Keep Linux’s CPU-specific Spectre mitigations enabled, run a supported kernel with current vendor microcode, and verify the protection state reported by the running system. This approach preserves normal performance features such as SMT whenever the selected mitigation supports them.
Check both Spectre status files, interpret the complete strings they return, and benchmark only your real workload under the security configuration you intend to operate. Do not use nospectre_v1, nospectre_v2, or spectre_v2=off as routine performance switches: the kernel documentation warns that disabling protections can allow data leaks.

What Spectre is and why Linux treats it as a configuration issue
Spectre is a family of speculative-execution side-channel attacks. A processor may execute instructions speculatively before it knows whether a branch or bounds check is valid. Although the speculative result is discarded architecturally when the prediction was wrong, traces can remain in microarchitectural state such as caches. Code that can measure those traces may infer data across a security boundary.

The current Linux kernel administrator documentation focuses on Spectre variant 1 and variant 2. Many high-performance processor families may be affected, but a CPU brand or model name alone does not tell you whether the running system is exposed. Vulnerability status depends on the processor, firmware or microcode, kernel version and configuration, compiler support, workload, and the attacker’s access to the machine.

Linux therefore reports its current understanding rather than a single permanent safe or unsafe label. A desktop running only trusted applications has a different threat model from a shared server, a build host that executes untrusted code, or a virtualization host that accepts guests from different parties.
Check the protections that are active now
The kernel exposes separate status files for the two variants. Read both and save the complete output before changing anything:
cat /sys/devices/system/cpu/vulnerabilities/spectre_v1
cat /sys/devices/system/cpu/vulnerabilities/spectre_v2
Examples documented by the kernel include Not affected, Mitigation: Retpolines, and Mitigation: LFENCE. Preserve any additional wording, because it can identify the mitigation path and whether hardware or software support is being used. Do not reduce the result to a simplistic vulnerable/not-vulnerable conclusion.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThese files describe what the running kernel believes about the CPU and which protections it has enabled. They are not a guarantee that every possible attack path is covered. In particular, variant 1 protections are applied case by case, and the kernel documentation cautions that they may not cover every possible vector.
Record the context with the status
When troubleshooting or comparing a change, record the kernel release, processor model, whether the machine is a guest or a host, and the complete two status strings. A status can change after a kernel, firmware, or microcode update, so a note that omits this context is difficult to interpret later.
Use supported kernel and microcode updates
Run the kernel supplied and supported by your Linux distribution or operating-system vendor, and apply CPU firmware or microcode updates through that vendor’s supported update route. The Spectre v2 mitigation decision can depend on CPU features exposed by microcode; installing a kernel without the corresponding firmware can therefore produce a different protection state from the one intended by the kernel developers.
There is no universal update command for every distribution, machine or firmware vendor. Follow the update procedure documented for your distribution and hardware, then reboot when that procedure requires it and re-read both vulnerability files. Avoid mixing an experimental kernel or an unofficial microcode package into a production security decision unless you can verify its provenance, support status and rollback path.

