How to Reduce RAM Usage and Stop Apps Crashing When Memory Is Full

When apps crash because memory is genuinely under pressure, the reliable fix is not to clear random caches or end processes blindly. Measure memory pressure first, identify whether one process is growing, reduce unnecessary background work, and then check storage, drivers, or hardware as appropriate for your device.

High RAM usage by itself is not proof of a problem. Windows, macOS, and Android deliberately use available memory for caches and performance. The useful warning signs are sustained memory pressure, heavy swapping, freezes, repeated crashes, or one app whose usage keeps increasing while you do the same work.

What full memory does to a computer or phone

RAM is the fast working area where the operating system and currently running apps keep active data. When demand exceeds available RAM, the system has to reclaim memory, compress it, or move some data to storage (swap or paging). Storage is far slower than RAM, so the device may feel sluggish before an app actually closes.

Once the system cannot satisfy another allocation, an app can become unresponsive or terminate. A broader operating-system failure can also occur, especially when a driver or faulty memory is involved. Microsoft describes the progression this way: “As memory is depleted over time, Windows slows down and may experience system failures.”

Do not diagnose from a single percentage. macOS may show a high amount of memory in use because it compresses data and fills spare RAM with cached files. Android can have adequate RAM but still fail when internal storage is nearly full. Look for the combination of pressure, swapping, freezes, and repeatable growth in one process.

Measure the pressure before changing anything

Record a baseline

Note what you were doing when the crash occurred, which apps were open, and whether the slowdown appeared immediately or after hours. Then observe the system while reproducing the workload. A process that is large but stable may be normal; a process that grows continuously during an otherwise steady task is more suspicious.

  • Check the platform’s memory-pressure or swap indicator, not just the total percentage.
  • Sort processes by memory and identify the largest users.
  • Watch whether one process keeps increasing after you close unrelated apps.
  • Record free storage as well as RAM, particularly on Android.

Use the right monitor

Platform Primary evidence What to watch
Windows Task Manager and Resource Monitor Memory by process, startup load, and growth over time
macOS Activity Monitor > Memory Memory Pressure, Swap Used, Compressed, and large processes
Android Settings > Storage, app behavior, and safe mode Free storage, crashing app, updates, and downloaded-app involvement

Windows: reduce usage and isolate the failing process

1. Find the largest users in Task Manager

  1. Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager. If the compact view appears, select More details.
  2. On the Processes tab, select the Memory column to sort descending.
  3. Record the top processes and their memory values while the problem is visible. Repeat the check after several minutes of the same workload.
  4. Open Performance > Memory for total usage, available memory, and committed memory. Use Resource Monitor from the Performance page or Windows search when you need a more detailed process view.

End a process only when you know what it is and can safely close it. System components, security software, drivers, and unsaved work can be damaged or interrupted by an indiscriminate end task. If one ordinary app dominates and continues growing, leave a record of its name and version for the update or reinstall step.

2. Reduce startup and background demand

  1. In Task Manager, open Startup apps.
  2. Sort by Startup impact and disable nonessential launchers, updaters, and helpers that you do not need immediately after sign-in.
  3. Alternatively, open Settings > Apps > Startup and switch off applications that do not need to run in the background.
  4. Restart Windows and test the same workload again.

Disabling startup is reversible. Do not disable a security tool, hardware utility required for input or networking, or a business application without checking what it controls. The aim is to remove unnecessary concurrent work, not to make Windows services disappear.

3. Update before assuming a leak

Install available Windows updates, device drivers, and updates for the app that crashes. A memory defect may already be fixed in a newer release, and a driver can consume kernel memory even when the visible app looks normal. Restart after updates so old processes and allocations are removed, then repeat the baseline test.

4. Investigate continuous growth as a possible leak

A memory leak occurs when a process keeps reserving memory but fails to release it after the work is finished. The clearest pattern is a steadily rising private or committed size during a repeatable task, followed by slowdowns or a crash. Microsoft recommends using Performance Monitor to investigate this kind of behavior.

  1. Open Windows search and launch Performance Monitor.
  2. Add process memory counters for the suspected application, such as its private bytes or working set.
  3. Record the values while repeating the same operation. A rising line that does not fall when the operation ends supports the leak hypothesis.
  4. Update, reinstall, or replace the app and send the measurements to its developer or support team.

Do not “fix” a leak by repeatedly ending unrelated processes. That only postpones the allocation failure and can discard work.

5. Treat stop codes as a separate escalation

If Windows displays MEMORY_MANAGEMENT or PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA, follow Microsoft’s stop-code troubleshooting and memory-diagnostic guidance rather than repeatedly clearing caches. Check recently changed drivers, run the available Windows memory diagnostics, preserve crash information when possible, and consider hardware service if failures continue. These stop codes can involve defective RAM, a driver, or corrupted system components; a single app’s high usage is not the only explanation.

macOS: use Memory Pressure, not the percentage alone

1. Read the Activity Monitor Memory pane

  1. Open Applications > Utilities > Activity Monitor.
  2. Select the Memory tab and sort by the memory column to identify large processes.
  3. Inspect the Memory Pressure graph, Swap Used, Compressed, and cached-memory figures while the problem occurs.

Apple explains that memory pressure reflects several factors, including free memory, swap rate, wired memory, and cached files. Green pressure generally means memory is being handled efficiently; yellow indicates increasing demand; red indicates that the Mac needs more RAM. Apple’s Activity Monitor guide describes the graph as a way to see whether the computer is using memory efficiently.

2. Quit safely

Close an unneeded app through its normal Quit command first. If a particular process is unresponsive, select it in Activity Monitor and choose the stop button, then Force Quit only when necessary. Force quitting can lose unsaved files and may affect other apps that depend on that process, so it is a recovery action rather than routine memory management.

