Remove AnyDesk only after deciding whether the computer may be part of a security incident. If the installation or a recent connection is unexpected, record the AnyDesk ID or alias, package and service state, logged-in users, and relevant event records before deleting files. For a routine uninstall, first identify whether AnyDesk came from a Debian package, an RPM package, a portable executable, or a managed custom deployment. Then remove it using the matching method, verify that no package, process, or systemd service remains, and separately review unattended-access credentials, access-control rules, and historical evidence.

A stopped service or missing package describes the machine’s current state. It cannot prove that an earlier remote session did or did not happen.

Decide whether to preserve evidence first

Unexpected remote-access software deserves a different process from an ordinary application cleanup. If someone may have connected without permission, treat the machine as a possible incident until you have recorded enough information for an administrator or responder to assess it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What to record before changing anything

  • The date and time, visible AnyDesk ID or alias, and the version shown by the client.
  • Whether AnyDesk is open, whether a session appears active, and which local users are logged in.
  • The result of package and service checks, including the package manager’s proposed removal list if you are about to uninstall.
  • Any session or history entries visible in AnyDesk.
  • Relevant operating-system authentication, account-change, startup, and network-event records that are still available.

Save copies of relevant logs and configuration before cleanup where feasible. Package removal, configuration deletion, log rotation, and restarting the machine can all reduce what you can later examine. The official AnyDesk material explains application settings and ID/configuration retention, but it does not define a complete Linux forensic or incident-response procedure. On a work computer, follow your organization’s incident process and contact its administrator or security team before uninstalling.

When ordinary cleanup is reasonable

You can use the normal uninstall path when you installed AnyDesk knowingly, there are no signs of an unknown session, and no business or regulatory requirement calls for preserving the machine. Even then, keep the distinction between removing the package and removing saved configuration: they are separate decisions.

Identify how AnyDesk was installed

The correct removal command depends on the distribution and deployment method. AnyDesk publishes Linux packages for Debian-family and RPM-family systems, while portable executables, custom clients, and managed deployments can live outside the package database. The Linux download page listed version 8.1.0 when this article’s information was checked; the official changelog dates that release to September 23, 2026. Version availability and package behavior can change.

Check the distribution and package tools

On a systemd-based Linux desktop, begin with local information rather than assuming a command from another distribution:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
cat /etc/os-release
command -v apt dnf yum zypper rpm dpkg 2>/dev/null

The first command identifies the distribution. The second shows which package tools are present; it does not by itself prove how AnyDesk was installed. Confirm the package name before accepting a removal transaction.

Recognize the three practical branches

Removal branch Use it when What must be checked
Package-managed removal AnyDesk was installed through a DEB or RPM package route. The distribution, package manager, exact package name, dependent packages, and whether the AnyDesk service is still present.
Portable or custom deployment cleanup The program runs from an extracted archive, a custom client, or a directory managed outside the normal package database. The executable path, custom systemd unit, launch entry, configuration location, and organizational ownership.
Evidence preservation before cleanup The installation is unexpected or an unauthorized connection is plausible. What records can be retained, how critical the machine is, and whether a security team should take over.

A corporate deployment may use settings or service files that are not represented by a standard public package. Do not delete a directory merely because its name contains “anydesk” until you know whether it belongs to an approved management system.

Remove a Debian- or Ubuntu-family package

Use this route for a DEB installation on Debian, Ubuntu, Linux Mint, or another Debian-family distribution. The exact package name should be confirmed first.

Confirm the package state

dpkg -l anydesk
apt-cache policy anydesk

A result showing an installed package supports the package-managed route. If the package is absent, do not infer that AnyDesk is gone; it may be portable, installed under another name, or deployed by a management tool.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Stop the service only after preserving needed evidence

For an ordinary uninstall, stop the service before removing the package so that a running process does not keep files open:

sudo systemctl stop anydesk

If the machine may be compromised, capture the service state and relevant records first. Stopping a service changes the system and can affect live evidence.

Remove the package

sudo apt remove anydesk

Read the transaction summary before entering Y. Confirm that the proposed action removes the intended package and does not unexpectedly remove desktop components or organizational tooling. The command above is a common package-manager example, not an uninstall switch documented on AnyDesk’s Linux CLI reference.

Some administrators use a package manager’s purge operation to remove package-owned configuration. Do not choose that option automatically when access is suspicious: AnyDesk states that ID and settings are kept by default during uninstall unless configuration files are specifically selected for removal, and those files may be relevant evidence. Decide on configuration cleanup only after recording what you need.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Remove an RPM-family package

Fedora, RHEL-compatible systems, openSUSE, and other RPM-family distributions can use different front ends. Select the tool used by the target system rather than copying a command from a different release.

