Brave advertises built-in blocking for YouTube ads and trackers, and its settings let you update filter lists or add custom rules. That makes Brave a practical way to reduce YouTube interruptions, but it is not a guarantee that every ad will disappear or a verified replacement for YouTube Premium.
What Brave says it blocks on YouTube
Brave’s YouTube feature page says the browser blocks ads, trackers, and other YouTube annoyances. Its published blocking policy specifically describes blocking pre-roll and mid-roll video ads on sites such as YouTube. These are Brave’s product descriptions, not independent test results or a promise that the same outcome will occur on every device, account, or session.

Brave explains that blocking behavior can be approximate because websites and tracking techniques vary. If an ad appears, first update the filter lists and check that Shields is enabled for YouTube before trying more aggressive settings.

Desktop
- Open Settings → Shields → Content filtering. You can also enter
brave://settings/shields/filtersin the address bar. - Select Update lists to refresh the enabled filters.
- Return to YouTube and reload the page.
iPhone and iPad
- Open Settings → Shields & Privacy → Content Filtering.
- Tap Update Lists, then reload YouTube.
Android
- Open Settings → Brave Shields & privacy → Content filtering.
- Tap UPDATE, then reload YouTube.

Add filters only if the built-in setup is not enough
Brave’s content-filtering settings support additional lists, including regional ad lists, and custom filters. The Help Center documents blocking page elements through the browser’s element-blocking controls as well as entering filter rules manually. Brave says it is broadly compatible with uBlock Origin’s static filter syntax; it does not mean every rule or list will behave identically in Brave.

Additional and custom lists can make blocking more comprehensive, but a rule that hides or blocks the wrong page element can break part of YouTube’s interface. Avoid adding random rules as a first step. If a custom filter causes a problem, remove or disable it and reload the page.
Standard versus Aggressive blocking
Brave’s policy distinguishes between two levels of network filtering. In Standard mode, filter-list blocking is not applied at the network level to first-party requests. Aggressive mode blocks first-party as well as third-party requests. Brave says optional and custom lists operate in Aggressive mode.

Aggressive blocking may catch requests that Standard leaves alone, but broader blocking also increases the chance that a site feature will stop working. Consider it a troubleshooting option, not a required YouTube setting. If playback, sign-in, or another feature breaks, return to Standard or disable the list or rule you added.
What “almost like Premium” means—and what it does not
Brave lists conveniences beyond ad blocking, including background playback with lockscreen controls. Its feature page also lists content playlists as iOS-only. Availability can vary by platform, and these features do not establish that Brave matches YouTube Premium. Current Premium benefits and pricing are not compared here.

In practical terms, Brave combines browser-level ad and tracker blocking with some playback conveniences. Whether that meets your needs depends on the features you use; do not assume that a browser setting provides every benefit of a paid YouTube subscription.

- Refresh the lists: use the platform-specific Content filtering path above, then reload YouTube.
- Check Shields: confirm Shields is enabled for the YouTube page.
- Review added filters: disable a recently enabled list or custom rule if the page stopped working after the change.
- Use stronger blocking selectively: Aggressive mode blocks first-party requests too, which may help with some requests but can also break site features.
Brave’s published policy describes its intended behavior, but it cannot establish a universal result across changing YouTube releases, regions, accounts, and sessions.
