To fully remove an AI assistant’s access, break every link in the authorization chain: disconnect the account inside the assistant, revoke the app’s authorization in the account provider’s portal, and ask a workspace administrator to remove any administrator-granted access. Then handle data the assistant may already have retained—conversations, uploaded files, memories, cached copies, and managed indexes—as a separate cleanup task.
Uninstalling the assistant from your phone or computer is not enough. Changing a permission prompt is not the same as revoking an authorization, and disconnecting future access does not automatically erase information already stored.

The four layers you must review
An AI assistant can reach an account through several independent controls. Removing one layer may leave another active, so work from the assistant outward.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?

1. The assistant’s connected-account setting
This is the connection shown in the assistant’s Apps, Plugins, Integrations, or Connected accounts area. Disconnecting here tells the assistant to stop using that account through the integration. OpenAI’s guidance states: “To remove an app’s access, disconnect it or ask your workspace administrator to disable it.”

2. The provider’s authorization
When you approved access in Google, Microsoft, Apple, or another identity provider, that provider created an authorization grant. The grant can remain even after you disconnect inside the assistant. Revoke it from the provider’s connected-app or application-consent page.
3. Administrator-controlled consent
Work and school accounts can have permissions approved by an administrator for an entire organization. An individual user usually cannot remove those grants. The administrator must block the application, withdraw consent, or change the organization’s app policy.
4. Data and device residue
Authorization controls govern future reads and actions. They do not necessarily delete conversations, uploaded documents, memory summaries, provider-side indexes, browser sessions, saved passwords, extensions, or files already copied to another location. Audit those items separately.
What to do first
- Identify every account connected to the assistant. Include personal and work Google accounts, Microsoft accounts used for Outlook or OneDrive, Apple Accounts used for iCloud Mail, Calendar, or Contacts, and any other sign-in shown in the assistant.
- Record the exact account identity. Note the email address, tenant or organization name, and whether you personally approved the connection. This prevents you from revoking the wrong account when several profiles are open.
- Check for active workspaces. If the account is managed by an employer or school, expect an administrator step. Do not assume that a personal disconnect overrides an organization-wide grant.
- Preserve anything you need before deleting it. Export or copy legitimate work products, then remove sensitive uploads and conversations according to your organization’s retention rules.
- Plan a second pass. Revocation stops future access; cleanup of retained data and device sessions is a different operation.
Disconnect the account inside the AI assistant
ChatGPT-style connection
- Open the assistant and select Settings.
- Open Apps or Plugins, depending on the interface version.
- Select the app or service connected to the account you want to remove.
- Open the connected account’s options and choose Disconnect.
- Confirm the account shown in the confirmation dialog. If several accounts are listed, repeat the process for each one you no longer want connected.
Disconnecting is the action that stops the assistant from using that account through the integration. OpenAI separately warns that changing an app permission does not disconnect the app or revoke access already granted to the provider account.
Why changing a permission is insufficient
Permission prompts control what an app may request in the future or what appears in its consent screen. They do not invalidate an authorization that already exists. If you only turn off a permission toggle, leave the integration connected, or dismiss a prompt, the provider-side grant can remain active. Use the explicit Disconnect command, then revoke the provider authorization.

Revoke the provider-side authorization
After disconnecting in the assistant, open the account provider’s application-access page. Look for labels such as Connected apps, Third-party access, My Apps, Sign in with, or Manage connected accounts. Remove the entry that corresponds to the assistant or its integration.
Microsoft accounts: use My Apps
- Sign in to the Microsoft account that granted access.
- Open My Apps and locate the assistant or connected application.
- Open the application’s details.
- Select Revoke Permissions.
- Read the warning before confirming. Microsoft notes that removing a permission can break some of the application’s functionality.
You can revoke permissions that you personally consented to. If the permission was consented to by an administrator, the user cannot revoke it from My Apps; contact the organization’s Microsoft administrator instead.

- Sign in to your Apple Account and open the area for account access or connected accounts.
- Review Manage Connected Accounts and identify the assistant or integration.
- For authorizations involving iCloud Mail, Calendar, or Contacts, select Remove access for the app.
- Confirm removal, then repeat for any other Apple Account used with the assistant.
Apple’s support instructions use the wording Remove access. Removing one iCloud authorization does not automatically remove a separate authorization granted by another Apple Account.
Google Workspace accounts
For a managed Google Workspace account, the administrator controls whether users can authorize a third-party application. Google states that a blocked app cannot let users sign in with the managed account or request Google data.
- Tell your Workspace administrator the assistant’s application name, the affected user or group, and the data scopes that were approved.
- Ask the administrator to block the application or remove its organization-wide consent in the Workspace admin controls.
- Have the administrator verify that the app is blocked for the relevant organizational unit or group, not only for a single test account.
- Sign out of the assistant and reconnect only after the administrator confirms that the policy change is intentional.
If you use a personal Google account, review that account’s connected-app or third-party access page and remove the assistant there as well. Interface names can differ by account type, so confirm that the entry is for the exact assistant and email address you identified before disconnecting it.

