First establish whether your business is liable under the applicable GST rules, then submit Part A and Part B of Form GST REG-01, complete the portal’s OTP or Aadhaar verification, and follow any review instructions. A GSTIN is issued through this registration process; it is not a physical document or product you purchase.
What a GSTIN is and what registration does
A GSTIN is the unique 15-digit identifier assigned to a taxpayer after GST registration. The identifier confirms that the applicant has been registered in the GST system; it does not, by itself, complete later invoicing, return-filing, payment or record-keeping duties.

Registration is filed online through the government GST Portal. The exact legal requirement depends on facts such as the state or union territory (UT), aggregate turnover on the same PAN, the type and location of supplies, the business constitution and whether a compulsory-registration category applies.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsCheck whether you must register before applying
Do not rely on one universal turnover figure. The Central Goods and Services Tax (CGST) Act and related rules create a threshold framework, exemptions and compulsory-registration categories, and notifications can change how the framework applies. CBIC’s official guidance describes aggregate turnover across India on a PAN basis and notes exceptions.

| Question | Why it affects registration | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| What is the aggregate turnover on the PAN? | The general threshold is considered across India for entities using that PAN, not by looking at one branch or one state in isolation. | Use the current CBIC threshold guidance and the applicable notification for the relevant period. |
| Where is the business liable? | Section 25 requires an application in every state or UT where the person is liable to be registered. | Identify each state or UT in which the liability arises and whether separate registrations are required. |
| What supplies are made? | Goods, services and mixed supplies can be treated differently. Supply location and sales channel can also affect the analysis. | Check the CGST Act, rules and current notifications for the actual supply pattern. |
| Does a compulsory-registration category apply? | Section 24 lists categories that can require registration even when the ordinary threshold analysis would not produce the same result. | Match the business activities and applicant status to section 24 and current CBIC explanations. |
| Is the business covered by an exclusion or increased threshold? | Section 23 covers persons not liable in specified circumstances, and notifications may provide an increased threshold for certain suppliers engaged exclusively in goods, subject to conditions and limitations. | Confirm that every condition is met; do not assume an increased threshold applies to a mixed or different business. |
Use the CGST Act, Chapter VI, the CBIC registration FAQ and the CBIC Sectoral FAQs for the current framework. If the facts involve several states, unusual supply arrangements or a disputed liability date, obtain advice from a qualified GST professional rather than treating a general threshold summary as a determination.
The statutory application window
Under section 25(1), a person liable under section 22 or section 24 generally applies in each liable state or UT within 30 days from the date the person becomes liable, subject to the prescribed manner and conditions. That is a statutory filing deadline, not an estimate of how quickly the portal will approve an application. Applicant categories can have different rules about when liability begins, so establish the trigger date for the specific case.
Information and files to prepare
Gather the following before opening the form. Preparing accurate information first reduces the chance of a mismatch or an avoidable request during review.
- PAN: the PAN that belongs to the applicant and the legal name recorded against it.
- Constitution details: information about the business, promoters or partners and the person authorised to sign the application.
- Contact details: an email address and an Indian mobile number for the primary authorised signatory. Both must be available for OTP verification.
- Addresses: the principal place of business and any additional places that must be declared.
- Supply information: the goods and services the business supplies, using the fields presented by the portal.
- State-specific information: details requested for the selected state or UT and the applicant’s circumstances.
- Supporting uploads: documents requested by the form for the business constitution, appointment of the authorised signatory and places of business. The GST Portal manual gives proof of appointment and the authorised signatory’s photograph as examples in relevant fields.
There is no single document bundle that fits every company, partnership, proprietorship, trust, premises arrangement or signatory situation. Use the fields and upload instructions displayed for the applicant. Where the manual instructs an applicant to provide multiple documents for a place of business in one file, combine them as directed instead of uploading an unrequested series of separate files.

Apply on the GST Portal: step-by-step
- Open the registration service. Go to gst.gov.in and choose Services > Registration > New Registration. The home page may also show a Register Now option.
- Choose the taxpayer profile in Part A. Select the taxpayer type, state or UT and district. Enter the legal name exactly as recorded against the PAN. Select or identify the primary authorised signatory and enter that person’s email address and Indian mobile number.
- Complete contact verification. The portal sends OTPs to the submitted email and mobile number. Finish both validations using the codes supplied by the portal.
- Save the Temporary Reference Number (TRN). After Part A validation, the portal generates a TRN. Record it securely. You use the TRN to return to the saved application and continue Part B; losing it can make resuming the draft unnecessarily difficult.
- Open and complete Part B of Form GST REG-01. Enter the fields that apply to the applicant’s constitution and activities. The GST Portal manual identifies sections for business details, promoters or partners, the authorised signatory, an authorised representative, the principal and additional places of business, goods and services, state-specific information, Aadhaar authentication and verification.
- Enter place-of-business details carefully. Declare the principal place and any additional places requested by the form. Upload the evidence required for the relevant premises arrangement, following the portal’s file-combination instructions where applicable.
- Provide signatory and representative information. Complete the authorised-signatory fields and upload the applicable proof of appointment and photograph. If an authorised representative is used, fill that section as applicable rather than leaving an inconsistent or incomplete record.
- Describe the goods and services. Select the goods and services requested by the form and complete any state-specific fields. Use the business’s actual activities; the registration record should be consistent with the liability analysis and supporting documents.
- Choose the Aadhaar-authentication option shown for the application. The available next step can be an OTP link or, after risk-based checks, a link to book biometric verification at a designated GST Suvidha Kendra (GSK). The alternatives are explained below.
- Complete verification and submit. Review the declaration, complete the portal verification and submit Part B. After submission, follow the exact authentication, document-verification or other instructions sent by the portal. The official instructions do not establish one universal current approval time, so do not treat a published informal estimate as a guarantee.
Aadhaar authentication: which route you may see
Aadhaar authentication is part of the new-registration flow for applicable taxpayers and persons. The portal determines the next action using the information in the application and applicable risk-based checks.
| Choice or result | What happens | Action required |
|---|---|---|
| Select Yes and receive an OTP link | The portal provides a link for Aadhaar details and OTP-based authentication. | Open the link and finish the Aadhaar OTP process within the validity period stated in the portal communication. |
| Select Yes and receive a biometric link | The portal directs the applicant to book a biometric-verification slot at a designated GSK. | Book and attend the designated-centre appointment, completing the photo or biometric and document checks requested. |
| Select No | The Aadhaar FAQ says photo capture and document verification at a designated GSK are required. | Follow the centre instructions and attend with the documents and people specified for the application. |
The GST Portal’s Aadhaar Authentication FAQ describes a 15-day validity period for completing the Aadhaar details after Part B submission. Treat the link or email sent for your application as controlling: it contains the applicable deadline and route. If the link expires or the portal directs you to a centre, use the instructions in that communication rather than attempting to substitute a different verification method.
Read the GSTN Aadhaar Authentication FAQ and the GSTN registration manual for the current screens and conditions.

