Lower lossy quality gradually and inspect small text and sharp edges. Keep the original PNG when exact pixel fidelity matters.
1. Capture only the pixels you need
A full-page capture includes content beyond the visible browser area, so a long page can contain many pixels—and more pixels generally mean more image data. Avoid capturing a wider viewport than the image’s eventual use requires.

- In Chrome, open DevTools and turn on Device Mode.
- Choose the intended device or set a custom viewport width and height.
- Open the DevTools menu and choose More options > Capture a full size screenshot. The result includes content outside the visible viewport.
Use the intended display width rather than capturing a desktop-width page and shrinking it later if the screenshot is only for a narrow document or webpage. This avoids storing detail that the destination will not show.

2. Resize a copy when the destination displays it smaller
If the screenshot will appear at a smaller size, resize a copy toward the dimensions at which it will be displayed. Reducing width and height reduces pixel count and can reduce file size, but it also removes detail: the smaller image may not hold up when zoomed or inspected closely. Preserve the full-resolution original if that detail may be needed later.

Chrome DevTools Protocol documents screenshot capture beyond the viewport and supports PNG, JPEG and WebP output. Its documented quality parameter applies to JPEG; do not assume every browser interface exposes the same format and quality controls. The optional maximum width and height controls in Chrome DevTools MCP preserve aspect ratio when downscaling.
3. Choose a format for the job

Google describes WebP images as about 30% smaller than PNG and JPEG at equivalent visual quality. That is a general format comparison, not a guaranteed saving for any particular screenshot. WebP supports lossy and lossless compression as well as transparency. 4. Tune compression without making text blurry
- Keep the original screenshot unchanged and work on a copy.
- Export or convert the copy to a lossy format if acceptable, then lower its quality in small steps.
- Compare each result at its normal display size and enlarged.
- Check small text, thin rules, icons, gradients and other sharp edges. Stop lowering quality when artifacts or legibility loss become noticeable.
- Compare file size and dimensions with the original, and use the smallest version that still meets the intended viewing need.
There is no universal quality setting that suits every page: text density, colors, image content and capture dimensions all affect the result. If you already have a PNG, use an image optimizer or convert a copy to WebP or JPEG. Keep PNG when pixel-exact output or transparency is required; otherwise, test a compressed copy. Compare its dimensions, byte size and appearance with the original, especially around fine text and edges. The best choice depends on the destination’s format support and how closely readers need to inspect the image.

6. Troubleshoot common results
- The image is still large: Check its pixel dimensions and whether you captured a wider viewport or more page content than needed. Resize a copy or try a lossy format.
- Text looks soft or edges show artifacts: Restore the original and use a higher quality setting, a larger output size, or lossless PNG/WebP.
- Transparency disappeared: JPEG does not support transparency. Use PNG or a WebP workflow that preserves it.
- The destination rejects the file: Confirm its accepted formats, then export a compatible copy rather than overwriting the source.
- The browser capture is only the visible viewport: Use Chrome DevTools’ More options > Capture a full size screenshot command rather than a viewport-only capture.
7. Keep the tradeoff explicit
Compare methods on both file size and readability. Smaller dimensions remove detail; lossy encoding may damage small text or sharp edges; lossless output preserves pixels but may remain larger. Check the image in the place and at the size it will actually be viewed, and retain an original when later inspection matters.
