Start by identifying the pest and reviewing field history; then combine prevention with a treatment suited to the crop, region, target pest, and available time and equipment. California strawberry guidance offers the most detailed treatment evidence here; raspberry recommendations differ, and the same methods should not be assumed to work for every berry crop.
Start by identifying the pest and reviewing the field
“Soil pests” can mean soilborne pathogens, nematodes, weeds, or insects. The approaches below are best supported for soilborne disease, nematodes, and weeds; they are not a general control program for every soil-dwelling insect. A treatment that reduces one pathogen or weed may leave another unaffected—or may not suit the crop at all.

Check the crop and the problem first
- Record the crop, cultivar, affected area, and symptoms, and seek a reliable diagnosis before choosing a treatment. UC IPM’s strawberry preplant guidance emphasizes considering the soilborne pathogens present in the field.
- Review field history: prior crops, disease problems, weed pressure, and any nematode information. For raspberry sites, prior susceptible crops can matter for Verticillium wilt risk; previous land use can also help determine whether a nematode survey is warranted.
- Ask a local extension adviser which organisms are important in your crop and region, and whether sampling is appropriate. A strategy based on California strawberries should not be treated as proven for raspberries or blackberries.
Build prevention into the plan
UC Statewide IPM Program guidance describes sanitation and prevention as key parts of nonfumigant soilborne disease management in strawberry production. Use clean planting material, avoid moving infested soil between fields, and wash soil from tractors, equipment, and tools before moving them into clean areas. Choose a cultivar suited to the production conditions and the pathogens known to be present; UC IPM calls cultivar choice especially critical in nonfumigated strawberry soils. Good drainage and site suitability belong in the same preventive assessment, rather than being treated as a substitute for pest diagnosis.
Choose a method that matches the target and the site
The methods differ in what they can suppress, how long they take, and what they require. The figures below are source-specific examples, not universal application prescriptions.

| Method | What the cited guidance says it may address | Conditions and constraints | Evidence scope |
|---|---|---|---|
| Solarization | Soilborne disease organisms and viable weed seeds when soil heats sufficiently. | UC IPM describes clear plastic over shaped beds in summer. In consistently hot regions it cites 30–45 days with soil at least 122°F; on California’s Central Coast it may take 12–15 weeks, so it is usually impractical there. | UC Statewide IPM Program strawberry guidance, text updated 07/23; regional timing is not a universal berry-crop schedule. |
| Steam | Heat treatment of soil and pests; the cited guidance describes soil held at approximately 160°F for 20 minutes. | Fuel use, labor, and application time have hindered adoption. Equipment needs and operating costs are not stated by the source as a standard figure. | UC Statewide IPM Program strawberry guidance, text updated 07/23. |
| Anaerobic soil disinfestation (ASD) | UC IPM reports benefits against Verticillium wilt and many broadleaf annual weeds in some California strawberry settings. | Requires a readily degradable carbon source, water, plastic-covered beds, and several weeks of anaerobic conditions. Outcomes depend on carbon source and rate, soil temperature, water-holding capacity, and treatment duration. | Detailed guidance concerns California strawberries; NC State Extension explains factors affecting ASD performance. |
| Cover crops or seed meals | Mustard cover crops and seed meals have reduced weeds and nematodes at some sites; preplant rye or sudangrass are recommended in raspberry guidance for weed suppression and organic matter. | Effects are not interchangeable: pathogen control has been inconsistent in the cited strawberry work, seed meals can injure strawberry at high rates close to transplanting, and some cover crops or weeds host root lesion nematode. | UC IPM, Penn State Extension, and Washington State University Extension discuss different crops and purposes; local fit matters. |
| Rotation and site selection | Can reduce risk from susceptible-crop histories in raspberry production; grass-family rotation crops such as oats and wheat are cited as useful after certain susceptible crops. | Penn State advises five to eight years in a non-Verticillium-susceptible crop after specified susceptible crops before raspberry planting. The recommendation depends on crop history and is not a universal interval for all berries or pests. | Penn State Extension, Raspberry Production, accessed 2026-10-07. |
Use solarization only where summer heat and time allow
Solarization works by trapping heat beneath clear plastic placed over pre-shaped beds. It is therefore a poor fit when the local summer is not hot enough, the preplant window is short, or the field cannot remain covered for the required period. The UC IPM figures in the table reflect its guidance for suitable California conditions; even there, the much longer Central Coast period makes solarization usually impractical. Confirm local soil-heating potential and crop timing with regional extension guidance before committing a field to the method.
Understand what ASD can—and cannot—do
How the treatment is structured
In the UC-described California strawberry system, a readily degradable carbon source such as rice bran is incorporated into the upper 12–24 inches of soil. Beds are formed, drip irrigation supplies water, and the beds are covered with plastic to maintain anaerobic conditions for 3–5 weeks. Tears and holes should be repaired because aeration undermines the intended conditions. UC IPM reports rice bran commonly used at 6–9 tons per acre in that California system; this is a source-specific practice, not a general rate for other crops, soils, or regions.

