How to register and manage an ENS .eth domain

To register an ENS name, use the current ENS Manager or another trusted ENS-compatible interface, complete its commit–reveal process, wait at least 60 seconds between the commitment and reveal, and then confirm the registration transaction. Managing a name means treating four separate functions correctly: the registrar controls registration and expiry, the registry records ownership and resolver settings, the resolver supplies addresses and other records, and reverse records connect an address back to a primary name.

First identify whether your name follows the ENSv1 or ENSv2 path. Registration, payment, permissions, migration, and expiry grace periods differ between them. Check the name’s live status, quote, network, and migration state immediately before signing any transaction.

What an ENS .eth name actually controls

ENS converts a human-readable name such as alice.eth into machine-readable identifiers that wallets, applications, and other services can retrieve. A name is not a conventional domain hosted on a web server; its important changes are blockchain transactions governed by ENS contracts.

  • Registrar: allocates a name under .eth, records its registration period, and applies the current pricing and renewal rules.
  • Registry: stores the owner, resolver, and time-to-live (TTL) information for each name.
  • Owner: has the permissions allowed by the applicable ENS version and contract setup. Owner actions can include changing a resolver, transferring the name, or managing subdomains.
  • Resolver: answers queries for the name, commonly returning an address and potentially other records supported by that resolver.
  • Reverse record: associates a wallet address with a name. This is the reverse direction of resolution and is required, along with matching forward resolution, for a valid primary name.

Because these components are separate, changing an address record does not transfer ownership, and transferring ownership does not automatically change the address returned by the resolver.

Before you register or change anything

Use a wallet you control

You need a wallet able to sign transactions on the network shown by the ENS interface. Keep the recovery material for that wallet offline and never paste a seed phrase or private key into a website, chat, form, or support request. A name is controlled by the address recorded as owner; losing control of that address can mean losing the ability to manage the name.

Determine the ENS version and migration state

ENSv1 and ENSv2 use different registrar and registry architectures. A name may be newly registered in the current system, migrated from v1, or still subject to v1 reservation rules. The interface should identify the supported path for the name. Do not assume that a v1 instruction, grace period, payment method, or permission model applies to a v2 name.

Check the transaction context

  • Confirm the exact spelling of the label (the part before .eth).
  • Confirm the connected wallet and destination contracts displayed for each transaction.
  • Check the selected network; a primary name and some records are chain-specific.
  • Review the live availability result, registration duration, amount due, and estimated network fee immediately before signing.

Registrar prices, accepted payment tokens, frontend labels, deployments, and migration support can change. The current ENS Manager is the authority for the quote and available actions at the time you transact.

How to register a new .eth name

ENS registration uses commit–reveal to make front-running more difficult. You first commit a hash of the intended registration details, wait for the minimum commitment period, and then reveal those details in a second transaction.

1. Search for the label

Open the current ENS-compatible manager, connect your wallet, and search for the exact label. A result that looks available is only a live status at that moment; another account can complete a registration before your reveal if you do not finish the process. Select the duration you want and inspect the quote shown for that name and period.

2. Prepare the registration parameters

The commitment represents the label, owner address, registration duration, a secret value, and the resolver and record configuration used by the flow. Check every field before submitting. The owner address should normally be the wallet or account that must control the name, not an address copied from an unrelated transaction.

3. Submit the commitment

Approve the first on-chain transaction. It records a commitment hash rather than exposing the complete registration details. Save the transaction hash and keep the secret available for the reveal step. If the wallet changes, the interface is refreshed, or the secret is lost, the commitment may not be usable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Wait at least 60 seconds

Both the ENSv1 registrar documentation and ENSv2 documentation specify a minimum 60-second commitment period. Waiting longer is acceptable; attempting to reveal earlier can fail. Use the manager’s countdown or on-chain status rather than relying on the time shown by your computer alone.

5. Reveal and register

After the minimum period, return to the same registration flow and submit the reveal transaction. ENS checks that the revealed label, owner, duration, secret, resolver, and record configuration match the commitment. ENSv1 documentation describes a controller flow paid in ETH. ENSv2 documentation describes a newer registrar with USD-denominated pricing, accepted payment tokens, and payment-token approval requirements. The manager will show which route applies; do not approve a token or amount that is not part of the current transaction.

6. Verify the completed name

Wait for confirmation and then look up the name again. Confirm the owner address, expiry date, resolver, and address record. If you configured records during registration, query the name from the manager and, where possible, from an independent ENS-compatible wallet or application. Registration fees and network transaction fees are separate: the former pays for the name’s registration period, while the latter pays the blockchain for processing each transaction.

ENSv1 and ENSv2: the differences that affect users

Area ENSv1 path ENSv2 path
Registrar and registry Established registrar/controller and registry arrangements. New registrar and a permissioned registry with role-based access.
Registration payment Documentation describes a controller flow paid in ETH. Documentation describes USD-denominated pricing, supported payment tokens, and possible token-approval steps; the live manager determines the available option.
Commitment wait At least 60 seconds. At least 60 seconds.
Expiry grace period Documentation describes 90 days. Documentation describes 28 days.
Migration and renewal Names can be affected by the v1-to-v2 transition and reservation status. Migrated names and names still reserved in v1 have specific handling; v1 registration and renewal are disabled once the v2 transition rules apply.
Permissions Follow the established owner, registrar, and resolver permissions. Follow the roles and permissions exposed for the permissioned registry.

The grace-period figures are version-specific documentation, not a universal ENS rule. For a particular name, inspect its migration and registration status before relying on either number.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Renewing a .eth name

Renewal extends a name’s expiry; it does not transfer ownership or change the owner’s permissions. ENS documentation explicitly states: “Any user can renew a domain, not just the owner.” A friend, organization, or service can therefore submit a valid renewal transaction for your name, but that transaction does not give the payer control of it.

