One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchThe most reliable way to cut the cost of a nonstop prerecorded YouTube stream is to measure what your VPS actually bills, then reduce the stream’s outgoing bitrate or remove unnecessary compute—without sacrificing the picture or recovery process. A continuous stream can use substantial outbound data: Space-Node estimates about 1 TB per month for its 2.5 Mbps example, but your total depends on bitrate, operating hours and your provider’s billing rules. There is no universal savings figure; start with your invoice and workload.
Find the costs you can actually change
A VPS advertised at a low monthly price may still cost more than expected once outbound transfer, storage or overages are included. Before changing anything, make a baseline from your current plan and stream.
- Invoice: Record the monthly charge, billing region, included transfer, overage rate, storage charges and any taxes or add-ons.
- Plan: Note CPU, RAM, disk capacity, region, support terms and any contract or renewal conditions.
- Stream: Measure outgoing video and audio bitrate, resolution, frame rate and hours streamed each month.
- Workload: Record CPU, RAM and network use while the stream is running, including what happens during a reconnect.
Check how your host defines and bills transfer. Some plans may count traffic differently, so an estimate based on bitrate is a planning figure, not a substitute for the provider’s metering details.
Estimate monthly outbound data
For a rough decimal estimate, multiply the aggregate outgoing bitrate in megabits per second by the number of seconds streamed, then divide by 8,000,000 to get decimal terabytes. For a continuous 30-day month, that is approximately bitrate in Mbps × 0.324 TB. Include audio in the aggregate bitrate; allow for protocol overhead and differences in billing measurement.

For example, at 2.5 Mbps for 30 days, the calculation gives about 0.81 decimal TB before overhead. Space-Node’s 2026 VPS guide estimates about 1 TB/month for its 2.5 Mbps example. That is the provider’s estimate, not a universal bill: actual transfer depends on the stream, schedule and provider’s accounting.
Reduce bitrate only as far as the content allows
Lower bitrate can reduce outbound transfer directly. The right target is the lowest profile that remains clear for your source material and stable at YouTube ingest—not simply the smallest number in a table. YouTube transcodes live input into multiple output formats for different viewers, so you do not need to ingest at the maximum resolution merely because some viewers have high-resolution screens.
YouTube’s current encoder guidance gives the following bitrate ranges. These are published settings, not a guarantee that the minimum will look good for every video.

Check YouTube’s live encoder settings for its current recommendations and supported formats. YouTube advises constant bitrate (CBR), a recommended two-second keyframe interval (not exceeding four seconds), and RTMP or RTMPS; it recommends RTMPS for encryption. Follow the encoder guidance for the specific codec and frame rate you use.
Test before changing the always-on stream
- Save the current resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, keyframe interval and encoder configuration as a rollback profile.
- Choose one lower profile to test, using YouTube’s published range as a boundary rather than assuming its minimum is suitable.
- Test representative sections of the actual video, including motion, fine detail and audio. A static scene may tolerate a lower bitrate than a fast-moving or detailed one.
- Check YouTube Live Control Room’s stream health while testing. YouTube says it can detect encoder settings automatically and recommends testing with audio and motion similar to the real broadcast.
- Keep the new profile only if picture quality and ingest remain acceptable. If the stream degrades or becomes unstable, return to the saved profile.
Do not assume a lower resolution is always the best saving. Compare the resulting transfer reduction with the quality your viewers need and the stream’s stability.
Remove compute you do not need
A prerecorded file loop may not need a graphical desktop or a full OBS production. Space-Node’s 2026 guide demonstrates looping a file with command-line FFmpeg without a desktop environment. Its resource table is vendor guidance, not a controlled benchmark, so measure your own VPS rather than treating its CPU or RAM figures as universal sizing rules.