Check whether RPM knows about AnyDesk

rpm -q anydesk

If the query returns an installed version, the package database recognizes the package. If it reports that the package is not installed, inspect for a portable or custom deployment instead.

Use the distribution’s package manager

On a DNF-based system, a typical removal command is:

sudo dnf remove anydesk

Older systems may use:

sudo yum remove anydesk

Some openSUSE installations use:

sudo zypper remove anydesk

These are package-manager examples. Review the proposed transaction, especially dependencies and configuration-file handling, before confirming. If the package was installed by a corporate software-management system, its policy may reinstall it; coordinate with the administrator instead of repeatedly deleting the local copy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Stop a running service when appropriate

sudo systemctl stop anydesk

Use this only after evidence that should be preserved has been captured. A service stop is an operational action, not proof that no earlier connection occurred.

Handle a portable, custom, or managed installation

A portable executable can run without appearing in dpkg or rpm. A custom client can also use a different executable name, service unit, or configuration directory.

Locate the executable and process

command -v anydesk
pgrep -a anydesk
ps -ef | grep -i '[a]nydesk'

If a command returns a path, record it before moving or deleting anything. Resolve a symbolic link when necessary:

readlink -f "$(command -v anydesk)"

Do not assume that a missing result means the software never ran. A process may have already exited, the executable may be launched by a wrapper, or the deployment may use a custom name.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Inspect a custom systemd unit

systemctl status anydesk
systemctl cat anydesk

The second command can show the unit’s executable path and startup settings. If the unit exists but no package owns it, identify who created it and where its files are located. For a managed work computer, have the owner remove the deployment through the approved management system.

Remove only identified files

After recording evidence and confirming ownership, remove the executable, unit, launcher, or configuration that belongs to the custom deployment. Do not use a broad command such as a recursive search-and-delete for every file containing “anydesk”; that can destroy unrelated records and makes later investigation harder. If a unit remains, determine its owning package or deployment before deleting the unit file.

Verify that the current installation is gone

Uninstallation is not complete when the desktop icon disappears. Perform independent checks and adapt them to the target distribution.

Check the service

systemctl status anydesk
systemctl is-enabled anydesk

An “inactive” status means the service is not currently running. “Disabled” means it is not enabled for normal boot. A unit-not-found result is useful, but it does not rule out a portable executable or another custom unit. If the service is still active or enabled, identify its owner before removing it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check running processes

pgrep -a anydesk

No output indicates that no process matching that name is currently visible to this command. It does not establish what ran earlier, and a custom client may use another process name.

Check both package databases

dpkg -l anydesk
rpm -q anydesk

Only the database used by the distribution is relevant; the other command may simply report that the package is unknown. An absent package result means the package is not registered, not that every executable, service, configuration file, or historical record has disappeared.

Check launch points without deleting evidence blindly

Review the service definition, desktop autostart entries, and any organization-managed startup policy if a process returns after reboot or login. Record the path and ownership first. A leftover configuration file can be intentional retention, an unmanaged deployment, or useful evidence; its presence alone does not prove malicious activity.

Review unattended access and incoming-session controls

Removing the program does not revoke credentials that may have been shared, copied, or stored elsewhere. If AnyDesk is still available, open its Settings and Security area; labels can vary by version.

Unattended Access

Determine whether unattended access was enabled and which password, token, or other credential was used. Unattended access allows a connection without someone manually accepting the session when valid credentials are supplied. On an installed client, changing Security settings requires administrative privileges.

If a credential may have been exposed, change it from a trusted device and revoke or replace related access. Do not reuse a password from the affected computer. If the computer belongs to an employer, let the security administrator control the credential reset so that other authorized sessions are not accidentally disrupted.

Access Control List

Review the ACL for allowed IDs and aliases. Remove entries that are no longer authorized and restrict incoming access to the smallest set of identities required. An ACL is a control on who may connect; it is not a historical record of who actually connected.

Two-factor authentication and shared credentials

Where available in the deployment, review two-factor authentication and any shared credentials. Security guidance from AnyDesk describes unattended-access password changes after offboarding as a prudent measure. Apply the same principle when a contractor leaves, a password is disclosed, or the machine’s trust boundary is uncertain.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Xorg and Wayland capability

AnyDesk’s Linux support information distinguishes incoming and outgoing graphical sessions: incoming sessions require an Xorg graphical session, while Wayland is supported for outgoing connections. That distinction can explain why a particular connection type was possible or unavailable, but it does not show whether anyone attempted access.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

Investigate whether an earlier session occurred

Use several independent evidence sources. No single check establishes the complete history, and Linux log paths and retention vary by distribution, configuration, and AnyDesk version.

