If an OLED phone hurts your eyes at low brightness, first test whether discomfort tracks a narrow brightness range. Enable the phone’s DC-dimming, anti-flicker or low-brightness flicker-reduction control if it has one; otherwise keep brightness above the uncomfortable range and reduce glare, nearby lighting and text strain. Reading and night modes may feel easier but do not demonstrate that PWM has stopped. If symptoms continue, compare independently measured low-flicker OLED, LCD or E Ink hardware and seek medical advice for persistent pain, visual changes or neurologic symptoms.
Why OLED flicker is often worse at low brightness
Many OLED phones regulate light by rapidly switching pixels on and off. This is pulse-width modulation (PWM): the display controls average brightness by changing the proportion of each cycle in which the pixels emit light. At high brightness, a phone may use a more DC-like method, reducing or eliminating the large swings in light output. Near the bottom of the slider, it may switch to PWM so the pixels can produce a very dim average output without losing control of color or voltage.

That change explains why a screen can feel comfortable at 60 percent and uncomfortable at 10 percent. The slider percentage is not a universal threshold. Each model’s driver, firmware and panel can change the point at which the modulation method changes. Xiaomi describes this trade-off directly: PWM can introduce flicker that causes visual discomfort or eye fatigue. A different phone can behave differently even when it uses the same OLED marketing terminology.

Flicker is not determined by refresh rate alone. A 120 Hz display can still use a separate, much faster brightness-modulation waveform. The U.S. Department of Energy identifies the driver, electrical loading, dimming level and waveform as factors that determine flicker. In practice, you need measurements across brightness levels rather than a single “high refresh rate” or “flicker-free” claim.

Check whether PWM is actually your trigger
Symptoms can come from several sources at once. Ordinary digital eye strain is affected by glare, contrast, viewing distance, small text, dry eyes and lighting around the screen. PWM may be one contributor rather than the only cause. A controlled test helps you avoid buying a new phone for the wrong problem.
- Use a neutral screen. Open a plain document, settings page or other mostly white or gray screen. Avoid a video with rapidly changing scenes.
- Hold distance and posture steady. Keep the phone at your usual reading distance and use it for several minutes at a time.
- Move manual brightness slowly. Start at a comfortable level, then move downward in small steps and back upward. Note the range where discomfort, visual fatigue or a sense of flicker appears.
- Repeat in different lighting. Test with a normally lit room and with less glare on the glass. If symptoms change substantially when reflections or nearby lamps change, lighting is part of the problem.
- Compare a different display. A laptop, tablet or another phone can provide a useful comparison, but do not assume its panel is PWM-free without a measurement.
Do not stare at a phone camera preview and treat rolling bands as a medical test. Camera exposure, scanout and automatic processing can exaggerate or hide modulation. A slow-motion video can suggest that a waveform exists, but it cannot establish how deep the modulation is or whether it is visible to your eyes.
Use the phone’s built-in controls first
Find DC dimming or an anti-flicker option
Open Settings and search for terms such as DC dimming, anti-flicker, flicker prevention, low-brightness flicker reduction or flicker-free. Depending on the manufacturer, the switch may be under Display, Brightness, Eye comfort or More display settings. Some phones expose the option only after an advanced or developer setting is enabled; others remove it in a later software version.
Enable the control, then repeat the deliberate brightness test. A DC-like mode may reduce modulation depth, but it can also alter color accuracy, near-black detail, grain or uniformity. Manufacturers sometimes warn that low-light image quality changes when the mode is active. Judge the setting with the content you actually read: text on a light background, dark mode, photos and video can reveal different trade-offs.

