If you want to reduce sucralose, the practical step is simple: check ingredient lists and choose an unsweetened or sucralose-free equivalent when it works for you. The widely reported 2023 finding involved sucralose-6-acetate producing genotoxicity signals in laboratory screening assays—not proof that ordinary dietary sucralose intake damages human DNA. EFSA’s 2026 re-evaluation concluded that sucralose used as authorized food additive E 955 does not raise a genotoxicity concern, while the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) continues to describe sucralose as approved for food use in the United States.
What the DNA-damage headline actually means
The headline refers to a 2023 study by Schiffman and colleagues. The researchers tested sucralose-6-acetate and sucralose in laboratory systems, including a MultiFlow assay and a micronucleus test. The abstract reported genotoxicity for sucralose-6-acetate and classified its mechanism as clastogenic in the MultiFlow assay.

That is an in-vitro screening result. Cells or test systems in a laboratory are not the same as a person eating and drinking products that contain sucralose. The study did not establish that ordinary dietary sucralose consumption damages DNA in people.

Study corresponding author Susan Schiffman, an adjunct professor in the joint biomedical engineering department at North Carolina State University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, was quoted in the study release saying, “Our new work establishes that sucralose-6-acetate is genotoxic.” The quotation describes the laboratory finding about that compound; it should not be read as a clinical finding that routine sucralose intake has been shown to damage human DNA.

Sucralose-6-acetate is therefore the specific compound at the center of the prominent 2023 result. It is not interchangeable, in the evidence, with a demonstration of DNA damage from every serving of a sucralose-sweetened food or drink.
That distinction also explains why a dramatic headline and a regulatory assessment can appear to conflict. The laboratory work asks whether a substance can produce particular cellular signals under test conditions. A food-safety assessment weighs a broader body of evidence, including study design, dose, biological relevance and results in living systems. Those are related questions, but they are not identical ones.
What regulators say about sucralose
EFSA’s 2026 re-evaluation
The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) reviewed newer and older evidence in its 2026 re-evaluation of sucralose as food additive E 955. EFSA described some positive in-vitro DNA-damage findings as limited in relevance. It also noted negative results in relevant bacterial mutation and micronucleus assays, together with negative results for in-vivo mutagenicity endpoints.
Recommended Free Tools
EFSA’s conclusion was that sucralose does not raise a genotoxicity concern when used as an authorized food additive. This is a regulatory conclusion about authorized food-additive use. It is not a declaration that every conceivable exposure, dose, formulation or use outside that scope is risk-free.
FDA’s U.S. position
The FDA says sucralose is approved for use in food in the United States. Its examples include baked goods, beverages, chewing gum, gelatins and frozen dairy desserts, among other foods. The agency says it reviewed more than 110 studies designed to identify possible toxic effects during its evaluation.
That statement describes the FDA’s review. It does not mean every later study was part of that historical review, and it does not turn a regulatory approval into a promise that any individual product is appropriate for every person.
Acceptable daily intake figures need a date and a source
A 2023 paper in Nature reported then-established acceptable daily intake (ADI) values of 15 milligrams per kilogram of body weight for EFSA and 5 milligrams per kilogram for the FDA. Regulatory assessments can change, so those figures should be checked against current agency material before being treated as current values.

“Sugar-free” and “diet” labels are useful prompts to inspect a package, but they are not a complete search rule. A product can use those marketing terms without being the only kind of food that contains sucralose, and a product that does not use those words may still list the ingredient.
Look for the word sucralose in the ingredients panel. In the United States, that is the direct consumer-facing name to scan for. If the label is difficult to read, use the package’s enlarged nutrition or ingredient view when available, or ask a retailer or manufacturer for the current ingredient list. There is no need to purchase a special detector, test kit or supplement to identify it.

