How to reduce Windows Search Indexer’s high CPU or disk usage

Windows Search Indexer (SearchIndexer.exe) is usually busiest when it is building an index for the first time, processing a large batch of changed files, or rebuilding after a settings change. The safest way to reduce sustained CPU or disk usage is to shrink the search scope before rebuilding anything: use Classic search instead of Enhanced, exclude large folders you do not search, and change unnecessary full-text locations to properties-only indexing. Then rebuild the index if results are stale or the database is inconsistent.

A short burst can be normal; activity that continues for hours on an established installation usually points to an oversized index, a rapidly changing folder, an Outlook mailbox with millions of items, insufficient free space, or index corruption. The steps below apply to Windows 11 and Windows 10, with the differences called out.

What Windows Search Indexer is doing

Windows Search creates a catalog of file names, paths, properties and, when enabled for a file type, file contents. Search can then return matches without opening every file on the disk. The catalog is maintained in the background as files are created, edited, renamed or deleted.

Windows 11 and Windows 10 expose two scope modes. Classic indexes common user locations such as Documents, Pictures, Music and the desktop. Enhanced indexes the entire PC and normally consumes more CPU, disk and storage because it covers many more locations. Microsoft says first indexing can take up to a couple of hours; after that, the service normally processes only changed data. A large migration, software build, virtual-machine image or restore can therefore produce a legitimate temporary spike.

The objective is not to disable search blindly. It is to keep the locations and content types you actually search while removing high-churn data that constantly invalidates the catalog.

First determine whether the load is expected

Check the indexed-item count

Open Settings > Privacy & security > Searching Windows in Windows 11. In Windows 10, open Settings > Search > Searching Windows. The page reports the indexing status and item count. Microsoft’s support guidance describes these approximate planning ranges:

Indexed content What it generally means
Fewer than 30,000 items Typical user workload; persistent 100% usage deserves investigation.
Up to 300,000 items Common upper range for a power user; indexing can still be healthy if files are not changing constantly.
More than 400,000 items Performance issues may begin, especially on slower storage or when many files change.
Up to 1 million items The indexer may still process this volume, but resource problems or failures become more likely.
Outlook mailbox over 6 million items Microsoft warns that very large mail stores can degrade Windows Search performance.

These are Microsoft’s broad thresholds, not guarantees for every computer. Storage speed, available memory, file size, content filters and the rate of change all matter. If Outlook is installed, synchronised mail is indexed by default and can account for a surprisingly large share of the count.

Check whether the database itself is large

The search database is normally Windows.edb on Windows 10 or Windows.db on Windows 11, in C:ProgramDataMicrosoftSearchDataApplicationsWindows. In File Explorer, open the file’s Properties and inspect Size on disk, not just the ordinary Size value. Microsoft notes that sparse, compressed ESE/NTFS files can make Explorer’s Size figure misleading.

As a rule of thumb, Microsoft says the index is generally less than 10 percent of the content it indexes. The ratio can be much higher when the source contains many tiny files, source code or other text-heavy data. Keep more than 1 GB of free disk space when Windows reports that indexing lacks room; a nearly full system volume can make indexing slower and less reliable.

Reduce the search scope before doing anything disruptive

Scope changes are reversible and usually provide the quickest lasting improvement. They also reduce what Windows Search can find, so exclude only locations whose contents you do not need in Start or File Explorer search.

Switch Enhanced to Classic

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Choose Privacy & security > Searching Windows on Windows 11, or Search > Searching Windows on Windows 10.
  3. If Enhanced is selected, choose Classic.

Classic is the sensible default when you search your user files but not the whole operating system. Enhanced is appropriate when whole-PC search is genuinely important and the additional indexing cost is acceptable.

Exclude high-churn or disposable folders

  1. On the same Searching Windows page, select Add an excluded folder.
  2. Choose folders that are large, regenerated or constantly changing, such as build output, package caches, temporary workspaces, virtual-machine disks, downloaded archives or application caches.
  3. Repeat for each unnecessary location. Keep working folders, project documents and other places where you rely on instant search.

