If a Steam game you bought for your friends will not launch, will not let your group join the same session, or is missing a promised feature, request the refund from the Steam account that made the purchase. Steam’s standard rule for games is a request within 14 days of purchase and less than two hours of recorded playtime. Online, offline and shared-library playtime all count. Steam can review requests outside those limits, but an exception is not guaranteed.
Check whether the purchase fits Steam’s standard refund rule
Steam’s normal game-refund window has two parts: the purchase must be less than 14 days old, and the title must have less than two hours of recorded playtime. Valve’s Steam Refunds policy, last updated April 23, 2024, describes those figures as the standard conditions for a game refund. They are eligibility thresholds, not an approval guarantee.

Do not assume that multiplayer testing is excluded from the two-hour limit. Trying to create a lobby, waiting for friends to connect, restarting after a crash and testing through Steam Family or shared-library access can all consume recorded playtime. Check the title’s Steam Support purchase entry before you spend more time testing it.

What to document when a game fails for your group
A refund request is clearer when it explains the concrete problem rather than simply saying that the game is “bad.” Describe what happened, when it happened and whether the failure was repeatable.

Launch or installation failure
- State whether Steam finished downloading and installing the game.
- Say whether the game opened, crashed immediately, displayed an error or returned to the desktop.
- Include the exact error text if one appeared.
- Note whether every affected member saw the same problem or only one computer did.
Friends cannot join the same session
- Explain whether invitations were sent successfully.
- Describe the point of failure: no lobby, timeout, disconnect, incompatible version or an empty session.
- Say how many players tested the issue and whether you tried the game’s advertised multiplayer mode.
A listed feature is missing or unusable
- Name the feature as it appeared on the store page or purchase description.
- Explain what you expected to be able to do and what the game actually allowed.
- Distinguish a missing feature from a feature that was temporarily unavailable during maintenance.
Keep the explanation factual. You do not need to prove the fault with a long troubleshooting log, but dates, error messages and a short reproduction sequence make the request easier to evaluate.
How to submit the refund request through Steam Support
- Open Steam Help. Go to Steam Help and sign in to the account that purchased the game. Steam says all refund requests are handled through this support site.
- Open Purchases. Select Purchases after signing in. The page lists transactions associated with the account you used to buy the game.
- Select the game transaction. Find the relevant purchase and open it. If you bought more than one copy in separate transactions, choose the transaction that corresponds to the copy you are requesting to refund.
- Choose the problem. Select the issue that best describes the failure. The available choices can vary by transaction type and account status.
- Choose “I’d like to request a refund.” This opens the refund form for that purchase.
- Write a specific explanation. State that the game does not work for your group, then identify the actual failure: for example, “The game launches, but the four of us cannot join one session; each invitation times out.” Include the approximate date of testing and any repeatable error.
- Select the refund destination. If Steam offers a choice, select Steam Wallet or the original payment method. Some payment methods in some countries cannot return money to the original method, so the available options may differ.
- Submit the form and keep the confirmation. Steam sends a confirmation email and a later decision email. Keep both until the money appears or the request is resolved.
Use the official route rather than sending a general message to an unrelated support category. The purchase-specific form gives Steam the transaction information needed to evaluate the request.
Who should request the refund when several people are involved?
Steam does not provide a single “group refund” workflow. Each purchase is reviewed against the account and transaction that made it. If several friends bought their own copies, each person must sign in to their own account and submit a separate request for their own purchase.

Redeemed gifts
For a gift that the recipient has redeemed, Steam’s policy says the recipient starts the refund request. If Steam approves it, the funds used for the gift go back to the original purchaser. The recipient should therefore explain the group problem in the account’s purchase-support flow, while the purchaser should watch for the returned funds.
Shared-library access
If only one person bought the game and other members played through sharing, the owner selects the transaction in the owner’s account. Friends who did not purchase the title cannot independently refund that transaction. Steam Support specifically says shared-library playtime is included in the two-hour calculation.
What if you are outside 14 days or over two hours?
You can still submit an honest request when a substantial technical problem prevents the game from working as represented. Steam’s policy says Valve will look at requests outside the described rules, but those requests are reviewed rather than automatically qualifying.

Explain why the issue could not reasonably be discovered sooner. For example, a group-only connection failure may appear only after several people have installed the game, or a promised cooperative mode may be inaccessible despite normal setup. Give the dates, total testing time as you understand it and the exact failure. Do not claim that the standard policy covers the request if it does not.

