To fly legally in the United States, first classify the operation as recreational or non-recreational. Recreational flyers using the FAA’s limited exception generally need to pass the Recreational UAS Safety Test (TRUST), register the aircraft when required, comply with Remote ID, obtain controlled-airspace authorization when necessary, keep the drone within visual line of sight, and yield to crewed aircraft. Commercial, government, and other non-recreational operations generally use the FAA’s Part 107 framework and require a Remote Pilot Certificate.
Registration, TRUST, Remote ID, and airspace approval are separate obligations. Completing one does not automatically satisfy the others, and FAA approval does not settle state or local privacy rules, landowner permission, or restrictions imposed by a park, airport, or other site manager.

Recreational flying
You may use the limited recreational exception only when the operation is genuinely for recreation and meets the exception’s conditions. Recreational pilots must follow applicable community-based safety guidelines, pass TRUST before flying, maintain visual line of sight when required, yield to crewed aircraft, and obtain authorization before operating in controlled airspace. The FAA explains the permission question and the exception at its recreational-flight FAQ.
Part 107 operations
Commercial, government, educational, public-safety, and other non-recreational operations generally fall under Part 107. The operator needs an FAA Remote Pilot Certificate and must follow Part 107’s operating limits, registration rules, airspace procedures, and any applicable waiver or authorization conditions. Start with the FAA’s Getting Started overview if the flight has a mixed purpose or does not fit cleanly into recreation.
A single pilot or business can conduct both types of operations, but the aircraft and registration must be handled under the category used for each operation. Registration cannot simply be moved from the recreational category to Part 107 or the other way around.

The FAA’s current registration guidance at How to Register Your Drone sets two key rules:
| Situation | Registration requirement | How the inventory works |
|---|---|---|
| Recreational operation under the limited exception | A drone weighing more than 0.55 pounds (250 grams) must be registered. A drone at or below that weight can be flown without registration only when it is operated under the stated recreational exception. | One recreational registration can cover the flyer’s listed drone inventory. |
| Part 107 operation | Register every drone, regardless of weight. | Each drone is registered separately in the Part 107 inventory. |
The FAA currently lists a $5 registration fee and a three-year validity period for either registration type. These administrative figures can change, so verify the amount and term on the FAA registration page immediately before submitting an application. A registration is not transferable between recreational and Part 107 operation types.
Information to have ready
- Your contact details.
- The drone’s make and model.
- The applicable Remote ID serial number, when required by the registration workflow.
- A payment card for the registration charge.
Registration procedure
- Open the FAA’s drone-registration page and select the operating category that matches the flight’s purpose.
- Choose the recreational inventory route if you are registering for qualifying recreational operations, or the Part 107 route if the drone will be used for non-recreational work.
- Enter the requested contact, aircraft, and Remote ID information exactly as it appears on the aircraft, module, and manufacturer documentation.
- Pay the fee shown by the FAA and submit the application.
- Save the registration confirmation and place the FAA registration number on the drone as required by current marking instructions. Keep the number legible and accessible during operations.
- For a recreational inventory, add each covered device according to the FAA’s instructions. For Part 107, complete a separate registration for every aircraft.
Check the registration record whenever you change a drone, its Remote ID equipment, or the operating category. The FAA’s registration page is the controlling source for current marking, inventory, and renewal details.

