To limit the damage a compromised KVM guest can cause, restrict what its QEMU process can access on the host and what the guest can reach over the network. Keep libvirt’s host confinement and process sandbox enabled, expose only necessary files and devices, and review the effective policy on the running host rather than assuming a configured setting is enforced.
Why host-side controls matter
A compromised guest can put the host at risk through the QEMU process that runs it. Least privilege therefore means limiting both the host resources available to that process and the guest’s network reachability. These controls reduce exposure; they do not guarantee that a guest compromise cannot affect the host.

The guidance below applies to Linux hosts running QEMU/KVM under libvirt. Behavior depends on the libvirt and QEMU versions, distribution policy, security driver, and host configuration. It is not a universal recipe for standalone QEMU or other hypervisors.
Keep SELinux or AppArmor confinement active
Check which security framework and libvirt security driver the host actually uses, and confirm that its policy is loaded and enforcing. Do not infer protection from a setting or XML entry alone.

With SELinux sVirt, libvirt describes per-guest confined domains and matching labels for guest resources. This is intended to prevent one QEMU process from accessing resources labeled for another guest. AppArmor sVirt can generate per-VM profiles for qemu:///system guests when an AppArmor profile for the libvirt daemon is loaded. Confirm that each VM has its intended label or profile and that the files it needs have appropriate labels. libvirt’s SELinux documentation and AppArmor documentation describe these mechanisms.
Basic SELinux or AppArmor confinement is described as host protection; per-guest sVirt separation is an additional layer. Do not assume that basic confinement alone isolates one guest from another.

Run QEMU with only the identity and access it needs
Use the least-privileged QEMU identity supported by the deployment. Avoid running it as root or adding capabilities to resolve routine file-access errors. libvirt documents that non-root QEMU processes have no capabilities. Give QEMU access only to required files, using specific ownership, ACLs, and appropriate security labels; do not make files world-accessible or disable mandatory access control as a workaround. See libvirt’s QEMU user and group guidance.

- A private mount namespace presents QEMU with a restricted
/dev. - A built-in seccomp policy denies categories of system calls, including obsolete calls and operations related to privilege elevation, spawning, and resource control.
- A per-VM cgroup can apply a device access list, subject to controller availability and host configuration.
The libvirt QEMU passthrough security guidance says these policies cannot be changed per VM through that guidance, though some protections can be disabled per VM and more can be disabled host-wide. Treat disabling a protection as an increase in host exposure, not as a routine compatibility switch.
Expose only devices the guest requires. libvirt describes cgroup device ACLs as restricting QEMU to shared devices and explicitly assigned block-device-backed disks when the relevant controller is available. Avoid broad device access and unnecessary passthrough. If passthrough is necessary, document why and verify the applicable host policy. The domain XML device reference describes device configuration.

Restrict guest network access by interface
libvirt network filters can apply rules to individual guest interfaces on supported network, ethernet (in bridge mode), and bridge network types. Define allowed destinations and services around the guest’s actual role, then verify the guest cannot reach unrelated services. The network filter documentation explains the feature.
There is no universal safe allowlist: a web server, build worker, and database guest need different flows. Network filters also do not replace deployment-specific segmentation or host firewall policy.

Use resource limits carefully
Domain XML provides memory tunables applied to the QEMU process as a whole. libvirt warns that an overly low hard memory limit for QEMU/KVM can lead the kernel to kill the domain, and that all QEMU memory needs can be difficult to predict in advance. Size limits for the workload and QEMU overhead, then monitor behavior. CPU allocation and disk I/O tuning are also available, but should reflect operational needs rather than being treated as standalone security boundaries. See the domain XML memory tuning reference.
Review the effective configuration
Use this checklist when reviewing a host, after configuration changes, and after upgrades. It is a review framework, not a portable command sequence: the relevant controls and their behavior vary by host and version.
Quick Recap
- Identify the active libvirt security driver and verify that its policy is enforcing.
- Check each VM’s SELinux label or AppArmor profile and confirm required host resources are labeled consistently.
- Confirm QEMU runs under the intended user and group, without unnecessary capabilities or root identity.
- Inspect domain XML for unnecessary devices, passthrough, shared writable paths, and broad host-file access.
- Verify that the private mount namespace, seccomp policy, and per-VM device restrictions have not been weakened.
- Review each interface’s network filter and test whether the guest can reach only required services.
- Assess resource limits against workload needs and QEMU overhead; do not set an unvalidated memory hard limit.
- Recheck effective settings after changes, upgrades, and VM startup, because configuration and version affect behavior.