How Linux chooses mitigations without turning off performance features
The Linux Kernel documentation states: “In general the kernel selects reasonable default mitigations for the current CPU.” Those defaults are designed to match the processor’s reported vulnerability and available features rather than applying the most expensive setting to every machine.
Spectre variant 1
Variant 1 defenses are case-specific. Depending on the vulnerable code path, the kernel can use bounds-checking sequences and speculation barriers. A status line that shows a mitigation means the kernel has enabled protections for the cases it knows about; it does not establish absolute immunity against every future or application-specific side channel.
Spectre variant 2
Variant 2 defenses can use retpoline or hardware mitigations when the processor and microcode provide the necessary features. The default command-line behavior, spectre_v2=auto, selects a mitigation according to the CPU, available hardware and microcode features, kernel configuration and compiler support.
Forcing a different variant-2 mode can change the protection scope. Treat such a change as a documented security decision, not as a generic tuning recommendation. After any deliberate change, inspect the status file again and test the workload under the exact configuration that will remain in service.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →User-to-user controls
Some protections are aimed at one user process attacking another rather than at a process attacking the kernel. The spectre_v2_user control has documented modes including on, off and prctl. The prctl mode allows process-level mitigation control, which can be useful when only selected programs need the extra isolation. Exact option behavior is kernel-version dependent, so verify the command-line documentation for the kernel you are deploying before relying on a particular mode.
Compare choices by the attack path
A useful comparison starts with the boundary an attacker is trying to cross, not with the name of a boot parameter. Kernel defenses address a user process attacking kernel code. User-to-user controls address one process inferring data from another. Cross-thread controls address activity on sibling SMT threads. A virtual-machine host must additionally consider guest-to-host and guest-to-guest paths. A mitigation that is appropriate for one boundary does not automatically cover the others.
| Control or status | What it represents | Security and performance implication |
|---|---|---|
/sys/devices/system/cpu/vulnerabilities/spectre_v1 |
Kernel assessment and active protections for variant 1 | Case-specific defenses; the status is not a promise that every attack vector is covered |
/sys/devices/system/cpu/vulnerabilities/spectre_v2 |
Kernel assessment and active protections for variant 2 | May identify retpoline or hardware mitigation selected for the CPU |
spectre_v2=auto |
Default automatic variant-2 selection | Lets the kernel choose using CPU, microcode and available software or hardware features |
spectre_v2_user=prctl |
Process-level user-to-user mitigation control | Allows targeted policy, but requires deliberate per-process security management |
nospectre_v1, nospectre_v2, spectre_v2=off |
Disable classes of Spectre protections | The kernel warns that data leaks may be possible; do not use as routine tuning |
When comparing two acceptable configurations, document five things: the protected attack path, CPU and microcode support, whether the policy is system-wide or process-specific, the trust assumptions, and the capacity or performance trade-off. This prevents an apparently faster setting from being judged without its security scope.

A performance-conscious decision path
- Define the trust boundary. Decide whether the machine runs only trusted programs, serves multiple users, executes untrusted code, or hosts virtual machines. These cases expose different attack paths.
- Capture the baseline. Save both vulnerability-file outputs, the kernel release and the CPU or virtual-CPU details. Record whether SMT is enabled and whether the system is a virtualization host or guest.
- Apply supported updates. Update the distribution-supported kernel and vendor-provided microcode or firmware. Recheck the status files after the system is running the updated components.
- Identify the active mitigation. Read the complete status strings. A retpoline, LFENCE or hardware mitigation can have different costs and coverage, so do not assume that two systems with the same CPU family have identical behavior.
- Measure the real workload. Use the application’s normal benchmark or service-level measurements with the same data, concurrency, storage and scheduling conditions. Compare runs with mitigations enabled; do not disable protections merely to create an attractive but unsafe number.
- Investigate a measured regression. Determine whether the cost comes from a system-wide kernel path, user-to-user protection, cross-thread isolation or virtualization. Consider a targeted process policy only when the trust model supports it and the current kernel documentation confirms the setting.
- Document the decision. Record the threat model, status strings, kernel and microcode versions, test conditions and any command-line parameters. This prevents a future administrator from treating a temporary experiment as an approved security baseline.
Requirements, costs and practical trade-offs
The basic controls require no replacement CPU or security utility. They require a supported Linux kernel, the firmware or microcode package provided through the distribution or hardware vendor, a reboot when updates need one, and permission to inspect the running system. On managed fleets, the operational cost is usually change scheduling, validation and rollback planning rather than a new physical purchase.