3. Complete the required pilot credential
TRUST for recreational flyers
Before flying under the limited recreational exception, pass the FAA-developed Recreational UAS Safety Test, known as TRUST. The FAA states that the test is delivered online by approved test administrators, with the FAA supplying the test content. The requirement is described on the TRUST page.
Carry proof that you passed. FAA guidance says recreational flyers must provide proof if asked by law-enforcement or FAA personnel. Keep a digital copy on your phone and, where practical, a backup copy that remains available if your phone battery fails.
Remote Pilot Certificate for Part 107
A non-recreational operator generally needs an FAA Remote Pilot Certificate. Follow the FAA’s Part 107 certification instructions for the initial knowledge requirement, application, and any recurrent training or other continuing obligations that apply to your certificate. Do not substitute TRUST for Part 107 certification; they serve different operating categories.
4. Make Remote ID part of the setup
The FAA requires a drone that must be registered, or that is registered, to comply with Remote ID. The FAA describes the available approaches on Remote Identification of Drones.
Three ways to comply
- Standard Remote ID: the drone has built-in equipment that broadcasts the required identification and location information.
- Remote ID broadcast module: an FAA-compliant module is attached to a drone that does not have Standard Remote ID. The pilot must be able to see the drone throughout the flight when using this option.
- FAA-recognized FRIA: a drone without Standard Remote ID or a broadcast module may operate within a qualifying FAA-recognized identification area, subject to the conditions that apply to that area.
Verify the exact aircraft or module
- Look up the aircraft or module in the FAA Declaration of Compliance System before relying on its Remote ID claim.
- Compare the model and serial number in the FAA record with the manufacturer’s label and documentation.
- Enter the applicable Remote ID serial number in the registration workflow and keep inventory details synchronized.
- Test the system according to the manufacturer’s instructions before the first flight and after firmware, module, or aircraft changes.
Recreational pilots use the FAA’s inventory process to list covered devices. Part 107 operators register each Standard Remote ID drone or broadcast module separately in the Part 107 inventory. A registration number alone does not prove that the aircraft is broadcasting Remote ID correctly.
5. Check airspace before every flight
Airspace approval is location-, time-, and altitude-specific. A previous approval, a clear-looking map, or permission to fly at one site does not authorize a different site or date. Use current FAA airspace resources and an FAA-approved LAANC provider when available.

Recreational flights in controlled airspace
Recreational pilots must obtain prior authorization before operating in controlled airspace. Through LAANC, an application can be submitted on the planned flight date or up to 90 days in advance where the service is available. The authorization identifies the approved location, time window, and altitude. Keep the approval available during the flight and remain within every condition.
If an airport or area is not enabled for LAANC, use the FAA’s Drone Zone process instead. Requests handled manually can take longer, so submit them well before the planned operation and do not treat a pending request as approval. See the FAA’s Airspace Authorizations for Recreational Flyers.
Part 107 flights
Part 107 operators can request near-real-time LAANC authorizations at altitudes shown on the applicable UAS Facility Map. Where available, a further-coordination request can address some operations above those values and below 400 feet. Requests outside LAANC coverage go through the FAA’s Part 107 Drone Zone process. The FAA’s Part 107 Airspace Authorizations page says Drone Zone processing has historically taken up to eight weeks and that actual times vary.

Airports and crewed aircraft
Near an airport, plan for traffic that may not appear on a consumer drone map. The FAA states: “Remember that drone operators must avoid manned aircraft and are responsible for any safety hazard their drone creates in an airport environment.” Review the FAA’s Flying Near Airports guidance and remain prepared to land immediately if a crewed aircraft approaches.

- Identify the operation: confirm that the flight is recreational or Part 107 and that the pilot has the matching test or certificate.
- Confirm registration: verify that the aircraft is registered when required, the registration number is marked as required, and the record matches the operating category.
- Confirm Remote ID: check Standard Remote ID, a compliant broadcast module, or a qualifying FRIA route. Confirm that the serial number and inventory entry are correct.
- Review airspace: inspect current controlled-airspace boundaries, temporary flight restrictions, airport areas, and other notices. Obtain LAANC or Drone Zone approval before entering controlled airspace.
- Check site permission: confirm that the property owner, park, land manager, or event organizer permits takeoff and landing. FAA airspace authorization does not grant access to land.
- Assess people and vehicles: keep clear of uninvolved people and moving vehicles unless the applicable Part 107 rule, authorization, or waiver specifically permits the operation.
- Establish visual line of sight: position the pilot so the aircraft can be seen as required, and arrange any permitted visual observer before launch.
- Inspect the aircraft: check propellers, motors, battery condition, controller connection, firmware status, compass or navigation warnings, and the return-to-home setting.
- Set an emergency plan: identify a landing area, an action for lost link or low battery, and a way to stop or land if an aircraft, person, or vehicle enters the operating area.
- Brief everyone involved: explain the flight boundary, launch point, hazards, communication method, and abort signal to observers or assistants.
7. Understand the rules that change with the operation
Visual line of sight
Recreational flyers must maintain visual line of sight under the exception’s requirements. Do not let the aircraft disappear behind buildings, terrain, trees, or darkness. A phone or first-person-view display can help with framing, but it does not replace the required ability to see the aircraft unless a specific rule and approved arrangement applies.