Excluding a folder prevents both its names and its contents from contributing to the Windows Search catalog. If you later need to search that location, remove it from the exclusion list and allow indexing to catch up.

Use Advanced indexing options for precise control

  1. From Searching Windows, open Advanced indexing options (Windows 10 may show Advanced Search Indexer Settings first).
  2. Select Modify.
  3. Clear locations that should not be indexed, then select OK.

This view is useful when a broad exclusion would remove too much. For example, you can keep a Documents library while removing a single generated subfolder.

Limit full-text indexing by file type

  1. In Advanced Indexing Options, select Advanced.
  2. Open the File Types tab.
  3. For extensions where you only need the name, path or basic metadata, choose Index Properties Only instead of indexing properties and file contents.
  4. Select OK to apply the change.

Properties-only indexing reduces database size and parsing work, but content searches for those extensions will no longer return text inside the files. Keep full content indexing for formats you routinely search inside, and use properties-only for bulky formats or code trees you locate by name.

Choose the least disruptive remedy

Remedy Immediate resource relief Search completeness Reversibility
Pause or wait for current indexing None, but avoids restarting work Preserved Fully reversible; progress resumes automatically
Switch Enhanced to Classic Usually lowers ongoing load by shrinking scope Whole-PC coverage is reduced Easy to undo in Settings
Exclude folders Reduces item count and change volume Excluded paths disappear from Windows Search Easy to undo
Properties-only file types Reduces parsing and database growth No full-text matches for selected extensions Easy to undo
Rebuild High CPU and disk use while it runs Restores a clean catalog after completion Reversible, but time-consuming
Reset or corruption recovery Disruptive and temporarily incomplete Search relevance can be reduced during recovery More difficult; use after ordinary fixes fail

This trade-off explains why deleting the database is not a first step. Narrowing scope addresses the cause; rebuilding then creates a smaller, cleaner catalog.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Rebuild the index after changing scope or when results are stale

Rebuild when searches omit files that should be present, return clearly stale results, or the index remains inconsistent after you have corrected its scope. A rebuild discards the existing catalog and scans the selected locations again, so high disk and CPU use during the process is expected.

Windows 11 path

  1. Open Settings > Privacy & security > Searching Windows.
  2. Select Advanced indexing options.
  3. Choose Advanced.
  4. On the Index Settings tab, select Rebuild, confirm, and close the dialogs.

Windows 10 path

  1. Open Settings > Search > Searching Windows.
  2. Select Advanced Search Indexer Settings.
  3. Choose Advanced.
  4. Select Rebuild on the Index Settings tab and confirm.

Microsoft advises allowing up to 24 hours for a complete rebuild, depending on the number and type of files and how busy the device is. Results can be incomplete while the scan is in progress. Start it when the computer can remain powered and relatively idle, preferably connected to AC power.

Status messages such as Indexing speed is reduced because of user activity, waiting for computer to become idle or a pause while on battery power indicate throttling rather than a failure. Leave the device unattended and plugged in when practical. Heavy foreground use, sleep and battery operation can extend the completion time.

Keep the indexer from repeatedly starting over

  • Finish large file moves before judging performance. Copying or restoring tens of thousands of files creates a legitimate backlog.
  • Keep volatile data out of the index. Build artifacts, caches and virtual disks can change continuously and force repeated updates.
  • Maintain free space. More than 1 GB free is Microsoft’s guidance when indexing reports insufficient space; additional headroom is helpful during a rebuild.
  • Install pending Windows updates and restart. Search components and their file filters are serviced through Windows Update.
  • Review Outlook scope. If a mailbox is unusually large, reducing the mail data included in Windows Search may be more effective than repeatedly rebuilding the entire index.

