How to Remap Chromebook Keyboard Keys with Built-In Settings and Extensions

Use ChromeOS’s built-in remapping screen first: open Settings > Device > Keyboard > Remap keyboard keys, choose the action for a listed key, and save by simply leaving the page. This is the supported way to change behaviors such as making Search or Launcher act as Caps Lock. Select Restore defaults on the same screen to undo the change.

Extensions solve a different problem. They can assign shortcuts to an extension’s own commands or alter supported shortcuts inside particular websites, but they cannot provide unrestricted, system-wide replacement of Chromebook keys. Browser- and operating-system-reserved shortcuts still take priority.

What Chromebook key remapping can and cannot change

ChromeOS remapping changes the action associated with keys that appear in the keyboard settings for the device. Google documents Search/Launcher, modifier keys, Escape, Backspace and Caps Lock among the customizable choices. The exact list and labels can differ between a Chromebook’s built-in keyboard and an attached keyboard, so use the controls that your Chromebook actually displays rather than expecting any arbitrary key-to-key conversion.

That distinction matters. A remap can change what a supported key does at the ChromeOS level, but it is not a general-purpose keyboard firmware editor. Some navigation keys and combinations are exposed through separate options instead of the single-key remap list. ChromeOS also treats a built-in keyboard and an external keyboard as separate settings categories.

No purchase is required for supported remapping. An external keyboard is optional if you prefer a different physical layout or want a separate keyboard; it is not needed to follow the built-in instructions.

Remap a Chromebook’s built-in keyboard

  1. Open the Settings app on your Chromebook.
  2. Under Device, select Keyboard.
  3. In the Built-in keyboard section, select Remap keyboard keys.
  4. Choose a key shown in the remapping list, then select the action you want that key to perform.
  5. Close Settings and test the key in a text field or another suitable app.

The change applies to the supported key and action you selected. ChromeOS does not require a separate Apply button in this flow; returning to the settings page later shows the current assignment.

Make Search or Launcher work as Caps Lock

Google’s Chromebook Help gives this as the standard example: “For example, you can make the Search or Launcher key work as a Caps Lock key.” In the remapping screen, select Search or Launcher—the label depends on the Chromebook’s keyboard—and choose Caps Lock as its action. Press that key once to switch capitalization on or off, just as you would with a conventional Caps Lock key.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you only need capitalization occasionally, leave the mapping unchanged and press Alt+Search or Alt+Launcher to toggle Caps Lock. This temporary shortcut is useful when you want to preserve the normal Search or Launcher function the rest of the time.

Restore the original behavior

Return to Settings > Device > Keyboard > Remap keyboard keys and select Restore defaults. ChromeOS restores the default settings for the remappings on that screen. If you changed an option in another keyboard section, reset that option separately rather than assuming the remap reset covers every keyboard preference.

Which keys and actions are exposed?

Modifier, control and editing keys

Google’s input-shortcuts guidance identifies modifier keys, Escape, Backspace and Caps Lock as customizable categories. Depending on the keyboard and ChromeOS version, the menu can use labels such as Search or Launcher and can present Ctrl and Alt-related behavior as separate choices. Pick from the action names shown in your own menu; a key that is available on one device may not appear in the same form on another.

Six-pack and navigation keys are separate settings

Older Chromebook keyboard help describes additional configuration for Insert, Delete, Home, End, Page Up and Page Down. These are not evidence that every key can be freely reassigned in the main remapping picker. Treat them as separate keyboard options and look for their own controls under Settings > Device > Keyboard.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The same documentation discusses changing Ctrl, Alt and Search/Launcher behavior and selecting the modifier used for a right-click. Those settings can be useful when adapting a keyboard layout, but they should not be confused with assigning an arbitrary key to an arbitrary command.

Configure an external keyboard

Connect the keyboard, then reopen Settings > Device > Keyboard. ChromeOS exposes a distinct External keyboard category in addition to Built-in keyboard. Choose the external-keyboard controls when the attached device is the one you need to change.

A Windows keyboard’s Windows key serves as Search/Launcher on Chromebook. If you want that key to behave as Caps Lock, configure the external keyboard’s remapping options rather than changing only the built-in keyboard selection. Conversely, a setting made for the built-in keyboard should not be treated as proof that every connected keyboard has changed.

When the external keyboard has fewer choices

Use the available choices as the source of truth. ChromeOS may show a different set of keys or actions for an attached Windows or Mac keyboard, and the labels can differ from those on the Chromebook itself. If the desired key is absent, the built-in settings do not offer that assignment for that device; an extension cannot turn a page-level shortcut into a system-wide replacement.

