Windows has different tools for different kinds of remapping. To swap left- and right-click, use the built-in mouse setting. To change what a keyboard key or key combination sends, use Microsoft PowerToys Keyboard Manager. To assign a side button, thumb button, or other physical mouse control to a custom command, you generally need software made for that mouse model; Windows’ ordinary mouse page does not provide a universal button-assignment editor.
Accessibility features solve a different problem: Mouse Keys lets a numeric keypad control the pointer, Sticky Keys lets you enter a multi-key shortcut one key at a time, Filter Keys changes how brief or repeated keystrokes are handled, and On-Screen Keyboard supplies an alternative way to enter keys. The steps below separate these functions so you can choose the method that actually changes the input you care about.
Choose the right Windows remapping method
Start by identifying the physical input and the result you want. A primary-button swap is a Windows setting. A keyboard remap is a PowerToys configuration. A physical mouse-button assignment is normally device software. An accessibility feature changes how you operate the pointer or keyboard, but does not redefine arbitrary hardware buttons.

Swap the left and right mouse buttons in Windows
Windows 11
- Open Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices, then Mouse.
- Find Primary mouse button.
- Choose Left or Right.
The change takes effect as the Windows primary-click choice. Selecting Right, for example, makes the physical right button perform the primary click and the physical left button perform the secondary click. This is useful when you prefer a left-handed layout or when a pointing device is being used in a different physical position.

Windows 10
- Open Settings.
- Choose Devices, then Mouse.
- Change the primary-button selection to Left or Right.
Microsoft’s mouse-settings documentation also covers pointer speed, scrolling, and the older Mouse Properties interface. Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, so the setting may still be present on an installed Windows 10 system, but continuing to use that release has broader support and security implications.
What this setting cannot do
The primary-button control is not a general remapping table. It does not let you turn a thumb button into Ctrl+C, launch a particular program, run a script, or assign a custom function to the scroll-wheel click. It changes the primary-versus-secondary interpretation of the two main buttons. Pointer speed and scrolling controls adjust behavior, not button identity.
If you need custom actions for side buttons, inspect the utility supplied for your exact mouse. A programmable mouse may expose button assignments through its own software, while a basic mouse may expose no configurable controls beyond the Windows primary-button choice.
Remap keyboard keys and shortcuts with PowerToys
Microsoft PowerToys Keyboard Manager is the Windows-focused option for changing keyboard input. Its documentation is maintained as the feature evolves; the page notes a redesigned editor beginning with PowerToys 0.100, so the arrangement of controls or screenshots can differ from what you see. Use the current labels in your installed version rather than relying on an older screenshot.
Install and open Keyboard Manager
- Install Microsoft PowerToys from Microsoft’s official distribution channel.
- Open PowerToys Settings.
- Select Keyboard Manager in the left navigation.
- Turn on Keyboard Manager if it is disabled.
The complete, current interface and its documented limitations are described in Microsoft Learn’s Remap Keys and Shortcuts with PowerToys Keyboard Manager. Keep PowerToys running when you expect its mappings to be active; Keyboard Manager is the component that intercepts the configured input and emits the replacement.

Change one key with “Remap a key”
- In Keyboard Manager, choose Remap a key.
- Select Add key remapping (the wording may vary slightly by release).
- In the left, or input, column, select the physical key you will press. You can press the key to identify it or choose it from the list.
- In the right, or output, column, select the key, shortcut, or text output that Windows should send.
- Save or apply the mapping.
For example, you can make an infrequently used key send another key. The mapping concerns keyboard input codes; it does not turn a mouse button into a keyboard key. If you leave an output unassigned, the editor may warn you or refuse to save, depending on the version.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Change a key combination with “Remap a shortcut”
- Choose Remap a shortcut in Keyboard Manager.
- Add a shortcut remapping.
- Set the input combination, such as a Windows, Control, Alt, or Shift combination.
- Set the output key or shortcut to send.
- Apply the mapping.
Shortcut remapping is separate from single-key remapping. A key that has been changed in Remap a key is not automatically treated as a complete shortcut rule, so configure both when your goal requires both behaviors.
Limit a shortcut to one application
When the editor offers an application target, enter the target application rather than leaving the rule global. An app-specific rule is useful when the same combination should retain its normal meaning everywhere else. Verify the application identifier expected by the editor and test while that program is focused; a shortcut rule cannot affect a window that is not the selected target.
Application shortcuts are not universal. Microsoft’s Windows keyboard tips and tricks page documents commonly used combinations, but individual programs can reserve, redefine, or ignore them. If a mapping works in a text editor but not in a game, terminal, browser, or professional application, consult that program’s own shortcut documentation before assuming the remap is broken.
Run PowerToys with the required elevation
A normal PowerToys process may not be able to change input in an elevated application or window. If a mapping works in ordinary programs but fails in a program launched with administrator privileges, run PowerToys with equivalent elevation and test again. Use the least privilege necessary, and do not elevate unrelated software simply to make a shortcut work.

