The registrar where you bought the domain may not control its live DNS. Check nameserver delegation before changing anything; editing the wrong DNS panel cannot change the public zone.

Registration and DNS are different jobs
A registrar records your ownership of a domain. DNS hosting publishes the records that tell browsers and other systems where that domain should resolve. The same company can provide both services, but it does not have to. A domain registered with one company may delegate its nameservers to a completely different DNS operator.

As CustomDomain’s setup guide puts it, “Where a domain is registered and where its DNS is answered are separate things.” Read the custom-domain explanation before you start. Your first operational question is therefore not “Where did I buy the domain?” but “Which nameservers are authoritative right now?”

What you need before connecting an AI service
- A registered domain, or a name you intend to register.
- The exact hostname you want to use, such as
app.example.com,api.example.comor the apexexample.com. - An account and deployment for the AI agent, API, website or hosting platform.
- Access to the DNS panel operated by the domain’s authoritative nameservers.
- The platform’s current verification and routing values. These may include a TXT challenge, a CNAME target or A records.
- An inventory of existing website, email, verification and policy records if you may change nameservers.
Do not copy a target from a tutorial for another vendor. A CNAME target is service-specific, and the platform dashboard is the authority for the value you must publish.
Step 1: Register or select the domain
Choose a name and extension
If you do not already own a suitable name, search for an available domain and select a registrar. The setup workflow does not depend on a particular registrar, and current prices, renewal terms, privacy options and registration screens vary. Check those terms on the registrar’s current pages before paying.
You can leave the registration at that registrar while using another DNS operator. Registration transfer is not required merely to connect an AI service.
Confirm control of the account
Make sure you can edit the domain’s nameserver delegation and DNSSEC settings, or identify the administrator who can. You may also need access to the email address used for registration or to the platform account that owns the service.
Step 2: Find the authoritative DNS operator
Look up the NS records
Use a DNS lookup tool or a command such as dig NS example.com to retrieve the domain’s NS records. The returned nameserver hostnames identify the operator whose zone is authoritative. If the result lists nameservers belonging to a managed DNS service, make changes in that service’s dashboard rather than automatically using the registrar’s editor.

Some registrar interfaces continue to display a DNS editor even when the domain delegates elsewhere. An edit in that non-authoritative panel will not control the live zone. Confirm that the panel you open corresponds to the nameservers returned by the lookup.
Understand what the common records do

| SOA | Zone-apex metadata that exists alongside NS records; its presence is why the apex cannot hold a conventional CNAME. |
| DS | Delegation-signing data at the registry used by DNSSEC; it must match the signing state of the replacement DNS zone during a migration. |
Step 3: Add the hostname in the agent or hosting platform
Open the service’s domain, custom-domain or deployment settings and add the hostname you want to connect. The platform should then show the records required for verification and routing. Follow those current values exactly; labels, punctuation and whether a trailing dot is displayed can vary by DNS panel.

Some service and DNS-provider combinations support Domain Connect. When both sides support the integration, an authorization flow can request and apply the records on your behalf. Review the proposed changes before approving them. The Domain Connect specification is published as an IETF draft, not evidence of a finalized standard; availability depends on the particular providers. See the Domain Connect draft.
Manual connection
With a manual setup, the platform gives you a record name, type and value. Microsoft’s domain-connection documentation describes this general pattern: records are added at the DNS hosting provider, even when the domain was purchased elsewhere. Review the manual DNS-record workflow.
Step 4: Publish the ownership-verification record
Copy the challenge exactly
A platform may ask for a TXT record or another proof that you control the domain. In the authoritative DNS panel, create the record name and value shown in the service dashboard. Do not alter capitalization, quotation handling or embedded punctuation unless the panel explicitly requires a different input format.

Keep unrelated TXT records. A domain can have several TXT records for different services, and deleting an existing one can break another verification or policy.
Wait for the platform to detect it
Return to the service dashboard and select its verify or check button when available. Detection depends on DNS caching and the platform’s polling behavior; no single propagation interval applies to every provider. If verification fails, query the authoritative nameserver directly and compare the returned value with the platform’s challenge before changing anything.
Step 5: Publish the routing record
Subdomain connection with CNAME
For a hostname such as app.example.com, the usual instruction is a CNAME whose target is the hostname supplied by the AI or hosting platform. Enter only the host label the DNS panel expects: some panels want app, while others accept the complete app.example.com. The service’s instructions take precedence.
Check for conflicts before saving. A hostname cannot simultaneously use a CNAME and other address records in the way most DNS providers permit. Remove or modify a conflicting record only when the service instructs you to do so, and preserve records belonging to other hostnames.
Why the apex is different
The apex, written as example.com without a host label, is the zone root. It carries SOA and NS records, so a conventional CNAME cannot occupy it. This is a DNS rule, not a limitation specific to AI services.