Use the manufacturer’s reading or eye-comfort mode correctly
Reading mode generally changes color temperature, saturation or contrast. Xiaomi’s guidance for the POCO X6, for example, describes Reading mode as a way to adjust color temperature for comfort. Such a mode can reduce the harsh appearance of a cool white screen, but it does not prove that the OLED’s brightness waveform has stopped. Treat it as a comfort adjustment, not a PWM solution.
Test automatic brightness separately
Automatic brightness can move the panel through an uncomfortable range as room lighting changes. Temporarily switch to manual brightness while testing. Once you identify a comfortable floor, re-enable automatic brightness only if the phone lets you set a minimum or if its adjustments stay above that range. A fixed, slightly higher brightness with reduced reflections can be easier than a low automatic setting that repeatedly crosses your trigger.
Set a brightness and lighting combination that your eyes tolerate
If discomfort appears only near the bottom of the slider, keep the display above that band. You do not need to make the screen blindingly bright: add light to the room, turn the phone away from direct reflections and use a matte case or screen surface only if it does not reduce text clarity. The American Academy of Ophthalmology recommends adjusting screen brightness and contrast and dimming lighting near the screen to reduce digital eye strain.
- Match screen and room brightness. A very bright phone in a dark room creates glare and pupil changes; a very dim phone in a bright room encourages squinting.
- Reduce reflections. Change the phone angle, move a lamp or clean the glass before lowering brightness into an uncomfortable PWM range.
- Increase text size. Larger type lets you keep a comfortable brightness and viewing distance instead of leaning toward the screen.
- Increase viewing distance. Use the largest distance at which text remains easy to read. This reduces focusing effort without requiring a special filter.
- Take regular distance breaks. Look away periodically and blink fully; dry eyes can amplify sensations that are mistakenly attributed only to flicker.
- Adjust contrast thoughtfully. Extremely low contrast makes you strain, while excessive contrast and glare can feel harsh. Use the combination that lets you read without squinting.
Why blue-light filters and overlays are not PWM fixes
Night mode, warm color temperature and blue-light filters change the spectrum or color balance. A physical overlay or software dimmer may reduce the apparent brightness, but neither establishes that the underlying OLED switching has stopped. In some cases, a software dimmer lowers the rendered image while the panel continues using the same PWM at its hardware brightness level.

The American Academy of Ophthalmology states that blue light from computers does not cause eye disease. That does not mean a warmer screen is useless: many people find a less-blue image more comfortable at night, and lower glare can reduce ordinary strain. Keep the distinction clear: spectral comfort and PWM reduction are different interventions. If a filter helps, continue using it, but do not use that improvement as proof that flicker is gone.
Understand the trade-offs of DC-like dimming
“DC dimming” is often used as shorthand for reducing current or voltage rather than deeply pulsing the pixels. The implementation can be hybrid: one method at high brightness and high-frequency PWM at low brightness. Some phones blend the methods, change the PWM frequency when the option is enabled or apply the setting only in certain refresh-rate modes.
Possible benefits include less pronounced modulation and better comfort in the range where you were symptomatic. Possible costs include:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- color shifts, especially in very dark tones;
- more visible grain or unevenness at low brightness;
- crushed black detail or altered gamma;
- different behavior when the refresh rate changes;
- higher minimum brightness than you want in a dark room; and
- the setting being disabled after an operating-system update or when a particular display mode is selected.
After enabling the option, check it at several brightness levels and with both light and dark themes. If a manufacturer’s warning says image quality may change, consider that an expected trade-off rather than a defect. Keep the mode only if the comfort gain outweighs the visual change for your use.

