How to Reduce Refrigerator Electricity Use Without Compromising Food Safety

The safest way to cut refrigerator electricity use is to run the appliance at the warmest temperature that reliably protects food: keep the refrigerator at or below 40°F (4°C) and the freezer at or below 0°F (-18°C). The U.S. Department of Energy’s Federal Energy Management Program (DOE FEMP) gives a practical operating range of 36–40°F for refrigerators and −5–0°F for freezers. Measure the actual temperature with an appliance thermometer, then reduce avoidable heat and cold-air losses before considering replacement.

Start with the temperatures food safety requires

FoodSafety.gov states: “Your refrigerator should be set at 40°F (4°C) or below and your freezer to 0°F (-18°C) or below.” Those are safety ceilings, not targets to exceed for lower energy use. A refrigerator warmer than 40°F or a freezer warmer than 0°F can put perishable food outside recommended storage conditions.

DOE FEMP recommends 36–40°F for the refrigerator and −5–0°F for the freezer. Colder refrigerator settings use more electricity without providing an additional food-storage benefit once food is safely below 40°F. In practice, select the warmest setting that keeps your measured temperatures within the limits.

Refrigerator 40°F (4°C) or below 36–40°F Use the warmest setting that consistently measures no higher than 40°F.
Freezer 0°F (−18°C) or below −5–0°F Use the warmest setting that consistently measures 0°F or colder.

These ranges come from DOE FEMP guidance for residential refrigerators and DOE FEMP guidance for residential freezers. FoodSafety.gov’s safety instructions are available in “4 Steps to Food Safety.”

Measure the interior temperature instead of trusting the dial

Many household refrigerators do not display the actual temperature inside the food compartment. A control marked “colder” or “warmer” changes the appliance’s operating target, but it does not tell you what food is experiencing at the time you check it.

  1. Put an appliance thermometer in the refrigerator and another in the freezer, following the thermometer and appliance manuals for placement.
  2. Leave the controls at their current settings long enough for the appliance to stabilize after any adjustment.
  3. Read both thermometers. Record the readings and whether the refrigerator is staying at or below 40°F and the freezer at or below 0°F.
  4. If a compartment is colder than necessary, raise its setting gradually and recheck after it stabilizes. If it is above its safety limit, choose a colder setting and investigate airflow, sealing, loading and room conditions.
  5. Continue checking after each change until the appliance reliably meets the limits, rather than judging safety from the control position alone.

Both DOE and FoodSafety.gov recommend an appliance thermometer. A measured temperature also exposes uneven cooling that a dashboard display or dial can hide. Check more than one location if your manual permits it, because a single reading may not reveal a warm pocket caused by blocked airflow.

Adjust settings without crossing the safety line

When the refrigerator is colder than needed

If the thermometer shows a refrigerator consistently below the DOE range, move the refrigerator control slightly warmer. Let the unit stabilize and measure again. Stop increasing the temperature as soon as the compartment remains at or below 40°F. Do not use an unusually warm setting simply because food appears cold; the thermometer reading is the relevant check.

When the freezer is colder than needed

A freezer running below −5°F may be using more energy than necessary. Raise the freezer setting in small steps, allowing stabilization and rechecking each time. Keep the final measured temperature at or below 0°F. If it will not hold 0°F, return to a colder setting and check the door seal, airflow and the owner’s instructions.

When temperatures fluctuate

Recheck after the appliance has reached a stable operating condition. A reading taken immediately after changing a control or opening the door repeatedly does not establish the normal temperature. If readings remain inconsistent, use the troubleshooting checks below before making a larger temperature change.

Prevent cold air from escaping

Test every door gasket

Worn or poorly aligned seals allow conditioned air to leak and make the compressor run more often. DOE describes a simple paper or bill test:

  1. Close the door on a sheet of paper or a bill so part of it remains outside.
  2. Try to pull the paper out.
  3. Repeat at several points around the gasket.

If the paper pulls out easily, the latch may need adjustment or the gasket may need replacement. Confirm the exact model and part before ordering a replacement seal, and follow the appliance manual for installation or adjustment.

Cover food and liquids

Uncovered foods and liquids release moisture into the compartment. DOE notes that the added moisture can make the compressor work harder. Cover containers and wrap stored food with suitable lids or packaging. This is an efficiency measure that also limits drying and odor transfer.

Close the door fully

Check that shelves, drawers and containers are not preventing the gasket from contacting the cabinet. A door that looks closed but is held slightly open by a protruding item can defeat an otherwise good seal.

