The most reliable way to protect a portfolio from a technology selloff is not to guess the bottom or sell every technology holding. Set a target mix of stocks, bonds and cash; measure your total technology exposure across individual shares, funds, employer equity and options; diversify into assets driven by different risks; and rebalance using a written rule. This can reduce concentration risk, but it cannot prevent losses in a broad market decline.
Your appropriate allocation depends on when you need the money, how much loss you can financially absorb and how much volatility you can tolerate. There is no universal “safe” percentage for technology stocks or guaranteed hedge ratio.

Why a technology drop can hurt more than one holding
Technology companies appear in direct shareholdings, sector funds and many broad, capitalization-weighted index funds. A portfolio can therefore look diversified by account or fund count while still depending heavily on the same large companies. Employer stock, stock options and concentrated positions in a taxable account can increase that exposure further.

When a few large technology companies represent a large share of several investments, a decline in that group can affect the whole portfolio at once. The first task is therefore measurement, not trading. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission describes diversification as spreading money among different investments to reduce risk. It also notes that stocks have historically offered the greatest risk and return potential, bonds have generally been less volatile with more modest returns, and cash equivalents have usually had the lowest risk and return.

Concentration can hide in “diversified” funds
Broad funds are not automatically balanced funds. A market-capitalization-weighted benchmark gives larger companies larger weights, so a broad equity fund can become technology-heavy when that sector and its largest companies dominate the market. Inspect the fund’s current sector breakdown and top holdings rather than relying on its label.
Count exposure through every account
Make one inventory covering retirement accounts, taxable accounts, savings plans, employer programs and derivatives. Include direct shares, sector funds, broad index funds, options and restricted or vested employer equity. For each holding, record its market value, sector allocation, largest underlying positions, country exposure and whether selling would create a tax bill or trading restriction.
A practical exposure worksheet
- List each security and its current value.
- For every fund, obtain the latest holdings and sector allocation from the issuer.
- Estimate indirect technology exposure by multiplying the fund value by its technology weight.
- Add direct technology shares and the technology portion of employer equity.
- Flag positions that overlap in the same companies, even when they sit in different funds.
- Calculate technology exposure as a percentage of the entire portfolio and separately as a percentage of equities.
This calculation will not be exact when holdings change daily, but it reveals whether several products are making the same bet. Schwab’s guidance recommends checking concentration by sector, company, company size and country, not just by account or fund name.

Choose an allocation before the selloff
Asset allocation is the decision about how much of the portfolio belongs in stocks, bonds and cash. Set it before prices are moving rapidly. The allocation should reflect three related but different questions:
- Time horizon: When will you need to spend the money? A goal due soon has less time to recover from a drawdown than a retirement goal decades away.
- Risk tolerance: How much price volatility can you endure without abandoning the plan?
- Risk capacity: How much loss can your income, emergency savings and other resources absorb without jeopardizing the goal?
An investor with a long horizon and stable income may be able to hold more equities than someone approaching a tuition payment, home purchase or retirement withdrawal. Schwab warned on November 15, 2024, that an unattended portfolio can become more aggressive as rising stocks increase its equity weight. The remedy is an allocation matched to the investor’s horizon and risk tolerance, reviewed before a crisis.

