Yes, you can ask Steam for a refund, but a game becoming free later does not automatically guarantee one. Steam’s standard rule is that the request must be made within 14 days of purchase and the game must have less than two hours of total playtime. If you miss either limit, Steam still lets you submit a request for individual review, but approval is discretionary. Start at Steam Help, open Purchases, select the game, choose I’d like to request a refund, and submit the form.
Does a paid game becoming free qualify for an automatic Steam refund?
No separate automatic refund guarantee is stated for that situation. Steam’s published Common Refund Questions page sets out a general rule for games and other software: request the refund within 14 days of purchase and keep recorded playtime below two hours. The FAQ does not list a later conversion from paid to free-to-play as an exception or special entitlement. Read the current policy at Steam Support’s Common Refund Questions.

That does not make a request pointless. If your purchase falls outside the standard limits, Steam says you can still send a request and it will review it. The wording describes a chance to ask, not a promise that the price difference will be returned. Your request should therefore explain the timeline accurately without claiming that the later free release obliges Steam to approve it.

The practical decision
| Purchase circumstances | How to approach the request |
|---|---|
| Purchased within 14 days and played for less than two hours | Submit a normal refund request. These are Steam’s stated standard conditions. |
| Purchased more than 14 days ago, or played for two hours or more | Submit the request anyway if you want Steam to consider the circumstances, but approval is not assured. |
| Game became free after you bought it | Mention the original purchase date and the date or period when it became free, but do not present the change as an automatic policy exception. |
The standard playtime limit is measured across online, offline and shared-library play, so the figure shown for the title can matter even if you did not play continuously after buying it.

Check your eligibility before you start
Gather the information Steam will need and compare it with the two standard limits. This avoids sending an incomplete explanation or assuming that the free-to-play change alone decides the outcome.
Purchase date
Steam’s standard window is 14 days from the purchase. If the purchase is still inside that period, use the ordinary refund path. If it is older, you can still request a review, but it is outside the normal rule.
Total playtime
The standard condition is less than two hours of playtime. Steam’s FAQ says this includes online, offline and shared-library play. Do not calculate only the sessions you remember; use the playtime Steam records for that title.
Why the game is now free
Record the relevant facts: what you paid, when you bought it, when you noticed the free release, and how much you played. Keep the explanation neutral. A price change may be important context for a reviewer, but the published FAQ does not say it overrides the 14-day or two-hour conditions.
How to submit the refund request
Steam’s official instructions use Steam Help rather than a separate store-page form. Follow these steps:

- Sign in to Steam Help. Open How To Request A Refund and sign in to the account that made the purchase.
- Open Purchases. The support page presents your purchase history. Find the paid game in that list.
- Select the game purchase. Steam’s instructions say to find the purchase you want to refund and click it. Choose the transaction for the game, not a different wallet deposit or unrelated item.
- Choose the issue that best describes the situation. Pick the closest reason offered by Steam. If the game later became free, select the option that most accurately reflects the purchase and explain the price change in the text field rather than choosing a misleading reason.
- Choose “I’d like to request a refund.” This opens the refund form for that transaction.
- Complete the form with the facts. Include the purchase date, your recorded playtime, and that the title later became free. If you are outside the standard limits, explicitly ask Steam to review the request as an exception.
- Select a refund destination. Steam shows the available choices, which can include Steam Wallet or the original payment method. Pick the option you want from those displayed for your transaction.
- Submit the request. Steam sends a confirmation by email. Keep that message until the request is resolved.
The labels and available payment choices can depend on the transaction. If a destination is not offered on the form, do not assume it can be added manually; submit using one of the choices Steam presents.
What to write in the explanation
A concise, factual explanation gives the reviewer the details needed to apply the policy. It should not imply that Steam has published a guaranteed refund for a later free release.

If your purchase is under 14 days old and your total playtime is under two hours, state those facts plainly. For example:
I purchased this game on [purchase date]. Steam shows less than two hours of total playtime. The game later became free to play, so I would like to request a refund to [Steam Wallet or original payment method].
The bracketed items are fields you should replace with your own information; they are not part of Steam’s form syntax. Make sure the date and playtime match the account record.