AnyDesk history and local records

Review session or connection history visible in AnyDesk, if it remains available. Capture timestamps, IDs, aliases, direction, and any details that identify an incoming session. Preserve the relevant configuration before selecting an option that removes it. The official material reviewed does not promise a universal Linux history location or retention period.

Operating-system authentication and account evidence

  • Review authentication records for logins, privilege escalation, new keys, and failed attempts.
  • Check local users, groups, password changes, and newly authorized accounts.
  • Look for newly enabled services, timers, desktop autostart entries, shell startup changes, or scheduled tasks.
  • Compare unusual activity with the times shown in AnyDesk history and with known maintenance windows.

Do not claim that one filename or directory applies to every Linux distribution. Systemd journal retention, traditional text logs, audit configuration, and centralized logging differ widely.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Network and file-change clues

Review unexpected outbound connections, firewall or gateway records, and changes to sensitive files where those records are available. A network connection associated with AnyDesk can indicate that the client communicated; it does not alone identify the person behind the connection or prove authorization. Correlate timestamps and account activity rather than treating one indicator as conclusive.

What a clean uninstall can and cannot tell you

  • A package query can show whether the package is currently registered.
  • A process query can show whether a matching process is running now.
  • A systemd query can show whether the named service is active or enabled now.
  • None of these checks proves that an earlier remote session did not occur.

The reviewed official sources do not guarantee that uninstalling deletes every residual record, nor that it reconstructs a full access history. Historical conclusions require the records that were retained on that particular machine or in external logging systems.

Respond when unauthorized access is plausible

  1. Contain safely. If policy permits, disconnect the affected machine from networks while preserving volatile information and keeping business continuity in mind. Do not destroy logs or reinstall before a responder advises you.
  2. Use a trusted device. Change important passwords, revoke active sessions, and replace exposed AnyDesk or related credentials from a separate device that you trust.
  3. Protect other accounts. Prioritize email, identity-provider, administrator, password-manager, VPN, and cloud accounts that were reachable from the Linux machine.
  4. Escalate appropriately. Contact your organization’s security team for a work device, a system containing sensitive data, or evidence of privilege escalation. A qualified incident-response professional may be needed to preserve and analyze the machine.
  5. Document decisions. Record what was observed, when it was observed, which commands were run, and what was changed. This prevents later investigators from confusing a cleanup action with historical evidence.

These steps are prudent incident response; they do not mean AnyDesk itself was malicious. Remote-access software can be legitimate, but an unknown credential or unapproved session changes the risk assessment.

Troubleshoot common removal problems

The package manager says AnyDesk is not installed

Check the other package database only to confirm the distribution, then inspect the executable path, process list, and systemd unit. A portable copy or custom client is the likely explanation when a process or launcher remains but the package database is empty.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The service remains after package removal

Run systemctl cat anydesk and identify the unit’s executable and owning package. Do not delete the unit blindly. A separately managed unit may be controlled by an administrator or may contain evidence that should be preserved.

AnyDesk returns after reboot

Check whether the package was reinstalled by organizational management, whether a custom unit is enabled, and whether a desktop autostart entry launches a portable executable. Record the source before disabling it. Repeated local deletion will not solve a policy-driven redeployment.

You cannot change Security settings

Installed clients require administrative privileges to change Security settings. Sign in with an authorized administrator or ask the system owner to change unattended-access credentials and ACL rules. If the account itself may be compromised, perform the reset from a trusted device.

You found no history

Missing history is not proof that no connection occurred. Retention may be limited, configuration may have been removed, or records may exist only in operating-system or centralized logs. Preserve what remains and compare timestamps across independent sources.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Version and support caveat

AnyDesk’s Linux download information listed version 8.1.0, released September 23, 2026 according to its official changelog, at the time this information was checked. Supported distributions, package names, service behavior, security controls, and interface labels can change. Confirm the current documentation and your distribution’s package metadata before using a command, and keep the package/service verification separate from any conclusion about past access.

The Bottom Line

Identify the installation method, preserve evidence if access is suspicious, remove AnyDesk with the matching Linux package or deployment method, and verify the package, process, and anydesk service state. Then review unattended-access credentials, ACL rules, and retained session and operating-system records. Uninstallation can clean up the current installation; it cannot prove what happened in the past.