What each major asset class contributes
| Asset class | Primary role | Risks to understand | Useful for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stocks | Long-term growth and participation in business profits | Large price declines, company risk, sector concentration and country risk | Goals with enough time to withstand market losses |
| High-quality bonds | Income and a potentially steadier counterweight to equities | Interest-rate risk, duration risk, credit risk and market-price changes | Reducing equity volatility and funding medium-term needs |
| Cash and cash equivalents | Liquidity and capital stability for near-term spending | Inflation and reinvestment risk; lower long-term return potential | Emergency reserves and withdrawals due soon |
These roles are tendencies, not guarantees. Bonds can lose value, and stock and bond prices can sometimes fall together. Vanguard has described bonds as a historical stabilizer because fixed income usually has less volatility risk than equities, while also noting that recent periods have challenged the traditional stock-and-bond relationship.
Do not copy a percentage from someone else
A fixed technology percentage cannot be declared safe for every investor. The right decision depends on the rest of the portfolio, the goal date, taxes, income stability and the investor’s ability to keep investing during a downturn. Use a target range that you can follow in a severe decline rather than an allocation that looks comfortable only when markets are rising.
Diversify across genuinely different risk drivers
Reducing technology concentration does not mean replacing one concentrated bet with another. A portfolio can remain vulnerable if it simply swaps one group of fast-growing companies for a different narrow theme. Diversification works best when holdings respond differently to economic growth, interest rates, inflation, credit conditions, currencies and company-specific events.
| Diversification dimension | What to check | Why it matters during a technology decline |
|---|---|---|
| Sector | Exposure to health care, consumer staples, utilities, industrials, energy, financials and other non-technology areas | Different industries earn revenue under different economic conditions |
| Company size | Large-, mid- and small-company exposure | Smaller companies can have different valuations, financing needs and business cycles |
| Geography | Domestic and international equities, with attention to country weights | Spreads dependence on one economy, currency and regulatory system |
| Asset class | Stocks, high-quality bonds and cash | Combines assets with different volatility and liquidity characteristics |
| Issuer and security | Top holdings, employer stock and individual-company positions | Limits the damage from one company or a small group of companies |
Use new money to reduce concentration first
If you are adding money regularly, direct new contributions toward underrepresented sectors, geographies or high-quality fixed income. This can lower the relative weight of technology holdings without immediately selling appreciated positions. It also avoids creating a tax bill solely to restore balance.
International exposure is not a complete solution by itself
International equities can reduce dependence on one country and currency, but they remain stocks and can decline during a global risk-off period. Check the fund’s country and sector weights; an international fund can still have meaningful technology exposure. Geographic diversification should complement, not replace, asset-class diversification.

Use defensive fixed income with a clear understanding of the risks
U.S. Treasury securities are generally considered high-quality fixed-income investments because they are backed by the U.S. government. Investment-grade corporate bonds can add income and issuer diversification, but they carry credit risk that Treasuries do not. The defensive allocation should be selected for the job it must perform, not simply for its yield.

A bond fund owns securities whose market prices change. When interest rates rise, bonds with longer durations generally experience larger price declines than shorter-duration bonds. Credit spreads can widen when investors become concerned about economic conditions, reducing the value of corporate and lower-quality bonds. A fund’s share price can fall even when the underlying issuers continue to make scheduled payments.
Treasury backing applies to the underlying Treasury securities, not a guarantee that a bond fund’s share price will remain constant. Read the fund’s duration, credit-quality breakdown, maturity profile, fees and distribution policy before treating it as a stabilizer.
Match the defensive holding to the spending date
- Money needed soon: Keep an appropriate cash or cash-equivalent reserve so a market decline does not force a stock sale for an imminent bill.
- Intermediate needs: Consider high-quality bonds whose duration and maturity risk fit the time until the money is required.
- Long-term growth: Retain enough diversified equity exposure to avoid sacrificing the growth needed for a distant goal.
Schwab Asset Management’s analysis using data through September 30, 2024, compared hypothetical allocations over a 10-year period and found that adding fixed income reduced volatility and the dispersion of returns in those comparisons. The analysis also emphasized that fixed-income exchange-traded funds are not risk-free.
Implement the plan in five steps
1. Build a complete holdings map
Download current statements and list every position in one spreadsheet. Record value, account type, cost basis, unrealized gain or loss, sector, country, company size, fund expense ratio, bond duration and credit quality where applicable. Mark employer stock, options and any holding subject to a trading window.

2. Calculate direct and indirect technology exposure
For each fund, use its published sector weights and top holdings. Add direct shares and the technology component of employer equity. Compare the result with the total portfolio and with the equity portion alone. Review the calculation periodically because fund weights and market values change.
3. Set target ranges for stocks, bonds and cash
Write down the target allocation, acceptable ranges, the purpose of each sleeve and the circumstances that would trigger a review. Include the goal date, expected withdrawals, emergency reserve and the maximum loss that would cause you to change behavior. This written plan turns a market headline into a pre-agreed process.
4. Reduce overlap before selling taxable positions
Redirect contributions, dividends and scheduled purchases toward underrepresented assets. When selling is necessary, compare the tax cost, transaction costs, holding period and account location. A tax-deferred account may offer more flexibility than a taxable account, while employer plans can impose restrictions. Do not let a desire for perfect diversification create an avoidable tax bill without considering the benefit.
5. Rebalance on a calendar or threshold
Choose a review schedule, a drift threshold or both. Vanguard illustrates a 70% stock and 30% bond portfolio that is rebalanced when the mix moves 5 percentage points or more from the target. The purpose is to restore the chosen risk level, not to predict whether markets will rise or fall next.

