1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIf you suspect an Android banking trojan, stop entering information on that phone, disconnect it from networks when practical, and use a known-clean device to call your bank. Have the bank protect the account first; then scan and update the phone, remove the malicious app and its privileges, reset every exposed password, enable two-factor authentication, and review transactions. A factory reset or restoration of the original Android system may be necessary when the infection cannot be removed confidently.
What an Android banking trojan is
A banking trojan is malware disguised as an ordinary app or hidden inside an apparently legitimate application. Google’s Play policy defines a trojan as “code that contains a hidden, malicious component.” Unlike a simple nuisance app, a banking trojan is built to obtain valuable information or perform actions without your knowledge.

Mobile banking trojans commonly imitate a bank sign-in screen. The FBI describes malware that overlays a false login page on top of the legitimate banking app, allowing the criminal to capture a username, password, one-time code, or other details while the real app remains underneath. Government advisories also warn that malicious banking code can be concealed in apps that appear legitimate.
What the malware can try to steal
- Bank usernames, passwords, card details, and one-time authentication codes entered into a fake screen.
- Notifications containing verification codes or transaction alerts.
- Contacts, text messages, or email used for account recovery.
- Accessibility-controlled actions, such as reading the screen, pressing buttons, or approving transfers.
- Device, session, or payment-wallet information that helps an attacker impersonate you.
Warning signs that justify treating the phone as compromised
- A banking or payment app opens a login window that looks slightly different, appears at an unexpected time, or asks for information the real app never requested.
- An unfamiliar app has Accessibility, notification access, device-administrator, VPN, or “install unknown apps” permission.
- Pop-ups, redirects, fake security warnings, or messages urge you to call support or install an update.
- Unrecognized password-reset messages, new beneficiaries, payees, wallet enrollments, transfers, or card transactions appear.
- The phone becomes unusually slow, hot, data-hungry, or difficult to control soon after an app installation.
One symptom alone does not prove a trojan. However, entering banking credentials into a suspicious screen is enough reason to follow the containment procedure below.

Contain the incident before trying to clean the phone
Cleaning is not the first priority. Assume anything typed into the suspected phone could have been observed until the device and accounts are secured.
- Stop sensitive activity on the suspected phone. Do not log in to banking, shopping, email, password managers, cryptocurrency services, or other important accounts. The Federal Trade Commission advises stopping the use of usernames, passwords, and other sensitive information on a device suspected of malware.
- Disconnect the phone when practical. Turn off Wi-Fi and mobile data, or use airplane mode, while preserving information needed by the bank or a technician. Disconnecting limits further communication with the attacker, but do not destroy evidence you may need for a fraud investigation.
- Move to a known-clean device. Use a computer or phone you trust, with current updates and no sign of compromise. Do not borrow a device that is already showing suspicious behavior.
- Call the bank through a verified route. Use the telephone number printed on the physical card, a statement, or the bank’s official website typed manually. Do not use a number in a pop-up, text message, email, or suspicious app.
- Ask the bank to protect the account. Explain that an Android device may have exposed banking credentials. Ask whether it should flag or freeze suspicious activity, replace cards, revoke online sessions, reset credentials, remove new payees, or apply additional verification. The exact process and any reimbursement or liability rules depend on your country and institution.
- Record what happened. Note the suspected app name, installation time, permissions, messages, web addresses, screenshots, and every transaction you do not recognize. Keep the phone available if the bank or a qualified technician needs information from it.
Do not let a fake helper take control
Do not follow unsolicited “support” instructions, install a remote-control application, or grant an unknown caller Accessibility or device-administrator access. Do not uninstall random system components in an attempt to speed up cleanup; removing a required component can make the phone unstable without removing the trojan.
Remove the trojan in a controlled sequence
Carry out the following steps after the bank has been contacted. Android menu names differ by manufacturer and version, so use the Settings search field when a label is not exactly the same on your phone.
PC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minute1. Run Google Play Protect
Open the Play Store, select your profile icon, choose Play Protect, and run a scan. Leave the protection feature enabled. Google says Play Protect handles potentially harmful applications, including trojans, phishing apps, and spyware. It can warn about an app, disable it, or remove it when the service identifies a threat.
Install pending Android and app updates from the phone’s normal update screens. Updates repair vulnerabilities and also bring newer malware detections. If Play Protect reports an app, follow its removal instruction and record the app name before deleting it.
2. Use an updated, reputable mobile-security scanner
Install a mobile-security product only from a trusted app store or the security provider’s verified site, and update its threat definitions before scanning. The FTC recommends updating security software and running a scan; Europol recommends a mobile-security solution that can detect malware, spyware, and malicious apps.
Choose a scanner using these criteria:
- Detection for malware, spyware, phishing, and malicious applications rather than only files.
- Support for the Android version and device model you actually use.
- Frequent threat-definition or cloud-detection updates.
- Clear privacy and data-handling disclosures.
- The ability to remove or quarantine a threat without demanding unrelated, excessive permissions.
- Independent testing or a transparent record of detection and support.
- A total cost you understand, including any recurring subscription.
A clean scan is reassuring but is not proof that no compromise occurred. Continue with password changes and bank monitoring even if the scanner finds nothing.

