How to Remove a Stripped Screw with Pliers

If the damaged screw head sticks above the surface, locking pliers (often called vise-grip pliers) can usually grip its sides well enough to turn it out. Clamp the jaws tightly on the head, rock the screw gently back and forth to break it loose, then continue turning it out. If the head is flush or recessed, pliers have no usable edge; stop before you damage the workpiece and switch to a suitable extractor or another method.

This guide covers the condition that makes pliers viable, the exact gripping technique, signs that you should stop, and the fallback procedure for a screw that cannot be reached from the outside.

What “stripped” means in this situation

A stripped screw normally has a damaged drive recess—the cross, star, hex, or other socket where the screwdriver or bit engages. The recess no longer gives the driver a dependable grip, so the bit slips instead of turning the fastener. That is different from stripped threads, where the threads in the screw or the material no longer hold properly. Pliers address the first problem only when they can grip the outside of the screw head.

The decisive question is not how badly the recess is damaged. It is whether enough metal is exposed around the head for the jaws to hold the sides without bearing on the surrounding surface. The Home Depot’s guide, updated May 6, 2025, states: “If enough of the screw is above the surface, try using pliers.”

Choose the method from the screw’s access

Screw condition Best first option Why Main risk
Head projects above the surface with accessible sides Locking pliers or vise-grip pliers The jaws can clamp the outer edge of the head Slipping jaws can round the head or mark the workpiece
Head projects, but a usable portion of the recess remains A correctly sized manual screwdriver, then pliers if needed A matching manual driver may still engage without drilling Forcing a slipping driver can worsen the damage
Head is flush or below the surface Screw extractor or another method suited to the material There is no outside edge for plier jaws to clamp Drilling can damage the screw or surrounding material
Head is partly exposed but blocked by a wall, bracket, or countersink Improve access or use an extractor Plier jaws must close on the screw itself Jaws may press against the workpiece instead of the fastener

There is no published universal success rate for any of these options. Access, remaining metal, the screw’s size, and the surrounding material determine which approach is reasonable.

What you need before you start

  • Locking pliers: their adjustable locking mechanism keeps pressure on the head more reliably than ordinary slip-joint pliers. Self-locking or vise-grip pliers are the types recommended in the cited repair guides.
  • A matching manual screwdriver: use this only if part of the original recess still accepts the correct size and profile.
  • A screw extractor and wrench: this is the fallback when the head cannot be gripped from outside. Extractor instructions specify the pilot-hole size.
  • Clear access to the head: the jaws must sit on the screw, not on a nearby panel, bracket, or finished surface.

Do not begin by repeatedly forcing a driver that is already slipping. The Home Depot guide warns that an ineffective screwdriver can make the stripping worse.

Step-by-step: remove the screw with locking pliers

1. Confirm that the head protrudes

Look at the screw from the side as well as from above. You need enough height and exposed perimeter for both jaws to close around the head. A head that is merely visible through a recess is not necessarily grippable: if the sides are inaccessible, the plier jaws cannot create a secure hold.

If the screw is flush with the surface, skip to the extractor section. Repeatedly trying to catch a flush head with pliers can damage the surrounding material without improving your grip.

2. Set the pliers to the head’s width

Open the locking pliers and adjust the screw at the handle end so the jaws close firmly around the screw head. Start with an opening that is slightly larger than the head, then tighten the adjustment until the tool locks when you squeeze the handles. The aim is a solid clamp on the screw—not maximum force applied against the workpiece.

3. Place the jaws on the sides, not the top

Approach the head from its side and place one jaw on each opposing edge. Keep the jaws parallel to the surface where possible. Do not clamp across a nearby panel or use the panel as a reaction point; the Home Depot and McCoy’s Building Supply instructions both emphasize gripping the exposed portion of the screw itself.

4. Lock the jaws and check for movement

Squeeze until the locking mechanism engages. Give the tool a small hand check before applying turning force. If the pliers rock, slide upward, or touch the surrounding surface, unlock them and readjust. A loose clamp is more likely to slip and further deform the head.

5. Rock gently to break the screw loose

Apply a small turning movement in one direction, then back in the other direction. This gentle right-and-left motion is the technique recommended by The Home Depot: it helps start movement without immediately applying a large force to a damaged head. Keep the jaws closed and watch whether the screw moves with the tool.

6. Continue turning once it loosens

When the screw begins to move, keep the pliers aligned with the head and turn it in the direction that backs the screw out. Use controlled, continuous movement rather than jerking. If the screw rises, reposition the pliers lower on the newly exposed head so the jaws maintain a square grip.

7. Stop at the first sign of slipping

Stop if the jaws slip, chew into the head, or begin pressing against the surrounding surface. Unlock the tool, inspect the damage, and decide whether a different jaw position or a screwdriver with remaining recess engagement is safer. If there is no secure external grip left, move to an extractor instead of repeating the same failed attempt.

How to improve the plier grip

Keep the force centered

Turning force should pass through the middle of the screw head. A diagonal pull twists the jaws off the edge and increases slipping. Hold the handles so the jaws stay level with the screw rather than lifting away from it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the largest safe contact area

Clamp on the broadest opposing faces available. A narrow bite on a corner concentrates force on a small amount of damaged metal; a broader bite distributes it across more of the head. This is especially important when the original drive recess has already removed material from the center.

