To collect royalties, you may also need to work with a collective management organization (CMO) whose current KECOBO licence covers the specific right and use involved. Registration records ownership; it does not by itself guarantee that a song will be monitored, generate royalties, or be paid.
What the National Rights Registry does—and what it does not do
KECOBO’s National Rights Registry is a central repository for copyright ownership details. Its portal lists music among the work types and says rights holders can register works and view or download certificates. It supports individual and corporate accounts.

That makes the NRR useful for creating a record of a work and its ownership information. It is not the same thing as joining a CMO, licensing a use, reporting every use of a song, or receiving a royalty. A certificate is evidence of the details recorded in the registry; it should not be treated as a payment guarantee or a substitute for contributor agreements and other records.
Registry, regulator, and CMO: three different roles
| System or organization | What it does | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| KECOBO | Kenya’s copyright regulator. Its eCitizen services page describes its functions as public awareness, enforcement, copyright registration, licensing CMOs, and copyright and related-rights education. | Current notices and licensing information, especially before relying on a CMO to collect for a particular right. |
| National Rights Registry | KECOBO’s repository for registering works and ownership details, including music. | Live application instructions, fees, evidence requirements, and the details shown on your registration certificate. |
| Collective management organization | Administers rights and collects and distributes royalties within the scope of its appointment or current licence. | Its current KECOBO licence, covered right and uses, repertoire rules, statements, payment process, and correction or dispute options. |
KECOBO’s FAQ search-result extract describes an intended system for recording works, participants, and share ratios, monitoring usage, distributing royalties received, issuing beneficiary statements, and managing tax deductions. That description explains the system’s stated design; it does not establish that every function is currently operating or that every registered work will produce a payment.

How to register a song or recording
- Open the official NRR portal. Choose the individual or corporate account route that fits you, then follow the live application flow. KECOBO says its services are accessible online through eCitizen. Do not rely on an old checklist for documents, fees, processing times, or required fields; confirm those in the current application.
- Identify the work and its contributors accurately. Keep the title consistent across your registration, release metadata, agreements, and royalty records. Record the relevant contributors and agreed ownership shares, and make sure everyone involved has confirmed them.
- Keep supporting records together. Save contributor agreements, split confirmations, release or recording details, and any other evidence supporting the ownership information you enter. These are practical record-keeping measures, not a claim that the portal requires each item.
- Review the details before submission. Check names, titles, roles, and shares carefully. An incorrect or incomplete ownership record can make it harder to resolve a later claim, even if the work itself has been registered.
- Save the certificate and submission records. The portal says rights holders can view or download certificates. Keep a copy with agreements, registrations, royalty statements, and payment records so you can refer to consistent information when dealing with a CMO or a user of the work.
How to collect music royalties in Kenya
First identify the right and use for which money may be due. A song’s underlying composition and a particular sound recording are not interchangeable assets, and a CMO’s authority may cover one category or use without covering every other one. Then check whether a currently licensed organization administers that right for the relevant use and whether your work is in the repertoire it handles.
- Define the claim. Note the work or recording, the contributor or rights holder making the claim, and the type of use at issue. Keep the relevant ownership shares and agreements at hand.
- Check KECOBO’s latest CMO licensing notice or register. Confirm the organization’s current licence and its stated scope for the right and use you are asking about. A CMO’s website or a past licence announcement is not sufficient proof of current authority.
- Ask the CMO how to register or claim the repertoire. Confirm its current membership, work-submission, usage-reporting, statement, and payment procedures directly. The available information here does not establish current payout schedules or dispute channels.
- Keep an audit trail. Save submissions, acknowledgement messages, statements, corrections, and payment records. If a work or share is missing or incorrect, ask the relevant organization what correction or dispute process currently applies.
Which CMO collects royalties in Kenya?
There is no safe one-name answer for every creator, right, and use. The relevant organization depends on the current KECOBO licence and the right or category of use covered by that licence. Check the latest official KECOBO licensing information before joining, submitting a claim, or directing a user to pay a particular organization.

The dates matter. Kenya Broadcasting Corporation reported on October 21, 2025 that KECOBO had renewed PAVRISK’s licence and that KAMP Copyright and Related Rights Ltd was licensed to manage sound-recording-producer royalties for a one-year term effective November 5, 2025. That report is useful historical context, but it does not establish the organizations’ status or scope on October 7, 2026. Check the current KECOBO register or notice for any later decision.

PAVRISK describes its own music-rights service as granting permissions, collecting royalties, and enforcing rights on behalf of members, and says it targets users including online digital platforms. Treat that as PAVRISK’s description of its service, not independent confirmation of a current KECOBO mandate or of coverage for a particular use. Similarly, MCSK’s continuing public website does not establish a current CMO licence: KECOBO’s 2021 deregistration release is historical, and later licensing decisions may supersede it.

- Track where and when a work or recording was released, and retain available usage or distribution reports.
- File royalty statements, claim correspondence, corrections, and payment records by work and reporting period.
- When details conflict, resolve ownership with the contributors and correct the records with the relevant registry or organization rather than submitting inconsistent versions.
What to verify before you rely on a registration or royalty claim
- For an NRR application: check the live portal for current document requirements, fields, fees, and processing information; those details are not established here.
- For a CMO: check KECOBO’s latest licence notice, the licence term, and the right and use within its scope.
- For a payment: confirm current claim, statement, correction, and payment procedures directly with the organization administering the relevant right.
- For shared works: make sure ownership shares and contributor identities agree across your agreements, registrations, and CMO records.
