Start with the affected game’s update and graphics settings, then verify that Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) is supported and enabled on both the PS5 and the display. If the symptom is a missing, flickering, or downgraded 4K/120 Hz signal rather than uneven game motion, troubleshoot the display firmware, HDMI port, connection path, and cable instead. No single setting or accessory fixes every kind of stutter: Sony says VRR results vary by display and game, and a game may need a VRR optimization patch.
First identify what feels “stuttery”
“Stutter” is used for several different problems. The remedy depends on whether the game is delivering uneven frames, the display is tearing, the HDMI link is repeatedly renegotiating, or an online match is delayed. A PS5 setting that helps one symptom can do nothing for another.

| What you notice | Most likely category | What to check first |
|---|---|---|
| Motion speeds up and slows down in a repeatable scene; camera pans look uneven even when the signal stays locked | Uneven frame delivery (frame-time spikes) in the game | Game update, the game’s graphics mode, and VRR compatibility |
| Horizontal breaks through moving objects while the image otherwise remains stable | Screen tearing | VRR support and the PS5 VRR setting |
| Image flickers, blanks, drops to a lower resolution, or 120 Hz disappears | HDMI/display-output problem | Display firmware, the correct HDMI input, direct connection, transfer-rate settings, and cable rating |
| Characters or vehicles react late in an online match, while offline scenes look smooth | Online latency or server behavior | Test an offline scene separately; the official material covered here does not establish network lag as a cause of local frame-pacing problems |
Use an offline scene, a repeatable camera pan, or the game’s own benchmark when available. Change one setting at a time and return to the same scene. This prevents a display-signal fault from being mistaken for a game-engine problem.

- Update the affected game and PS5 system software.
- Compare the game’s available graphics or frame-rate modes in the problem scene.
- Confirm that the display and the game support VRR, then enable VRR on the PS5.
- Test Apply to Unsupported Games only as an optional experiment.
- Check 120 Hz output when the game and display both support it.
- If the signal is missing, flickering, or downgraded, inspect the HDMI path, firmware, port, resolution, transfer rate, and cable.
- Escalate a repeatable, title-specific problem with a record of your tests.
This sequence puts software and compatibility checks before buying hardware. It also keeps a 4K/120 Hz signal fault separate from uneven frame delivery inside a game.

Step 1: update the game and the PS5
Check the game
- On the PS5 home screen, highlight the affected game or app.
- Press the Options button on the controller.
- Select Check for Update and install any available update.
A title update can address a game-specific performance problem, but Sony’s support instructions do not promise that every update will improve frame pacing. Record the game version before and after the update so you can tell whether the behavior changed.
Check system software
- Open Settings.
- Choose System.
- Select System Software and use the available update option.
After installing an update, reproduce the same scene rather than judging from a different level or menu. If only one title remains uneven while other games are stable, that points toward a title-specific issue rather than a universal PS5 setting.
Step 2: compare the game’s own graphics modes
Many PS5 games offer a performance or frame-rate mode alongside a higher-resolution or visual-quality mode. The labels, targets, and behavior are controlled by each game, so there is no universal Sony setting that guarantees smoother delivery.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Open the affected game’s settings or options menu.
- Locate its graphics, display, or performance section.
- Note the current mode, then switch to the other available mode.
- Return to the same repeatable scene and compare camera pans, traversal, and combat effects.
Do not assume that a mode named “performance” always produces a constant frame rate, or that a “quality” mode is defective. A game can have frame-time spikes in either mode. Keep VRR and display settings unchanged while comparing modes so the result is meaningful.
Step 3: verify VRR compatibility and enable it correctly
What VRR does
Variable Refresh Rate synchronizes a compatible display’s refresh timing with the PS5’s graphical output. That can reduce visible tearing and make variable frame delivery look smoother. Sony describes VRR for HDMI 2.1 VRR-compatible TVs and monitors, and notes that results vary with the particular display and game. Some games also require a patch to be fully optimized for VRR.