| Comparison | Questions to ask |

| Fees and taxes | What is the expense ratio, trading cost, bid-ask spread or tax consequence of changing the position? |
| Liquidity | Can you access the money when a withdrawal is due without selling a volatile asset? |
| Rebalancing fit | Will the holding make it easier to maintain your written target ranges? |
A broad exchange-traded fund can diversify efficiently, but inspect its benchmark and holdings. Capitalization weighting can leave a supposedly broad fund with a large technology allocation.
Taxes, employer stock and behavior can dominate the outcome
Plan for the tax cost of concentration
Selling appreciated technology shares in a taxable account may create a capital-gains tax liability. Before trading, identify the cost basis, holding period, applicable tax rate, loss-harvesting opportunities and whether the position has special restrictions. In some cases, directing new money elsewhere can lower concentration gradually; in others, the risk of remaining concentrated may justify a planned sale. A qualified tax professional can help evaluate the trade-off.
Treat employer equity as both an investment and an income risk
Employer stock links your portfolio to the same company that provides your wages or benefits. If the company struggles, employment income and investment value can be affected together. Include vested shares, unvested awards and options in the concentration review, and check plan rules before making a transaction.

Rapid declines can trigger an urge to sell everything. A written allocation, automatic contributions and a preselected rebalancing rule reduce the number of decisions made under stress. Rebalancing may require selling what has risen and buying what has fallen; it is a risk-control process, not a forecast. If a planned allocation would be impossible to hold through a severe decline, it is probably too aggressive for your circumstances.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
- Counting funds instead of exposures: Map the underlying holdings and sector weights.
- Assuming “broad market” means technology-neutral: Check the benchmark’s current concentration.
- Moving everything to cash after a drop: Separate money needed soon from long-term capital and follow the written allocation.
- Using long-duration or low-quality bonds as a substitute for cash: Match duration and credit risk to the spending date.
- Ignoring taxes and transaction costs: Compare the benefit of reducing concentration with the cost of selling.
- Rebalancing without a rule: Select a calendar interval or drift threshold in advance.
- Chasing a new narrow theme: Test whether the replacement has a genuinely different economic risk.
- Assuming diversification eliminates losses: It reduces concentration risk but cannot guarantee a profit or prevent a declining portfolio.
A simple decision framework during a technology selloff
- Check the cause and your plan, not the headline: Confirm whether your target allocation has actually drifted and whether the goal date or cash needs have changed.
- Measure before trading: Update direct, indirect and employer-related technology exposure.
- Protect near-term spending: Keep the required cash reserve and avoid funding imminent withdrawals by selling a depressed asset.
- Use contributions and dividends first: Direct new money to underrepresented assets when that is sufficient to correct the drift.
- Rebalance only to the written ranges: Apply the same threshold or schedule you selected in advance.
- Document taxes and costs: Record the reason, account, cost basis and expected tax effect of each transaction.
- Review after life changes: Revisit the plan when income, liabilities, dependents, health, retirement date or spending needs materially change.
When individualized advice is worthwhile
Consider professional help when a single company or employer represents a large share of your wealth, when options or restricted stock are involved, when selling would create a substantial taxable gain, or when withdrawals are close. An adviser or tax professional can model account location, tax consequences and cash-flow needs. The professional should explain the assumptions, fees, conflicts and rebalancing method rather than promise protection from market losses.
Diversification and asset allocation cannot ensure a profit or prevent losses. They are tools for controlling how much one sector, company, country or asset class can determine the result. The practical objective is a portfolio whose risk matches the goal and that you can continue to hold when technology stocks fall.