Performance cost is workload-specific. Retpolines, speculation barriers, IBPB and STIBP can add execution or context-switch overhead in the paths where they are active. Disabling SMT can reduce the number of logical CPUs and therefore parallel capacity. The kernel guidance does not provide a universal percentage, so a figure measured on one processor, kernel and application must not be presented as a general expectation.
For a latency-sensitive service, keep the security setting fixed while measuring tail latency, throughput and CPU utilization. For a batch workload, measure completion time and queue depth. For a multi-tenant host, include the number of guests or users that can run concurrently. These measurements show the cost of the mitigation actually selected, rather than the cost of an unrelated unsafe configuration.
Do you need to disable SMT?
No blanket rule requires disabling simultaneous multithreading (SMT) on every Linux system. SMT presents multiple logical CPUs on a physical core, so some cross-thread attack paths can use a sibling thread. The kernel’s attack-vector guidance also documents mitigations that operate without disabling SMT, including process-specific controls in suitable situations.
Disabling SMT can be relevant when the chosen protection for a particular cross-thread path requires it. The trade-off is concrete: fewer logical CPUs are available, which can reduce parallel capacity and performance. The cost depends on the workload, and the kernel documentation does not provide a universal percentage that applies to all processors or applications.
| Attack path to evaluate | Controls discussed by the kernel guidance | Capacity consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Kernel attack from a user process | Variant-specific kernel mitigations selected for the CPU | Usually evaluated through the active status and workload benchmark |
| User process attacking another user process | IBPB, STIBP and user-to-user policy such as spectre_v2_user |
Process-specific controls can add overhead; exact impact depends on scheduling and workload |
| Cross-thread activity on SMT siblings | STIBP or, for some vectors, disabling SMT | Disabling SMT reduces available logical CPU capacity |
| Guest-to-host or guest-to-guest activity | Virtualization-specific protections, including STIBP requirements in some SMT environments | Evaluate host capacity and isolation requirements together |
Choose SMT policy from the attack vector, not from a slogan. A trusted desktop may keep SMT enabled with the kernel defaults. A multi-tenant service may require stronger cross-thread isolation, even if that lowers capacity. The correct choice is the one that matches the data and code crossing the boundary.
Virtual machines need a separate threat-model check
Virtualization adds guest-to-host and guest-to-guest boundaries that do not exist on a single-user workstation. The kernel’s VMSCAPE documentation says existing user-space Spectre v2 mitigation alone is insufficient to protect user-space virtual-machine monitors against a malicious guest. In SMT environments, it describes STIBP as necessary for complete protection in that scenario.

