Start by finding the sound path, not by buying a product. Traffic noise may be entering through a worn window seal, a gap between the frame and wall, a trickle vent, a door, or another part of the façade. A repair helps only when it closes the path that is actually transmitting the noise. Inspect the closed window and surrounding wall, repair confirmed gaps with compatible materials, and then consider professionally fitted secondary glazing inside the existing window. Keep required ventilation working throughout: blocking vents can create stale air, condensation and mould.
What to do first: trace the route the noise is taking
A window can look shut yet still leak sound through its perimeter, frame junctions or ventilation openings. Conversely, the glass may be performing reasonably while traffic noise enters through a door, wall penetration or roof-level vent. Treat the room as a complete façade system rather than assuming the pane is the only weak point.

Use a simple closed-window inspection
- Close and latch the window exactly as you normally do. Check that the sash or casement pulls evenly against its seals and that handles, locks and hinges are not loose.
- In daylight, look for a continuous gap, crushed gasket, split rubber, missing seal or visible daylight around the perimeter. A strip of tissue held near the closed edge on a windy day can reveal moving air; do not put fingers, flames or smoke near a window or vent.
- Listen at the corners, lock side, sill and head of the frame. A noticeably louder point suggests an air path, but silence at one point does not prove that the whole assembly is airtight.
- Inspect the frame-to-wall junction, architrave and sill for cracks or failed sealant. Concealed gaps may require a building professional to expose and diagnose safely.
- Note every vent, air brick, cable penetration, letter opening and nearby door. If the noise changes when an internal door is opened or a vent is covered temporarily by a removable hand-held barrier, that is a clue about the route—not permission to seal the opening permanently.
YourHome’s Noise control guidance stresses that sound can pass through the weakest part of a whole element. It also distinguishes between absorption inside a room and blocking sound before it enters. This is why a wall panel can reduce echo while leaving road noise almost unchanged.

Separate outside noise from room reflections
Traffic heard as a distinct, directional rumble usually points to transmission through the façade. A hard, bare room can then make the same noise seem louder by reflecting it. Soft furnishings, rugs and bookshelves can improve that reflected component, but they are secondary measures. They do not substitute for closing an air leak or upgrading the window assembly.

Repair confirmed gaps before changing the window system
Window perimeter seals
The South Australian Department for Infrastructure and Transport’s Noise Mitigation Fact Sheet: A Guide to Home Owners says acoustic seals around a window perimeter can help by making a closed window tight. The appropriate profile depends on the window’s design and the size and shape of the gap. A replacement seal must compress correctly when the window closes, remain durable in its environment and allow the sash to operate normally.
- Identify the existing seal profile and material before ordering a replacement; a generic strip may be too thick to latch or too thin to close the leak.
- Clean the contact surfaces and remove failed material according to the seal manufacturer’s instructions.
- Fit the seal continuously around the intended perimeter, with neat joints and no folds at corners.
- Close and reopen the window several times. Confirm that locks engage without force and that drainage channels remain open.
- Recheck the suspected leak in different weather. A seal that works on one edge but leaves a gap at a hinge, meeting rail or corner is not a complete repair.
Do not use sealant or adhesive to immobilise a moving sash, cover drainage slots or close a purpose-designed ventilation opening. Water must be able to drain from the frame, and some rooms require background ventilation under local rules.
Frame-to-wall junctions
A crack between the installed frame and the surrounding wall can bypass an otherwise sound window. Once an inspection confirms that route, use a building sealant and backing arrangement suitable for the joint, substrate and expected movement. The correct repair is a building-detail question, not simply a matter of adding more foam tape. If the gap is hidden behind trim, extensive, damp or associated with movement, obtain an assessment from a qualified builder or window professional.
Seal penetrations for pipes, cables and vents only when they are not required for safety or ventilation, and only with materials compatible with the construction. Fire-rated, moisture-resistant or flexible products may be required in particular locations. A visible crack can be easy to fill; a concealed path can connect several rooms and defeat a local patch.
Doors and other openings
Check external doors, balcony doors, letter openings, extractor grilles and service penetrations before paying for window work. A worn door sweep or an unsealed threshold can admit more sound than a small window-edge leak. Repair the identified opening while preserving any required air-transfer, fire-safety and drainage functions.

