If you want remappable rear buttons and adjustable analog-stick response on a PS5, Sony’s documented workflow is for the DualSense Edge wireless controller. On the console, you create or edit an Edge custom profile, assign functions under Customize Button Assignments, and adjust each stick under Stick Sensitivity/Deadzone. The cited Sony setup does not establish equivalent built-in profile controls for the standard DualSense, so the menu path below should not be treated as a feature of every PS5 controller.
The settings are saved with the profile and can be reopened during a game with Fn + Options. The important choices are separate: rear-button assignments decide what a button does, while sensitivity curves and deadzones decide how analog-stick movement is translated into game input.

Which PS5 controller has these controls?
The DualSense Edge is the model covered by Sony’s PS5 profile documentation for both requested functions. It has detachable rear buttons, custom profiles, per-stick sensitivity and deadzone controls, and an in-game shortcut for opening the profile menu. The standard DualSense is a different controller. The cited setup does not establish that it has equivalent built-in custom-profile controls, so you should not expect to find the Edge menu on every PS5 controller.

- Ultra Customizable Controls
- Mappable Back Buttons
- DualSense Wireless Controller Features Built In
- Replaceable Stick Modules and Caps
What you need before changing a profile
- A DualSense Edge wireless controller connected to the PS5.
- Access to the PS5 Settings menu.
- A game in which you can safely test movement and button input.
- A clear idea of which action you want on each rear button. The profile changes the controller assignment; it does not automatically rewrite a game’s own control scheme.
Keep the controller’s physical layout in mind. The Edge uses detachable back buttons, and Sony’s personalization guidance also covers attaching back buttons and changing stick caps. Physical parts and software assignments are related but separate: installing a different cap does not itself change the sensitivity curve.
Create or edit a DualSense Edge custom profile
- From the PS5 home screen, open Settings.
- Choose Accessories.
- Select DualSense Edge Wireless Controller.
- Open Custom Profiles.
- Choose Create Custom Profile, name the profile, and select the setting you want to configure. If the profile already exists, select it and edit it instead.
Use separate profiles when the same physical button should perform different jobs in different games or play styles. A profile is the container for the button and stick choices; the controls described in the following sections are edited inside that profile.
How to remap the Edge rear buttons
Assign a function
- Open the profile through Settings > Accessories > DualSense Edge Wireless Controller > Custom Profiles.
- Select the profile you want to change.
- Choose Customize Button Assignments.
- Select the rear button you want to configure.
- Choose the function that button should perform.
- Select Apply.
Sony says the assignment is saved automatically when you return to the game. You do not need to create a separate save file for the remap, but you do need to leave the menu through the normal return-to-game flow so the profile change is committed.
Restrictions you cannot override
- The Fn button cannot be assigned to another function.
- Circle and Cross must always be assigned.
- A rear button changes which controller input is sent; it does not guarantee that every game will expose or accept every possible action.
If a game uses its own controller-remapping menu, check that menu as well. A conflict between the in-game settings and the Edge profile can make an assignment appear not to work even though the controller profile contains it.

How to tune stick sensitivity and deadzone
Open the stick controls
- Open the Edge profile from Settings > Accessories > DualSense Edge Wireless Controller > Custom Profiles.
- Select the profile to edit.
- Choose Stick Sensitivity/Deadzone.
- Select the left or right stick. They are configured separately.
- Change the stick’s sensitivity curve and deadzone.
- Use the Playtest view to inspect the input.
- Choose Back to Game to check the result in the game you intend to play.
Sony says these changes are automatically saved when you return to the game. Test the setting in the target game rather than assuming that a value that feels good in the profile screen will feel identical everywhere.
What deadzone means
Sony defines deadzone as “the range that you can tilt the stick before it’s recognized as an input.” For example, with a 10% deadzone, the stick must move more than 10% before the console registers movement. A larger deadzone therefore requires more physical travel before input begins; a smaller deadzone begins registering closer to the stick’s center.
That definition explains why deadzone is useful when tuning control feel. If a character or camera seems to respond to tiny movements, increasing the deadzone can prevent those small center-area movements from being treated as input. If movement does not begin until the stick is pushed a long way, a smaller deadzone may make the control start sooner. These are practical consequences of the input range, not a universal prescription from Sony. Change the value in small increments and test the result in the actual game.
What a sensitivity curve changes
The sensitivity curve describes the relationship between physical stick tilt and the input sent to the game. Sony explains that a gradual slope makes larger tilts produce smoother movement, while a steep slope makes small tilts produce faster movement. The Edge offers six curve types.