When changing hardware makes more sense
If no setting produces a tolerable result, a different display may be more defensible than an accessory marketed as “anti-flicker.” Look for independent measurements that show modulation depth and frequency at multiple brightness levels. Useful evidence describes the measurement method, test equipment, refresh-rate mode and brightness points; a single marketing label is not enough.
| Display choice | What to check | Potential advantage | Trade-offs and cautions |
|---|---|---|---|
| OLED with measured low modulation | Modulation depth and frequency across the brightness range; whether a DC-like mode is available | Retains OLED contrast and thin design while reducing the waveform that bothers you | Results can change with firmware, refresh rate and display mode; low-light grain or color changes may remain |
| OLED with very high PWM frequency | Frequency at low, medium and high brightness, not only the headline specification | Some users tolerate faster modulation better | Frequency alone does not describe modulation depth or individual sensitivity |
| LCD | Whether its backlight uses PWM, and at which brightness levels | Many LCDs use constant-current or otherwise less pronounced modulation | “LCD” is not a guarantee; contrast, black levels, thickness and viewing angles may differ |
| E Ink | Front-light behavior, refresh flashes and lighting conditions | Reflective viewing can avoid the continuously emitting OLED experience | Slower refresh, limited color or video capability, and front-light flicker on some models |
Also compare ambient-light performance. A display that is comfortable indoors may force an uncomfortable brightness outdoors, while a highly reflective panel may make you lower brightness in a dark room. Check the return policy before committing, because sensitivity is personal and specifications rarely predict every user’s experience.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to compare phones without being misled by specifications
Use a checklist rather than one number:
- Modulation depth: How large are the light-output swings? A lower depth generally means a smaller change between the bright and dim portions of each cycle.
- Frequency at each brightness: Is the frequency stable, does it change near the bottom of the slider, and does it change with refresh rate?
- Operating modes: Can DC-like dimming be enabled, and does it work in the refresh-rate and color mode you plan to use?
- Image trade-offs: Does the low-flicker mode introduce tint, grain, black crush or a higher minimum brightness?
- Measurement method: Was the result captured with a suitable photodetector or calibrated instrument, or is it only a camera recording?
- Software stability: Is the control present in the current software version, and can an update change its behavior?
- Return window: Can you test the phone at the brightness levels and room lighting that normally cause symptoms?
Compare measurements made under similar conditions. A result taken at 100 percent brightness cannot establish what happens at 5 percent. Likewise, a measurement in one refresh-rate mode does not describe every mode the phone supports.

Troubleshoot common situations
“It hurts only below about 20 percent.”
Keep brightness above the identified range, increase nearby room light and reduce reflections. Then test the phone’s anti-flicker or DC-like mode. Do not assume that another phone’s 20 percent point will match yours; slider percentages are implementation-specific.
Best Value
“Reading mode helps, but I still feel strain.”
Keep the warmer color setting if it improves comfort, then test brightness and glare independently. Reading mode may be addressing spectral harshness or contrast while PWM remains unchanged.
“The camera shows bands, so the phone must be unsafe.”
Bands show that the camera and display interacted during exposure; they do not quantify your exposure or prove a health effect. Use the recording only as a prompt to seek proper measurements and pay attention to your symptoms.
“DC dimming looks grainy or colors are wrong.”
That can be a normal trade-off of the implementation. Compare the mode at several brightness levels, check whether a different refresh rate changes the result and decide whether the comfort benefit justifies the image change. If not, disable it and use a higher brightness with better room lighting.
“The phone was comfortable until an update.”
Recheck display, eye-comfort and refresh-rate settings after the update. Firmware can change the crossover between dimming methods or reset an advanced control. If the option disappeared, record the software version when contacting the manufacturer.
When to stop experimenting and seek medical advice
Visual discomfort deserves attention even when a display setting appears to be the trigger. Google’s Pixel safety guidance warns that a small percentage of users may experience headaches, seizures, blackouts, eye strain, fatigue or dry eyes triggered by visual stimuli or electronic displays. Stop using the triggering display and seek prompt clinical advice for persistent pain, new visual changes, migraine-like symptoms, blackouts, seizures or other neurologic symptoms. A clinician can also assess dry eye, refractive error, migraine and other causes that display settings cannot correct.
Do not drive or perform hazardous work while experiencing visual disturbances. If symptoms are severe or sudden, use appropriate urgent medical services rather than continuing brightness tests.
Quick Recap
A practical decision path
- Identify the range. Test a neutral screen while moving brightness slowly and note the uncomfortable band.
- Enable the relevant control. Try DC dimming, anti-flicker or low-brightness flicker reduction, then check text, photos and dark scenes for quality changes.
- Fix the environment. Match screen and room brightness, remove reflections, enlarge text and increase viewing distance.
- Add comfort modes only as needed. Use reading or night mode for color comfort, remembering that it does not verify PWM reduction.
- Verify after changes. Re-test each refresh-rate and display mode you actually use, especially after software updates.
- Choose hardware if necessary. Favor independently measured low-modulation OLED, a measured LCD or an E Ink device whose front light suits your use, and buy with a return option.
- Prioritize health. Stop testing and obtain medical assessment when symptoms are significant, persistent or neurologic.