When secondary glazing is the practical retrofit
Secondary glazing adds a separate glazed pane in its own frame on the room side of the existing window. The original window stays in place, so the approach can be useful when the external frame is sound, replacement is restricted, or the owner wants a reversible internal intervention. The added panel can normally be opened or removed for cleaning and, depending on its design, ventilation.
Why the cavity and installation matter
The space between the original and secondary panes, the airtightness of both frames, the pane construction and the way the panel meets the surrounding wall all influence performance. Australian government-supported Glazing guidance notes that thicker or laminated glass and a larger air gap can help with lower-frequency sound such as traffic. Those factors interact with the existing window and the rest of the façade; there is no universal reduction figure that applies to every home.

A sample may not represent leakage at the frame, the cavity dimensions, the seals, or flanking paths through the wall. The UK Department for Transport’s Noise insulation scheme booklet describes secondary-glazing arrangements and example insulation measures, but its examples should not be read as a guaranteed result for a different building.
Questions to put in a quotation
- What existing window condition and measurements does the proposal assume?
- What pane type, thickness, frame, seals and cavity are specified?
- Is the quoted performance for the complete installed assembly, and under what test or classification?
- How will the panel open for cleaning, emergency access and any required ventilation?
- How will condensation risk be assessed on both sides of the cavity?
- Which wall, sill and reveal details will be sealed, and how will drainage be preserved?
- What maintenance is needed for hinges, seals and operating hardware?
Condensation and access checks
An additional interior pane changes surface temperatures and air movement around the original window. Before installation, ask how the design manages condensation in the cavity and on room-facing surfaces, particularly in bedrooms, kitchens and bathrooms. Retain access to the original window where occupants need to clean it, operate it or reach an escape opening. A panel that cannot be opened may create a practical or safety problem even if it attenuates sound.
Compare the main approaches
| Option | Best fit | What to verify | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Compatible perimeter-seal repair | A leak is visible or detectable around a closed window | Correct profile, compression, durability, operation and unobstructed drainage | Does not stop sound passing through the glass or another path |
| Frame-to-wall sealing | Inspection identifies an air path around the installed frame | Suitable building sealant, movement tolerance, moisture detail and professional access to concealed joints | A local patch cannot solve a different façade route |
| Secondary glazing | The existing window can remain and a more substantial internal retrofit is wanted | Complete-system performance, pane, cavity, airtightness, condensation, access and ventilation | Requires careful design; no universal decibel promise applies |
| Lined curtains or blinds with pelmets | Light, privacy and thermal comfort are also priorities | Close fit at the opening and sensible operation | Evidence here does not establish strong stand-alone traffic-noise blocking |
| Noise-attenuating ventilation | Windows stay closed while rooms still need background air | Airflow, attenuation, indoor-air quality, maintenance and local code compliance | Must be designed for the room and jurisdiction |
| Door or other façade sealing | The inspection finds the weak point outside the window | Correct envelope, fire, drainage and ventilation treatment | Window products will not fix an unrelated opening |
Compare proposals using five questions: Was the path diagnosed? Is the stated performance for the complete installed system? Does the solution preserve healthy air and moisture control? Is it compatible with the frame and building? What cost, maintenance and reversibility trade-offs apply? Official guidance reviewed for this subject does not provide a universal price comparison or guaranteed reduction for a particular home.

Traffic’s low-frequency rumble: why glass details matter
Road traffic contains low-frequency components that can be harder to attenuate than a sharp, high-pitched sound. The Glazing guidance from YourHome explains that thickness, lamination and the size of the air gap influence this part of the spectrum. In practice, the best combination depends on the existing pane, secondary pane (if used), frame seals and the surrounding wall.

Laminated glass has a flexible interlayer that can change how the pane responds to sound, while a thicker pane and a properly designed cavity alter the assembly’s behaviour. These are design variables, not a shopping checklist that guarantees a particular result. Request an assessment of the actual façade and a written description of the proposed assembly. Be wary of a claim based only on the nominal glass thickness or a laboratory value detached from installation details.
Keep ventilation, indoor air and moisture under control
Noise reduction must not create a health or building problem. UK government guidance in Approved Document F, Volume 1: Dwellings — frequently asked questions recommends noise-attenuating background ventilators where a noisy façade needs to remain closed. Depending on the dwelling and design, ventilation from a quieter side may also be possible. These are jurisdiction-specific recommendations; local building rules and the home’s existing system take precedence.
The Existing home ventilation guide explains that ventilation dilutes pollutants generated indoors and that poorly ventilated homes face increased mould and condensation risk. Cooking, bathing, drying clothes and normal occupancy add moisture. If a room feels stuffy after windows are kept closed, or if water appears on cold surfaces, investigate airflow rather than simply adding more sealant.
Do not seal required vents
- Do not permanently cover trickle vents, air bricks, combustion-air openings or other required ventilation routes to make a room quieter.
- Ask a qualified ventilation professional whether an attenuating vent, ducted supply, extract upgrade or quieter-side arrangement suits the property.
- Confirm the proposed airflow rate, noise performance, filters, cleaning access and power requirements.
- Check how any change interacts with gas appliances, bathrooms, kitchens, fire doors and local regulations.
A removable test or temporary closure can help diagnose a path, but it is not a finished remedy. Restore the opening after the test and obtain a compliant design before making a permanent change.

