1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFor respiratory infections such as COVID-19 and seasonal influenza, reduce risk by combining steps: stay home when sick, improve indoor airflow, avoid crowded and poorly ventilated places, use a well-fitting mask when appropriate, clean your hands, cover coughs and sneezes, and follow vaccination guidance for your disease and circumstances. No single step is a guarantee, and the right measures depend on how a disease spreads, your personal risk, local conditions, and current public-health advice.
Why prevention works best as a set of layers
Respiratory infections can spread through infectious particles in the air. Some precautions reduce the chance of encountering those particles; others reduce what an infected person releases or help prevent severe illness. WHO presents ventilation, masks, avoiding crowds, distance, hand hygiene, respiratory etiquette, and vaccination as complementary parts of COVID-19 prevention—not interchangeable solutions. See WHO’s COVID-19 questions and answers.

These measures are especially relevant to respiratory viruses. They should not be treated as a universal plan for every infectious disease: illnesses spread in different ways, so disease-specific guidance matters.
What to do to lower respiratory-infection risk
Stay home when you are unwell
If you have COVID-19 symptoms or test positive, WHO advises staying home and away from other people. WHO also identifies voluntary self-isolation as a way symptomatic or positive people can reduce influenza transmission. If contact with others cannot be avoided, follow current local guidance and take steps to reduce exposure, such as wearing a well-fitting mask and avoiding crowded, poorly ventilated places. Isolation periods and rules are disease-specific; do not assume one disease’s instructions apply to another. See WHO’s COVID-19 fact sheet and its seasonal influenza update.
#1 Best Overall
- NIOSH APPROVED: For at least 95 percent filtration efficiency against certain non-oil based particles
- COMPATIBLE: With a variety of protective eyewear and hearing protection
- ADJUSTABLE NOSECLIP: Reduces potential for eyewear fogging and helps provide a custom and secure seal
- TWO-STRAP DESIGN: With welded dual point attachement that helps provide a secure fit
- APPLICATIONS: Gringing, sanding, sweeping, bagging, and other dusty operations. Metalworking, chemical processing, construction, and metal processing
Improve airflow indoors
When practical, open windows or doors to bring in outdoor air. If the space allows, opening windows on opposite sides can create a cross-breeze. If that is not possible, WHO describes placing a fan in front of an open window to help move indoor air outside. Ventilation is one layer of prevention, not a standalone fix. Details are in WHO’s ventilation and air-conditioning guidance.
Use a well-fitting mask when it makes sense
A mask can reduce infectious particles that a person inhales or exhales. Consider one in crowded or poorly ventilated indoor spaces, or when you are ill and must be around others. Follow current local and disease-specific advice about when and how to wear one. WHO describes masks as part of a broader prevention package in its mask guidance.
Rank #2
- NIOSH-APPROVED N95 for at least 95 percent filtration efficiency against certain non-oil-based particles and aerosols
- USE FOR: Sanding, drywall cutting, sweeping, sawing, woodworking, fiberglass insulating, yard work, grinding and dusting
- 3M ADVANCED ELECTROSTATIC MEDIA enhances the capture of airborne particles and allows for easy breathing
- 3M COOL FLOW VALVE helps release warm, exhaled breath from inside the respirator
- UP TO 50% EASIER BREATHING Compared to 3M 8200
Clean your hands and cover coughs and sneezes
Wash your hands with soap and water or use an alcohol-based hand rub, particularly after coughing, sneezing, or blowing your nose. Cover coughs and sneezes with a tissue or a bent elbow; dispose of a used tissue and clean your hands afterward. WHO includes hand hygiene and respiratory etiquette in its COVID-19 prevention advice.
Follow vaccination advice for the disease and your risk group
Vaccines are disease-specific. WHO identifies seasonal influenza vaccination as the best way to reduce the risk of getting flu and to help prevent severe illness. It recommends annual influenza vaccination for health care workers, pregnant women, older adults, and people with chronic medical conditions. Eligibility and schedules vary by location and season, so check current local recommendations for your age and circumstances. See WHO’s guidance on avoiding influenza.
Rank #3
- NIOSH-APPROVED N95 for at least 95 percent filtration efficiency against certain non-oil-based particles and aerosols
- 3M COOL FLOW EXHALATION VALVE helps direct exhaled air downward and allows for easy breathing
- UP TO 50% EASIER BREATHING. Compared to non-valved 3M 8200 Testing
- ADVANCED FILTER MEDIA for easy breathing
- ADJUSTABLE M-NOSECLIP helps provide a custom and secure seal
How to choose which precautions to prioritize
There is no single numerical ranking of these measures that applies across diseases and settings. Consider what route of transmission is involved, whether a step reduces exposure, onward spread, or the risk of severe illness, how long and where people share space, and what is feasible for you. Personal risk and local disease conditions also matter. WHO’s 2026 guideline on public-health and social measures for epidemic and pandemic influenza emphasizes context-sensitive decisions and factors including equity, acceptability, feasibility, resources, and socioeconomic effects.
Because local recommendations, vaccine schedules, and outbreak conditions can change, use current public-health guidance for your location and situation. The measures described here focus on respiratory infections; other diseases may require different precautions.
Quick Recap
Best Value
- NIOSH APPROVED N95 - The VEVOX #9580V respirator is strictly evaluated and certified under 42 CFR Part 84 (TC-84A-5409). Regulatory compliance and product authenticity are verifiable via the official CDC/NIOSH Certified Equipment List (CEL).
- HIGH-FLOW EXHALATION VALVE - Engineered to rapidly expel exhaled breath, significantly mitigating internal heat and moisture buildup. The VEVOX N95 mask with valve ensures sustained respiratory efficiency during strenuous construction work.
- ADVANCED FILTER SYSTEM - Engineered for maximum safety, the 4-layer VEVOX filter system utilizes a high-tech electrostatic meltblown core. This disposable respirator efficiently intercepts at least 95% of airborne non-oil particulates.
- COMFORT-PLUS SEAL - The VEVOX #9580V features our specialized anatomical Comfort-Plus seal and a shape-retaining ergonomic shell. This advanced gasket creates a secure, custom-fit facial interface that prevents air leakage during extended use.
- ELASTIC-PRO HEADBANDS - The VEVOX #9580V utilizes dual Elastic-Pro headbands with ultrasonically welded attachments. This heavy-duty design ensures a secure, NIOSH-compliant seal around the back of the head and neck for a reliable, leak-free fit.
