Move away from the bees first. If a stinger is visible, brush or scrape it sideways with a fingernail, gauze, or the edge of a bank card—without squeezing or digging—then wash the skin and cool it for 10–20 minutes. The NHS recommends a sideways scrape, while CDC/NIOSH says never to squeeze the stinger or use tweezers. If breathing or widespread-allergy symptoms appear, use prescribed epinephrine and call emergency services instead of treating the sting as a minor injury.
First decide whether this is a routine sting or an emergency
Get away from the bees before examining the injury. A nearby hive or agitated bees can cause another sting while you are concentrating on the first one. Once you are in a safe place, check the person’s breathing, alertness and overall symptoms before spending time on stinger removal.

Call emergency services immediately for signs of anaphylaxis
Call 911 or your local emergency number if there is trouble breathing; swelling of the lips, face, eyelids, tongue or throat; dizziness, fainting or unconsciousness; a weak, rapid pulse; hives; or nausea, vomiting or diarrhea. Mayo Clinic says anaphylaxis usually begins 15 minutes to one hour after a sting, although you should seek help immediately when symptoms start rather than waiting for that window to pass. If the person has a prescribed epinephrine auto-injector, use it immediately according to its instructions, then call emergency services. Do not delay epinephrine to finish removing a stinger or applying an ice pack. Mayo Clinic first-aid guidance and Mayo Clinic’s symptom guidance describe these warning signs and timing.

When a local reaction is more likely
Pain, redness and swelling limited to the sting area are usually managed with prompt removal, cleaning and cooling. Continue watching the person because a reaction can change after the first few minutes. Anyone who feels generally unwell should contact a healthcare professional rather than relying only on home care.

How to remove a visible bee stinger
- Move to safety. Leave the immediate area of the bees before touching the sting.
- Look for the stinger in good light. A bee stinger may appear as a small black dot. Only attempt to remove material that is clearly visible on the surface. Mayo Clinic advises against trying to remove a stinger that is below the skin; it should come out naturally as the skin sheds. Mayo Clinic’s bee-sting treatment guidance explains this limit.
- Scrape or wipe sideways. Place a fingernail, the edge of a bank card, or a piece of gauze beside the visible stinger and move across the skin in one sideways motion. The NHS wording is: “Brush or scrape the stinger sideways with your fingernail or the edge of a bank card.” CDC/NIOSH also recommends wiping with gauze or scraping with a fingernail.
- Stop once it is off. Do not keep scraping an area that no longer has a visible stinger. Repeated friction can irritate the skin.
- Wash the site. Clean the area with soap and water after removal.
- Cool the skin. Apply a cloth dampened with cold water or an ice pack wrapped in cloth for 10–20 minutes. Repeat as needed, allowing the skin to warm between applications.
- Reduce pressure from swelling. Remove rings or other tight jewelry near a sting before swelling increases. If the sting is on an arm or leg, elevate that limb while resting.
CDC/NIOSH’s instruction is explicit: “Never squeeze the stinger or use tweezers.” That advice is consistent with using a flat edge or gauze to dislodge what is on the surface rather than pinching it or probing the skin. NHS insect-bite and sting guidance and CDC/NIOSH outdoor-worker guidance provide the removal instructions.
Which removal tool should you use?
Use the first suitable item you have immediately available. Speed matters more than finding a special kit, but the tool should let you move sideways without squeezing the stinger or digging below the surface.
| Tool | Why it can work | Main concern | Practical choice |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fingernail | Usually available and can make a short sideways scrape. | A long or dirty nail can irritate the skin; wash your hands when possible. | Good first option when the stinger is plainly visible. |
| Bank card edge | Flat, rigid and easy to slide across the skin. | A card that is bent or too thick may not contact the stinger cleanly. | Good alternative to a fingernail; specifically named by the NHS. |
| Clean gauze | Can wipe across the skin without pinching. | Loose fibers may catch on the area if you rub repeatedly. | Use a single gentle wipe or short sideways motion. |
| Tweezers | They can grasp a small object, but they require pinching. | CDC/NIOSH says not to use them; pinching can squeeze the stinger. | Do not use for this first-aid step. |
| Needle, knife or other sharp object | May seem useful for lifting an embedded object. | Encourages digging below the skin and can damage tissue. | Do not probe. Leave a nonvisible fragment alone. |
| Fingers | Can brush away a loose surface object. | Pinching between fingertips creates the same squeezing problem. | Brush sideways only; do not grasp and pull. |
The goal is not to excavate the skin. If you cannot see a stinger, switch to washing and cooling rather than trying different tools. Mayo Clinic notes that only bees leave a stinger and that a stinger under the skin should be allowed to come out as the skin naturally sheds. Mayo Clinic