Other work identity providers
Many companies route application consent through a central identity portal. Search the portal for the assistant under Enterprise applications, Application access, or a similar heading. If the portal shows that consent belongs to an administrator, submit a removal request to the identity or security team. Do not create a second personal authorization to work around a policy block; that can leave the same data accessible through another account.
Review devices, sessions, and local access
Removing the assistant’s account grant does not prove that every device session or local credential is gone. Perform a device audit after provider revocation.
Phones and tablets
- Uninstall the assistant app only after disconnecting its accounts and revoking provider access.
- Check the operating system’s account, password, and VPN or device-management sections for profiles associated with the assistant.
- Review notification access, accessibility privileges, file and photo permissions, microphone access, and contact access. Remove privileges the assistant no longer needs.
- Restart the device and confirm that the app is absent from the installed-app list and from any managed-app catalog.
Windows, macOS, and Linux computers
- Uninstall the desktop client, then inspect browser extensions and remove the assistant’s extension from every browser profile.
- Review saved passwords, passkeys, and autofill entries. Delete credentials that were created solely for the integration.
- Check startup items, background agents, scheduled tasks, and system login items for an assistant component.
- Sign out of the provider account in browsers that were used to approve the connection, then sign back in only after revocation is complete.
Active sessions and managed devices
Use the provider’s security page to review active sessions and recently used devices. Sign out sessions you do not recognize or no longer need. If the computer or phone is managed by an employer, ask the administrator to verify that device-management policy has removed the assistant and its credentials.
Clean up information the assistant may have retained
Revocation stops future access; it does not automatically delete information already stored. OpenAI’s connected-account instructions specifically say that disconnecting does not automatically delete existing or archived conversations, saved files, the Memory summary, or other saved memories.
Conversations and uploaded files
- Delete chats that contain account data, confidential text, exported mail, or file contents you no longer need.
- Remove uploaded files from the assistant’s file area or project workspace, not only from the original cloud drive.
- Check archived conversations and shared projects; archiving is not the same as deletion.
- Follow your employer’s retention or legal-hold requirements before deleting business records.
Memories and profile information
Review saved memories, custom instructions, profile notes, and conversation summaries. Delete entries that contain names, account identifiers, business details, or preferences you do not want retained. Disconnecting the account does not clear these records automatically.

Managed indexes and cloud copies
For Google-connected apps, OpenAI’s data-controls guidance says disconnecting does not automatically remove a separate administrator-managed Workspace index, delete existing conversations or saved memories, or change the original files in Google Drive. Ask the Workspace administrator whether an index, cache, or search connector exists and request its removal under the organization’s data-retention policy.
Original files
Removing an assistant connection does not delete or restore files in Gmail, Drive, Outlook, OneDrive, iCloud, or another source system. Inspect the original account for changes made while the assistant was connected, including renamed, moved, shared, or edited files. Restore or unshare items according to the provider’s audit history and your organization’s procedures.

Common situations and the correct response
“I deleted the app from my phone.”
That removes local software, not the cloud authorization. Reinstalling the app later could restore access if the provider grant is still valid. Complete the assistant disconnect and provider revocation, then review sessions and saved credentials.
“I changed the permission from read/write to read-only.”
A narrower permission may reduce what the assistant can request, but it is not revocation. Disconnect the integration and revoke the provider grant. If an administrator owns the consent, request removal from that administrator.
“The disconnect button is missing.”
You may be viewing a managed workspace, the wrong account, or a newer interface in which the connection appears under Apps rather than Plugins. Switch to the exact account that authorized the integration. If the control remains unavailable, ask the workspace administrator to disable it and revoke the provider authorization.
Best Value
“The provider portal shows no app, but the assistant still sees old files.”
The assistant may be displaying retained uploads, conversations, memories, or a managed index rather than reading the provider live. Delete those records in the assistant and ask the administrator to remove any managed index. Also check whether another account authorized the same integration.
“My work administrator blocked the app, but I can still use it with a personal account.”
A personal account is a separate authorization. Do not move company information into it. Remove the work connection, follow your organization’s policy, and use only approved tools for business data.
“I revoked access, but a file was changed.”
Revocation is not an undo operation. Check the provider’s activity or version history, restore the correct version, review sharing settings, and report the event to your administrator if the file contains regulated or confidential information.

Verification checklist
Use this checklist after you believe access is removed:
- The assistant no longer lists the account under Apps, Plugins, or connected accounts.
- The provider’s connected-app page no longer shows an active grant for the assistant, or the administrator confirms that the grant is blocked.
- Every account used with the assistant has been checked, including alternate personal and work profiles.
- Active sessions and unfamiliar devices have been signed out.
- Browser extensions, desktop clients, mobile apps, startup items, and saved credentials have been removed or reviewed.
- Conversations, uploaded files, memories, and project data have been deleted where policy permits.
- A Workspace administrator has confirmed removal of any managed index or organization-wide connector.
- Original Gmail, Drive, Outlook, OneDrive, iCloud, or other source files have been checked for unintended edits or sharing changes.
- You have documented the date, account, application, and administrator decision for a work or school account.
For workspace administrators
When an employee asks to remove an AI assistant, handle the request at both the identity and data layers.
- Identify the application ID, publisher, tenant, and OAuth scopes rather than relying only on the display name.
- Determine whether consent was granted by the user, an administrator, or an automated provisioning rule.
- Block or remove administrator consent for the affected organizational units and groups.
- Invalidate active sessions or refresh tokens where your identity platform supports that control.
- Inspect connector indexes, cached documents, conversation stores, and retention policies.
- Confirm whether original files were modified, moved, or shared while the connector was active.
- Give the requester a written confirmation stating what was revoked, what data was deleted, and what records must be retained.
Keep the authorization decision separate from deletion approval. A legal hold, incident investigation, or regulatory requirement may require preserving conversations or audit logs even after access is revoked.
When to escalate
Contact your security or identity team immediately if you see an unknown application, a consent you did not grant, unexpected file changes, mass downloads, or access that continues after both assistant disconnect and provider revocation. Provide the account identifier, application name, timestamps, affected files, and screenshots of the authorization pages. Do not continue testing the connection with sensitive data while an investigation is underway.
