Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteTo reduce slippage and failed transactions during congestion, protect the minimum output you will accept, compare that limit with the pool’s liquidity and expected price impact, and use a fee estimate that is high enough for timely inclusion. Do not solve every revert by raising slippage tolerance: that can turn a failed trade into an unexpectedly bad fill.
The mechanics below use Ethereum and Uniswap documentation where those sources provide concrete controls. Wallets, decentralized exchanges, tokens and other chains may expose different settings, so treat the interface labels as examples rather than universal rules.

What slippage is—and what it is not
Slippage is the difference between the price shown when you submit a swap and the price at which it executes. The quote can change while your transaction waits for confirmation, or the trade itself can move the pool’s price. Thin liquidity and large orders make that movement more pronounced. Uniswap’s explanation of slippage describes tolerance as the maximum price difference you agree to accept between submission and execution: if the market moves beyond that boundary, the swap should not execute.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Slippage is an execution-price issue, not the same thing as a network fee. Gas pays validators or sequencers for processing a transaction; slippage changes how much of one asset you receive for another. Congestion can affect both because a delayed transaction has more time to encounter price movement and often costs more to include.

A swap can therefore fail with a perfectly adequate balance if its minimum-output condition is no longer true. Conversely, a swap can succeed while giving you a much worse price if the tolerance is set too loosely.
Why congestion increases the chance of a bad outcome
Pending transactions face a moving market
When blocks are full, a transaction offering a relatively low fee may wait longer. During that wait, arbitrageurs and other traders can move the relevant pool price. If the movement exceeds your tolerance, the contract reverts rather than delivering less than your allowed minimum. A higher tolerance makes execution more likely, but it also authorizes a wider range of prices.
Liquidity determines how far your own order moves the price
Pool depth is the amount of tradable liquidity near the current price. A deep pool can generally absorb a given order with less price impact than a shallow pool. Your trade size matters relative to that depth: an order that is modest in a major pool can be large enough to move the price substantially in a small pool.
Before confirming, inspect the interface’s liquidity information and expected price impact. Uniswap’s guidance recommends reconsidering a trade when liquidity is shallow, reducing the order size, or splitting a large order into smaller chunks. Splitting may reduce the impact of each transaction, but it is not a guaranteed improvement: each transaction can incur its own network fee, the market can move between chunks, and the route may change.

Slippage tolerance: the central trade-off
| Setting choice | Protection | Failure risk | What to decide |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tighter tolerance | Limits the worst execution price more strictly | A relatively small market move can make the transaction revert | Whether avoiding a poor fill is worth waiting or retrying |
| Looser tolerance | Allows the transaction to execute through a wider price movement | You may receive materially less than the quote | The maximum loss you can genuinely accept, not a number chosen just to stop errors |
There is no universal “correct” percentage. Volatility, pool depth, trade size, route and the time you can wait all matter. The percentages sometimes shown in educational examples are not blanket recommendations. For example, Uniswap’s guide uses a fictional low-liquidity token scenario with 1% or more and a deep stablecoin-pool scenario with 0.05%; those figures illustrate different conditions, not a prescription for every token.
Set the tolerance from the minimum output you can accept. If that minimum would make the trade unattractive, cancel or resize the order instead of silently permitting a worse price. A swap that exceeds the configured tolerance may remain pending or fail while still consuming network fees, as Uniswap explains in its general slippage overview: https://blog.uniswap.org/what-is-slippage-crypto.
A pre-submit procedure for a congested network
- Confirm the asset and network. Make sure the wallet is connected to the chain on which the token and liquidity actually exist. A compatible Layer 2 is not interchangeable with Mainnet unless the application and assets support it.
- Read the quoted output. Record the amount the interface estimates you will receive and the minimum output after tolerance is applied. If the minimum is below your acceptable value, stop before signing.
- Inspect price impact and liquidity. A high impact warning or shallow pool is a reason to reduce the trade, split it cautiously, choose another supported route, or wait—not an automatic reason to raise tolerance.
- Choose tolerance deliberately. Set the maximum movement you are willing to absorb. Do not increase it merely because a previous attempt reverted.
- Check for a limit-order option. Where the pair and interface support one, a limit order can specify an acceptable price instead of accepting a quote that moves while you wait. Availability and behavior are pair- and interface-dependent.
- Review the network-fee estimate. On Ethereum, compare the wallet’s current estimate with the congestion shown by the wallet or a gas-estimation service such as the one referenced by Uniswap and ethereum.org. Avoid lowering the fee simply to save a small amount during a busy period.
- Verify the gas limit has not been reduced too far. A gas limit is a cap on the gas the transaction may consume. It is separate from the price paid per unit of gas.
- Simulate the decision in dollars or tokens you understand. Translate the minimum output into the loss you would accept if the market moves to that boundary. If the number is uncomfortable, do not sign.
Ethereum fees and failed transactions
Ethereum’s fee model combines the amount of gas an operation consumes with the cost per unit of gas. The cost includes a base fee and a priority fee; the priority portion is influenced by demand. Ethereum.org explains the formula and the effect of congestion in its Ethereum fees guide and technical gas documentation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe important operational consequence is that a failed transaction can still cost ETH. Ethereum.org states: “The gas fee is the amount of gas used to do some operation, multiplied by the cost per unit gas. The fee is paid regardless of whether a transaction succeeds or fails.” Retrying immediately can therefore charge you again without fixing the underlying price, liquidity or fee problem.