Always yield to crewed aircraft. Landing or moving away is safer than attempting to hold position in a conflict. A drone pilot is responsible for preventing the operation from creating a hazard, especially near airports, heliports, emergency scenes, and busy public areas.
Night operations under Part 107
Part 107 night operations have additional conditions. In the FAA’s stated nighttime context, the remote pilot must hold the relevant certificate, the drone must be registered and marked, the aircraft must have anti-collision lighting visible for at least three statute miles, and controlled-airspace authorization must be obtained when required. The detailed rule and any waiver or authorization determine whether a particular night flight is allowed; the lighting requirement alone is not a blanket permission.
Operations over people and moving vehicles
Flying over people or moving vehicles can trigger additional Part 107 requirements, aircraft eligibility limits, operational restrictions, or waiver conditions. Evaluate the exact rule before launch rather than assuming that a lightweight drone or a brief overflight is automatically permitted. Recreational flyers should avoid these exposures unless their applicable recreational safety guidelines and local requirements clearly support the operation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.8. Account for rules outside the FAA system
FAA compliance addresses federal aviation requirements, not every rule that affects a flight. Before launching, check:
- State and municipal privacy, harassment, trespass, and surveillance laws.
- Rules for national, state, county, and city parks.
- Property-owner or land-manager restrictions on takeoff and landing.
- Event, stadium, construction-site, school, or emergency-response restrictions.
- Temporary flight restrictions and notices published after your original planning.
Do not record people in places where they reasonably expect privacy, and avoid collecting more personal information than the flight requires. If a site manager prohibits launching, FAA authorization cannot override that decision. Likewise, a legal takeoff from private property does not erase privacy obligations toward people outside the property.

9. What to carry and retain
Keep the documents and information that may be needed during an inspection or emergency:
- Proof of TRUST passage for a recreational operation, or the Remote Pilot Certificate information for Part 107.
- The aircraft registration confirmation and registration number.
- Remote ID make, model, serial number, and broadcast-module information where applicable.
- Current LAANC or Drone Zone authorization, including its altitude, location, and time limits.
- Manufacturer emergency and battery guidance.
- A phone or backup device with the current airspace map and a charged controller.
Store records in a place that remains available without a mobile signal. After a flight, note unusual battery behavior, lost-link events, hard landings, or equipment changes before the next operation.
10. Troubleshoot common situations
“My drone weighs less than 0.55 pounds, so I do not need anything.”
Weight can remove the registration requirement only for a qualifying recreational operation under the limited exception. It does not remove TRUST, Remote ID obligations when registration is required or the aircraft is registered, airspace authorization, visual-line-of-sight, right-of-way, privacy, or local-site rules. A sub-250-gram drone used for Part 107 work must still be registered under that category.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
“The app says I can fly, but I am near an airport.”
Stop and verify the current FAA airspace status and whether a specific LAANC or Drone Zone authorization is required. A map display is not the same as an issued authorization. Check the approval’s exact altitude, boundary, date, and time before launch.
“My aircraft has no built-in Remote ID.”
Determine whether an FAA-compliant broadcast module is listed in the Declaration of Compliance System, or whether the planned location is a qualifying FRIA. If using a module, keep the drone visible throughout the flight and record the correct module information in the applicable registration inventory.
“I passed TRUST but want to film a paid project.”
That purpose generally moves the operation into the Part 107 route. Obtain the required Remote Pilot Certificate, register the aircraft under Part 107, and follow the Part 107 operating and airspace requirements before accepting the assignment.
“The request is still pending.”
Do not fly in the controlled area until authorization is issued. Manual Drone Zone processing can take substantial time, and the FAA’s published historical estimate for some Part 107 requests has been up to eight weeks, with actual processing varying.

11. A compact decision path
- Purpose: recreation only, or another purpose?
- Credential: TRUST for qualifying recreation; Remote Pilot Certificate for Part 107.
- Registration: apply the 0.55-pound recreational exception or register each Part 107 drone.
- Remote ID: Standard Remote ID, compliant broadcast module, or qualifying FRIA.
- Airspace: check current restrictions and obtain LAANC or Drone Zone approval when required.
- Site and privacy: obtain launch-site permission and follow state, local, land-manager, and privacy rules.
- Flight: maintain required visual line of sight, yield to crewed aircraft, stay within authorization limits, and land when conditions become unsafe.
If any answer is uncertain, postpone the flight until the FAA page, authorization system, manufacturer documentation, or local authority gives you a clear answer. The safest legal operation is the one planned around the exact aircraft, pilot, location, date, altitude, and purpose—not a generic assumption that all drones follow the same rules.