Use an extension to add a shortcut for an extension command

Chrome extensions can declare commands that trigger their own actions. To inspect or change those shortcuts, enter chrome://extensions/shortcuts in the address bar, or open the extensions management page and use its shortcut-management link.

  1. Install and enable the extension whose feature you want to trigger.
  2. Open chrome://extensions/shortcuts.
  3. Find the extension in the list and locate the command you want to invoke.
  4. Click the shortcut field and press the key combination you prefer, if the field accepts it.
  5. Test the command on a page where that extension is active.

This method assigns a shortcut to that extension’s command; it does not change what the physical key means to ChromeOS everywhere. A shortcut that Chrome or the operating system reserves—window-management commands are one documented class—keeps priority, so an extension command cannot override it.

Why an extension shortcut may not work

  • The combination is reserved: ChromeOS or Chrome handles it before the extension receives it.
  • The extension is inactive: The command may require the extension to be enabled or applicable to the current page.
  • The command is not exposed: Extensions can only offer commands that their developers define.
  • The key was remapped in ChromeOS: A system-level assignment can change the key event before you test the extension’s shortcut. Check both settings screens and avoid overlapping assignments.

Use a website-focused remapping extension

A site-aware remapping extension works inside webpages that handle keyboard shortcuts. The Chrome Web Store description for Simple Key Remap says it changes website-built-in shortcuts one site at a time. That is useful for a web app whose own controls conflict with your preferred layout, but it is not a Chromebook keyboard remapper.

Install such an extension only when the problem is inside a particular site. Configure the site or page scope offered by the extension, assign the replacement key according to its instructions, and test the web app’s control. Some sites may not respond to remapped keys, and browser shortcuts—such as commands for opening or closing tabs—cannot be changed by this type of tool.

System shortcut versus website shortcut

Use this quick test before installing anything:

  • If the key must behave differently in Settings, Files, the sign-in screen or every app, start with ChromeOS keyboard settings.
  • If the key should launch a feature supplied by one extension, use chrome://extensions/shortcuts.
  • If the change is needed only inside one web app, a website-focused extension may help, subject to that site’s support and the browser’s reserved shortcuts.

Before changing anything, define the scope

Write down where the new behavior is needed. “I want Caps Lock” usually means a ChromeOS-level change, while “I want this writing tool to open with one shortcut” means an extension command. “This editor uses an inconvenient key” points to a site-level adjustment. Choosing the scope first prevents the common mistake of installing a website tool when the desired behavior is needed in Files or another app.

Also identify the physical keyboard. A Chromebook can have a built-in keyboard and a connected keyboard active at the same time, and ChromeOS presents separate categories for them. Test the key you actually intend to change before and after editing a setting. If you switch from the laptop keyboard to a Windows or Mac keyboard, revisit the corresponding external category rather than assuming the first assignment follows it.

How to test a remap safely

  1. Change one key or one shortcut at a time.
  2. Test in a plain text field so you can see whether Caps Lock, Backspace or another editing action is working.
  3. Test the command in the app or website where you need it, because an extension command may be available only when that extension is active.
  4. Try the original key in a second context. If it works in the text field but not on one website, the page—not ChromeOS—may be ignoring the event.
  5. Record the old setting before making several changes. Use Restore defaults for the main remapping list if you need a quick rollback, then review separate navigation or modifier settings independently.

This process separates three possible causes: the ChromeOS assignment, the extension’s command registration, and the website’s own keyboard handling. It also makes it easier to explain the layout to another person using the Chromebook.

Common layout-adaptation decisions

Preserve Search while adding occasional Caps Lock

Use Alt+Search or Alt+Launcher instead of a permanent remap. This keeps Search or Launcher available for its normal purpose and avoids changing the layout for people who share the device.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use Caps Lock continuously

Assign Search or Launcher to Caps Lock in the relevant keyboard category. This is the clearest choice when the key’s original purpose is not useful to you and you want the behavior in more than one website or app.

Adapt a Windows keyboard

Remember that the Windows key is interpreted as Search/Launcher on Chromebook. Open the external-keyboard section and choose only actions that appear there. The external menu may not match the built-in menu, so do not infer that a missing option can be added with an extension.

Change a six-pack key

Look for the separate Insert, Delete, Home, End, Page Up or Page Down controls described in Chromebook keyboard help. These are additional keyboard configuration choices, not proof that the primary remap picker supports every navigation-key conversion.

Extension conflicts and practical limits

Keep extension shortcuts distinct from ChromeOS remaps. If a key is reassigned at the system level and the same key combination is also assigned to an extension command, the result can be confusing: the system assignment may change the event before the extension sees it. Pick a combination that is not already used by another extension and that ChromeOS or Chrome does not reserve.