Check both ends of the connection
- The display must explicitly support VRR over the HDMI input you are using.
- The PS5 must be connected to an HDMI input that supports the display’s advertised VRR mode; inputs on the same display may not have identical capabilities.
- The game may need native VRR support or an optimization update for the best result.
- Display firmware can affect compatibility and signal behavior.
Enable VRR on PS5
- Open Settings.
- Go to Screen and Video.
- Choose Video Output.
- Select VRR and enable it.
Use the display’s on-screen information panel, if it has one, to confirm that VRR engages during gameplay. A stable VRR indicator is useful evidence that the feature is active; it is not proof that a game’s frame-time spikes have disappeared.
Step 4: treat “Apply to Unsupported Games” as a controlled experiment
The PS5 offers an option to apply VRR to games that do not have native VRR support. Sony says this may stabilize the frame rate in some such games, but it is not a guaranteed fix and can produce unexpected behavior.
- Open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output > VRR.
- Enable Apply to Unsupported Games.
- Replay the same scene and look for smoother motion, flicker, brightness changes, or other new artifacts.
- If behavior becomes worse or unusual, return to the same menu and turn the option off.
“If you experience unexpected behavior while playing games, turn off this setting.”
Keep this option on only when it produces a repeatable improvement on your display and the affected title. Do not present it as a universal remedy for frame-time spikes.
Step 5: test 120 Hz only when every component supports it
120 Hz Output controls whether the PS5 sends a 120 Hz signal to compatible displays and games. It does not make a game render at a higher frame rate by itself. The game must support the mode, and the display and HDMI path must accept it.

- Open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output.
- Find 120 Hz Output.
- Leave it enabled when the display and game support 120 Hz and the signal is stable.
- If a compatible game causes video-output problems on a monitor or other display, turn 120 Hz Output off and test again.
If disabling 120 Hz removes flicker, blanking, or a fallback to a lower resolution, you have identified a display-output compatibility problem—not proof that the game’s internal frame pacing is fixed. A higher refresh signal can improve presentation when supported, but it cannot create frames the game does not render.
Step 6: troubleshoot a missing, flickering, or downgraded 4K/120 Hz signal
When the image blanks, flickers, loses HDR, or reports a lower resolution or refresh rate, stop changing in-game graphics modes and check the entire signal path.
Confirm the display and HDMI input
- Verify that the TV or monitor supports the resolution and refresh combination you want.
- Use the HDMI input specified by the display manufacturer for HDMI 2.1, 4K/120 Hz, and VRR; another input may be limited.
- Check the display’s own settings for an enhanced, high-bandwidth, or similar HDMI mode when the manufacturer requires one.
- Install current display firmware before judging compatibility.
Remove intermediary devices
Connect the PS5 directly to the display while troubleshooting. Soundbars, AV receivers, HDMI switches, capture devices, and other intermediaries can limit bandwidth or fail to pass a particular VRR or 120 Hz mode. Reintroduce an intermediary only after a direct connection is stable.
Review PS5 video-output settings
- Open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output.
- Check the selected resolution and the available information for the connected display.
- Review the 4K Video Transfer Rate option when it is available. If a particular transfer-rate setting causes instability, test the alternative setting and compare the result.
- Retest 4K, HDR, VRR, and 120 Hz one combination at a time.
A stable 4K/120 Hz link requires agreement among the console, display firmware, HDMI input, intermediary devices, and cable. A screen that simply reports “4K” may still be operating at a lower refresh rate than expected.
Step 7: use the right cable for a real signal-path problem
Sony recommends starting with the cable included with the PS5. When troubleshooting 4K/120 Hz output, use an Ultra High-Speed HDMI cable rated for 4K/120 Hz. This is a conditional signal-path requirement, not a general treatment for game-engine stutter or uneven frame delivery.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
- Reseat both ends of the cable and test the display’s correct high-bandwidth HDMI input.
- For diagnosis, connect the PS5 directly to the display and remove switches or receivers.
- If a replacement is necessary, verify the Ultra High-Speed rating and 4K/120 Hz capability rather than choosing solely by price or branding.
- After changing the cable, retest at the same resolution, refresh rate, and VRR setting.
If the signal is stable but motion in one game is still uneven, the cable was not the cause of that frame-pacing problem. Do not buy a premium cable as a promised stutter cure.
How to choose or evaluate a display for PS5 frame pacing
If you are comparing displays, evaluate the exact input and mode you will use rather than relying on a product’s headline refresh rate.
| Comparison point | Questions to answer | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| VRR implementation | Does the specific HDMI input explicitly support HDMI 2.1 VRR? | VRR cannot synchronize the PS5 if the input lacks the required capability. |
| Resolution and refresh combinations | Does that input accept the PS5’s desired 4K/120 Hz and VRR combinations? | A display may support a feature only at certain resolutions or on selected inputs. |
| Game compatibility | Does the affected title have a VRR optimization patch or native support? | Sony says VRR results vary by game, and some titles may need an update. |
| Firmware and compatibility notes | Is current firmware installed, and has the manufacturer documented limitations? | Firmware can change signal negotiation and VRR behavior. |
| Connection layout | Can the PS5 connect directly to the display during testing? | A direct path removes intermediary bandwidth and compatibility variables. |
A display upgrade can improve presentation only when it supports the required mode and works reliably with the affected game. It cannot guarantee that a game’s renderer will deliver even frame times.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A repeatable test that separates game stutter from signal trouble
- Write down the game version, PS5 system-software version, display model, HDMI input, and whether an intermediary device is in the path.
- Choose an offline scene that reliably shows the problem. Note whether the symptom is uneven motion, tearing, flicker, blanking, or a resolution/refresh fallback.
- Update the game and console, then replay the same scene without changing anything else.
- Record the current game graphics mode. Switch modes and replay the scene.
- With the same mode selected, enable VRR and replay the scene. Note whether tearing changes, motion becomes steadier, or new artifacts appear.
- If the game lacks native VRR support, test Apply to Unsupported Games; turn it off if unexpected behavior appears.
- Test 120 Hz only when the display and game support it. If output problems occur, disable 120 Hz Output and retest.
- For signal symptoms, connect the PS5 directly to the display, verify firmware and HDMI input, and test the included or correctly rated Ultra High-Speed cable.
Change only one variable between runs. A result such as “VRR removed tearing but the same traversal still hitches” is useful: it shows that presentation improved while the game’s frame-time behavior remains.