If the platform supports the apex, use one of these documented options:
- A provider-supported apex alias or equivalent flattened record.
- The exact A-record addresses supplied by the service.
- A subdomain such as
app.example.comwhen the service does not support an apex connection.
Apex-alias implementations are provider-specific and are not interchangeable. Do not convert a CNAME target into guessed IP addresses or copy A records from another platform.
Step 6: Verify that the service is live and secure
- In the service dashboard, open the domain status page and check whether verification and routing have passed.
- Query the intended hostname and confirm that the expected CNAME or A response is visible from the authoritative DNS operator.
- Open the hostname with
https://, not only HTTP, and check that the certificate matches the hostname. - Exercise the actual agent endpoint or web interface, including authentication and any callback URL the service requires.
- Keep the verification record unless the platform explicitly says it can be removed; some services use it for continuing ownership checks.
Connection workflows can show intermediate states such as pending or propagating and then mark a domain live after the desired records resolve. Certificate issuance is a separate provider action. Firebase, for example, documents certificate provisioning after its verification and DNS steps; its timing and behavior do not establish a universal schedule for every platform. Three ways to connect a domain

Changing nameservers is a migration
Inventory the existing zone
Before editing delegation, export or record every entry that must continue working. Include the current website, mail delivery, mail-authentication, verification and policy records, as well as records for subdomains and integrations. A replacement DNS zone that contains only the new AI-service record can silently take down unrelated services.

Build and test the replacement zone
Create the records at the new DNS operator before changing the domain’s NS delegation. Compare names, types and values with the inventory. Keep the old DNS service available during the transition so you can investigate discrepancies.
Check DNSSEC and the DS record
Look at the registrar’s DNSSEC controls and determine whether a DS record remains published at the registry. CustomDomain’s managed-DNS documentation warns that a DS record paired with an unsigned replacement zone can cause validating resolvers to fail. Confirm the chosen DNS host’s current DNSSEC support and migration procedure; do not leave signing metadata in an inconsistent state. Read the managed-DNS guidance.
Change delegation and monitor
Only after the replacement zone is complete should you change the domain’s nameservers. Recheck NS responses, the AI service’s verification record, the routing record and critical website and email records from more than one network. DNS caches can retain previous answers, so monitor rather than assuming every resolver changes at once.
Troubleshooting by symptom
The platform cannot find the TXT challenge
- Run an authoritative lookup and confirm you edited the DNS operator named by the NS records.
- Check that the record name was entered relative to the zone correctly; a panel may append the domain automatically.
- Compare the complete value, including punctuation and any required quotation handling.
- Look for duplicate or stale challenges and use the currently displayed value from the platform.
The CNAME appears correct but the hostname does not load
- Confirm the CNAME target is the exact hostname supplied for your service, not a sample target.
- Remove a conflicting A, AAAA or other address entry only if the platform instructs you to.
- Check that you connected the same hostname you are testing;
example.comandapp.example.comare different names. - Wait for the platform’s status to move beyond its pending or propagating state, then test again.
The apex connection fails
- Do not create a conventional CNAME at the zone root.
- Use the platform’s documented apex alias feature, its exact A records or a supported subdomain.
- Ask the DNS operator whether its alias implementation has special record-type or proxy requirements.
HTTPS shows a certificate warning
- Confirm the platform has completed ownership and routing verification.
- Check that you are visiting the exact hostname for which the service is issuing a certificate.
- Allow for the provider’s certificate-provisioning process; DNS visibility and certificate deployment are related but separate events.
- Do not install a certificate for a different hostname or treat an HTTP success page as proof that HTTPS is ready.
Website or email stopped after a nameserver change
- Compare the new zone with the pre-migration inventory.
- Restore missing website, mail, verification or policy records.
- Inspect DNSSEC status and the registry’s DS record if validating resolvers report failures.
- Use the DNS operator’s migration and rollback instructions rather than repeatedly switching nameservers without a complete zone.
A practical pre-launch checklist
- Domain ownership and renewal access are confirmed.
- Authoritative NS records have been identified.
- The service hostname and exact verification/routing values are copied from the current platform dashboard.
- TXT verification is published at the authoritative operator.
- Subdomain CNAME or approved apex method is configured without an unapproved conflict.
- Existing website, email and policy records remain intact.
- DNSSEC and DS state are consistent if nameservers were changed.
- The platform reports the domain as connected or live.
- The hostname works over HTTPS and presents the expected certificate.
- The agent endpoint, login flow and any integrations have been tested using the custom hostname.
Keep the connection maintainable
Document the registrar, authoritative DNS operator, nameserver values, service account, verification record purpose and date of the last change. Restrict DNS-editor access to the people who need it and enable the provider’s account security controls. When the AI platform changes its target or asks you to rotate a verification value, make the change in the authoritative zone and retest HTTPS and the application endpoint.
