Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →The fastest way to stop an AI coding assistant from burning through tokens is to control what it sees and how long it stays active: give it a narrowly defined task, point to specific files or symbols, choose a model tier that fits the work, keep instruction files short, load tools only when needed, and reset or compact stale sessions. Add a per-session budget and watch usage so an open-ended debugging loop cannot consume your allowance unnoticed.
Where token overuse comes from
Token consumption is usually a workflow problem rather than a single bad prompt. Four drivers account for most avoidable usage:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
| Driver | What happens | Controlling action |
|---|---|---|
| Repeated context | Earlier instructions, pasted files, tool schemas and conversation history are sent again on later turns. | Reference paths and symbols, trim pasted material, and start a fresh task when the subject changes. |
| Mixed-topic sessions | A thread that moves from a build failure to documentation, then to an unrelated feature keeps all three problems in context. | Split research, planning and implementation into separate sessions. |
| Expensive model choices | A high-reasoning model spends more allowance on routine edits that do not need deep analysis. | Route mechanical work to a lightweight model and reserve the strongest model for architecture and difficult debugging. |
| Unused tools | Every enabled extension or MCP tool contributes its name, description and parameter schema to the model context. | Enable only tools relevant to the current task, or use on-demand tool search where supported. |
These causes interact. A long session with a large repository preamble and many tool definitions can be costly even when each individual request looks small. The goal is not to reduce useful reasoning; it is to prevent irrelevant material from being charged repeatedly.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsUse a bounded task brief before you open the agent
Start each task with a short brief that tells the assistant exactly what success looks like. Include the change, the allowed scope, constraints and the output you want. For example:

Task: Fix the retry bug in src/http/retry.ts.
Scope: src/http/retry.ts and tests/http/retry.test.ts only.
Success: preserve the public API, add a regression test, and run the existing test command.
Output: explain the cause, show the patch, and report test results.
This format prevents an agent from interpreting “improve retries” as permission to scan or refactor an entire repository. If the task has several genuinely different phases, make those phases explicit:
- Research: identify the relevant code path and constraints.
- Plan: propose a minimal change and tests; do not edit files.
- Implementation: apply the approved change in a new or deliberately continued session.
- Verification: run deterministic tests and linters, then inspect the diff.
GitHub recommends separating these phases and starting a new session between them so irrelevant context does not carry forward. The practice also makes it easier to stop after planning instead of paying for an implementation attempt that you do not need.
Send less context, but make it more precise
Point to paths and symbols
Give a file path, class, function or line range instead of pasting an entire file. Ask the assistant to open the named location and its immediate callers or tests. If you already know the suspected code path, state it; a targeted search is cheaper than a broad repository scan.
Trim logs and stack traces
Keep the relevant 20–30 lines around the first error, plus the command that produced it and any configuration needed to interpret it. Remove repeated frames, successful startup output, downloaded assets and secrets. For a large dump, save it on disk and provide the path so the assistant can search it selectively rather than carrying the whole text through every turn.
Use a project map
A concise map of major directories, build commands and ownership boundaries can replace repeated orientation requests. Tell the assistant which directories are out of scope. This is especially useful in monorepos, where a request to “fix the failing test” otherwise invites an expensive scan of unrelated packages.
Ask for bounded responses
Specify the desired output: a patch, a five-bullet diagnosis, a test command and its result, or a decision between two options. Requesting a complete rewrite, exhaustive explanation and implementation in one turn creates unnecessary output and often triggers additional corrective turns.

Match model effort to the job
Model routing is a practical budget control. Use the least capable model that can reliably complete the task, then escalate only when evidence shows that it cannot.
| Work type | Suitable tier | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| Mechanical | Lightweight | Renaming a symbol, updating boilerplate, changing log text, formatting, or explaining a small, well-isolated function. |
| Routine engineering | Mid-tier | Most features, test additions, known bugs, ordinary refactors and API integrations with clear requirements. |
| High uncertainty | Most capable reasoning model | Architecture decisions, cross-cutting refactors, concurrency failures, security-sensitive behavior and debugging with conflicting evidence. |
Escalate with a specific reason: “The lightweight model produced two failing tests; analyze the interaction between the cache lock and cancellation.” Do not leave every task on the strongest model by default.
In GitHub Copilot, select the model before a long task when cache reuse matters. GitHub lists model switches, reasoning changes, context-size changes and tool changes among events that can invalidate cached context. Switching halfway through can therefore cost more than the apparent difference between two individual responses.
Keep repository instruction files short and maintained
Instruction files are useful because they prevent repeated explanations, but their contents are loaded again and again. Keep only rules that are both important and recurring:
- Required build, test and lint commands.
- Directory boundaries and generated-file rules.
- Language, framework and API conventions that are not obvious from the code.
- Definition-of-done checks, such as required tests or migration steps.
- Known corrections that the assistant repeatedly gets wrong.
Remove generic advice, obsolete commands and duplicated documentation. Keep a repository map in AGENTS.md, .github/copilot-instructions.md or CLAUDE.md, depending on the assistant you use. Anthropic recommends keeping CLAUDE.md under roughly 200 lines; that is a useful ceiling for any always-loaded instruction file, not a target to fill.

Review these files when the build system, directory layout or team conventions change. A stale instruction can cause failed edits and extra repair turns, defeating the savings from having a shorter prompt.