Chrome’s extension commands API is intentionally limited. Developers can expose commands for their own features, but users cannot create a command for an extension that does not define one. Even when a command exists, operating-system and Chrome shortcuts—including documented window-management examples—retain priority.

Website remappers have another boundary. They can alter shortcuts handled by a supported page, one site at a time, but page code can ignore or consume keyboard events in ways the extension cannot change. A site that works today may also expose different controls from another site. Browser-level commands for opening or closing tabs remain browser commands rather than website shortcuts.

Troubleshoot a remap that appears not to work

The remap option is missing

  • Confirm that you opened Device > Keyboard, not a general accessibility or language page.
  • Check whether you are looking under Built-in keyboard or External keyboard; the desired control may belong to the other category.
  • Use the keys and action labels actually displayed. ChromeOS does not promise an unrestricted key-to-key matrix.

The wrong keyboard changed

Return to the keyboard page with the intended device connected and configure that device’s category. A built-in assignment and an external-keyboard assignment are separate, so verify the result by disconnecting or reconnecting the keyboard you meant to change.

Caps Lock is not behaving as expected

Check whether Search or Launcher is assigned to Caps Lock, and test the key in a text field. If you did not want a persistent remap, use Alt+Search or Alt+Launcher instead. Restore defaults if another assignment is interfering.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

An extension shortcut is ignored

Try a different combination that is not used by ChromeOS or Chrome, then confirm the extension is enabled and that its command is available on the current page. An extension cannot override operating-system or browser shortcuts that take priority.

A website remap works nowhere

Test the site without assuming that every web app exposes the same keyboard events. Website-focused tools depend on the page’s implementation; some sites do not respond to remapped keys. Browser-level tab and window shortcuts remain outside the site tool’s scope.

Keep your configuration understandable

Change one setting at a time and write down the original behavior if you are adapting several keys. This makes it easier to identify whether a problem comes from ChromeOS, an extension command, or a particular website. Avoid assigning the same key combination to multiple extension commands, and avoid using a system shortcut as an extension trigger when ChromeOS already reserves it.

Remapping checklist

  • Identify whether the desired change is system-wide, extension-specific or limited to one website.
  • For ChromeOS behavior, open Settings > Device > Keyboard.
  • Choose Built-in keyboard or External keyboard for the device you are actually using.
  • Use Remap keyboard keys and select only an action offered in the list.
  • For occasional Caps Lock, try Alt+Search or Alt+Launcher instead of a persistent assignment.
  • For an extension’s own command, manage shortcuts at chrome://extensions/shortcuts.
  • For a web app’s internal shortcut, use a site-aware extension only if the site supports the remapped event.
  • Remember that Chrome and operating-system shortcuts cannot be overridden by extension commands.
  • Use Restore defaults to undo the main remapping, and review separate keyboard options independently.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I make Search the Caps Lock key on a Chromebook?

Open Settings, choose Device and Keyboard, select Remap keyboard keys under Built-in keyboard, then assign Search or Launcher to Caps Lock. Select Restore defaults on the same screen to undo it.

Can I toggle Caps Lock without permanently remapping Search?

Yes. Press Alt+Search or Alt+Launcher to toggle Caps Lock while leaving the normal Search or Launcher behavior intact.

Will a built-in keyboard remap change my USB keyboard too?

Not necessarily. ChromeOS has separate Built-in keyboard and External keyboard categories. Configure the category for the keyboard you are using.

Can an extension remap any Chromebook key everywhere?

No. Extension commands trigger features belonging to that extension, and website remappers affect supported pages. ChromeOS, Chrome and operating-system shortcuts can retain priority.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Where do I change an extension’s keyboard shortcut?

Open chrome://extensions/shortcuts, find the extension and edit the command field if that extension exposes a configurable command.

Why does a website remapping extension work on one site but not another?

These tools depend on each site’s keyboard implementation. Some sites do not respond to remapped keys, and browser commands such as opening or closing tabs are outside the site’s scope.

Can I remap Insert, Delete, Home or Page Down?

ChromeOS documentation describes these as separate keyboard options. Look under Settings > Device > Keyboard for the controls your Chromebook provides instead of assuming they are all in the main remapping picker.

How do I undo a key remap?

Return to Settings > Device > Keyboard > Remap keyboard keys and select Restore defaults. Reset separate modifier or navigation-key options independently if you changed them.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Start with ChromeOS Settings for supported system-level changes, including Search or Launcher as Caps Lock. Use chrome://extensions/shortcuts only for commands exposed by an extension, and use a website remapper only for supported page-level shortcuts. Built-in and external keyboards have separate settings, and reserved ChromeOS or Chrome shortcuts cannot be overridden.