What if the stinger is stuck under the skin?
Do not cut, needle, scratch or squeeze the area to search for it. A visible black dot can be scraped from the surface; an object you cannot see should not be chased beneath intact skin. Wash the sting, apply a wrapped cold pack and monitor symptoms. Arrange medical advice if pain, redness or swelling is worsening in a way that concerns you, if you feel unwell, or if the area later develops signs of infection.
Not every insect sting leaves a removable stinger. Mayo Clinic states that only bees leave a stinger, so finding no stinger does not mean you must keep probing. The immediate care for a painful local reaction remains cleaning and cooling after you have checked for emergency symptoms.
Aftercare for pain, itching and swelling
Cooling
A cloth dampened with cold water or an ice pack wrapped in cloth can reduce discomfort. Keep it on the skin for 10–20 minutes at a time, and repeat when needed. Do not place ice directly on bare skin.

Position and clothing
Elevate a stung arm or leg while the area is swollen. Remove rings, watches or tight bands near the site early; jewelry that fits before swelling can become difficult to remove later.
Over-the-counter options for mild local symptoms
For itching or swelling, Mayo Clinic lists 0.5% hydrocortisone cream, calamine lotion, oral antihistamines and nonprescription pain relievers as possible options. Follow the product label and your own clinician’s advice, especially for children, pregnancy, medication interactions, allergies or chronic conditions. These products are for mild local symptoms only and must not delay emergency treatment when a serious reaction is developing. Mayo Clinic first-aid guidance provides the listed options.
How long should bee-sting swelling last?
Mild pain and swelling often improve within hours. A stronger local reaction can become more noticeable over the next day or two and may last up to seven days, according to Mayo Clinic. The important issue is the direction of change: a reaction that is steadily settling is different from one that is spreading rapidly or accompanied by feeling unwell.

Contact a healthcare professional if symptoms have not gone away within three days, if you feel unwell, or if the site develops possible infection signs such as increasing warmth, redness, swelling or drainage. Seek urgent help at any time if breathing, faintness, facial or throat swelling, widespread hives or digestive symptoms occur; those are emergency warning signs rather than ordinary local swelling. Mayo Clinic’s symptom guidance and Mayo Clinic’s first-aid guidance give the seven-day, three-day and warning-sign thresholds.

Waiting to find special equipment
A fingernail, bank card edge or gauze is enough for the recommended sideways technique. Do not postpone removal while looking for a dedicated extractor.
Pinching with tweezers or fingertips
Pinching is specifically discouraged by CDC/NIOSH. Use a sideways scrape or wipe instead.

Digging for a stinger that cannot be seen
Only remove what is visible. Probing below the surface can create a second injury without providing a useful first-aid benefit.
Putting ice directly on the skin
Wrap the ice pack or use a cold damp cloth. Keep each application within the 10–20-minute interval.
Treating a serious reaction as a local irritation
Emergency symptoms take priority over cleaning, cooling and anti-itch products. Use prescribed epinephrine promptly and call emergency services when those symptoms appear.

A simple bee-sting plan to keep ready
- Know where a clean cloth, gauze or a bank card can be reached quickly.
- If you have a prescribed epinephrine auto-injector, keep it accessible and know its instructions.
- People with a history of severe sting allergy may choose an insect-sting allergy medical-alert bracelet so others can recognize the risk during an emergency.
- When outdoors, leave the immediate area before examining a sting; first aid is safer away from active bees.
These preparations support first aid but do not replace emergency care. A cold pack, hydrocortisone cream or calamine lotion can be optional aids for mild symptoms only; none should delay epinephrine or an emergency call.
