What you can remap on the Xbox Nano Controller
The Nano’s defining programmable control is its Action Button. Xbox says this button can be customized for screenshots, gameplay capture, and other frequently used shortcuts. In practice, Xbox Accessories presents the controls and assignments supported by the controller’s current firmware; the app does not guarantee that every function available on another Xbox controller will appear for the Nano.

James Hunter, General Manager of XBOX Accessories, described the feature this way: “The XBOX Nano controller includes a rechargeable battery and a programmable Action Button that can be customized for features like screenshots, gameplay capture, and other frequently used shortcuts.” That wording matters: the Nano is not documented as having the same set of rear paddles or extra controls as an Elite controller. If you see only the Action Button in the configuration screen, that is the control Xbox has specifically identified for this model.

Do you need a USB-C cable?
You need one for the Windows Xbox Accessories workflow. The Nano also uses USB-C for charging, and Xbox says the cable is sold separately. On a PC, connect the cable directly, wait for Windows to identify the controller, and then open Xbox Accessories. If the app does not show the Nano, try another data-capable cable and a different USB port before changing software settings.
Step-by-step: remap the Nano Action Button
- Connect the controller to the target device. On Xbox, pair the Nano over Xbox Wireless. On Windows, connect it with a compatible USB-C data cable for the Xbox Accessories workflow.
- Power on the Nano. The controller must be on and recognized by the console or PC. If it is not listed, resolve the connection first; the configuration controls cannot be edited for a device the app cannot see.
- Open Xbox Accessories. Launch the Xbox Accessories app on the connected Xbox or Windows PC. Xbox’s published instructions describe the app being used while a supported Xbox controller is connected and powered on.
- Choose Configure. Select the controller in the app, then select Configure to enter the profile editor.
- Create a profile or edit one. Choose the option to create a new profile when you want a separate layout, or open an existing profile when you want to change its current assignment. Use separate profiles for different games or for gameplay and capture tasks so you do not have to rebuild the mapping each time.
- Select the Action Button. In the controller diagram or control list, select the programmable Action Button. If the app exposes another control for remapping, select that control instead; the available list is determined by the Nano firmware and the app version.
- Choose the primary use. Pick the function shown by Xbox Accessories. The Nano launch material names screenshots, gameplay capture, and other frequently used shortcuts as examples. If the editor offers a keyboard key, select it only when the game or application accepts that input.
- Save the configuration to a profile slot. Save the edited profile and assign it to one of the available slots. A profile that has not been saved to a slot will not be the layout you can recall during play.
- Activate the slot. During play, press the Nano’s Profile button to switch to the slot you assigned. Confirm the indicator or on-screen state used by your controller and console so you know which profile is active.
- Test the result. Press the Action Button in the game or app and verify that the intended action occurs. For keyboard assignments, use the Xbox Accessories test icon where available to check the key emitted by the controller, then test the same key inside the game.
Choosing a useful assignment
Screenshots and gameplay capture
A capture shortcut is the clearest use case documented for the Nano. Assign the Action Button to the screenshot or gameplay-capture function shown in Xbox Accessories, then test it from the game screen rather than from the dashboard. A screenshot should produce the console’s normal capture confirmation; a recording shortcut should show the corresponding capture status. If neither appears, the assignment may not be available on that platform or the profile may not be active.

Other shortcuts
Xbox describes the Action Button as suitable for other frequently used shortcuts, but it does not publish a universal list for every Nano firmware version. Treat the choices displayed in your app as authoritative. Do not assume that an action available on an Elite Wireless Controller Series 2 or Xbox Adaptive Controller is automatically available on the Nano.

Xbox documentation allows one non-modifier key per controller button, with modifier combinations such as Ctrl, Shift, Alt, or Win. That means a profile can emit a single ordinary key or a combination such as Ctrl plus another key, subject to what the app exposes. Keyboard input remains game dependent: some games support it fully, some only partially, and some do not respond to it at all.

On PC, keyboard-key mapping over Bluetooth is not supported. Use the USB connection, or an Xbox Wireless Adapter where that feature requires it. If the key works in the Xbox Accessories test tool but not in a game, the game’s input support is the likely limitation rather than a failed remap.
How profiles work while you play
A profile is a saved set of assignments, not a permanent hardware modification. You can keep one layout for capture controls, another for a game that benefits from a shortcut, and a default layout for ordinary play. Save each layout to a separate available slot, then use the Profile button to select the slot before entering a match or level.

