How to register for GST in India: documents, steps and deadlines

To register for GST in India, apply online on the GST Portal through Form GST REG-01. You first create a temporary reference number (TRN) with your PAN, email and mobile number, then complete Part B with business, signatory, premises and goods-or-services details, upload the evidence requested for your case, complete Aadhaar authentication when prompted, and submit the application. A person who becomes liable generally has 30 days to apply; a casual or non-resident taxable person must apply at least five days before starting business.

Turnover alone does not decide liability. The applicable state, type and location of supplies, compulsory-registration provisions, exemptions and current notifications all matter. The ₹20 lakh general threshold and ₹10 lakh special-category-state threshold shown in the cited CGST Act text are useful starting points, not a universal eligibility test. Check current CBIC law, notifications and the portal’s questions before relying on a threshold.

How do I register for GST in India?

GST registration is an online application to obtain a GSTIN (Goods and Services Tax Identification Number). The normal route is Form GST REG-01 on the GST Portal. Part A captures basic identity and contact information; Part B collects the constitution of the business, people responsible for it, business premises, goods or services and verification details.

Registration is not automatically required merely because a business has a PAN or sells something online. First determine whether the business makes taxable supplies, where those supplies are made, its aggregate turnover for the relevant financial year, and whether a compulsory-registration category or an exemption applies. The GST Portal form is designed to collect those facts, but it does not replace a current legal analysis for unusual situations.

Turnover thresholds are only one route to liability

Section 22(1) of the Government of India’s CGST Act, 2017, as displayed in the cited text, gives a general aggregate-turnover threshold of more than ₹20 lakh in a financial year and a ₹10 lakh threshold in the special-category states covered by its proviso. “Aggregate turnover” and the special-category list must be applied under the law in force for the relevant period.

Section 24 separately identifies persons who must register, subject to the applicable law and exemptions. That means a business can have a turnover below a headline threshold and still need registration, while another business may fall within an exemption. Consider the supply type, state and registration category together rather than using a calculator based only on annual sales.

Voluntary registration

A person who is not otherwise liable may choose voluntary registration. Once registered, the registration provisions and the related compliance obligations apply to that person. Voluntary registration can therefore be useful only after considering the ongoing filing and record-keeping consequences, not just the ability to charge or claim GST.

What documents are required for GST registration?

There is no single fixed document bundle for every applicant. The portal changes its evidence requests according to the business constitution, the authorised signatory, the premises’ possession basis and other answers in REG-01. Prepare the categories below, then upload the specific files the portal asks for.

Identity, PAN and contact information

  • PAN of the applicant or entity (or the proprietor where applicable), with the legal name matching the PAN record.
  • State and district in which registration is sought.
  • A working mobile number in India and email address for the primary authorised signatory. You must be able to receive separate OTPs on both channels.
  • Basic identity details for the proprietor, partners, directors, promoters or other stakeholders required by the constitution of the business.

Constitution and authorised-signatory evidence

  • Information identifying the constitution of the business, such as proprietorship, partnership, company or another applicable form.
  • Details of the primary authorised signatory. The portal guide requires a primary authorised signatory for the application.
  • Evidence of appointment or authority to act where the portal requests it, together with the signatory’s identity information.

Business-premises records

  • Complete address and contact details for the principal place of business.
  • Details for each additional place of business, if any.
  • Evidence supporting the declared possession or occupancy of each premises. The acceptable evidence depends on whether the premises are owned, rented, leased or held on another basis; select the matching category shown by the portal.

Business activity and Aadhaar access

  • Goods and services details and any state-specific information that appears for the application.
  • Access to the mobile number or other contact channel linked to Aadhaar if OTP authentication is offered.
  • Availability for biometric and document verification at a designated GST Suvidha Kendra if the portal routes the application that way.

The GST Portal guide describes bank-account information as optional in the initial application flow, with bank details added after grant through a non-core amendment. Follow the current on-screen requirement: do not treat bank details as a prerequisite to submit REG-01 unless the portal specifically requires them for your case.