What curtains, blinds and room treatments can—and cannot—do
Australian government energy guidance recommends close-fitting lined curtains or blinds with pelmets for thermal comfort. A close fit can also reduce drafts and soften reflected sound inside the room. However, the guidance reviewed here does not substantiate a promise that curtains alone will meaningfully block traffic noise entering through a window.
Use these treatments as a comfort layer: fit them close to the reveal, cover the opening fully when traffic is loud, and choose operation that does not interfere with a secondary-glazing panel or emergency access. Rugs, upholstered furniture and bookshelves can reduce reverberation. They are useful when the remaining problem is reflected noise, but they do not seal the façade.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A practical decision sequence
- Map the noise. Note time of day, traffic type, room, weather and whether the sound is strongest at the window, door, vent or wall junction.
- Inspect without dismantling hazardous components. Check latches, seals, visible cracks, vents, drainage slots and nearby openings.
- Repair only confirmed gaps. Replace a compatible perimeter seal or have a frame-to-wall joint repaired with an appropriate building sealant. Keep drainage and required ventilation open.
- Reassess the room. Close the repaired window, compare the suspected location with other façade points and listen at the same traffic periods. If the dominant path moved, address the newly identified weak point rather than repeating the first repair.
- Obtain a secondary-glazing proposal if the frame can stay. Give the installer measurements, photos of seals and vents, and information about condensation, access and escape requirements.
- Specify ventilation alongside the noise work. Ask how background air will be supplied or extracted when the noisy façade remains closed.
- Add comfort treatments last. Install close-fitting lined coverings and room absorption for privacy, temperature and reverberation after envelope defects and ventilation have been dealt with.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Buying foam tape before diagnosing the gap
Foam tape can be incompatible with a window profile, fail under weather exposure or prevent the lock from engaging. It also cannot stop sound through glass or a vent. Match the seal to the window and verify operation after fitting.
Assuming thicker glass solves every traffic problem
Low-frequency traffic, frame leakage and flanking through the wall can remain after a pane change. Evaluate the complete assembly and installation rather than a single glass specification.

Expecting curtains to provide soundproofing
Curtains can improve thermal and visual comfort and reduce reflections. Treat any noise benefit as supplementary unless a product’s complete, relevant test evidence supports more.
Accepting a generic decibel guarantee
No universal reduction is established for this home-improvement scenario. Ask what was measured, for which assembly, under what conditions and whether installation details match your property.
When to request an acoustic or building assessment
Get site-specific help when the noise remains severe after obvious gaps are repaired, when several façade elements are involved, when a concealed cavity or structural crack is suspected, or when planning secondary glazing in a room with condensation or escape constraints. An acoustic consultant can identify transmission paths and specify a complete treatment; a window or building professional can verify seals, junctions, drainage and installation feasibility. Request a written proposal that separates diagnosed causes, proposed work, ventilation provisions and any measured or tested performance.
Keep records of the original condition, repairs, photographs, product profiles, installer assumptions and post-work observations. This makes it easier to identify whether a remaining problem is airborne transmission through the window, flanking through the wall, or room reverberation.
Bottom line for a no-window-replacement retrofit
Inspect first, repair verified perimeter or frame gaps with compatible materials, and preserve every required ventilation route. If the existing frame is sound but traffic remains intrusive, compare an internally fitted secondary-glazing system on the basis of the complete installed assembly, cavity, seals, condensation control and access. Use lined curtains and soft furnishings for comfort and reflections, not as a substitute for façade work. The right sequence is diagnosis, targeted envelope repair, ventilation planning and then a properly specified retrofit—not a promise of one product that “soundproofs” every window.