Work with access, not against it

If a wall, washer, bracket, or countersunk opening prevents the jaws from closing squarely, do not use the obstruction as leverage. Reposition the work so the pliers can contact the screw directly, or choose a method that works from the center of the head.

When a manual screwdriver is still worth trying

A stripped head may retain enough of its original recess for a correctly sized manual screwdriver to engage. This Old House recommends trying a matching manual driver before escalating to an extractor when some recess remains usable. A manual driver lets you apply steady downward pressure while turning, but it should turn only while the bit remains seated.

If the bit climbs out of the recess or turns without moving the screw, stop. Continuing to force it can remove the remaining edges that might have supported a later extraction method. The screwdriver option is therefore a quick check for partial engagement, not a reason to keep fighting a visibly failed fit.

What to do when the head is flush or inaccessible

Pliers cannot grip a head that offers no exposed sidewall. In that case, a screw extractor is the documented fallback in the cited guides. An extractor creates or uses a prepared hole in the damaged fastener and bites while turning in the leftward direction.

Extractor procedure

  1. Read the extractor instructions first. Use the pilot-hole diameter specified for that extractor and screw size. There is no single pilot-hole size that applies to every extractor.
  2. Drill the pilot hole straight into the screw. Keep the hole centered so the extractor has balanced material to bite. Drilling introduces a risk of damaging the screw or the surrounding workpiece, so use this method only when the material and access can tolerate it.
  3. Insert the extractor. Seat it in the prepared hole according to the extractor’s instructions.
  4. Turn the extractor left with a wrench. BLACK+DECKER Support’s September 27, 2022 instructions specify inserting the extractor and turning it left with a wrench. The extractor’s bite should loosen the screw as you turn.
  5. Stop if the extractor does not bite. Forcing a slipping extractor can enlarge the hole or damage the fastener and nearby material. Recheck the pilot-hole size and alignment against the tool’s instructions before proceeding.

The extractor is not a promise of removal. Its advantage is access: it works from the center when the outside of the head cannot be clamped. Its trade-off is the drilling operation and the possibility of collateral damage.

Troubleshooting common failures

What you see Likely cause Next action
The pliers slide off immediately The jaws are too loose, angled, or sitting on too little exposed metal Readjust the locking tension and clamp squarely on opposing sides. If they still slide, stop and change methods.
The jaws lock, but the screw does not move The clamp is secure but the initial turning force is not freeing the fastener Try the gentle back-and-forth motion once more. Do not escalate to a hard jerk; inspect access and consider an extractor.
The pliers touch the surrounding surface The head is too close to the surface or the approach angle is wrong Reposition so the jaws bear only on the screw. If that is impossible, pliers are not the appropriate tool.
The head becomes more rounded The jaws are slipping or gripping a corner instead of broad side faces Stop immediately. Further attempts reduce the remaining metal available to any tool.
A screwdriver spins in the recess There is not enough remaining drive engagement Do not force it. Use external pliers if the head protrudes, otherwise follow the extractor procedure.
The extractor will not bite The pilot hole may be the wrong size, off-center, or too shallow for that extractor Stop, consult the extractor’s sizing instructions, and reassess whether drilling is safe for the workpiece.

Protect the surrounding workpiece

The main damage risk is not limited to the screw. A slipping plier jaw can scratch or dent the surface, while drilling for an extractor can enlarge the hole or mark nearby material. Keep the tool centered on the fastener, use only the force needed to maintain a grip, and stop when the tool no longer has a controlled purchase.

Access also determines whether a method is appropriate. A protruding head favors external gripping because it avoids drilling. A flush head removes that option, so the decision becomes whether an extractor’s pilot hole is safer than another technique for the particular material and location.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

After the screw comes out

Inspect the removed fastener and the hole before installing anything else. If the head was damaged but the threads are intact, the removal problem was confined to the drive recess. If the threads or the material around the hole are damaged, a replacement screw alone may not restore a secure hold; the hole may need a repair appropriate to the workpiece.

Do not reuse a screw whose head has been badly deformed by pliers or extraction. A fresh, correctly fitting fastener gives the driver full engagement and avoids repeating the same failure.

Quick decision checklist

  • Can you see and reach both sides of the head? If yes, locking pliers are the direct option.
  • Does any of the original recess still hold a matching manual screwdriver? If yes, try that carefully before drilling.
  • Is the head flush, recessed, or blocked? If yes, pliers cannot provide the required external grip.
  • Are the jaws slipping or damaging the surface? Stop rather than applying more force.
  • Are you prepared to drill? Use an extractor only with its specified pilot-hole size and with a clear understanding that drilling can damage the fastener or workpiece.

Sources and scope of the method

The exposed-head and locking-plier guidance is consistent across The Home Depot’s “How to Remove a Stripped Screw” guide (last updated May 6, 2025), McCoy’s Building Supply’s “Stripped Screw” guidance, and This Old House’s “How to Remove Stripped Screws.” BLACK+DECKER Support’s September 27, 2022 extractor instructions provide the pilot-hole and left-turning procedure. These instructions describe practical methods, not a guaranteed removal rate or a test result for every material and screw.