- Quick-swap control profiles Once you’ve found your ideal control settings, you can save them to unique profiles and swap between them on-the-fly, so your favourite configurations are always ready when you are.
Use that relationship to choose a starting direction:
- A gradual curve is a sensible place to begin when you want more controlled, smooth response as the stick moves farther from center.
- A steeper curve is worth testing when you want a small physical movement to produce a faster response.
- There is no single best curve for every player, game, stick, or camera task. The six choices are options, not a ranking.
Change one control at a time. For example, leave the curve alone while testing deadzone, then return the deadzone to a known value before comparing two curves. This isolates the effect you are feeling and makes it easier to undo a change that does not help.
Test settings without losing track of what changed
- Start with the profile that contains your current known-good assignments.
- Select only one stick, left or right, before making a change.
- Adjust either the deadzone or the curve, not both simultaneously.
- Inspect the input in Playtest.
- Choose Back to Game and test the same movement in the game.
- If the result is worse, return to the profile and reverse that one change.
This method matters because the left and right sticks often serve different purposes in a game, and because a curve change can make a movement feel faster without changing the deadzone. Keeping a short note of the old value or curve name also gives you a reliable fallback when experimenting.

The default profile assigned to Fn + Triangle cannot be changed. Treat that combination as a fixed default shortcut when planning your profile layout. The Fn button itself also remains reserved and cannot be remapped as an ordinary game action.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do not confuse stick deadzone with trigger controls
The Edge has trigger input settings as well as analog-stick settings. A trigger deadzone concerns the range of L2 or R2 travel before trigger input is recognized; it is separate from the deadzone for the left or right analog stick.
The controller also has L2/R2 stop sliders that shorten trigger travel. Sony’s manual describes short and medium stroke positions. When either stop is set to short or medium stroke, trigger effects are unavailable. That is an optional trigger-travel adjustment, not a faster or slower stick-sensitivity setting, and changing it will not alter the response of either analog stick.
Troubleshooting common problems
The rear button does nothing or performs the wrong action
- Reopen the active profile and verify the exact rear button selected under Customize Button Assignments.
- Confirm that you selected Apply and returned to the game so the profile could save.
- Check the game’s own controller settings for a conflicting assignment.
- Remember that Fn cannot be reassigned, and Circle and Cross must remain assigned.
The stick still feels unchanged
- Confirm that you edited the intended stick; left and right settings are separate.
- Check both the curve and deadzone, since they affect different parts of the response.
- Use Playtest, then choose Back to Game and test the same movement in the target game.
- Make one adjustment at a time so you can identify which setting produced the result.
The setting works in one game but not another
The Edge profile changes controller input, while a game may apply its own remapping or sensitivity options afterward. Compare the game’s controller settings with the Edge profile instead of assuming the controller failed. Keep the profile focused on the controller-level change and use the game’s menu for game-specific actions when the two systems overlap.

I cannot find the menu shown here
Verify that the connected controller is a DualSense Edge and that you are looking under Accessories > DualSense Edge Wireless Controller. The cited workflow is Edge-specific; it is not evidence that the same menu exists for the standard DualSense. Sony can change interface labels in future PS5 system software, so a slightly different label does not necessarily indicate a hardware fault.
A practical setup strategy
For rear-button remapping
Assign a rear button to an action you want to reach without removing your thumb from a stick. Start with one assignment, test it in the game, and add another only after the first feels natural. This keeps muscle-memory changes manageable and makes it clear whether an unexpected input came from the new rear assignment or from the game’s original layout.
For stick tuning
Begin with the curve that most closely matches the response you want, then tune deadzone separately. If center movement is being recognized too readily, test a modestly larger deadzone; if the stick feels inactive near center, test a smaller one. If the first part of the stick travel feels too slow, compare a steeper curve; if it feels too abrupt, compare a more gradual curve. Always verify the change in the game where it matters.

For multiple games
Create a named profile for each distinct control arrangement rather than continually overwriting one profile. Use the in-game Fn + Options shortcut to reopen the menu, and configure profile shortcuts when you want faster switching. Keep the unchangeable Fn + Triangle default in mind when choosing your shortcut plan.
What the Edge settings can—and cannot—promise
The Edge gives you a console-level way to assign rear-button functions and shape stick input through curves and deadzones. It does not provide one universally correct sensitivity value, and Sony’s six curve types are not presented as a best-to-worst list. Your game’s own controller options can also interact with the profile, so a successful setup requires checking both layers when an input behaves unexpectedly.
For the specific goal of remapping back buttons and tuning stick sensitivity on a PS5, the decisive model distinction is simple: use the DualSense Edge workflow, edit the relevant custom profile, test one change at a time, and keep stick, trigger, and in-game settings separate.