3. Remove the suspicious app
Open Settings, search for Apps or App management, locate the suspicious application, and choose Uninstall. If the app is not visible in the ordinary list, check recently installed apps and the Play Store’s app-management screen. Do not reinstall an APK or configuration file merely because the app’s icon looks familiar.
If Android refuses to uninstall it, the app may hold a privileged permission. Do not keep trying random fixes; revoke the privilege first.
4. Revoke unusual privileges before uninstalling
Review each of these areas in Settings. The exact path varies, but searching Settings for the bold term usually finds the relevant screen:
- Accessibility: remove access for any app that does not clearly need to assist you.
- Notification access: turn off access for unfamiliar apps that can read notifications or one-time codes.
- Device administrators: deactivate unknown administrators, then return to Apps and uninstall the app.
- VPN: remove an unfamiliar VPN profile or service.
- Install unknown apps: turn off permission for browsers, file managers, messaging apps, or other sources that do not need to install packages.
- Special app access: review “display over other apps,” unrestricted battery use, and similar elevated controls for unfamiliar software.
Take screenshots of these permissions before changing them if the bank or a technician may need evidence. Never disable a security control just because an on-screen message claims it is blocking a payment.
5. Get trusted technical help if removal fails
If the app returns after removal, cannot be disabled, or continues to control the screen, stop using the phone for sensitive work. The FTC recommends contacting the device manufacturer, a company you already know and trust, or a knowledgeable technician. Tell the technician that banking credentials may have been exposed and ask how evidence will be preserved before any wipe.
Special cases: rooted, modified, or heavily compromised phones
A phone with an unlocked bootloader, root access, or a modified Android build deserves a stricter response. Google warns that modified versions may miss automatic updates, allow harmful apps unrestricted access, and lose built-in Google security protections. For a rooted or modified phone, reinstall the manufacturer’s original operating system or move sensitive accounts to an unmodified device. Use the manufacturer’s documented restoration process or a qualified technician; a random firmware package can install more malware or permanently damage the phone.
Even after restoring the original system, treat credentials entered before restoration as exposed. The account-protection steps are still required.

When a factory reset is appropriate
A factory reset removes local apps and settings, but it is not a substitute for bank notification or password changes. Consider it when a trusted scan cannot remove the threat, the device remains controlled by an unknown app, the phone has been modified, or a qualified technician recommends it.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Contact the bank and preserve screenshots, app names, transaction details, and other evidence first.
- Back up irreplaceable photos, contacts, and documents. Do not back up suspicious APKs, unknown configuration files, or a complete app state that could restore the trojan.
- Use the phone’s official Settings reset function, or the manufacturer’s documented recovery process if Settings cannot be trusted.
- After the reset, install Android updates before normal use.
- Reinstall apps only from trusted sources. Check the publisher and requested permissions before each installation.
- Do not restore an old backup wholesale if it contains unknown applications or settings.
If you cannot verify that the reset completed correctly, keep banking on the known-clean device and have the manufacturer or a reputable technician inspect the phone.
Secure bank and other accounts from a clean device
Use the clean device for every step in this section. Do not change a password on the suspected phone and then assume the new password is safe.
Change the bank password and every reused password
Sign in through the bank’s official app or a website address you type yourself. Change the banking password, then change every other account that used the same password or a similar variation. The FTC recommends unique passwords and changing reused credentials after a compromise.
Prioritize accounts that can reset the bank account: your primary email, mobile-carrier account, password manager, and payment services. Use long, unique passwords generated by a trusted password manager on the clean device. Do not record them in a note that can be read by the suspected phone.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Enable two-factor authentication
Turn on two-factor authentication for the bank, primary email, and other critical accounts that support it. The FBI says any form of two-factor authentication is advantageous and highly effective for account security. Prefer a method that the bank supports and that you can recover safely; an authenticator application or a hardware FIDO2 security key can reduce reliance on text messages, while text-message codes may still be better than no second factor.
Register the second factor on both the bank account and the primary email account when supported. Store recovery codes offline in a secure place. Confirm that the recovery phone number and email address belong to you.