GST registration steps on the portal

1. Start a new registration

  1. Open the GST Portal and select Services > Registration > New Registration.
  2. Choose the taxpayer option, state and district.
  3. Enter the PAN-based legal name and PAN.
  4. Enter the primary authorised signatory’s email address and Indian mobile number, then submit the initial details.

Use a signatory’s contact details that will remain available throughout the application. Changing access midway can make OTP and notice handling difficult.

2. Verify the initial OTPs and save the TRN

The portal sends separate OTPs to the email and mobile number. Verify both. It then generates a temporary reference number (TRN). Record the TRN and retain the exact email and mobile details used; you need them to reopen the application.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Reopen the saved Part B application

  1. Return to Services > Registration > New Registration and select the TRN option.
  2. Enter the TRN and complete the requested OTP verification.
  3. Open the saved Part B application and continue filling the tabs.

A TRN is not a submitted application. The portal guide states that an unsubmitted TRN and saved application are purged after 15 days if Part B is not submitted, so download or retain working records and finish within that window.

4. Complete every applicable tab

The normal-taxpayer guide lists these sections:

  1. Business Details — legal and trade names, constitution, state and the other core business particulars requested.
  2. Promoter/Partners — people connected with the business according to its constitution.
  3. Authorised Signatory — the primary signatory and any additional signatories, with authority information where requested.
  4. Principal Place of Business — address, contact details and possession or occupancy evidence.
  5. Additional Places of Business — repeat the premises information for each additional location, if applicable.
  6. Goods and Services — identify the goods or services covered by the business.
  7. State Specific Information — complete fields that appear for the selected state or business circumstances.
  8. Aadhaar Authentication — choose and complete the route offered to the applicant.
  9. Verification — declarations and final submission.

Save each section as you go. A required field or an inconsistent PAN, legal name, address or signatory record can prevent submission or trigger a clarification request.

5. Upload the evidence requested for your case

Upload the files shown for the business constitution, signatory and premises. If several premises records must be combined, follow the portal’s file-combination and size instructions rather than uploading an unrelated document under the wrong category. The possession option selected for an address should match the evidence supplied.

6. Complete Aadhaar authentication when prompted

The portal can offer OTP-based Aadhaar authentication or route an applicant to biometric and document verification at a designated GST Suvidha Kendra. Complete the requested action promptly. The GST Portal’s Aadhaar FAQ says verification should be completed within 15 days. A failed, incomplete or unverified route can change how the application is processed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

7. Verify and submit

Use a permitted signing method offered by the portal, such as a Digital Signature Certificate (DSC) or Electronic Verification Code (EVC) where supported for your applicant type. Submit only after all declarations are correct. After successful submission and authentication, retain the Application Reference Number (ARN) acknowledgement and monitor the portal, email and SMS for status changes, notices or requests for clarification.

8. Download and check the certificate

When the application is approved, download the registration certificate and GSTIN from the taxpayer portal. Check the registered legal name, GSTIN and principal or additional business-place details immediately. If a field is wrong, use the applicable amendment route or obtain professional help rather than issuing invoices with incorrect particulars.

What is the deadline to apply for GST registration?

Situation Time limit Effect or action
Person who becomes ordinarily liable to register Within 30 days from the date liability arises Apply through REG-01 within the statutory period.
Casual taxable person or non-resident taxable person At least five days before commencing business Apply before starting; the Act also provides for advance deposit of estimated tax liability for these categories.
Saved TRN/Part B draft 15 days The GST Portal guide says an unsubmitted draft is purged after this period.
Aadhaar authentication request 15 days, according to the GST Portal FAQ Complete OTP or the routed biometric/document process promptly.

Effective date when an ordinary application is late

For a normal taxpayer who applies within 30 days, registration generally takes effect from the date the liability arose. When the application is filed after that period, the effective date is generally the date registration is granted. The exact result depends on the category and law applicable to the facts, so keep evidence of when liability began and do not assume a late application receives the earlier date.