Assuming 120 Hz equals 120 frames per second
120 Hz is a display-output capability. A game may render at a different rate, use a variable rate, or offer no 120 Hz mode. Enable 120 Hz for a supported combination, but do not use the display setting as evidence that the game must render at 120 frames per second.

Leaving unsupported-game VRR enabled after artifacts appear
The option is explicitly experimental. Flicker, brightness changes, judder, or other unexpected behavior are reasons to disable it, not to keep adding unrelated settings.
Replacing a cable before checking the HDMI input
A correctly rated cable cannot make an incompatible HDMI input support 4K/120 Hz or VRR. Confirm the port and display firmware first, then replace the cable only when the signal path genuinely requires it.
Blaming every hitch on the network
Online delay can make a match feel unresponsive, but that is different from a local camera pan that delivers unevenly in an offline scene. Test offline before changing network equipment; the official guidance discussed here does not establish network lag as the cause of local frame pacing.
Changing several settings at once
If you switch graphics mode, VRR, 120 Hz, transfer rate, cable, and display input together, you cannot identify the cause. Restore a known baseline and change one item per test.
When to escalate a persistent problem
After updating the game and PS5, comparing the game’s modes, and testing relevant VRR and output settings on a known-good direct connection, a repeatable hitch in one title may be a title-specific frame-time issue. The official material does not identify a universal setting that resolves all such spikes.
Document the evidence before contacting support:
- Game title, game version, and the exact scene or activity.
- PS5 system-software version.
- Display model, HDMI input, firmware version, and whether a receiver, switch, or soundbar was bypassed.
- Resolution, VRR state, 120 Hz Output state, transfer-rate setting, and graphics mode.
- Whether the symptom is uneven motion, tearing, flicker, blanking, or an output downgrade.
- Which single change altered the behavior, if any.
Use that record when contacting the game’s publisher for a title-specific report or PlayStation Support for a console or video-output issue. A precise reproduction case is more actionable than describing every symptom as “stutter.”
What a successful result should look like
For a game-rendering problem, success means the same scene shows more consistent motion after an update, a game-specific mode change, or compatible VRR—not that every title reaches one universal frame rate. For tearing, success is a stable VRR connection with no visible tearing on the supported display. For a signal problem, success is a persistent, correctly negotiated resolution and refresh rate without flicker or blanking over a direct, properly rated HDMI path.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIf those outcomes do not occur, avoid treating a new cable, a 120 Hz toggle, or unsupported-game VRR as a guaranteed cure. The next useful step is to preserve the controlled-test results and escalate the repeatable title or equipment behavior to the appropriate support channel.
