule—not that you need another axe upgrade. A 2023 player discussion describes this same confusion, but the current map list and tool threshold above come from the wiki.

What to do when the bush stays in place
- Confirm that you are on Riverlands, Forest, Hill-top, or Beach Farm.
- Confirm that the object is a bush rather than a log or stump.
- Test it with at least a Copper Axe.
- If it still does not respond, treat it as non-removable under the documented vanilla rule; the available map guidance does not identify every removable bush.