How many days does GST registration take?

There is no single guaranteed approval time. Processing depends on whether the application and documents are complete, which Aadhaar route is used, whether risk-based verification is triggered and whether an officer issues a notice.

The GST Portal Aadhaar FAQ describes different no-action outcomes:

  • For an ordinary application that follows the standard route, it may be deemed approved after seven working days if no action is taken.
  • For failed or unverified Aadhaar cases, the application is not deemed approved through that seven-working-day route. If the officer takes no action, the FAQ describes a possible deemed-approval point after 30 calendar days.

These are conditional administrative outcomes, not a promise that every application will be approved on day seven or day 30. A notice, a request for clarification, a biometric appointment or the actual status displayed for your ARN controls what you must do next. Respond within the time shown in the notice and keep copies of submissions.

Ordinary, casual and non-resident applications: which route fits?

Question Ordinary taxpayer Casual or non-resident taxable person
When to apply Within 30 days after liability arises At least five days before commencing business
Effective-date rule described for late filing Within-time filing generally links the effective date to liability; a late filing generally links it to grant Category-specific rules and the advance-tax-deposit requirement apply
Extra planning point Maintain evidence of the date liability arose Plan the application and estimated tax deposit before the first supply

Do not select a category simply because it appears faster or more convenient. Your actual business pattern and the statutory definition determine the route.

Common problems and how to avoid them

Using turnover as the only test

The ₹20 lakh and ₹10 lakh figures are not a universal answer. Check compulsory-registration provisions, exemptions, state and supply details, and the current notifications before deciding that registration is unnecessary.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Leaving the draft until the TRN expires

Because the guide gives a 15-day purge period for an unsubmitted draft, collect premises evidence and signatory information before starting Part B. If the TRN expires, begin a new application rather than assuming the old draft remains available.

Inconsistent names or addresses

The PAN legal name, constitution details, signatory information and premises evidence should tell the same story. Mismatches can lead to a clarification request or delay. Correct the source records or explain the difference with the evidence requested by the portal.

Ignoring the Aadhaar request

An OTP invitation, biometric appointment or document-verification instruction is part of the processing path. Complete it within the stated window and monitor the application rather than waiting for automatic approval.

Treating an ARN as the certificate

An ARN acknowledges submission; it is not the GST registration certificate. Use the GSTIN and certificate only after approval and verify the downloaded details.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What to do after approval

  • Download and securely store the registration certificate and GSTIN details.
  • Check the legal name, registration type and all business-place details against the application.
  • Use the GSTIN consistently on invoices, records and other documents that require it.
  • Add bank-account information through the applicable non-core amendment process if it was not provided initially and the portal requires it after grant.
  • Set a process for monitoring portal notices, filing obligations and changes to signatories, premises or business activities.

Registration is the start of GST compliance, not the end. Filing, invoicing, payment and amendment duties depend on the taxpayer’s category and the law in force.

A practical pre-submission checklist

  • Eligibility checked against turnover, supply type, state, compulsory-registration rules and exemptions.
  • PAN and legal name match.
  • Primary authorised signatory has reliable email, Indian mobile access and authority to act.
  • Constitution, promoter or partner details are ready.
  • Principal and additional premises addresses are complete.
  • Possession or occupancy evidence matches each premises category selected.
  • Goods, services and state-specific fields are accurate.
  • Aadhaar OTP or biometric/document-verification availability is arranged.
  • All requested files are uploaded in the format and combination the portal accepts.
  • TRN deadline is being tracked and the final submission will occur within 15 days of draft creation.
  • ARN is saved after submission and portal, email and SMS notifications will be monitored.

The CGST Act page used for the threshold and deadline wording is the enacted 2017 text, and displayed wording may not incorporate every later amendment or notification. For an unusual supply pattern, a special state situation, a compulsory-registration question or a late application, verify the current law and CBIC guidance or consult a qualified GST professional before filing.