Check the active profile whenever a button appears to have reverted. Switching profiles changes the behavior immediately, so a perfectly valid mapping can seem broken when a different slot is active. If you edit a profile but do not save it, the previous saved version remains the one available for play.
Verify the remap before relying on it
- With the desired profile active, press the Action Button once in a low-risk area of the game or dashboard.
- For a screenshot assignment, look for the console’s normal capture confirmation and check that the image appears in the expected capture location.
- For gameplay capture, start and stop a short recording, then confirm that the clip was created.
- For a keyboard assignment, open the Xbox Accessories test view, use its test icon to verify the emitted key, and then repeat the test in the target game.
- If the action is delayed, triggers the wrong function, or does nothing, return to the profile editor and confirm both the selected control and the active slot.
Troubleshooting common failures
The Nano does not appear in Xbox Accessories
- Power the controller off and on, then reconnect it.
- On Windows, replace the USB-C lead with a known data-capable cable and connect directly to the PC instead of through an unpowered hub.
- On Xbox, confirm that the console has paired the Nano over Xbox Wireless before opening the app.
- Update the controller and Xbox Accessories app when an update is offered. The available controls can depend on the firmware and app version.
The Action Button is missing
First confirm that the connected device is the XBOX Nano Controller and not a different controller selected in the app. Then check that the controller is connected through the supported path for your platform and that the app is current. The published material identifies the Action Button as programmable, but it does not document a Nano-specific error-code procedure; if the control still does not appear, the assignment may not be exposed by the installed firmware or current app.

The profile saves, but the old behavior remains
- Verify that you saved the edited profile to a slot rather than merely changing a draft.
- Press the Profile button to activate that slot.
- Test again after confirming the slot indicator or status shown by the controller or console.
- If several profiles use the same button, inspect the active slot before editing another profile.
A keyboard shortcut works in the test screen but not in the game
Keyboard support is controlled by the game. Some titles accept keyboard input only in menus, some accept only selected keys, and some ignore controller-generated keyboard input. Test the same key with a game known to support keyboard controls. On PC, also ensure the controller is connected by USB or the supported Xbox Wireless Adapter; Bluetooth cannot carry the keyboard-key mapping feature.
The capture command does nothing
Return to the profile and verify that the Action Button is assigned to the capture function rather than a keyboard key with a similar purpose. Make sure the profile is active, then test from the game itself. If the capture option is not offered at all, Xbox Accessories is not exposing that function for the current Nano connection, profile, or firmware.
Important limits of Nano remapping
- The app determines the choices. Xbox has specifically documented screenshots, gameplay capture, and other shortcuts for the Nano Action Button. It has not published a complete Nano-specific matrix of every possible assignment.
- Keyboard support is conditional. One non-modifier key can be assigned per controller button, with modifier combinations allowed, but games decide whether those inputs are recognized.
- Bluetooth is not sufficient for PC keyboard mapping. Use USB or an Xbox Wireless Adapter when keyboard mapping is required.
- Profiles are connection-specific in practice. A layout configured on one device should be checked again when you move to another console or PC, because the available functions and connection path can differ.
- Standard-controller remapping has different behavior from Elite storage. Xbox’s older guidance says Elite remaps are stored directly on the Elite controller, while standard-controller mappings do not transfer automatically to another console. Do not assume that a Nano profile will follow you to every Xbox without checking the destination device.
Remapping checklist
- Use an Xbox Wireless connection on Xbox consoles.
- Use a compatible USB-C data cable for Xbox Accessories on Windows.
- Power on the Nano before launching the app.
- Open Configure and create or edit a profile.
- Select the Action Button and choose an option that the app actually lists.
- Save the profile to a slot.
- Press the Profile button to activate that slot.
- Test the function in the target game or app.
- For keyboard mappings, avoid Bluetooth on PC and confirm the game supports keyboard input.
Availability and support context
The XBOX Nano Controller was announced on October 14, 2026. XBOX stated a price of $49.99 in 2026, while the Microsoft Store listing gives November 4, 2026 as the release date. Availability, regional pricing, and retailer stock can differ from those announced figures.

The controller’s internal rechargeable battery means you should plan for charging separately from the remapping process; Xbox says the USB-C cable is sold separately. No independent performance, battery-life, or Nano-specific error-code testing is established here, so connection and troubleshooting advice is limited to the documented Xbox Accessories workflow and the published platform limitations.
