To reduce stings around your home, put food away promptly, use tightly lidded garbage bins, and stay calm around a single flying insect. If several stinging insects attack, run indoors. For a nest, decide based on what the insect is, where the nest is, and whether it is safe to reach: a nest away from people may be left alone, while one beside a doorway or walkway may need professional attention or carefully label-directed treatment.
Make food and gathering areas less attractive
Yellowjackets can become persistent scavengers around human food and drinks in late summer and fall, according to University of Minnesota Extension. At outdoor meals, put food away as soon as people finish and discard scraps in a garbage container with a tight-fitting lid.

NIOSH, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, also recommends keeping work areas clean because some stinging insects are attracted to discarded food. Its workplace guidance suggests additional precautions that can also be practical outdoors at home: cover more skin with clothing, avoid perfumed toiletries, and choose light-colored, smooth-finished clothing. These steps can reduce exposure but do not guarantee protection or replace advice for local species.

If one insect is circling
Remain calm and still. NIOSH advises against swatting because it may provoke a sting. Give the insect room to move away rather than waving at it or trying to catch it.

If several insects attack
Run to get away and go indoors. NIOSH advises not to jump into water. Bees can release a chemical when they sting that attracts other bees, so move away from the attack rather than stopping to deal with the insect.
Choose what to do about a nest by its location
First, distinguish the insect and assess where the nest is. The nest-management guidance from University of Minnesota Extension addresses yellowjackets and paper wasps; it is not a universal treatment guide for every insect someone might call a bee.

- FAST KNOCKDOWN: Kills wasps, hornets & yellow jackets.
- ELIMINATES THE NEST: Eliminates the nest where insects live & breed.
- JET SPRAY: Reaches nests up to 27 feet away.
- OUTDOOR USE ONLY: Spray at sunrise or sunset when insects are least active.
- NON-STAINING FORMULA: Non-staining to most home siding depending on age & cleanliness.
- Out of the way: An out-of-the-way yellowjacket or paper wasp nest can be left alone, according to the extension. Avoid disturbing it.
- Near a doorway, walkway, or other busy spot: A nest where people regularly pass may warrant control. The extension notes that appropriate options depend on location and time of year.
- Concealed, difficult to reach, or close to people: Consider a professional inspection or removal rather than approaching or treating it yourself. The allergy-focused ACAAI guidance advises trained-professional removal of known or suspected nests near the home in the patient context it addresses.
University of Minnesota Extension says, in the context of nests close to where people are active, that they should be eliminated to minimize sting risk. That is not a direction to remove every nest regardless of species or location.
When consumer treatment may be an option
For some visible yellowjacket or paper wasp nests, the extension describes an aerosol labeled for wasps and hornets as one treatment option. That does not make such a product a bee repellent or an appropriate choice for every nest. Suitability depends on identifying the insect, the nest’s position and accessibility, and being able to follow the product label and protective directions exactly.

Do not approach a nest if it is active in a place people use, concealed, hard to reach, or beyond what you can handle while following the label. Professional help is a sensible alternative in those situations. No single method is established as universally safest for every nest.