What happens after submission
Submission starts the portal’s authentication and review process. Depending on the application, the next instruction may concern Aadhaar OTP, biometric verification, a designated-centre visit or document review. Check the email and mobile number used in Part A and respond to the instructions associated with the application.

Because review conditions and applicant circumstances differ, the official manuals do not promise one processing time for every registration. Avoid planning a business launch around an assumed number of hours or days. The legally important timing before submission is the 30-day application window for a person who has become liable, while the grant itself depends on completion of the prescribed process.
After the GSTIN is granted
Add the bank account when the portal prompts you
The initial registration application does not require bank details in every case. The GST Portal manual says bank-account information is optional at the initial stage. After the GSTIN is granted, the portal prompts the taxpayer to provide bank details through a non-core amendment. Follow that prompt and complete the update in the manner shown for the account.
The GSTN Non-Core Fields manual explains the registration-detail update process. Portal labels can change, so use the current path and fields displayed after login.

CBIC describes the GSTIN as a unique 15-digit identifier for the registered taxpayer. A GSTIN is an identification number, not evidence that all post-registration compliance has been completed.

Plan for obligations beyond registration
Obtaining the number does not automatically complete invoicing, return filing, tax payment or other obligations that may apply to the registered person. Those duties depend on the taxpayer’s supplies, registration type, filing frequency and current rules. Once registration is granted, review the applicable compliance calendar and the instructions associated with the registered account.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Common errors and how to avoid them
Using a personal or trading name that does not match PAN records
Part A asks for the legal name as recorded against PAN. A mismatch between the entered name and PAN-linked record can create avoidable verification problems. Use the legal name shown in the PAN record, while providing the business or trade details in the fields intended for them.
Treating a turnover threshold as universal
Threshold treatment varies with state or UT, goods and services, supply pattern, compulsory-registration categories and notifications. A business that appears below a general threshold may still need to examine section 24 or another applicable rule; a business seeking an increased goods threshold must satisfy its conditions and limitations.
Applying in only one state when liability exists in several
Section 25 refers to registration in every state or UT in which the person is liable. Map the actual places and supplies before submission so that the application strategy reflects the geographic scope of the liability.
Best Value
Uploading an incomplete premises file
The portal’s fields can require evidence for the principal or additional place of business. In situations where multiple papers are needed, the manual may require them to be combined into one file. Follow the upload instruction visible for that field instead of guessing at a universal file list.
Ignoring the Aadhaar link or centre appointment
Choosing Aadhaar authentication does not always mean an immediate OTP. Risk-based checks can produce a biometric appointment link, and selecting No requires designated-centre photo capture and document verification. Check the email and link promptly; the FAQ describes a 15-day validity period after Part B submission.
Assuming bank details must be entered before submission
Bank information is optional in the initial application according to the registration manual. Provide it when the post-grant non-core amendment prompt appears, rather than delaying a correctly completed application because the bank section is not present at the first stage.
Expecting a guaranteed approval time
The official instructions describe the required authentication and review steps but do not set one universal current processing time. Keep the TRN and submission records, monitor the registered contact details and complete any additional instruction instead of relying on an unofficial turnaround promise.
Quick Recap
A practical pre-submission checklist
- Confirm the state or UT, supply type, aggregate turnover on the PAN and any compulsory-registration category.
- Identify the date on which the applicant became liable, if section 22 or 24 applies, and check the 30-day statutory window.
- Have the PAN-linked legal name, taxpayer type, district, authorised-signatory email and Indian mobile number ready.
- Collect promoter or partner, authorised-signatory, representative and place-of-business details relevant to the constitution.
- Prepare the applicable appointment proof, photograph and premises documents in the file format and combination required by the portal.
- Save the TRN immediately after Part A OTP validation.
- Complete every applicable Part B section, including goods and services, state-specific information and verification.
- Watch for the Aadhaar OTP or biometric link, or the designated-GSK instructions if Aadhaar authentication is not chosen.
- After grant, complete the bank-detail update when the portal prompts you through the non-core amendment process.