Illustrative gas-unit figures
Ethereum.org publishes the following illustrative gas-unit amounts. They are not current fee quotes, do not include the ETH price, and are not universal requirements for every implementation.
| Operation | Illustrative gas units | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Send ETH | 21,000 | Example figure from Ethereum.org; actual transaction conditions can differ |
| Send an ERC-20 token | 65,000 | Example figure from Ethereum.org; token contracts vary |
| Transfer an NFT | 84,904 | Example figure from Ethereum.org; contract implementation and state affect usage |
| Swap on Uniswap | 184,523 | Example figure from Ethereum.org; route, pool and contract state affect usage |
These figures describe gas consumption, not whether a transaction will succeed and not what you should bid during a particular block. No general success-rate statistic can be inferred from them.
Fee controls: base fee, priority fee and gas limit
Base fee and maximum base fee
On EIP-1559-style Ethereum transactions, the base fee is set by the network. A wallet may let you specify a maximum base fee you are willing to pay. The Uniswap Wallet support documentation says that if its maximum base fee is below the network’s current base fee, the transaction cannot go through. Setting it higher gives the transaction room to be included, but any unused portion is not a reason to overpay blindly.
Priority fee
The priority fee is an additional incentive for inclusion. During demand spikes, a higher priority fee can make a transaction more competitive, but it does not repair an invalid swap, insufficient balance, expired approval or slippage condition. It only addresses inclusion economics.

Gas limit
The gas limit caps how much gas execution may consume. Setting it below what the contract call needs can make the call fail after consuming the gas used up to that point. Raising it does not force a bad trade to succeed; it only permits more execution work, and an unused limit is not the same as a fee you necessarily spend.
Uniswap Wallet documents controls for maximum base fee, priority fee and gas limit, along with an automatic estimate intended to reflect current market prices. Those controls apply to that wallet’s documented interface; another wallet may calculate or label them differently. Its support guidance summarizes the risk plainly: “In general, if fees are set too low, your transaction may take longer to confirm or could fail during periods of high network activity.” See the wallet’s network-cost documentation.