Renew before expiry

  1. Look up the name in the current manager and record its owner, expiry, ENS version, and migration status.
  2. Select the renewal duration and review the live amount due and network.
  3. Submit the renewal transaction using the payment method offered for that name’s registrar path.
  4. After confirmation, check that the expiry moved forward while the owner and resolver remained unchanged.

Do not reuse an old quote. Rent pricing and payment requirements are determined at the time of the renewal transaction.

Understand expiry and grace periods

When the registration period ends, the name enters the handling defined by its registrar and migration state. ENSv1 documentation describes a 90-day grace period, while ENSv2 documentation describes 28 days. A name’s actual treatment depends on whether it has migrated, remains reserved in v1, or is managed entirely by the v2 path. During a grace period, renewal may still be possible, but waiting can expose the name to additional restrictions or availability risk. Check the current status rather than assuming that one buffer applies to every .eth name.

If the name has expired

Search for the name in the manager and read the status shown for that exact name. If renewal is offered, verify the owner and expiry after confirmation. If the interface indicates that the name is no longer protected or can be registered, do not assume the previous owner will retain it; follow the current registrar’s stated process. A transfer, resolver change, or primary-name setting cannot substitute for an expired registration.

Updating the resolver and records

The resolver is the contract or configuration that answers queries for a name. The registry stores which resolver is assigned, while the resolver stores the address and other records applications read. These are distinct operations.

Change the resolver

  1. Open the name-management view and select the resolver setting, not the address-record editor.
  2. Review the resolver address or contract selected by the interface and confirm that it supports the records you need.
  3. Submit the owner-authorized transaction and wait for confirmation.
  4. Recheck the name’s records after the resolver change; records from the previous resolver may not appear through the new one unless you recreate them.

Exact controls and permissions differ between ENSv1 and ENSv2. A v2 permissioned registry may expose role-based actions rather than the v1 owner flow.

Change an address or other record

  1. Choose the record editor for the correct name and network.
  2. Enter the destination address or other supported value carefully; compare it character by character with the intended destination.
  3. Review whether the editor is writing to the resolver and whether it is also setting a chain-specific record.
  4. Sign the transaction, then query the name again from the manager and an independent application.

Changing a record changes what applications retrieve; it does not change who owns the name. If a wallet continues to show an old value, check its cache, the resolver assignment, the selected chain, and transaction confirmation.

Transferring ownership and managing subdomains

Transfer the .eth name

An ownership transfer changes the registry owner to a new address. It is not the same as changing the resolver’s address record. Before signing, verify the recipient address on the transaction review screen and make sure the recipient can control that address. After confirmation, the former owner may no longer be able to renew, change records, or transfer the name.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Transfer controls depend on the name’s ENS version and setup. Use the current manager’s transfer action and inspect the contract call rather than sending a generic token transfer or manually guessing a contract method.

Create or reassign subdomains

ENS terminology allows an owner to create or reassign subdomains, subject to the permissions of the parent name, registry, and resolver. A subdomain can have its own owner, resolver, and records. Treat a subdomain assignment as a separate authority decision: giving someone control of team.alice.eth does not necessarily give them control of alice.eth, but the parent’s permissions can still determine what is possible.

Setting an ENS name as a primary name

A primary name is bidirectional. The address must reverse-resolve to the ENS name, and the ENS name must forward-resolve to that same address on the relevant chain. A reverse record alone is insufficient.

Set it on the relevant chain

  1. Make sure the name’s resolver returns your intended address through its forward address record.
  2. Open the primary-name or reverse-record action for the address and choose the name.
  3. Select the chain whose reverse record you are changing and review the address shown by the interface.
  4. Submit the transaction and then verify both directions: address to name and name to address.

ENS documents a default Ethereum reverse record and chain-specific reverse records for supported networks including Arbitrum, Base, Linea, OP Mainnet, and Scroll. An application may read a chain-specific record when available or use the Ethereum default as a fallback. Support and application behavior can change, so follow the networks currently exposed by the manager rather than hard-coding deployment assumptions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Common failures and safe recovery

  • Reveal attempted too soon: wait until at least 60 seconds have elapsed from the confirmed commitment transaction, then retry from the same flow.
  • Commitment not found: reconnect the wallet that submitted it, check the commitment transaction’s confirmation, and confirm that the secret and label have not changed.
  • Insufficient payment-token allowance: on the ENSv2 path, approve only the amount and token requested by the current registrar transaction, then return to registration or renewal.
  • Wrong network: switch to the network shown for the intended operation and recheck every address before signing.
  • Record changed but applications still show the old value: verify the resolver, chain-specific record, transaction confirmation, and application cache.
  • Primary name rejected: ensure the name forward-resolves to the exact same address whose reverse record you are setting.
  • Unexpected owner or transfer concern: stop signing, inspect the confirmed registry owner on-chain, and use only the current trusted manager to make further changes.

A practical management checklist

  • Write down the exact label, owner address, resolver, and expiry.
  • Record whether the name is ENSv1, ENSv2, migrated, or still reserved under v1.
  • Renew before expiry and recheck the version-specific grace-period rule if the date has passed.
  • Keep the commitment secret until reveal and retain both transaction hashes.
  • Separate ownership transfers, resolver changes, address-record edits, and reverse-record updates; they are different transactions.
  • For a primary name, verify forward and reverse resolution on the same relevant chain.
  • Review live pricing, payment tokens, contract destinations, and network fees immediately before every signature.

ENS management is safest when you treat each change as an on-chain permissioned action and verify the resulting state afterward. The current interface and name-specific status take precedence over a remembered v1 or v2 procedure.