Match expectations to the pathogen and soil
ASD is not a broad-spectrum guarantee. UC IPM says typical autumn coastal strawberry ASD does not control important pathogens including Fusarium wilt, caused by Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. fragariae, and Macrophomina phaseolina. It advises avoiding autumn ASD where Fusarium wilt has occurred because the pathogen may reproduce on the added carbon source and worsen disease. ASD also has limited efficacy on perennial weeds.
NC State Extension notes that ASD performance varies with the carbon material and rate, length of the anaerobic period, soil temperature, and water-holding capacity. Researchers have evaluated agricultural byproducts, bran, compost, poultry litter, and cover crops as carbon materials; their evaluation does not mean those inputs are interchangeable or validated for every berry system. Check crop-specific and local guidance before selecting a material or rate.

For raspberries, use crop history and nematode information carefully
Penn State Extension recommends avoiding raspberry sites with recent histories of susceptible crops. After specified susceptible crops, its Raspberry Production guidance advises five to eight years in a crop that is not susceptible to Verticillium; oats and wheat are examples of useful grass-family rotation crops in that setting. This is a regional, crop-specific recommendation, not a universal rotation rule.
If nematodes are a concern, a survey may be appropriate depending on prior land use. Penn State identifies rapeseed plowed under as green manure as one option where nematodes are present. But cover crops need careful selection: Washington State University Extension warns that many available cover crops and weeds can host root lesion nematode in raspberry systems, and notes uncertainty or a lack of raspberry-specific testing for some approaches. Do not assume that a crop used for soil improvement will also suppress the nematode of concern.

Decide whether a treatment is practical before planting
Before selecting a treatment, compare its target and field fit rather than ranking methods as universally better or worse. A useful plan accounts for:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Target organism: Is the main concern a pathogen, nematode, weed, or insect, and is that organism among those the method may affect?
- Crop and region: Does the evidence apply to this berry crop and production area, or is it based on a different system such as California strawberries?
- Field history: Have susceptible crops or relevant diseases occurred on the site? Is there enough information to justify testing?
- Window and climate: Can the field accommodate the treatment duration and seasonal conditions? Solarization and ASD both depend on time and suitable conditions.
- Inputs and equipment: Can the operation supply and manage plastic, water, carbon incorporation, or steam equipment as required?
- Weed type and pathogen identity: Distinguish annual from perennial weeds and verify pathogen-specific cautions before treating.
- Evidence for the production system: Prefer recommendations tested or described for the crop and region in question; where raspberry-specific evidence is uncertain, treat that uncertainty as part of the decision.
For a farm-level plan, combine a sound diagnosis, field records, and locally relevant extension advice. A soil treatment is only one component of nonfumigant management, not a replacement for cultivar choice, sanitation, and an informed site decision.