For a request outside the standard limits
If more than 14 days have passed or your playtime is at least two hours, acknowledge that directly and ask for a review:

The title later became free to play. This approach is more credible than presenting the price change as an automatic entitlement. Steam’s FAQ expressly allows users outside the described rules to submit a request for consideration, while also leaving the decision to Steam.
How Steam’s timing rules apply
The two standard limits are independent. Being under two hours does not extend the 14-day window, and being within 14 days does not remove the playtime requirement. Check both before you submit.
| Item | Published timing | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Standard refund request | Within 14 days of purchase | A request made during this period meets the time portion of Steam’s standard rule. |
| Standard playtime | Less than two hours | Steam counts total online, offline and shared-library playtime for the title. |
| Approved refund appearance | Up to seven days | Steam says an approved refund can take up to seven days to appear; international payment methods may take longer. |
| Approved Steam Wallet credit | 24–48 hours | Steam gives this estimate specifically for credit returned to the Steam Wallet. |
The processing estimates apply after approval, not from the moment you open the form. A pending request is not evidence that the refund has been accepted or rejected.

What happens when your request is outside the rules?
Steam’s policy distinguishes between its standard eligibility conditions and the ability to ask for a review. The FAQ says, “Even if you fall outside of the refund rules we’ve described, you can submit a request and we’ll take a look at it.” That sentence confirms that the form is still worth using, but it does not create a guaranteed result.
More than 14 days since purchase
Submit through the same Purchases path and explain that the game became free after your purchase. Include the exact purchase date so Steam can see how far outside the normal window the request is. Avoid describing the request as a routine, automatically eligible refund.
Two hours or more of playtime
Use the playtime Steam records, including offline and shared-library sessions. If the recorded total is at least two hours, state it rather than supplying a lower estimate based on memory. The reviewer can see the account data associated with the purchase.
Both limits exceeded
You may still submit one clear request, but the case is entirely dependent on Steam’s review. Explain the sequence—purchase, playtime, and later free release—in that order. Do not create multiple requests that repeat the same facts unless Steam asks you to provide more information.
Choosing Steam Wallet or the original payment method
At the final stage, Steam offers the refund destinations available for your transaction. The two choices identified in the support flow are Steam Wallet and the original payment method.

Steam Wallet
If Steam approves a Wallet refund, the published estimate is 24–48 hours for the credit to appear. Wallet credit remains inside Steam, so it is useful only if you intend to spend the balance there.
Original payment method
A refund to the original payment method can take up to seven days to appear after approval. Steam notes that international payment methods may take longer. The form may not offer every method for every transaction; select only from the options shown.
Troubleshooting the request
The game is not listed under Purchases
Confirm that you signed in to the Steam account that made the payment. Purchases are tied to the account, so a different account will not show the transaction you are looking for. If you still cannot identify it, check your purchase records and use the transaction that corresponds to the game rather than a separate wallet top-up.
You cannot find the refund option
Open the purchase itself and choose the issue that best matches your situation. The refund choice appears after you select the relevant purchase and issue. If the game is now free, explain that fact in the request instead of looking for a special “became free” category; Steam’s published flow does not identify one.
Your playtime appears higher than expected
Steam’s standard rule includes online, offline and shared-library play. Compare the displayed total with the two-hour limit rather than relying on your own session history. If the total is above the limit, you can still submit an exception request, but describe the recorded figure accurately.
You have not received confirmation
Steam says it confirms the request by email. Check the inbox associated with the Steam account, including spam or filtered folders, and keep the submitted request details. The processing window starts after approval; the email confirmation itself does not mean the money has already been returned.
The approved refund has not appeared
Allow up to seven days for an approved refund to reach the original payment method, with longer times possible for international payment methods. For an approved Steam Wallet refund, allow the stated 24–48 hours. If the applicable period has passed, use the confirmation and transaction details when contacting Steam Support again.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Assuming the free release guarantees a refund. Steam’s FAQ does not list a paid-to-free conversion as a separate guarantee.
- Ignoring the purchase date. The 14-day limit is measured from the purchase, not from the day the game became free.
- Underreporting playtime. Steam includes online, offline and shared-library play in the total.
- Choosing an unrelated issue. Select the closest accurate issue and explain the free release in your own words.
- Expecting an instant payment. Approval and payment processing are separate; the published estimates apply after approval.
- Sending an exaggerated explanation. A factual timeline gives Steam the information needed for a discretionary review.
A simple decision path
- Check the purchase date.
- Check the title’s total Steam playtime.
- If both are within 14 days and under two hours, submit a standard refund request.
- If either limit is exceeded, submit the same form as a review request and explain that the game later became free.
- Select Steam Wallet or the original payment method offered for the transaction.
- Save the email confirmation and wait for the applicable processing period after approval.
What you can reasonably expect
The strongest case is one that meets both published conditions: a purchase made within 14 days and less than two hours of total playtime. A later free-to-play release can be included as context, but it is not described by Steam as an automatic exception. Outside those conditions, the correct next step is still to submit a request, while recognizing that Steam may decline it after review.