3. Reduce recurring background load

Remove applications you no longer use, reduce the number of browser tabs and extensions involved in the workload, and install macOS and app updates. Restart after making changes and test the same activity. If pressure turns red during ordinary work even after unnecessary processes are closed, software cleanup alone may not be enough.

4. Check whether the Mac can be upgraded

Choose Apple menu > System Information and inspect the memory section for upgrade information. Some Mac models have soldered memory and cannot be expanded; others accept a specific module type. If the model is upgradeable and pressure remains high, verify the exact supported capacity and installation procedure before buying anything.

Android: separate RAM pressure from nearly full storage

1. Check storage first

Android distinguishes storage, where photos, downloads, apps, and their data are kept, from memory (RAM), where Android and running apps execute. Google warns that a phone can start having issues when less than 10% of storage is free. This is an operational threshold, not a claim that every phone will fail at exactly the same percentage.

  1. Open Settings > Storage (the label can vary by manufacturer).
  2. Review the categories using the most space, especially videos, downloads, offline media, and large apps.
  3. Move or back up media, remove downloads, and uninstall apps you no longer use.
  4. Recheck free space before judging whether the crashing app is a RAM problem.

2. Update and test the affected app

  1. Install available Android system updates and update the crashing app from its app store.
  2. If the app is frozen, open Settings > Apps > the app’s name and choose Force stop. Use this only for an unresponsive app.
  3. Reopen it and reproduce the task. If it still crashes, restart the phone and test again.

Android manages background RAM automatically. Regularly swiping every app away is not a durable fix and can make frequently used apps reload more often. Focus on an app that repeatedly crashes, a phone that is low on storage, or a downloaded app that changes behavior in safe mode.

3. Clear cache before clearing storage

From the affected app’s information screen, open Storage and choose Clear cache when available. Cached files can be rebuilt and clearing them is comparatively low risk. Clear storage (sometimes called clear data) is different: Google warns that it permanently deletes that app’s stored data, settings, accounts, or offline content. Back up anything important and use it only when you accept that reset.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Use safe mode to test downloaded apps

Start the phone in its manufacturer’s safe mode, which temporarily disables downloaded apps. If crashes stop there, remove recently installed or recently updated apps one at a time and retest in normal mode. If the problem continues in safe mode, a downloaded app is less likely to be responsible; continue with system updates, storage checks, and manufacturer support.

Choose the intervention that matches the evidence

Observed pattern Most likely direction First action Risk or limitation
One app dominates and keeps growing Possible memory leak or corrupted installation Update, reinstall, or replace that app; measure growth again Reinstalling may remove local settings or data, so back up first
Many apps compete, but pressure falls after background work is closed Excess startup or background demand Disable nonessential startup items and remove unused apps Disabling a required helper can affect hardware, security, or syncing
Android has very little free storage Storage pressure rather than a pure RAM shortage Keep more than 10% free by removing or moving media and clearing safe caches Clearing app storage permanently deletes that app’s data
Windows shows memory-related stop codes Driver, system, or hardware fault Run memory diagnostics, check drivers, preserve crash data, and escalate if needed Ending apps or clearing caches does not repair defective RAM
Pressure stays high during normal work and the device is upgradeable Workload exceeds installed capacity Compare a compatible RAM upgrade after checking the model’s limits Compatibility and installation requirements determine whether the upgrade is possible

When adding RAM is the durable fix

Consider a hardware upgrade only after measuring normal workloads and reducing avoidable background demand. A larger module will not repair a leaking app, a bad driver, or an almost-full Android storage volume, but it can provide useful headroom when your regular applications legitimately need more memory.

Verify compatibility before purchase

  • Identify the exact computer model, not just the product family.
  • Check whether memory is user-upgradeable and how many slots are available.
  • Match the memory generation, such as DDR4 or DDR5, and the physical form factor, such as DIMM for many desktops or SO-DIMM for many laptops.
  • Confirm the maximum supported capacity, speed rules, and whether existing modules must be replaced as a matched set.
  • Read the manufacturer’s installation instructions and back up important data before opening the device.

Apple documents upgradeability through System Information, while Windows computer manufacturers publish model-specific limits. Do not insert a module based only on a similar-looking specification: the wrong generation or form factor will not be compatible.

Prevent memory-related crashes

  • Keep Windows, macOS, Android, drivers, and frequently used apps current.
  • Review startup and background apps after installing major software.
  • Leave meaningful free storage, especially on Android; use the 10% guidance as a warning point rather than waiting for storage to reach zero.
  • Restart after updates, after removing a leaking app, and when a process has accumulated memory over a long session.
  • Save work before force quitting, clearing app storage, uninstalling software, or changing hardware.
  • When reporting a bug, include the app version, operating-system version, reproduction steps, memory readings, and whether the issue disappears in safe mode.

A practical recovery sequence

  1. Reproduce the crash once while observing the platform’s memory or storage indicators.
  2. Identify whether one process grows, many background apps compete, Android storage is below the 10% warning point, or Windows shows a stop code.
  3. Close unneeded work normally and save open files.
  4. Disable nonessential startup items or remove unused apps, then update the operating system, drivers, and affected app.
  5. Restart and repeat the same workload to see whether the pressure pattern changed.
  6. If one process still grows, treat it as a possible leak and reinstall, replace, or report that app.
  7. If pressure remains high during normal work, verify upgradeability and compatible RAM specifications.
  8. If crashes include Windows memory stop codes or persist in Android safe mode, move to diagnostics or professional hardware support instead of repeatedly clearing caches.
