There is no proven way to prevent Alzheimer’s disease. Healthy habits and treatment of medical conditions may support brain and overall health, and some interventions have promising but inconclusive evidence for reducing certain risks. None can guarantee that you will avoid Alzheimer’s.
If you’re asking, “How can I reduce my risk of Alzheimer’s disease?”, focus on manageable health steps rather than a supplement, device, or brain-training program marketed as prevention. The World Health Organization’s 2026 dementia-risk-reduction guideline covers healthy behaviours, related health conditions, environmental exposures, and tailored combinations of interventions for adults without dementia, including people with mild cognitive impairment.

Can Alzheimer’s disease be prevented?
Not with any method proven to work. Alzheimer’s-related changes in the brain may begin years before symptoms, but that does not mean a person can predict whether the disease will develop or control it through lifestyle changes. Age cannot be changed, and family history, genes, environment, and lifestyle interact. The National Institute on Aging (NIA) notes that the APOE ε4 gene is associated with increased risk in some populations; having a genetic risk factor is not a certainty that you will develop Alzheimer’s.
The practical goal is to address health risks you can influence, for their established value to general health and possible value for brain health—not to promise Alzheimer’s prevention. Evidence also differs by outcome: a study may measure mild cognitive impairment (MCI), cognitive decline, dementia, or Alzheimer’s specifically. Those outcomes are related, but they are not interchangeable.

What does the evidence say about possible steps?
| Area | What the evidence supports | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Blood-pressure management | NIA describes evidence as promising but inconclusive. In SPRINT-MIND, intensive blood-pressure treatment reduced MCI risk compared with a standard target in adults aged 50 and older at high cardiovascular risk. | That a particular blood-pressure target prevents Alzheimer’s, or that it is appropriate for every person. |
| Physical activity | NIA cites increased physical activity among interventions with encouraging but inconclusive evidence for dementia-related outcomes. | A specific exercise routine or amount that prevents Alzheimer’s. |
| Cognitive training | NIA cites cognitive training as an area with encouraging but inconclusive evidence. | That commercial brain games or a particular app prevent Alzheimer’s. |
| Hearing care | NIH reporting says hearing aids appeared to reduce cognitive decline over three years among older adults with specific risk factors. | A universal benefit across all participants, or proof that hearing aids prevent Alzheimer’s. |
| Diet, sleep, tobacco, alcohol, social and mental engagement | These are relevant to health and are included in practical risk-reduction guidance or routine health management. | That any one diet, sleep practice, activity, or other behaviour is a proven Alzheimer’s preventive treatment. |
NIA’s summary of a 2017 National Academies review called evidence for blood-pressure management in people with hypertension, increased physical activity, and cognitive training “encouraging but inconclusive.” The review called for more trial evidence to determine whether these approaches prevent or delay Alzheimer’s, MCI, or cognitive decline.
Manage blood pressure and other health conditions with a clinician
Work with a healthcare professional to monitor and treat high blood pressure and other chronic conditions. NIA summarizes SPRINT-MIND, a trial involving more than 8,000 adults aged 50 and older at high cardiovascular risk. The trial compared an intensive systolic blood-pressure target below 120 mmHg with a standard target below 140 mmHg; the intensive-treatment group had significantly lower MCI risk, and brain scans showed slower buildup of white matter lesions.
Those figures describe a trial comparison, not a target to adopt on your own. NIA also reports mixed findings across observational studies of blood pressure and dementia risk, with more research needed on how age and cardiovascular risk affect the relationship. Do not change medication or aim for a lower blood-pressure number without advice from your clinician.

Bring questions about blood pressure, diabetes, medications, or other ongoing conditions to routine care. A clinician can weigh your overall health and risks when deciding what to monitor or treat.
Build regular physical activity into your routine
Physical activity is a reasonable part of a health-focused approach, but available evidence does not establish an Alzheimer’s-preventing exercise prescription. Choose activity suited to your health, mobility, and preferences. If you are inactive, have health concerns, or are unsure what is safe, ask a healthcare professional how to begin.
Eat a balanced diet rather than relying on a “brain” diet
A balanced diet supports general health, but no single diet is established as a way to prevent Alzheimer’s. The WHO’s 2019 guideline summary recommended a Mediterranean-like diet for risk reduction; that older recommendation should not be mistaken for a detailed account of the 2026 guideline. The evidence here does not support presenting any named diet as a guaranteed or proven preventive treatment.

Address hearing loss, sleep problems, and mood symptoms
Hearing
If you have trouble hearing, arrange an assessment and discuss treatment options. NIH reporting on a trial found that hearing aids appeared to reduce cognitive decline over three years in older adults with specific risk factors, but not in participants without those risk factors. That finding does not show that hearing aids prevent Alzheimer’s or benefit everyone in the same way; hearing care remains worthwhile on its own merits.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsSleep and mood
Seek professional advice for persistent sleep problems or mood symptoms. The available evidence does not establish that treating either one prevents Alzheimer’s, but these concerns deserve attention as part of your overall health.
Avoid smoking and harmful alcohol use
Avoid smoking and harmful alcohol use as part of protecting your health. These are sensible health steps, not proven Alzheimer’s-prevention treatments. If you want help changing tobacco or alcohol use, ask a healthcare professional about support suited to your circumstances.

Stay mentally and socially engaged without expecting a guarantee
Learning, hobbies, and social contact can be meaningful parts of life and healthy aging. They should not be sold as a proven way to prevent Alzheimer’s. The WHO’s 2019 guideline summary found insufficient evidence to recommend social activity specifically as a dementia-risk-reduction intervention; do not treat that older finding as a detailed statement of the 2026 guideline.
Likewise, the evidence cited here does not justify buying a brain-training app or device on the promise that it will prevent Alzheimer’s. Cognitive training appears in NIA’s summary of promising but inconclusive interventions, not as proof for any particular product.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Be cautious about supplements and prevention claims
No supplement, device, or treatment is established here as an Alzheimer’s preventive. The WHO’s 2019 guideline summary advised against certain vitamin and supplement combinations for dementia-risk reduction. Avoid starting supplements for this purpose based on marketing claims; discuss questions about supplements or medication interactions with a clinician.

Be especially wary of claims that a product “prevents,” “reverses,” or guarantees protection from Alzheimer’s. A health metric such as blood pressure can be useful to track as part of care, but a monitor is not a prevention device.
When to seek medical advice
Discuss persistent concerns about memory or thinking with a healthcare professional rather than trying to diagnose Alzheimer’s yourself. Also ask for help with high blood pressure, diabetes or other chronic conditions, hearing loss, sleep problems, mood symptoms, or medication questions. They can assess your situation and recommend appropriate next steps.
A family history or genetic risk factor may be a reason to ask questions, but it does not determine an individual outcome. A clinician can help put personal and family health information into context.

- Start with routine care. Ask a healthcare professional which health conditions and risk factors you should monitor or manage.
- Choose sustainable health habits. Build in physical activity, eat a balanced diet, avoid smoking and harmful alcohol use, and aim for adequate sleep.
- Address concerns rather than guessing. Arrange care for hearing loss, persistent sleep or mood problems, chronic conditions, or memory concerns.
- Judge claims by the outcome and evidence. Ask whether a study measured MCI, cognitive decline, dementia, or Alzheimer’s itself, and whether it tested a specific intervention in people like you.
These steps can support health without promising a result that current evidence cannot guarantee.