When high usage continues after scope changes

Run Microsoft’s Search and Indexing troubleshooter

Open the Windows troubleshooting controls and run the Search and Indexing troubleshooter. It checks common configuration and service conditions and may apply a supported correction. The exact entry point varies by Windows build, so use the Troubleshoot page in Settings and select the Search and Indexing option when it is offered.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Restart the search shell process

Microsoft documents restarting SearchUI.exe on Windows 10 and SearchHost.exe on Windows 11 as a troubleshooting step. Open Task Manager, locate the process for your Windows version, select it, and choose End task. Windows should start the search component again. This does not delete the index; it simply refreshes the user-interface process.

Use the supported reset script

For Windows 11 and Windows 10 version 1903 or later, Microsoft provides ResetWindowsSearchBox.ps1. The procedure requires administrator permission and may require temporarily changing the current user’s PowerShell execution policy so the script can run. Follow Microsoft’s documented reset procedure for the exact commands, run the script as instructed, and restore the previous execution-policy value afterward.

A reset can temporarily reduce result relevance while Windows rebuilds its search data. Treat it as a later step, after scope changes, updates, the troubleshooter and a normal rebuild have failed to resolve persistent behavior.

Do not delete search data casually

Manually deleting C:ProgramDataMicrosoftSearchData is a recovery action for a corrupted or unusable index, not a routine performance tweak. It forces Windows to recreate search data and can leave results incomplete until indexing finishes. Microsoft also warns that hard-disk failures can precede index-writing problems. If the index repeatedly becomes unusable, back up personal data and check the health of the storage device before attempting destructive recovery.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not edit the registry or remove database files merely because Windows.edb or Windows.db looks large. First reduce the scope, confirm the actual Size on disk, ensure free space, and rebuild through Advanced Indexing Options.

Practical playbooks for common symptoms

SearchIndexer.exe reaches 100% disk after copying a large folder

  1. Wait long enough for the initial backlog to shrink; a large migration can legitimately keep the indexer busy.
  2. Check the item count and identify whether the copied folder contains generated or disposable files.
  3. Exclude that folder or switch its file types to properties-only if you do not search inside them.
  4. Rebuild only after the scope is correct, and allow up to 24 hours for completion.

The computer is always busy even though you rarely search

  1. Check whether Enhanced mode is indexing the entire PC.
  2. Switch to Classic and remove caches, build output, virtual-machine files and other high-churn locations.
  3. Inspect Outlook’s contribution if it is installed and synchronising a large mailbox.
  4. Restart Windows, install updates and observe whether the load settles before considering a reset.

Search misses files immediately after a rebuild

Incomplete results are normal while the rebuild is running. Check the status message and item count, keep the computer powered and idle, and test again after indexing finishes. If files remain absent, verify that their parent folders are selected under Modify and that their extensions are not excluded or set to a filter that cannot read their contents.

The index reports insufficient disk space

  1. Free space on the Windows volume, aiming for more than 1 GB at minimum.
  2. Reduce the indexed locations and change unnecessary full-text extensions to properties-only.
  3. Rebuild after the scope and storage conditions are corrected.

Recommended order of operations

  1. Confirm whether the spike follows first indexing, a rebuild or a large file change.
  2. Check indexed-item count, Outlook size and available disk space.
  3. Switch Enhanced to Classic unless whole-PC search is required.
  4. Exclude large, disposable or rapidly changing folders.
  5. Use Advanced > File Types to select properties-only indexing where content search is unnecessary.
  6. Install Windows updates and restart.
  7. Rebuild through Advanced Indexing Options if the catalog is stale or inconsistent.
  8. Run the Search and Indexing troubleshooter and restart SearchUI.exe or SearchHost.exe if load persists.
  9. Use Microsoft’s reset script only when the supported, less disruptive steps have not solved the problem.
  10. Reserve deletion of the Search Data folder for a suspected corrupted index, after backing up data and considering possible disk failure.