Steam’s statement about reviewing an out-of-window request is not a promise that it will approve one.
Steam also warns that it may stop offering refunds if it considers the process abused. Do not repeatedly buy, play and refund games as a way to use them without paying.
How long the refund takes and where the money goes
Steam says an approved refund is issued within one week through Steam Wallet or the original payment method, subject to payment-method limitations. Steam Support adds that the money can take up to seven days to appear, Steam Wallet credit may arrive in 24–48 hours, and international payment methods can take longer.
- Steam Wallet: Steam Support says wallet funds can take 24–48 hours after approval.
- Original payment method: Some methods or countries cannot receive a return to the original source, so Steam may offer Wallet credit instead.
- International payment: Cross-border processing can take longer than the ordinary seven-day period.
- Authorization release: If a transaction is cancelled within 24 hours, your bank may show a released authorization rather than a separate refund credit.
If Steam approved the request and the funds still do not appear after seven days, Steam Support advises contacting your bank about pending refunds. International transactions may require additional time even after the bank receives the release.

The Steam refund policy applies to purchases made through Steam. Steam says it cannot refund purchases made outside Steam, including third-party Steam Wallet cards. A retailer, marketplace or other seller that processed the payment must handle those transactions under its own policy.

Do not substitute a refund request for a chargeback while the Steam review is pending. A bank dispute can affect your account and is a separate process. First use Steam’s purchase-specific support route and keep the confirmation emails.
How to write an effective explanation
The form is not a technical support essay. A short, verifiable account is usually more useful than an emotional complaint.
A practical format
- Identify the purchase context: “I bought this game on [date] for a four-player session.”
- Name the failure: “The game launches, but no member of our group can join the host.”
- Describe the repeatable result: “We tested three invitations on two evenings; each attempt timed out before the lobby loaded.”
- State the consequence: “Because the advertised cooperative mode is unusable for our group, I would like to request a refund.”
Template variables such as [date] and [error message] are prompts for your own details; replace them before submitting. Avoid exaggerating the number of players, hours or attempts. Steam can see the account’s recorded playtime and transaction history.
Quick checklist before you submit
- Confirm you are signed in to the account that paid, not merely an account that accessed the game.
- Check the transaction date and recorded playtime, remembering that online, offline and shared-library sessions all count.
- Identify whether the copy was a self-purchase, redeemed gift, unredeemed gift, bundle or DLC transaction.
- Write down the precise group failure, the number of people affected and the approximate testing dates.
- Choose the refund destination offered by Steam and save the confirmation email.
Submitting promptly matters because every additional test can increase the recorded playtime, and the normal purchase window continues to run while you troubleshoot.
Common mistakes that weaken a group refund request
- Using the wrong account: A friend’s purchase or a shared copy will not appear as your own transaction.
- Describing only disappointment: “We did not like it” gives less context than a repeatable launch, connection or representation problem.
- Ignoring gift ownership: A redeemed gift is requested by the recipient, but approved money returns to the purchaser.
- Assuming two hours means active play only: Connection tests and shared-library use can be included.
- Sending duplicate requests: Wait for the decision and add omitted facts through the transaction’s support options instead of flooding Support.
- Expecting instant credit: Wallet funds may take 24–48 hours and other methods up to seven days or longer internationally.
After you submit: decision and troubleshooting branches
If Steam approves the request
Check the decision email for the destination and processing status. Wait for the normal processing period before opening a second request about the same transaction. If the destination is Steam Wallet, check the Wallet balance after 24–48 hours; for a card or other payment method, monitor the account and allow up to seven days, with longer timing possible internationally.
If Steam declines the request
Read the reason in the decision email. If important facts were omitted—such as a repeatable group-only failure or the fact that a redeemed gift was involved—you may submit a new, accurate explanation through the transaction’s support options, but do not create repeated requests simply to pressure Support. If you believe statutory digital-content rights apply where you live, seek local consumer advice.

If the purchase is missing from Purchases
Sign out and check that you are using the account that actually paid for the game. A friend’s purchase, a redeemed gift and a shared-library copy will not appear as your own transaction. Purchases made outside Steam require the seller that processed the payment.

Valve’s Steam Refunds policy says: “Valve will, upon request via help.steampowered.com, issue a refund for any reason, if the request is made within the required return period, and, in the case of games, if the title has been played for less than two hours.” The same policy describes the standard two-week purchase period and says Valve will review requests outside the stated rules. Read the sentence as a description of the standard process, not a promise that every request will be granted.
The most important practical distinction for a group is that Steam measures the purchase and playtime on the relevant account and transaction. A failed multiplayer session can support a clear request, but it does not create a separate group-wide entitlement or stop the playtime clock while you test connections.
