Choose the right frame for the destination
Reframing changes what viewers can see: it crops and positions the picture inside a new canvas. It is not just a change to the file label or orientation. Decide where the video will appear before editing, because the target placement determines the shape of the new frame.

A vertical crop from a horizontal master removes substantial space at the left and right edges. If a person moves across the frame, several people speak from different positions, or important text sits near an edge, a single fixed crop may cut off useful content. Keep the original footage or master sequence intact and make a separate version for each target shape.

Reframe a video in a deliberate pass
- Preserve the original. Duplicate the sequence or create a new canvas for the social version rather than overwriting the master. This lets you return to the original composition or make another aspect ratio later.
- Set the target ratio first. Choose the destination’s aspect ratio before adjusting clips. For a vertical Short, Reel, or TikTok version, 9:16 is a suitable starting point; use the feed ratios in the table only after confirming the placement’s current requirements.
- Run automatic reframing if your editor offers it. In Premiere Pro, select the sequence and choose Auto Reframe Sequence, then choose the target ratio, such as vertical 9:16, and create the reframed sequence. Adobe also documents applying Auto Reframe to individual clips. The feature creates a starting composition, not a final quality check.
- Review the complete edit and correct the crop. Watch every shot, not just the opening frame. Adjust position, scale, or rotation as needed; use keyframes where a subject or important action moves. Check faces, product details, captions, titles, and graphics at every cut and transition. If a crop cannot keep the relevant content visible, revise the framing or use a different edit rather than trusting the automatic result.
- Export and inspect the rendered file. Check the actual export for framing, legible on-screen text, and any crop shifts or missed moments. For a YouTube Short, verify that the video is square or vertical and no longer than three minutes under YouTube’s current Help guidance.
What YouTube currently counts as a Short
YouTube Help says a computer-uploaded Short may be up to three minutes and must use a square or vertical aspect ratio. YouTube’s date-specific rule says videos uploaded on or after October 15, 2024, that are square or vertical and up to three minutes are categorized as Shorts. Check YouTube’s current upload guidance before publishing, since platform rules can change.
Editor options for automatic reframing
Adobe Premiere Pro
Premiere Pro’s Auto Reframe can be applied to clips or a sequence for square, vertical, and widescreen output. Adobe’s workflow includes creating a vertical sequence and then refining position, scale, rotation, and keyframes. The useful distinction is that automatic analysis starts the reframing; you still need to correct moments where the subject or other essential content is not positioned well.

CapCut
CapCut documents an Auto Reframe feature with aspect-ratio selection and adjustment options, and also describes changing canvas ratios for vertical video. Feature availability can vary by app version and device, so check that your version includes the controls you need before building a workflow around them.
How to choose between them
Before choosing an editor, check whether its reframing works on an entire sequence or only on individual clips, whether it lets you correct a moving subject with keyframes, and whether the required feature is available on your device and version. Automatic framing is most useful as a first pass when you can inspect and manually fix the result.

Common reframing problems and fixes
- A face or subject is cut off: Adjust the crop’s position and, if needed, scale. Review the full shot because a position that works at the start may fail when the subject moves.
- Captions or graphics disappear: Move or resize the framing where possible, and inspect each shot transition. If essential text cannot fit in the new canvas, revise the layout rather than exporting a crop that hides it.
- The crop jumps or follows the wrong subject: Correct the framing manually and add keyframes where the subject’s position changes. Automatic analysis is not a substitute for choosing which person or action matters.
- The video looks cramped in vertical format: Reconsider whether a tight crop suits the footage. Some shots may need a different composition or edit to keep the relevant context visible.
- The upload is not treated as a Short: Check that the exported file is square or vertical and no longer than three minutes, then confirm YouTube’s current guidance for the upload.
- The result differs across social placements: Verify the current requirements for each specific placement and make separate exports when their aspect ratios differ. Do not assume one vertical file is the right format for every feed or platform.