For a virtualization host, ask four separate questions:
- Can a guest deliberately run code designed to infer host data?
- Can one guest attack another guest that shares a physical core?
- Does the virtual-machine monitor run as a user-space process?
- Is SMT enabled, and does the selected protection cover the relevant sibling-thread path?
A status line for the host’s ordinary user-to-kernel path does not by itself answer those questions. Review the virtualization-specific guidance for the kernel version in use and verify that the monitor’s deployment policy matches the threat model.
Process-specific policies: when they help and when they do not
A process-level policy can focus stronger user-to-user protection on selected applications instead of imposing the same behavior on every process. That can be useful for a service that handles secrets beside less-sensitive workloads, but it is not an excuse to leave a shared system unexamined. The administrator must know which programs need protection and ensure that their launch policy actually applies it.
Process controls also do not replace kernel mitigations for a user-to-kernel path, and they do not automatically answer a guest-to-host question. Treat spectre_v2_user=prctl as a policy mechanism whose exact semantics depend on the deployed kernel. Confirm the current kernel command-line documentation, test the intended process behavior, and record the policy with the service configuration.
How to interpret common outcomes
Not affected
This means the running kernel does not consider that variant applicable to the detected CPU and configuration. Keep the result with the CPU and kernel context; replacing a processor, changing firmware, or booting a different kernel can change the assessment.
Mitigation: Retpolines
The kernel is using retpoline-based protection for the reported path. Do not infer that retpoline is the only protection relevant to other paths or that it removes the need for microcode updates.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Mitigation: LFENCE
The kernel is using an LFENCE-based speculation barrier for the reported path. As with every status string, read the complete output and consider the separate variant-1 and variant-2 files.
Best Value
A result that does not match expectations
First confirm that you are reading the running system’s files, not a mounted filesystem from another installation or container. Then check that the supported kernel and microcode update actually booted, and capture the complete strings again. If the result still differs from vendor guidance, consult the distribution and kernel documentation for that exact release rather than forcing a command-line override.
Practices that create avoidable risk
- Disabling mitigations for a benchmark: A faster unsafe run does not show what production performance will be with protections enabled.
- Assuming a CPU brand proves safety: Spectre status is model, firmware and kernel dependent.
- Reading only one status file: Variant 1 and variant 2 have different defenses and may report different states.
- Treating SMT as universally bad: Some vectors need stronger cross-thread controls, while others can be mitigated with SMT left on.
- Applying a desktop rule to a hypervisor: Guest threats require virtualization-specific analysis.
- Quoting a universal performance percentage: No single figure covers every CPU, kernel, microcode version and workload.
- Using undocumented boot parameters: A parameter can alter protection scope in ways that are not obvious from its name. Use only settings documented for the current kernel and record the reason.
- Assuming an update is active because it was installed: Verify the running kernel, reboot state and status files after maintenance.
- Comparing unlike tests: Different data sets, concurrency, schedulers or storage can hide the real mitigation cost.
Operational checklist
- Read and save both Spectre vulnerability status files.
- Keep the distribution-supported kernel in service.
- Apply CPU firmware or microcode through the supported vendor route.
- Confirm that
spectre_v2=autoor another deliberate policy is documented. - Do not use
nospectre_v1,nospectre_v2orspectre_v2=offas routine performance tuning. - Benchmark the real workload with mitigations enabled.
- Evaluate IBPB, STIBP and process-level controls when user-to-user or cross-thread threats matter.
- Keep SMT enabled unless a specific attack path and documented mitigation decision justify disabling it.
- For virtual machines, analyze guest-to-host, guest-to-guest and cross-thread paths separately.
- Recheck status after every kernel, microcode or command-line change.
- Document versions, threat assumptions, measured impact and rollback steps.
Scope and changing guidance
Linux kernel mitigation behavior and CPU support evolve. The guidance summarized here reflects the kernel’s rolling administrator documentation accessed on October 11, 2026, and is not a distribution-specific support matrix. Before making a machine-wide change, check the current kernel documentation and the update guidance for the distribution, processor and virtualization stack you actually operate.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I check whether Spectre mitigations are enabled in Linux?
Read both /sys/devices/system/cpu/vulnerabilities/spectre_v1 and /sys/devices/system/cpu/vulnerabilities/spectre_v2. Save the complete strings, along with the running kernel and CPU or virtual-CPU details. Messages such as Not affected, Mitigation: Retpolines and Mitigation: LFENCE have different meanings, so do not collapse them into a single yes-or-no label.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchDo I need to disable SMT to mitigate Spectre?
No. Some cross-thread attack paths may require disabling SMT, while other protections, including STIBP or targeted process controls, can operate with SMT enabled. Disabling SMT reduces available logical CPU capacity, so make the decision from the specific attack path and trust model.
Is spectre_v2=auto safe to leave enabled?
It is the documented default behavior that lets Linux choose a variant-2 mitigation based on the CPU, microcode, hardware features, kernel configuration and compiler support. Keep the automatic policy unless you have a documented reason to use another mode, and verify the resulting status string after boot.
Can I use nospectre_v1 or nospectre_v2 for better performance?
These parameters disable classes of protection, and the kernel warns that data leaks may be possible. They should not be routine tuning switches. If performance is a concern, benchmark the real workload with the supported mitigations enabled and investigate which attack path or control contributes to the measured cost.
Are Linux Spectre status files a guarantee that the system is immune?
No. They report the kernel’s assessment and active protections for each variant. Variant 1 defenses are case-specific, and a status for one path does not answer user-to-user, cross-thread or virtualization questions. Keep the threat model and complete status context with the result.
What additional checks are needed on a virtualization host?
Evaluate guest-to-host, guest-to-guest and cross-thread paths separately. The kernel’s VMSCAPE guidance says ordinary user-space Spectre v2 mitigation alone is insufficient for a user-space virtual-machine monitor facing a malicious guest, and it identifies STIBP as necessary for complete protection in some SMT environments.
The Bottom Line
Keep the supported kernel’s automatic Spectre mitigations and vendor microcode updates in place, then verify both vulnerability files on the running system. Preserve SMT when the selected protections cover your threat model, use process-specific controls only deliberately, and disable SMT or any mitigation only when a documented attack-path analysis justifies the capacity cost. Never trade away protections for an unrepresentative benchmark.