Keep cold air moving around the load

Do not overpack the refrigerator. FoodSafety.gov explains that cold air needs to circulate to keep food at a safe temperature. A tightly packed compartment can create warm pockets, forcing the appliance to run longer while still cooling unevenly.

  • Leave the air passages and vents identified in the owner’s manual unobstructed.
  • Arrange containers so cold air can move around them instead of filling every gap.
  • After loading groceries, verify the temperature with the appliance thermometer rather than assuming the setting stayed adequate.

Airflow matters for safety as well as electricity use: a refrigerator that runs continuously but has blocked circulation may still have food above 40°F in some areas.

Improve the appliance’s surroundings

Keep it away from heat

Place the refrigerator away from heat sources where the installation allows. Ovens, ranges, direct sunlight and other warm equipment increase the heat the refrigerator must remove. DOE’s Guide to Kitchen Appliances also advises leaving a few inches of clearance behind the appliance so heat can leave the cabinet.

Clean coils only when the manual permits it

Some older models have user-accessible condenser coils. Clean them only as the owner’s manual directs, using the specified access points and method. Do not remove covers or panels on a sealed or inaccessible system just to reach coils; the manual determines whether maintenance is appropriate. A coil-cleaning brush is useful only when the manufacturer identifies the coils as user-accessible.

Defrost manual-defrost models

For a manual-defrost refrigerator or freezer, follow the manufacturer’s defrosting procedure and schedule. DOE warns that excessive frost reduces efficiency. Never chip ice with a sharp tool or improvise a procedure that could damage the liner or refrigeration system; use the manual’s instructions.

Consider an unused second refrigerator

The DOE Energy Saver guide includes unused second units among the energy-saving issues to review. If a basement, garage or spare refrigerator is rarely needed, decide whether it must remain operating. Before switching any appliance off, remove all perishable food and follow the owner’s instructions for shutdown and storage. If the unit is still needed for food, keep it within the same temperature limits and apply the gasket, airflow and placement checks described above. A second appliance can also face a heavier cooling load in a hot garage, so measure its actual temperature rather than assuming the main kitchen setting applies.

Protect food while reducing run time

Energy-saving adjustments do not change the basic handling rules. FoodSafety.gov advises refrigerating perishable food within two hours, or within one hour when the surrounding temperature is above 90°F (32°C). Put food away promptly instead of leaving it on the counter while trying to consolidate a shopping trip.

If the refrigerator cannot maintain 40°F or the freezer cannot maintain 0°F, treat the temperature as a safety problem first. Correct the setting or mechanical issue and use the thermometer to confirm the result. Do not compensate for a warm compartment by trusting a colder-looking dial, and do not pack the compartment so tightly that air cannot circulate.

For additional guidance on keeping food safe while managing storage, see FoodSafety.gov’s “Maintain Food Safety While Cutting Food Waste.”

Use this troubleshooting sequence before buying anything

Work from the simplest, reversible checks to the more expensive decisions:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Verify the measurement. Check the appliance thermometer and allow the compartment to stabilize after any setting change.
  2. Correct the control. If the refrigerator is below the useful range, raise the setting gradually; if either compartment exceeds its safety limit, select a colder setting.
  3. Check the doors. Perform the paper test around each gasket and make sure shelves or packages are not holding a door open.
  4. Restore airflow. Remove obstruction from vents and reduce overpacking.
  5. Check the location. Reduce exposure to nearby heat and confirm the clearance recommended by the manual.
  6. Follow maintenance instructions. Clean accessible coils or defrost a manual-defrost unit only when the owner’s manual calls for it.
  7. Re-measure. Confirm that the refrigerator remains at or below 40°F and the freezer at or below 0°F after the changes.

If the refrigerator is too warm

Start with the thermometer and the control setting, then inspect the gasket and airflow. Overpacking, blocked vents, a door that does not seal and a hot installation location can all increase the cooling load. If the manual’s checks do not restore a safe temperature, arrange qualified service rather than raising the temperature limit or relying on appearance.

If the freezer has heavy frost

Determine whether it is a manual-defrost model. If so, use the prescribed defrost process. If not, consult the manual before removing panels or attempting a repair; frost may indicate a condition that requires service.

If the paper test fails

Check alignment and obstructions first. If the gasket still does not grip the paper, identify the exact replacement part for the model or have the latch and seal serviced.