Reduce tool-definition overhead
Tool access consumes context before the assistant invokes a tool. An MCP server or extension contributes a tool name, description and parameter schema, and a large collection can crowd out the code and error details you actually need. Visual Studio Code describes tool search as a way to load heavier schemas on demand, leaving more context for the coding task; its explanation is available in the VS Code token-efficiency article.
- Enable repository, issue-tracker or deployment tools only for tasks that use them.
- Prefer one narrowly scoped tool over several overlapping tools.
- Use on-demand search or deferred loading when your client supports it.
- Disable experimental integrations while measuring a problem; otherwise their schemas obscure the baseline.
This does not mean removing tools permanently. Treat the enabled tool set as part of the task brief: code review may need a repository tool, while a local rename usually does not.
Preserve cache reuse and reset stale history
Cached input is often much cheaper than uncached input. Visual Studio Code reports that, for most OpenAI models supporting cached-input pricing, uncached input tokens cost 10 times as much as cached input tokens. Keep the repeated prefix stable: avoid rewriting the same instructions, changing tools or switching models during a long run unless the benefit is clear.
PC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteCache behavior is provider- and model-specific, so treat the figure as the VS Code description for supported OpenAI models rather than a universal rate. The same article explains why a lean context window leaves more room and budget for the actual code task.
Compact when the task is still the same
If a Copilot CLI thread must continue but has grown large, run /compact to summarize its history and shrink the context window, as documented by GitHub. Continue only if the compacted summary still contains the requirements, current hypothesis and next verification step; otherwise start a clean phase and provide a short handoff.
Clear when the task changes
For an unrelated Claude Code task, use /clear rather than carrying the old conversation forward. Use /compact when the work is related and you need a summary instead of a full reset. Anthropic notes that every previous message is resent on every turn and that anything pasted remains in context for the rest of the session; this is why a three-problem thread keeps charging for all three problems.

Keep a stable handoff
Before resetting, write a compact handoff containing the objective, files changed, current failing command, observed error and next action. Do not copy the whole transcript. A five-line handoff preserves the decision-relevant state without preserving the noise.
Set limits before an autonomous run
Budget controls turn an unexpected loop into a recoverable stop. Before starting an agent task:
- Set the smallest per-session or task credit limit that leaves room for verification.
- Define a stopping condition, such as “after two failed repair attempts, report the blocker.”
- Require tests or a diff review before allowing further edits.
- Check the usage view during long runs rather than waiting for an account-wide limit.
GitHub documents session limits for Copilot AI-credit tasks and provides /context and /chronicle cost-tips in supported environments. In Codex, check the usage dashboard or run /status to see allowance and reset information. Exact controls and labels vary by client and can change, so use the current product documentation for your account.
Understand the published credit figures before budgeting
GitHub’s individual-plan billing page states that one AI credit equals $0.01 USD. The same published table, accessed October 16, 2026, lists these monthly allowances:
| Plan | Published monthly price | Total monthly AI credits |
|---|---|---|
| Pro | $10 per month | 1,500 |
| Pro+ | $39 per month | 7,000 |
| Max | $100 per month | 20,000 |
These are volatile plan values, not a promise that every account or region has the same terms. Verify the current allowance and billing rules in GitHub’s individual usage-based billing documentation before setting a team policy. The optimization guidance is at GitHub’s AI-usage efficiency page.

Measure the causes instead of guessing
Track enough information to identify which lever is working:
Best Value
- Task type and selected model tier.
- Whether the session was new, compacted or continued after a model or tool change.
- Approximate input size: pasted lines, log lines and number of files in scope.
- Enabled tools and whether each one was actually invoked.
- Credits or tokens consumed, successful test result and number of repair turns.
Look for patterns over several comparable tasks. A single large refactor is not a benchmark for a rename, and the available sources describe mechanisms rather than a universal percentage reduction. Keep deterministic tests and linters in the loop: catching a mistake locally is cheaper than asking the assistant for another exploratory repair.
Troubleshoot common overuse symptoms
The assistant keeps rereading the repository
Replace a broad request with a path-and-symbol brief, add explicit out-of-scope directories, and ask for a project-map update if orientation is genuinely missing. If the repository map is already in an instruction file, remove duplicate copies from the prompt.
Each reply gets longer and less relevant
Stop the current thread, request a short handoff, then compact or clear it according to whether the task remains the same. Require a fixed output format such as diagnosis, patch and test command.
Costs jump after adding an integration
Temporarily disable unrelated MCP servers and extensions, record the baseline, then re-enable only the tool required for the task. If on-demand tool search is available, use it instead of loading every schema at startup.
The agent burns credits repairing its own changes
Reduce the edit scope, ask for a plan before implementation, and enforce the stopping condition after repeated failures. Run the test or linter yourself between turns so the next request contains the exact new failure rather than a vague “try again.”
A model switch makes the next turn unusually expensive
Assume the switch invalidated reusable context. Either finish the current bounded task with the selected model or start a fresh session with a concise handoff and the smallest relevant context.
A practical operating checklist
- Write one task, one scope and one success test.
- Reference files, symbols and short error excerpts instead of pasting whole artifacts.
- Separate research, planning, implementation and verification when they are distinct activities.
- Choose lightweight, mid-tier or high-reasoning models according to uncertainty.
- Keep always-loaded instruction files concise; remove stale rules.
- Enable only task-relevant tools and defer heavy schemas when possible.
- Keep repeated prefixes stable to preserve cache reuse.
- Compact a long related thread; clear an unrelated one.
- Set a session limit and a maximum number of repair attempts.
- Inspect usage and test results before allowing the agent to continue.
The bottom line
Token control comes from disciplined context management: narrow the task, send only decision-relevant code and logs, route work to an appropriate model, keep instructions and tools lean, preserve cache-friendly continuity, and reset sessions when their history stops helping. Pair those habits with visible usage limits and deterministic verification, and an assistant can spend its budget on the code that matters instead of repeatedly carrying irrelevant conversation.