Revoke sessions and repair recovery settings
From the clean device, review the bank’s list of signed-in devices and revoke unknown sessions. Do the same for email, cloud storage, password management, and payment services. Change the recovery email and phone number if they were altered or could have been read by the trojan. Remove unfamiliar forwarding rules, filters, trusted devices, and app authorizations from your email account.
Audit money movement, not just completed transactions
Check recent and pending transactions, scheduled payments, payee changes, new beneficiaries, card-wallet enrollments, profile changes, and transfer limits. Contact the bank immediately about anything you do not recognize. Ask whether the bank wants the infected phone retained for investigation, wiped, or replaced, and follow its official fraud instructions. Continue checking statements and alerts for an extended period because an attacker may wait before using stolen credentials.

Decide when the phone is safe to use again
| Situation | Recommended action | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Play Protect and a reputable scanner find and remove one suspicious app; unusual privileges are revoked; the phone is unmodified and fully updated. | Use the phone cautiously after changing credentials on a clean device and monitoring accounts. | The immediate threat appears removed, but prior credentials may still be exposed. |
| The app cannot be uninstalled, returns after removal, or retains privileged control. | Stop sensitive use and obtain trusted technical help or perform a carefully prepared factory reset. | Persistent control means a normal uninstall has not established a clean state. |
| The phone is rooted or running a modified Android build. | Restore the original operating system or move banking permanently to an unmodified device. | Google warns that modified systems may lack updates and built-in protections. |
| Fraud is continuing, or the bank requests evidence. | Follow the bank’s instructions before wiping or replacing the phone. | A reset can destroy information useful to the fraud investigation. |
Prevent another banking-malware infection
After recovery, make these habits part of your normal setup:
- Install apps from trusted sources, research the publisher, and read permissions before installation.
- Avoid unsolicited links, attachments, and APK files delivered by text, email, social media, or pop-ups.
- Keep Android, the banking app, browsers, and security tools updated.
- Leave Google Play Protect enabled.
- Check the exact website address before signing in. A padlock alone does not prove that the address belongs to your bank.
- Log out after payments when the service provides a logout option.
- Avoid banking over public Wi-Fi; use a trusted mobile connection or a network you control.
- Turn on transaction and sign-in alerts, then read them rather than dismissing them.
- Review bank statements and account settings regularly.
- Keep a separate, updated device available for account recovery if your primary phone is lost or compromised.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
Changing the password on the infected phone
Problem: A keylogger, overlay, or Accessibility service may capture the new password.
Correction: Use a clean device, change the bank password and every reused password, then revoke unknown sessions.
Trusting a “clean” scan as the only remedy
Problem: A scanner can miss a new or concealed threat, and it cannot undo credentials already stolen.
Correction: Complete the account-protection process and monitor transactions even when no malware is detected.
Best Value
Deleting the suspicious app before recording evidence
Problem: The bank or technician may need the app name, permissions, messages, and timing.
Correction: Capture screenshots and notes first, unless the app is actively transferring money and the bank tells you to remove it immediately.
Installing a “security update” from a pop-up
Problem: Attackers commonly use urgent update messages to deliver an APK or obtain privileged access.
Correction: Update Android and apps only through the phone’s normal Settings or trusted app-store controls.
Resetting without checking backups
Problem: A backup can restore the same malicious application or configuration.
Correction: Back up irreplaceable personal files selectively and reinstall applications individually from trusted sources.
Bank contact, reporting, and liability
Report suspected unauthorized activity as soon as you notice it and keep the bank’s case number, dates, and names of representatives. Ask what deadlines apply to your account and country. Liability and reimbursement rules differ by jurisdiction, account type, payment method, and how quickly you report; no general promise that the bank will reimburse every loss is safe.
Recommended Free Tools
If the incident involved identity theft, a fraudulent transfer, or a stolen device, ask the bank whether it wants a police or national cybercrime report. Preserve original messages and transaction records, and avoid editing screenshots. Do not publish credentials, full card numbers, one-time codes, or recovery codes when seeking help.