Wait for calmer conditions
Waiting can reduce the chance of paying peak fees and may give a pool a less volatile price. It is not a guarantee: prices can continue moving, and a later quote may be worse. If the transaction is not time-sensitive, compare the current quote and expected impact with conditions later rather than repeatedly submitting the same order.
Reduce or split the order
For a large trade in a shallow pool, reduce the amount or split it into chunks only after comparing the extra fees and the possibility of price movement between transactions. The objective is to reduce the order’s impact on the pool, not to guarantee a better aggregate execution.
Best Value
Use a supported Layer 2
Ethereum.org describes Layer 2 networks as processing transactions away from Mainnet and notes that higher throughput can reduce Mainnet congestion and rollups can lower user gas fees. Designs differ in operation, batching and security. Before switching, verify all of the following:
- Your wallet supports the network and displays the correct chain.
- The decentralized exchange or application has a deployment there.
- The exact token is issued or bridged there in the form the application expects.
- You understand any deposit, withdrawal or bridge delay and its separate risks.
- You are not assuming that lower fees eliminate price impact, contract risk or market volatility.
Layer 2 is a compatibility and execution decision, not a universal escape from failed transactions. Ethereum’s overview of the design trade-offs is available at https://ethereum.org/developers/docs/scaling/.
What to do after a transaction fails
Identify the failure before retrying
- Slippage or price-impact revert: Recheck the quote, liquidity and minimum output. Resize, wait or choose a supported limit order rather than automatically widening tolerance.
- Fee too low or still pending: Check whether the transaction is pending, replaceable or already mined. Do not send duplicate trades while the first may still execute.
- Gas-limit failure: Review the wallet’s estimated gas and restore an appropriate limit. A higher limit cannot correct a contract-level rejection.
- Insufficient balance: Leave enough of the native asset for gas in addition to the swap amount.
- Approval or contract error: Confirm that the token approval is for the correct spender and network, and read the wallet’s exact error before signing another transaction.
Account for the cost
Because gas can be charged on failure, add the failed transaction’s cost to the economics of any retry. If the market has moved, recalculate the minimum output and price impact from the new quote. A retry made with the old tolerance and old fee assumptions may simply fail again—or execute at a price you no longer accept.

Common mistakes that create avoidable losses
- Using a huge tolerance as a universal fix. This removes the price-protection boundary and can authorize a materially worse fill, especially in volatile or illiquid pairs.
- Confusing a pending transaction with a failed trade. Submitting another swap can create duplicate exposure if the first one later confirms.
- Lowering the gas limit to reduce cost. A lower cap can stop execution after gas has already been consumed.
- Assuming a low network fee means a cheap transaction overall. A delayed transaction can encounter more price movement, and a failed attempt can still cost gas.
- Ignoring pool depth. A favorable quote in a shallow pool may carry significant price impact once the full order is executed.
- Treating example percentages as rules. The 0.05% and 1% examples in Uniswap’s educational material describe hypothetical deep and shallow pools, not a standard setting.
- Switching networks without checking support. The same wallet address does not mean the application, token contract and liquidity are available on every chain.
A compact decision framework
| Situation | First action | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Small trade, deep pool, modest impact | Use a tolerance matching your actual acceptable movement and the wallet’s current fee estimate | There is less reason to authorize a wide price range |
| Large trade, shallow pool | Reduce or split the order and compare the resulting costs | Trade size is a major source of price impact |
| Price moving rapidly | Wait, reduce size or use a supported limit order | A moving quote can cross your minimum output before inclusion |
| Ethereum Mainnet congestion | Review base-fee and priority-fee estimates; consider a compatible Layer 2 | Inclusion cost and delay are network conditions, separate from slippage |
| Repeated revert | Read the exact error and recalculate the trade | Blind retries can spend more gas without changing the cause |
Final pre-sign checklist
- The selected chain, token contract and trading pair are correct.
- The quoted output and minimum output are both visible.
- Pool liquidity and expected price impact are acceptable for the order size.
- The tolerance represents a loss you can actually accept.
- A limit order is considered if the quote is moving and the interface supports one.
- The fee estimate reflects current congestion, and the gas limit has not been set below the required execution estimate.
- You have enough native currency for gas and understand that failure can still consume it.
- You will not submit a duplicate transaction while an earlier one remains pending.
These checks cannot make a transaction failure-proof. They can, however, separate the decisions that protect your execution price from the decisions that help a transaction get included, which is the key to avoiding an expensive “fix” that merely replaces a revert with a bad fill.