Why a keyboard remapper cannot reassign mouse buttons
Keyboard Manager handles keyboard key codes and keyboard shortcut combinations. Microsoft’s documentation explicitly separates those inputs from mouse buttons. Selecting a keyboard output does not create a mouse-button hook, and choosing a mouse button is not a supported substitute for choosing a physical keyboard key.
That distinction explains a common failed approach: opening Remap a key, clicking a mouse button while choosing the input, and expecting PowerToys to record it. If the mouse button is not accepted, nothing is wrong with your mouse; it is outside Keyboard Manager’s keyboard-focused scope. Use the Windows primary-button setting for a left/right swap or the mouse’s compatible configuration utility for additional buttons.
Assign functions to extra mouse buttons
Check the mouse’s own configuration software
Look up the exact model and its current Windows utility. Confirm that the software supports your Windows edition, recognizes the connected device, and exposes the button you want to change. Typical utilities may offer application profiles or commands, but available actions differ by device. Do not assume that a five-button mouse, a wireless variant, and a similarly named revision share the same feature set.
- Connect the mouse directly while configuring it, especially if the utility cannot detect it through a hub or dock.
- Install only the utility intended for the exact model and Windows version.
- Check whether a profile must be saved to the device or remain active through a background service.
- Test the assignment in the application where you will use it, because some programs reserve buttons or interpret them differently.
Microsoft accessories
Microsoft’s support result for How to reassign mouse buttons? describes Mouse and Keyboard Center for supported Microsoft accessories. The localized support page is available at Microsoft’s support page. The documented compatibility is device-specific and should not be generalized to unrelated brands. If the model is not listed or the utility does not recognize it, Windows’ built-in primary-button swap may be the only native option.
When no utility supports the button
There is no universal Windows mouse-button remapping panel comparable to Keyboard Manager. You can still use the mouse normally, change the primary button, or choose an accessibility alternative, but assigning an arbitrary command to an unsupported side button requires hardware and software that expose that control. A programmable mouse is therefore a category-level solution, not a guarantee; verify the exact button functions and required software before buying one.

Use Mouse Keys when you need pointer control without a mouse
Mouse Keys is an accessibility feature, not a button remapper. It uses the numeric keypad to move the pointer and perform clicks or drags. The numeric keypad can select the left, right, or both mouse buttons for clicking, which helps when a physical mouse is unavailable or difficult to operate.
- Open Settings.
- Go to Accessibility, then Mouse.
- Turn on Mouse keys.
- Use the numeric keypad controls shown by Windows to move, click, and drag.
Microsoft’s step-by-step instructions are in Use Mouse keys to move the mouse pointer. Because Mouse Keys consumes numeric-keypad input for pointer control, consider whether you still need those keys for numeric entry before enabling it.
Other Windows accessibility options
Sticky Keys
Sticky Keys lets you enter a multi-key shortcut one key at a time instead of holding every modifier simultaneously. It supports alternative operation of combinations such as a modifier plus another key, but it does not change what the shortcut means or assign a new command to it.
Filter Keys
Filter Keys adjusts keyboard sensitivity so brief, repeated, or unintended keystrokes can be ignored or handled differently. It is useful when accidental repeats are the problem; it is not a replacement for a key-to-key mapping.
On-Screen Keyboard
On-Screen Keyboard displays a software keyboard for entering keys with a mouse, touch input, or another pointing method. It provides an alternative way to press a key, not a persistent reassignment of the physical keyboard.
Microsoft groups these tools with other input aids in Make your mouse, keyboard, and other input devices easier to use. Choose them when the problem is access, dexterity, accidental repeats, or lack of a mouse rather than a desire to redefine a command.

Test a remap and diagnose failures
Confirm which layer should handle the input
- If the goal is left-click on the right side, check Primary mouse button.
- If the goal is one keyboard key sending another, check Remap a key.
- If the goal is a key combination sending another combination, check Remap a shortcut.
- If the goal is a physical side button launching an action, check the mouse’s device utility.
- If the goal is pointer control without a mouse, check Mouse keys.
Test in a neutral application first
After applying a keyboard mapping, test it in a simple text editor or another application that visibly accepts the expected key. Then test the target program. This separates a mapping failure from an application that intercepts, reserves, or ignores the shortcut.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Check scope and focus
For a global rule, make sure the mapping is enabled and PowerToys is running. For an app-specific rule, focus the named application and verify that its executable or target label matches what the editor expects. A rule aimed at one program will not appear to work in another.
Check elevation
If only an administrator-launched window ignores the mapping, run PowerToys with matching elevation and repeat the test. If the mapping then works in ordinary windows but not in the elevated one, the difference is permission level rather than the key definition.
Look for conflicts and reserved input
Some keys are reserved by Windows, firmware, the keyboard driver, or the application itself. Other utilities can also intercept the same combination. Disable competing hotkey tools temporarily, remove duplicate mappings, and try an unused key combination. Keep a record of your original mapping so you can restore it if a program becomes difficult to control.
Undo safely
Return to the relevant Keyboard Manager list and delete or disable the mapping, then apply the change. For a mouse, select the original primary-button choice in Windows or restore the device profile in its utility. If a remap prevents convenient access to Settings, use another keyboard, On-Screen Keyboard, or a second input device to reverse it.

- Need left/right click swapped? Use Windows mouse settings.
- Need Caps Lock, a function key, or another keyboard key to send a different key? Use Keyboard Manager’s Remap a key.
- Need one keyboard shortcut to send another? Use Remap a shortcut, and set an application target if it should be limited to one program.
- Need a thumb or side mouse button to perform a custom action? Use software that explicitly supports the exact mouse model; Keyboard Manager is not the right tool.
- Need to operate the pointer without a mouse? Enable Mouse Keys.
- Need easier multi-key entry or fewer accidental keystrokes? Try Sticky Keys, Filter Keys, or On-Screen Keyboard.
These choices keep the remapping layer aligned with the input device. Windows handles the primary-button preference, PowerToys handles keyboard codes, compatible mouse software handles hardware-specific buttons, and accessibility tools provide alternate ways to operate the same controls.
