Travelers to areas where plague occurs are generally at low risk, according to the CDC. Risk is more relevant when you encounter infected fleas, sick or dead animals, rodent-infested places, or someone with pneumonic plague at close range. Check current destination and local public-health guidance, since activity varies by place and time.
How plague exposure happens
Plague is caused by Yersinia pestis. Most human infections follow a bite from an infected flea or contact with infected animal tissue or fluids. Pneumonic plague can also spread through infectious droplets, ordinarily through direct, close contact with an infected person or animal. Simply visiting an endemic country or staying in an urban hotel is not equivalent to those specific exposures.

Before you travel, check local guidance
Review destination-specific health information and local public-health notices before departure, then check again during the trip if plans take you into rural or outdoor areas. Pay particular attention to advisories about plague cases or unusual rodent deaths. The general prevention guidance here does not establish current outbreak status for any particular destination.

Reduce flea exposure outdoors
For activities such as camping, hiking, or working outdoors where fleas may be present, CDC advises using repellent. Its guidance names DEET-containing repellent for skin and clothing, and permethrin for clothing. CDC also says 0.5% permethrin can be used to treat clothing and gear. Follow each product label: clothing treatments are not a substitute for skin-applied repellent, and neither approach guarantees protection from infection.
- Use a labeled repellent as directed and cover exposed skin with clothing where practical.
- Consider permethrin-treated clothing or gear for outdoor activities; apply it only as the label allows.
- Do not assume that a product intended for clothing or equipment is safe to apply to skin.
Avoid rodents and animal contact
Avoid buildings or sites with signs of rodent activity, including droppings and nesting material, and stay away from locations where sick or dead rodents have been seen or reported. Follow local instructions if an area is closed or authorities advise avoiding it.

Do not touch or handle sick or dead wildlife, and do not feed or pet wild or stray animals. If you find an animal carcass, ask local authorities how to report it or handle it safely; CDC directs disposal questions to local health departments. If animal contact cannot be avoided, use gloves.

Keep pets from roaming in areas where plague occurs, maintain flea control with veterinarian-guided measures, and avoid letting free-roaming pets sleep on beds. Pets can bring fleas into close contact with people.

Know when close contact matters
Plague is not spread by every casual encounter. The person-to-person route identified in CDC guidance is infectious droplets from pneumonic plague, generally requiring direct, close contact. Avoid close contact with someone suspected of having pneumonic plague and follow public-health instructions if such an exposure occurs.
Recognize symptoms and get medical care quickly
After possible exposure or travel to an area where plague occurs, seek medical care immediately if compatible symptoms develop. Tell the clinician where you traveled, the dates, any flea bites or animal contact, and whether you had close contact with someone who was ill. Prompt treatment matters.

- Bubonic plague: fever, headache, chills, weakness, and one or more painful, swollen lymph nodes. CDC gives an incubation period of 2–8 days for this form.
- Pneumonic plague: fever, headache, weakness, rapidly developing pneumonia, shortness of breath, chest pain, and cough. After inhalation, symptoms can begin as soon as one day after exposure.
Do not rely on preventive antibiotics or a traveler vaccine
Routine antibiotics are not recommended as a general precaution for travelers. CDC’s 1996 ACIP guidance describes short-term preventive antibiotics only for exceptionally high-risk exposure circumstances; because that guidance is dated, a clinician or public-health authority should assess any specific exposure using current advice.