When replacing the refrigerator is justified

Replacement is a separate decision from adjusting a working appliance. Consider it when the unit’s condition, repair needs, measured operation and household requirements make continued ownership impractical. Do not assume a new appliance will produce a universal payback: electricity savings depend on the model, size, features, room conditions, usage and local electricity tariff.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Compare the information on current labels

For each candidate, compare the EnergyGuide label’s annual electricity-use estimate. The estimate is model-specific and is more useful than a generic claim about how much every new refrigerator saves.

Choose only the capacity you need

Select a size that fits the household’s actual storage needs. A larger cabinet can require more energy even when it carries an efficient rating, while an undersized unit can lead to overpacking and blocked airflow.

Compare configurations

DOE consumer guidance says top-freezer configurations tend to be more efficient than side-by-side models. Treat that as a general tendency, not a guarantee for every model; compare the current labels for the exact refrigerators you are considering.

Account for optional features

Icemakers and through-door water dispensers use more energy than a basic configuration. Decide whether the convenience is worth the additional operating use, and compare otherwise similar models with and without those features.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check qualification and local incentives

Look for current ENERGY STAR qualification and check your electricity provider or local government for available rebates. Programs, eligibility and amounts vary by location and can change, so verify the current terms before treating an incentive as part of the purchase economics. DOE’s Energy Saver guide also recommends comparing appliance labels, size, configuration and features.

A safe, low-energy operating plan

  1. Install appliance thermometers and record the refrigerator and freezer temperatures.
  2. Adjust each control toward the warmest setting that still holds the refrigerator at or below 40°F and the freezer at or below 0°F.
  3. Let the appliance stabilize and verify the readings again.
  4. Test the door gaskets, correct obstructions and cover food and liquids.
  5. Reduce overpacking so cold air can circulate.
  6. Provide the manual-specified clearance, limit nearby heat and perform only approved coil cleaning or defrosting.
  7. Review whether an infrequently used second unit needs to remain on, without leaving perishables in a switched-off appliance.
  8. Continue following the two-hour refrigeration rule, shortened to one hour above 90°F.
  9. Only if these steps fail or the appliance is otherwise due for replacement, compare current EnergyGuide estimates, capacity, configuration, features, ENERGY STAR status and local incentives.

This approach lowers avoidable electricity use without trading away the two measurements that matter most: no warmer than 40°F in the refrigerator and no warmer than 0°F in the freezer.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is 37°F better than 40°F for food safety?

Both are within the recommended refrigerator range. Use the warmest setting that reliably keeps measured food-compartment temperatures at or below 40°F; colder settings generally use more electricity without added food-storage benefit once food is safely below the ceiling.

Can I set the freezer warmer than 0°F to save electricity?

No. FoodSafety.gov sets 0°F as the freezer ceiling, and DOE FEMP gives a −5–0°F operating range. Keep the measured freezer temperature at 0°F or colder.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do I know whether the refrigerator dial is accurate?

You do not know from the dial alone. Place an appliance thermometer in each compartment, allow the appliance to stabilize after adjustments, and use the readings to decide whether a setting is safe.

Does a full refrigerator use less electricity?

Do not pack it tightly. Cold air must circulate, and overpacking can create warm pockets that make the appliance run longer while leaving some food above 40°F. Keep vents and passages clear.

Can I clean the refrigerator coils myself?

Only if the owner’s manual identifies the coils as accessible and gives a cleaning method. Some newer or sealed systems are not intended for user coil cleaning; do not remove panels to reach them.

How often should I defrost a freezer?

For a manual-defrost model, follow the manufacturer’s procedure and schedule. Excessive frost reduces efficiency, but the manual should determine when and how to defrost. Never chip ice with a sharp tool.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Are an icemaker and through-door water dispenser worth the energy?

They are convenience features that use more energy than a basic configuration. Compare otherwise similar models and decide whether the convenience justifies the additional operating use.

Should I replace an old refrigerator to save money?

Not automatically. Replacement economics depend on measured operation, condition, repair needs, size, features, room conditions and your electricity tariff. If replacement is warranted, compare current EnergyGuide annual kWh estimates, ENERGY STAR status, configuration and local incentives.

How quickly must refrigerated food be put away?

FoodSafety.gov advises refrigerating perishable food within two hours, or within one hour when the surrounding temperature is above 90°F (32°C).

The Bottom Line

Measure first, then use the warmest settings that keep the refrigerator at or below 40°F and the freezer at or below 0°F. Seal doors, cover foods, preserve airflow, follow the manual for coils and defrosting, and compare current labels only when replacement is truly needed.