A regular version, a reduced-sugar version and a seasonal flavor may have different ingredient lists. The same caution applies when a familiar package announces a reformulation: repeat the check instead of relying on an older label or memory.
How to reduce your intake, step by step
1. Pick the foods and drinks you use most often
Do not begin by trying to eliminate every packaged food. Make a short list of the products you consume repeatedly: a daily drink, a routinely purchased yogurt or dessert, gum, a baking ingredient or a convenience snack. Focusing on repeated choices usually gives you the clearest way to reduce exposure without making your entire diet impractical.
Frequency is a useful prioritization tool, not a claim that occasional use is dangerous. If one beverage appears in your routine every day and another food appears once a month, checking the daily item first is simply the most efficient way to make a change you can maintain.
2. Read the full ingredient list
- Find the ingredients panel rather than relying on “low sugar,” “no added sugar,” “sugar-free” or “diet” wording on the front.
- Scan the list for sucralose.
- Check every flavor or size you buy; formulations can differ between varieties.
- Repeat the check when you switch brands or when a package announces a reformulation.
Ingredient lists are more useful for this purpose than a product’s advertising language. “Natural,” “light,” “keto” or “alternative” does not answer the specific question of whether sucralose is present. If you buy from a restaurant or café, ask what sweetener is used when that information is important to your decision.
3. Compare like with like
When a frequently used product lists sucralose, compare it with a similar product made without sucralose. Keep the comparison narrow: the same type of drink, dessert, gum or baking product is easier to evaluate than a completely different food.
Use ingredient presence as the decision criterion. If sucralose is absent from the comparable product and its taste, price and nutrition fit your needs, it is a practical way to lower your sucralose intake. The absence of sucralose does not prove that the replacement is healthier or that another sweetener is safer; this evidence does not establish a universally preferable substitute.
4. Replace sweetened drinks when that is acceptable
For a beverage you drink often, choose an unsweetened version or water when you can tolerate the change. This is an exposure-reduction choice, not a medical requirement. If you dislike the unsweetened option, try changing one routine serving first rather than abandoning the plan because a total switch is unpleasant.

Water is a straightforward option because it contains no sweetener ingredient. An unsweetened tea, coffee or other beverage may also work for you, but the relevant test remains the current ingredient list and whether you will actually keep using it.
5. Recheck products you eat away from home
Restaurant drinks, café additions, packaged snacks at work and shared desserts may not have a convenient front label. Ask which sweetener is used when the answer would affect your choice. If staff cannot confirm the ingredient, choose an option whose ingredients are clear, such as water or an unsweetened drink.
6. Keep the approach proportionate
Reducing or avoiding sucralose is a personal choice supported by straightforward label reading. The available evidence does not require everyone to eliminate it, and it does not support panic-driven detoxes, supplements or expensive tracking devices.
How to choose an alternative without making an unsupported safety claim
The evidence summarized here does not rank other non-sugar sweeteners by DNA safety. It would therefore be misleading to say that switching to a named alternative is medically necessary or that any replacement is automatically safer.
Instead, evaluate a substitute using three practical questions:
- Is sucralose absent? Confirm this in the current ingredient list.
- Will you actually use it? An alternative that tastes unacceptable will not reduce intake if you return to the original product.
- Does it fit your needs? Consider allergies, dietary restrictions, medical advice, cost and availability separately from the DNA-damage question.
An unsweetened product or water avoids the need to choose another sweetener. A product containing a different sweetener may also meet your preference, but the information here cannot establish that it carries less risk in every respect.
Common mistakes when trying to avoid sucralose
Assuming “sugar-free” means “sucralose-free”
“Sugar-free” describes a product’s sugar content, not a guarantee about which sweetener was used. Read the ingredients panel.
Checking only drinks
Beverages are a visible source, but FDA also lists baked goods, chewing gum, gelatins and frozen dairy desserts. Inspect the categories you buy rather than limiting your search to soda or flavored water.
Treating the 2023 assay as a human diagnosis
The study’s MultiFlow and micronucleus findings came from laboratory screening. They do not diagnose DNA damage in a person who ate a sucralose-containing product.

Treating EFSA’s conclusion as proof that every exposure is harmless
EFSA’s conclusion applies to sucralose used as authorized food additive E 955. It should not be expanded into a claim about every conceivable dose, product or exposure route.
Using an ADI as a consumption target
The ADI figures reported in the 2023 paper are regulatory reference values, and their currency should be verified. They are not goals, serving recommendations or a reason to increase intake up to a calculated limit.
Buying a product because it says “natural” or “alternative”
Those words do not answer whether sucralose is present or establish that a replacement is safer. Ingredient lists and your own tolerance are more useful decision tools.
Assuming a brand name answers the ingredient question
Readers often ask whether “Splenda” is linked to the headline. Brand language is not a substitute for the ingredient panel. Check the specific package for the word sucralose, because formulations and products can differ.

