You can lower the chance of catching or spreading COVID-19 at home by layering precautions: stay up to date with vaccination, improve indoor air, practise good hygiene, and use extra separation and masking when someone has respiratory symptoms. None of these steps guarantees prevention. If someone becomes sick, stay home and away from household members who are not sick while symptoms are present, and follow current CDC advice on when to resume normal activities.
Build protection into everyday home life
CDC identifies staying up to date with COVID-19 vaccination, good hygiene and cleaner air as core prevention strategies. Masks and distance can add protection when risk is higher, such as when someone is ill or visitors are present. These measures work as layers rather than guarantees: use the ones that fit your household and situation. See the CDC’s current COVID-19 prevention guidance.

- Vaccination: Follow current recommendations for staying up to date.
- Hygiene: Practise good hygiene as part of routine prevention.
- Cleaner air: Bring in outdoor air, filter indoor air, or move gatherings outdoors when practical.
- Extra precautions when needed: Add distance and a well-fitting mask or respirator when someone is sick or household circumstances call for added care.
What to do when someone at home develops symptoms
CDC advises people with respiratory symptoms to stay home and away from others, including household members who are not sick. Follow its current guidance for returning to normal activities as symptoms change. Testing can help determine next steps. If the sick person has risk factors for severe illness, contact a healthcare provider promptly about testing and treatment: treatment may need to begin within a few days of symptom onset. The CDC prevention page links to current advice.

WHO’s household-care guidance recommends using a separate room for the sick person when possible. If people must share a room, keep distance and have the sick person and others in the room wear medical masks. Open windows when possible and create a cross-breeze; try to avoid moving air from the sick person’s room into the rest of the home. These are supplemental international recommendations, so pair them with current local public-health guidance. See WHO guidance on ventilation and air conditioning.

Use masks as an added layer, not a substitute for separation
CDC says masks and distance can lower transmission risk. NIOSH explains that closer fit and better filtration are expected to capture more particles, while gaps let particles pass. Choose a mask or respirator that fits closely and that the wearer can use consistently. NIOSH notes that when someone is sick, isolating away from others is more effective for protecting them than relying on a mask or respirator alone. The guidance supports these selection principles, not a ranking of specific models. See CDC/NIOSH’s community respirator and mask guidance.
Improve the air people share
Respiratory viruses can spread through the air, especially indoors and in crowded spaces. CDC recommends bringing in fresh air, purifying indoor air, or gathering outdoors when possible. At home, open doors or windows and/or use exhaust fans to increase outdoor-air flow. If your central HVAC system has a filter, CDC suggests running the fan continuously when visitors are present and using a pleated filter, changing it every three months or according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Portable HEPA air cleaners are another option. See the CDC’s cleaner-air guidance, dated August 18, 2025.

Ventilation and filtration do different jobs. Ventilation brings outdoor air in; a portable cleaner filters air already in the room. EPA says both can help reduce airborne contaminants, including SARS-CoV-2, but neither is enough by itself. Place a portable cleaner where people spend the most time, and aim its airflow so it does not blow from one person toward another. See the U.S. EPA’s guidance on indoor air in homes.
Choosing an optional portable air cleaner
If you want to add filtration, consider a portable HEPA cleaner sized for the room. CDC’s archived home-ventilation guidance advises checking room size and CADR (clean air delivery rate): a higher CADR means the unit cleans air faster. That page was last updated April 13, 2023, so check current product instructions when choosing and using a unit. No particular model is established as best, and buying one is not required. A cleaner adds filtration; it does not supply outdoor air. See the archived CDC home-ventilation guidance.

Compare room coverage, CADR, filter type, placement and whether airflow can be directed away from other people. Noise, price and replacement-filter costs may matter to your household, but they are not evidence that a unit prevents COVID-19. CDC’s “5 or more air changes per hour” figure on its cleaner-air page is directed at organizations, not stated there as a household target.

- Funight Ventilation Series KN95 Face Masks follow the GB2626-2019 respiratory protection standards. These standards require all masks to have a filtration efficiency of at least 95%, which means the material can filter out harmful molecules such as fine particles and dust.
- Ventilation Series KN95 Face Masks maintain a strict filtration efficiency standard while keeping the design comfortable and breathable. Each KN95 mask is composed of water column-grade melt-blown fabric, which has been proven to be more efficient than cloth masks due to its electrostatic properties. Through this design, Funight Ventilation Series KN95 Mask has achieved breathing resistance that is 20% better than that of the GB2626-2020 standard.
- Funight Black Face Mask: Increasing the width of the ear loop to 5.6 mm reduces pain in the ear and makes it more comfortable. And the ultrasonic welding technology we use makes the surfaces of two objects form a fusion between the molecular layers, without any rough stitches and thread ends, and make the ear hook stronger.
- 5-Ply Layers of Protective Filtration – Our KN95 masks are truly made of 5 layers with 2 non-woven outer layers as well as 2 melt-blown inner layers and a non-woven middle layer to absorb small moisture particles. Which is more protective than a 3-ply disposable mask to help filter out 95% of particles.

Use a practical layered plan
- For routine prevention: Keep vaccination, good hygiene and cleaner air in view as core measures.
- When someone is sick: Have them stay home and away from household members who are not sick; use a separate room if possible.
- If a room must be shared: Increase distance, improve ventilation and use well-fitting masks or respirators.
- For shared indoor air: Open windows or doors and use exhaust fans where practical. Consider a room-sized portable HEPA cleaner as an additional filtration layer.
- For next steps after symptoms: Consider testing and check current CDC guidance. Anyone at risk for severe illness should contact a healthcare provider promptly about treatment.
