If you uploaded a credit card photo to Grok, delete it from the Grok surface you used, contact the card issuer if any details are readable, and request removal of any public copies from their hosts. These are separate steps: deleting a Grok conversation does not establish that an image was never shared elsewhere or remove copies hosted by other services.
First, protect the card if its details are readable
If the card number, expiration date, or security code can be read, contact your bank or card issuer promptly through its official app or website, or the phone number printed on the card. Ask whether to lock the card, replace its number, or take another step. The Federal Trade Commission’s 2018 breach guidance says: “For payment card information – Contact your bank or credit card company to request a new card number.” FTC breach guidance.

Do not post or send the card number to Grok, a social platform, or an unverified contact while reporting the exposure. If the photo does not reveal usable financial details, still remove it from Grok and check for public copies; the urgency of a card-number replacement depends on what is visible and your issuer’s advice.
Delete the upload from the Grok service you used
Grok on X and Grok on grok.com or the Grok mobile app have different deletion controls. Identify where you uploaded the photo, then follow the matching route. Deleting a conversation does not delete an independent post or a copy hosted elsewhere.

If you used Grok on X
- In X, open Settings → Privacy & Safety → Data sharing and personalization → Grok → Delete Conversation History.
- Confirm deletion of your interactions, inputs, and results.
X says deleted Grok conversations are removed from its systems within 30 days, unless retention is required for security or legal reasons. This is a stated service deletion window, not a guarantee that every backup or third-party copy disappears. See the X Help Center’s Grok information.
If you used grok.com or the Grok mobile app
To remove one conversation, find it in the conversation history and use its delete control. To delete all conversations, use Settings → Data Controls. xAI says deletion can take up to 30 days, with exceptions for de-identified or pseudonymized information and for safety, security, or legal retention. Its Consumer FAQs also direct users to the privacy portal for additional personal-data requests.

If the available controls do not address your concern, use the provider’s privacy-request channel. The published deletion windows have exceptions, and the cited guidance does not provide a way for you to inspect every backend copy.

Check for public appearances without exposing the card again
- Start with the Grok conversation or file area where you uploaded the photo, and note any account name, caption, or accompanying text that could help identify a public appearance.
- Search for those non-sensitive clues and use image search only with a safely redacted crop. The crop must reveal no card number, expiration date, security code, name, or other personal details.
- For each apparent match, record the exact public page or post URL and the platform hosting it. Preserve only the evidence needed to report the copy; do not circulate a full-resolution image containing usable card details.
This can find public, searchable appearances, but it cannot establish that every copy is gone. Private groups, direct messages, deleted pages, and unindexed copies may not appear in search results. The available official guidance does not establish a safe, comprehensive reverse-image search for a sensitive financial image, so do not upload the full card photo to another image-search service.

Request removal from the site or platform hosting the image
Use the host’s reporting or privacy process to request removal of the original post or file. Include the specific URL and enough information to identify the exposed image, but avoid sending or reposting a usable card image unless the service’s secure process specifically requires evidence.

Request removal from Google Search
Google’s personal-information removal process lists credit card numbers and asks for the specific result URLs. Submit a request through Google’s personal information removal process. Google may remove qualifying results and considers public interest in some cases, so a request is not a guarantee.

Search-result removal and source removal are different: Google notes that content may remain online and accessible through shared links, social posts, or other search engines even if a result is removed from Google Search. Ask the host to remove the original and submit a search-result request as separate actions. See Google’s explanation of personal-information removal.
What Grok’s privacy setting does—and does not do
X says Grok interactions, inputs, and results may be used to train and fine-tune models. On X, the opt-out is under Privacy & Safety → Data sharing and personalization → Grok & Third-party Collaborators → Data Sharing. X also documents a separate personalization control. These settings govern data use; they do not locate or remove public copies.
The X Help Center warns: “Please do not share personal data or any sensitive and confidential information in your conversations with Grok.” See About Grok and X’s Grok privacy controls.
