To cut a home server’s electricity use without sacrificing services, measure its power at the wall first, identify avoidable loads, then change one thing at a time and measure again. The most practical first steps are often retiring or consolidating unneeded equipment, enabling suitable power-management settings, and avoiding unnecessary cooling. Replace hardware only when measurements and total cost make the case.
Measure your server’s actual power use
A power supply’s wattage rating is its capacity, not a reading of what the server actually consumes. Measure the whole system at the wall, including the drives, fans and attached equipment affected by any change. For a single machine, use an appropriate wall power meter; for a rack, an outlet-monitoring PDU can track individual loads. ENERGY STAR says monitoring equipment and rack consumption can help identify efficiency opportunities (ENERGY STAR PDU guidance).

Capture a normal idle period as well as representative work. If your server’s workload varies by day, measure long enough to include that pattern. Use the meter’s logged energy readings in kilowatt-hours (kWh), or calculate kWh from its power readings over time. Estimate annual use from a representative day or week, rather than assuming a short snapshot describes the whole year. To estimate the bill impact, multiply the estimated kWh by your actual electricity rate and use the billing period that applies to that rate.

For a rack, PDU monitoring can help trend outlet or rack power, identify high-use or unneeded equipment and support capacity planning.

Remove or consolidate equipment you do not need
List the machines and services you run, then mark which are essential, which might share a host, and which are dormant or redundant. ENERGY STAR recommends consolidating lightly used servers and removing unnecessary hardware (ENERGY STAR enterprise server criteria).
Consolidation can reduce the number of powered machines, but do not treat it as a simple equipment-count exercise. Before moving services, check that the remaining system can meet their resource needs and that a single failure will not take out services that need separate failure domains. Confirm your backup and recovery plan, availability needs and performance requirements. After consolidating, compare power use under the same representative workload as your baseline.
Enable power management that fits your workload
Check whether processor power management and supported power-saving states are enabled. Relevant controls may be in BIOS or UEFI, server firmware, a hypervisor or the operating system. ENERGY STAR says power management is part of server efficiency and advises keeping it engaged; its guidance also notes that servers may not be configured for optimal efficiency by default (ENERGY STAR enterprise server criteria; ENERGY STAR purchasing guidance).

The integration of dual 2.5 Gigabit Ethernet ports (powered by Realtek RTL8125 controller) makes this compact computer an exceptional hardware choice for tech enthusiasts. Easily configure it into software routers, hardware firewalls (pfSense, OpnSense), home NAS servers, or local homelabs.
Use settings compatible with your services’ latency, performance and uptime needs. Make one change at a time, check that the server behaves as required under load, and remeasure it against the same baseline conditions.
Review drives, fans and attached devices
Check whether every drive, fan, controller and peripheral is needed and active. Consolidating storage or moving to more efficient storage may help, but only if the arrangement still meets your backup, availability and performance requirements. ENERGY STAR includes efficient storage measures in its data-center recommendations, but an example on its page says deduplication reduced stored data by more than 95% for some organizations; that is not a likely or guaranteed result for an individual home server (ENERGY STAR enterprise server criteria).
Reduce avoidable cooling
Keep air intakes and exhausts clear, and position equipment so hot exhaust does not flow straight back into an intake. Avoid overcooling the room without a reason. In a larger server room, review airflow paths, equipment arrangement and whether cooling runs continuously at a needlessly low set point.

EPA guidance for co-location data centers discusses airflow management, operating temperature, cabling and hot/cold aisle separation. Its potential savings figures are facility-specific, not estimates for a home server: the EPA release says airflow management could reduce energy use by 15%, a one-degree inlet-temperature increase could reduce cooling costs by 4%, and hot/cold aisle separation could reduce consumption by 10–35% depending on the setup (U.S. EPA, May 17, 2023).

Check UPS and power-distribution choices
A UPS protects equipment during power problems, but its conversion losses vary with the equipment and load. If buying or replacing one, compare efficiency and operating modes while preserving the protection your setup needs. ENERGY STAR recommends efficient UPSs and appropriate loading; it reports 40–60% lower energy losses for ENERGY STAR certified UPSs, a program-level comparison rather than a promise for a particular unit or household load (ENERGY STAR purchasing policy guidance).
For rack equipment, an appropriately selected PDU can also matter. ENERGY STAR says PDUs with high-efficiency transformers can be 2–3% more efficient overall than generic lower-efficiency transformers. That is a comparison between PDU types, not a predicted saving for every rack or single-server setup (ENERGY STAR PDU guidance).

Decide whether replacement hardware is worth it
Compare a refresh with your measured current use, actual workload and local electricity rate. Consider idle and active power, useful workload performance, power-supply efficiency, purchase cost and any change in cooling demand. A more efficient server does not automatically pay for itself if it costs more upfront or if its performance is unnecessary for the workload.
ENERGY STAR says certified enterprise servers use 30% less energy than conventional models, attributing the difference to components and power management at low workloads. Its Data Center Equipment page gives an example of average savings of over 650 kWh per year for a certified server versus a standard server when power management is enabled. These are program comparisons and an example, not guaranteed savings for a specific home server; actual results depend on the current machine, workload and settings (ENERGY STAR enterprise server criteria; ENERGY STAR Data Center Equipment).

ENERGY STAR lists June 17, 2019 as the effective date of its current enterprise server specification and directs buyers to its Product Finder. Check current criteria and eligible models when shopping, rather than assuming a model remains certified (ENERGY STAR enterprise server criteria).
Use large-facility statistics in the right context
Data-center figures can explain why efficiency measures matter, but they are not household forecasts. ENERGY STAR’s PDU guidance cites a historical Uptime Institute 2014 report of average PUE at 1.7, and describes a Target case study in which powering down two unloaded 300 kVA PDUs at one of its two ENERGY STAR certified data centers was associated with 261,000 kWh in annual savings. Neither figure is a target or expected saving for a home server (ENERGY STAR PDU guidance).
The U.S. Department of Energy’s current data-center page states that data centers account for approximately 2% of total U.S. electricity use. That national estimate does not indicate what share of electricity a particular household server uses (U.S. Department of Energy: Data Centers and Servers).