A simple decision framework for everyday products
Use this sequence each time you are deciding whether to keep, replace or skip a product:
- Is sucralose listed? If no, there is no sucralose ingredient to avoid in that product’s current formula.
- If yes, is it a frequent choice? Prioritize daily or near-daily items before occasional foods.
- Is there an acceptable unsweetened or sucralose-free equivalent? Compare the ingredient list and whether you will realistically use it.
- If there is no acceptable equivalent, can you reduce frequency or portion size? Make a sustainable change rather than an all-or-nothing promise.
- Do you have a medical reason to change your diet? Discuss individualized restrictions with a qualified clinician instead of relying on a general headline.
Keep the process current. Labels can change, and an online product description may lag behind the package in your hand. When the ingredient information conflicts, use the most recent package label or confirm the formula with the manufacturer.

The evidence supports a careful distinction. A 2023 laboratory study reported genotoxicity signals for sucralose-6-acetate in screening assays. That finding is biologically relevant enough to explain why readers are asking questions, but it is not a human clinical demonstration. The sources discussed here do not establish DNA damage from ordinary dietary sucralose exposure in people.
EFSA’s 2026 re-evaluation reached a different regulatory-level conclusion for authorized food-additive use, finding no genotoxicity concern for sucralose. FDA continues to list sucralose as approved for use in U.S. foods and identifies many categories in which it may appear. Both statements can be true alongside a laboratory result because they address different evidence, endpoints and scopes.

When to seek individual advice
General guidance cannot account for pregnancy, allergies, gastrointestinal symptoms, diabetes treatment, an eating disorder, or another condition that changes your nutritional needs. If a clinician has advised a specific diet, follow that individualized advice. Ask the clinician or a registered dietitian how to adjust sweetened products without compromising adequate energy or nutrition.
For everyone else, an ingredient-focused approach keeps the response proportional to the evidence: understand what the study tested, recognize the limits of laboratory findings, and make the food choices that best match your own preferences and needs.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I avoid sucralose?
Read the full ingredient list and look specifically for “sucralose.” Prioritize products you use often, then choose an unsweetened or sucralose-free equivalent when its taste, price and nutrition work for you. Water is another simple option for beverages. You do not need a detector, supplement or detox program.
Which foods contain sucralose?
FDA lists baked goods, beverages, chewing gum, gelatins and frozen dairy desserts among food categories where sucralose may appear. “Sugar-free” and “diet” products are useful prompts to check, but they are not the only possible sources. Confirm the current ingredient list for each product.
Is Splenda linked to DNA damage?
The 2023 headline concerned sucralose-6-acetate in laboratory assays, not proof that ordinary dietary sucralose damages human DNA. If a package is marketed under the Splenda name, check its ingredient panel for sucralose and make your decision from the specific product formula.
What is sucralose-6-acetate?
It is the compound that produced genotoxicity signals in the 2023 Schiffman study’s in-vitro MultiFlow and micronucleus screening assays. That laboratory result is not the same as a human clinical finding about routine consumption of sucralose-containing foods.
Does FDA approval mean sucralose is risk-free?
No regulatory statement should be expanded that far. FDA describes sucralose as approved for food use and says it reviewed more than 110 studies for possible toxic effects. EFSA’s 2026 conclusion found no genotoxicity concern for authorized use as food additive E 955. Those conclusions address defined uses and evidence; they are not guarantees about every conceivable exposure.

There is no basis here for ranking another non-sugar sweetener as universally safer or medically necessary. Compare the ingredient list, whether you will actually use the product, and your own dietary, medical and budget needs. An unsweetened product or water avoids choosing a replacement sweetener.
Do I need to calculate an acceptable daily intake?
No. ADI values are regulatory reference points, not consumption goals. A 2023 Nature paper cited values of 15 mg/kg body weight for EFSA and 5 mg/kg for FDA at that time; verify current agency information before treating those figures as current, and do not use them as a reason to increase intake.
Can I identify sucralose without a special test?
Yes. The direct consumer step is reading the ingredients panel for the word “sucralose.” Recheck different flavors, sizes, brands and reformulated packages because recipes can differ. If you eat away from home, ask staff or choose an option with clear ingredients.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: The 2023 DNA-damage story involved sucralose-6-acetate in laboratory screening assays, not a demonstration that ordinary dietary sucralose damages people’s DNA. EFSA’s 2026 assessment found no genotoxicity concern for authorized food-additive use, and FDA lists sucralose as approved in U.S. foods.