When a headless FFmpeg workflow may fit
- The broadcast is a straightforward loop or playlist of prerecorded files.
- You do not need scene switching, a graphical interface, live overlays or hands-on intervention.
- You can monitor the process and arrange restart or reconnect behavior.
When OBS or a GUI still makes sense
- You rely on scenes, overlays, transitions or other production features.
- You need to intervene live or manage a more complex set of sources.
- Your workflow depends on a graphical interface that you cannot reasonably replace.
Compare actual CPU and RAM use, maintenance and recovery—not just whether one program starts successfully. A desktop environment can be unnecessary overhead for a simple file loop, but removing it is not a saving if the resulting workflow is harder to operate reliably.
Check whether the VPS is re-encoding
Encoding can use significant CPU, but do not switch to stream copy just to reduce CPU without validating the real files and ingest path. Container and codec compatibility, timestamps, audio behavior and YouTube ingestion all matter. Compare the current process with a tested alternative on your own media; retain re-encoding if it is necessary for a compatible, stable stream.
Compare VPS plans by total bill, not headline price
Once you know your stream profile and workload, compare plans against the same monthly stream hours and requirements. A cheaper CPU plan can be a poor choice if it has too little transfer included or expensive overages.

| Cost or requirement | What to compare |
|---|---|
| Monthly charge | Recurring price for the needed plan and region; check renewal and contract terms. |
| Outbound transfer | Included allowance, billing definition, metering period and overage rate. |
| Compute | CPU and RAM under your actual encoding or playback workload. |
| Storage | Capacity and any charges for keeping the media on the VPS. |
| Operations | Support, reliability terms, restart controls and the time needed to maintain the setup. |
There is no sound way to name a universally cheapest VPS without your region, usage, transfer bill and reliability requirements. Recheck current terms directly with providers before moving; advertised entry prices and allowances can change.

A managed cloud playout service can remove the VPS from the workflow, but it is not automatically cheaper. Compare the full cost for the same stream hours, media storage, number of concurrent channels and recovery needs. Include migration and operator time as well as the service’s current limits and billing terms. Vendor descriptions establish what a service says it offers, not that it will cost less for your use.
For keeping a prerecorded YouTube stream running, StreamNeo is the first cloud option to consider: it runs the uploaded video from the cloud at any quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, and the first day is free.

Other cloud services describe continuous playback and playlist management, but check their current trial allowances, stream-hour limits, storage limits, concurrency and uptime terms before comparing them with a VPS. Those limits can change, and a service’s claims are not a guarantee that it is the right or lowest-cost option for your channel.
Keep the lower-cost setup recoverable
A saving that creates frequent outages is a false economy. YouTube recommends testing the stream and monitoring its health. Google recommends RTMPS; its developer documentation, last updated 2026-09-14 UTC, describes it as RTMP carried through SSL and specifies a valid YouTube RTMPS endpoint, port 443 and SNI handling for integrations. See Google’s RTMPS ingestion guidance when configuring an integration.
- Keep a known-good encoder profile and a copy of the current configuration.
- Monitor both the process on the VPS and stream health in YouTube Live Control Room.
- Test restart and reconnect behavior rather than assuming a process will recover correctly.
- After changing bitrate, software or host, observe the stream through the conditions that previously caused problems.
Troubleshoot common cost-cutting problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or change |
|---|---|---|
| Transfer charges are higher than expected | The actual bitrate or operating hours exceed the estimate, or the host counts traffic differently. | Recheck aggregate outgoing bitrate, actual hours, provider metering and overage rates. Compare a tested lower profile with your current one. |
| Picture looks poor after lowering bitrate | The content has more motion or detail than the new profile can represent acceptably. | Test representative sections and move up to a higher supported bitrate or resolution if needed. |
| Stream health worsens after a settings change | The profile may not suit the codec, frame rate, network or ingest configuration. | Check YouTube’s encoder recommendations, CBR and keyframe interval; restore the known-good profile while diagnosing. |
| CPU or RAM stays high on the VPS | The stream may be re-encoding, or the workflow may include an unnecessary desktop or other processes. | Measure the workload; compare a headless file-loop workflow if production features are not needed. Validate compatibility before attempting stream copy. |
| Stream stops and does not resume | The process, network connection or restart configuration may not recover from the failure. | Check process logs and YouTube stream health, then test the restart and reconnect path before relying on it unattended. |
| A replacement plan appears cheaper but the monthly total rises | Transfer overages, storage or operational needs were omitted from the comparison. | Recalculate using the same region, hours, media storage, concurrency and reliability needs, including transfer charges and maintenance time. |
