Start by finding the noise path: continuous fan or airflow noise, a loose-part rattle, and vibration carried through a rack, shelf, wall, or floor need different fixes. Secure rattling parts, address vibration at its support, and consider absorption, a barrier, or an acoustic enclosure only after checking that the equipment can still shed heat. A quiet closet is not worth overheating a server.
Identify what is making the noise
Listen near the equipment and along its supports before buying materials. The distinction matters because treatment that helps one noise path may do little for another.

- Rattle: A panel, door, drive, cable, or rack component may be loose or touching another surface.
- Fan or airflow noise: A steady whoosh or whine may come from fans, turbulent air at an intake or exhaust, a grille, or high air velocity. The U.S. Department of Commerce’s older homeowner guide notes that ventilation grilles and high air velocity can themselves create objectionable noise: Quieting: A Home Owner’s Practical Guide to Noise Control.
- Structure-borne vibration: If the rack, shelf, floor, or wall carries a buzz or hum, the equipment may be transmitting vibration through a rigid connection.
- Room reflections: A closet with hard surfaces can make airborne sound seem more prominent through reverberation, even when the source is unchanged.
NIOSH’s engineering-controls guidance recommends matching the control to the noise path, including securing loose parts, isolating vibration, and using absorption, barriers, or enclosures where appropriate: Implement Engineering Controls.
Fix rattles and vibration at the source
Secure loose parts first
With equipment safely shut down when required by its manual, check rack panels, doors, shelves, fasteners, and cable runs for movement or contact that can produce a rattle. Secure loose parts and keep cables from tapping against panels or each other. Avoid changes that obstruct service access or interfere with the equipment’s mounting and safety requirements.

Isolate vibration only with suitable mounts
Resilient pads, rubber mounts, grommets, or isolators can reduce vibration transmitted into a support, but the choice depends on the equipment’s weight and how it is mounted. NIOSH warns: “Consult the manufacturer or an expert to select the correct vibration isolation, as the wrong mounts can actually increase vibration.” Its advice, and the general recommendations for rubber mounts and resilient pads in the U.S. Department of Commerce homeowner guide, are not a guarantee for every server or rack.
Do not put soft pads beneath a rack or device unless the support remains stable and the mounting arrangement is appropriate for the load. If vibration worsens, or the equipment becomes unstable, remove the change and consult the hardware or rack manufacturer.

Use absorption, barriers, or an enclosure for airborne sound
Sound-absorbing material can reduce reflections and reverberation in a room; it does not block sound in the same way as a barrier or enclosure. A barrier close to the source may reduce some higher-frequency sound, but NIOSH notes that barriers can be less effective against low-frequency noise. An enclosure can block some sound, but its usefulness depends on the source, frequency, construction, and installation.

Purpose-built acoustic rack example
APC by Schneider Electric lists a NetShelter Soundproof 17U, 120V, Maple (AR4017A). The manufacturer says its NetShelter Soundproof range achieves 18.5 dB(A) noise reduction; this is a vendor claim, not independent comparative testing, and it is not a guaranteed result for every installation. Check that the rack’s dimensions, load capacity, electrical configuration, cooling approach, and local availability suit the equipment. Schneider Electric’s U.S. listing showed the AR4017A as “Non-Stock – Not normally stocked in distribution facility” when referenced, so confirm current status and configuration directly: APC NetShelter Soundproof 17U product page and Schneider Electric U.S. listing.
Keep cooling air moving
Do not seal an operating server into a closet or cabinet without a cooling plan. Follow the installation guide for the exact hardware, including its clearance and airflow requirements. For example, HPE’s ProLiant DL145 Gen11 guide describes cool air entering at the front and warm air exiting at the rear, and warns against blocking ventilation openings in that model-family context: Space and airflow requirements. Requirements for other systems may differ.

Rack blanking panels address airflow bypass, not noise directly. ENERGY STAR explains that panels cover unused rack spaces so cold air passes through equipment rather than bypassing it. Its page says a single 12-inch blanking panel can reduce rack temperatures by 20°F; that figure is presented in a data-center airflow-efficiency context, not as a guaranteed result for a home closet: Manage Airflow for Cooling Efficiency.
After any change, monitor equipment temperatures and fan behavior against the hardware’s own guidance. If temperatures rise or fans speed up, stop and restore airflow; the acceptable limits and clearances depend on the specific equipment and room.

Choose a fix that matches the problem
| Measure | Best fit | Key trade-off or check |
|---|---|---|
| Secure loose parts and cables | Rattles from panels, doors, fasteners, or cable contact | Preserve safe mounting, service access, and ventilation. |
| Resilient mounts or isolators | Vibration transmitted into a rack, shelf, or building structure | Select for the load and mounting conditions; incorrect mounts can increase vibration. |
| Absorptive treatment | Reflections and reverberation in the closet | Does not equal soundproofing; keep vents and cooling paths clear. |
| Barrier or acoustic enclosure | Some airborne sound that can be blocked or redirected | Effect depends on frequency and construction; confirm airflow, fit, load, and electrical compatibility. |
| Rack blanking panels | Unused rack openings that let air bypass equipment | An airflow-management measure, not an acoustic treatment. |
Make one change at a time where practical, then check both the noise and the equipment’s cooling behavior. For site-specific decisions about mount selection, enclosure design, or cooling capacity, use the hardware documentation and a qualified installer when needed.
