To reduce stuttering, first identify when it happens, then retest the same scene after changing one thing at a time. A high average FPS does not rule out hitches: frame rates describe how many frames are produced over time, while stutter is about uneven delivery. A pause after an update may be shader compilation; a low frame rate that persists may instead point to graphics settings, background work, heat, power, or a hardware limit. There is no single graphics preset or upgrade that fixes every PC.
How do I stop stuttering in a demanding PC game?
Start by recording the pattern rather than changing several settings at once. Note whether the hitch occurs in one game or several, only after an update, on a first visit to an area, during combat, or after the PC has been playing for a while. Also record the game version, Windows version, graphics driver, CPU and GPU models, memory, resolution, and whether the game is running on a laptop with switchable graphics.

Choose a repeatable scene or route, use the same settings, and compare after each change. Intel’s game troubleshooting guidance recommends documenting reproducible symptoms and checking game updates and reports from the developer or PC maker. If possible, note both the average frame rate and when individual hitches occur; an average alone can hide brief interruptions.
- Brief hitches on a first run or after an update: shader compilation is one plausible cause.
- Low frame rate throughout a repeatable scene: test graphics settings and configuration, then investigate which component is limiting performance.
- Performance declines during a long session: check temperatures, clock speeds, cooling, and power behavior.
Why does my game stutter after updating my graphics driver?
A driver update can clear previously compiled shader data, so the game may need to compile shaders again. NVIDIA’s Control Panel reference says installing a driver deletes the shader cache and that a player may see gameplay stutter the first time a game is run afterward. Microsoft also explains that just-in-time shader compilation can cause in-game stutter in its Advanced Shader Delivery overview.

This is a possible explanation, not a diagnosis for every hitch. On Intel Arc, Intel advises letting shader processing finish after driver installation; its guidance says to allow shaders to reach 100% before fully starting the game. See Intel’s Arc stuttering guidance. Some games compile shaders as areas or effects are encountered, so a first visit can hitch even when the driver has not just changed.
AMD’s advisory for affected titles using background shader compilation with Adrenalin Edition 26.9.2 recommends approximately 15 minutes of gameplay before capturing performance, and excluding the first benchmark run of a new session. AMD notes that compilation is CPU-bound and completion time varies with CPU performance and system load. Keep that timing scoped to the titles and conditions in AMD’s advisory; it is not a universal waiting period for every game.
Avoid routinely clearing shader caches as a troubleshooting ritual. The cache exists to reuse compiled work, and NVIDIA notes that an undersized cache can evict useful shaders. Repeatedly removing it can mean more recompilation rather than less stutter.

Before changing graphics quality or shopping for components, verify that the PC and game are configured as intended. Apply the current game patch, use a graphics driver appropriate for the GPU and PC maker, and check the developer’s support notes for known title-specific problems.

- Hybrid-graphics laptop: confirm the game is using the intended high-performance GPU rather than integrated graphics. Use the laptop maker’s guidance where available, and connect power or select the appropriate power mode for gaming.
- Background capture: temporarily turn off Game Bar background recording or other game-capture features and retest. Intel lists background recording and power-plan checks among its troubleshooting steps.
- Other background work: close nonessential CPU-heavy utilities as a test. AMD notes that background processes can occupy CPU resources.
Change one item, then replay the same scene. If the result does not improve, restore the original setting before testing another factor; otherwise it becomes difficult to tell what mattered.
How can I make frame rates more stable?
Use the game’s graphics menu to lower one demanding setting or reduce resolution by a small step, then compare the same scene. This trades image quality for performance, and the settings that matter most vary by game and hardware. Consult the game’s own guidance where available rather than assuming a vendor’s preset is best for every system.
Vendor tools can expose game-specific controls: AMD documents application profiles and graphics controls in its Adrenalin settings guide, while NVIDIA documents per-program settings and a maximum frame-rate control in its Manage 3D Settings reference. If a very high frame rate fluctuates, test an in-game or driver frame-rate cap. Keep it only if it makes delivery feel smoother on your particular display and in that game; the available guidance does not establish one ideal cap for all systems.

What if performance gets worse after playing for a while?
A game that starts smoothly but slows during sustained play warrants a check of CPU and GPU temperatures, clock speeds, fans, airflow, and power behavior. Use a reputable monitoring utility and compare readings with the published operating limits for the exact processor and graphics card. There is no single safe temperature threshold that applies to every model.
AMD explains that CPU clock speeds depend on temperature, system power, cooling, and workload. If temperatures rise alongside falling clocks or performance, check that the cooler is properly fitted and that the PC has unobstructed airflow; consult AMD’s CPU performance and temperature guidance. A temperature reading by itself does not prove throttling, so compare it with the component’s specifications and the rest of the system’s behavior.
When should I investigate the game or consider hardware?
If the problem is repeatable in one game after the broad checks, look at that developer’s current support page and patch notes. Drivers can include fixes or known issues specific to a title, and Intel recommends checking developer, OEM, and known-issue information in its game troubleshooting guidance.
If several games have persistently low performance, use monitoring to establish whether the limit is CPU, GPU, memory, storage, temperature, or power before choosing an upgrade. A new graphics card, cooling component, SSD, or memory kit could help in different diagnosed cases, but the right choice depends on the exact PC, the measured bottleneck, compatibility, power and cooling capacity, and the affected game. Without those details, naming a product or promising an FPS gain would be guesswork.
