How to Reduce PC Upgrade Costs When RAM and SSD Prices Rise

Do not automatically buy more RAM or a larger SSD. First identify the component limiting your computer, then buy the smallest compatible upgrade that removes that limit. In many systems, 16GB or 32GB of RAM is enough, and an external SSD can postpone an internal-drive replacement when the problem is storage space rather than boot-drive health.

That discipline matters because memory costs are unusually uncertain. Gartner estimates that combined DRAM and SSD prices could be 130% higher by the end of 2026 than in 2025, a change it models would raise PC prices by 17%. AI-infrastructure demand is diverting production capacity, and meaningful relief was not expected before 2027 in PCWorld’s September 30, 2026 report. The sections below show how to diagnose your need, stage purchases, compare compatibility and warranties, and decide whether a refurbished PC is better value.

Why RAM and SSD upgrades are getting more expensive

Two related markets are being squeezed at the same time. DRAM is the memory used by system RAM, while NAND flash is the storage technology inside SSDs. AI-factory construction consumes large quantities of both, reducing the capacity available for ordinary Windows PCs and other consumer devices.

Gartner’s 2026 estimate is a modeled market outlook, not a guaranteed shop price: combined DRAM and SSD prices may surge 130% by the end of 2026 compared with 2025 levels, with a modeled 17% increase in PC prices. Gartner also said, in a February 26, 2026 press release, "In addition, rising AI PC prices will delay the projected 50% market penetration of AI PCs until 2028."

Ireland’s Office of Government Procurement says AI-factory demand is diverting DRAM and SSD capacity from Windows PCs and that the disruption may last up to two years. PCWorld reported on September 30, 2026 that memory prices were still rising and that meaningful relief was not expected before 2027. These statements describe market direction, not a promise that every module or drive will rise by the same percentage. Country, capacity, generation, retailer and promotions still determine the price you see.

Audit the bottleneck before spending anything

A short measurement session can prevent an unnecessary RAM purchase. Record what happens during the task that feels slow: launching applications, opening a large project, loading a game, exporting video or copying files. Check memory pressure, storage space and health, application load behavior, and CPU and GPU utilization together. PCWorld’s upgrade guidance notes that a GPU, SSD or cooling change can produce a larger improvement than RAM for some workloads.

Windows memory check

  1. Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager.
  2. Select Performance, then Memory. Note total installed memory, speed, slots used and the percentage in use while your normal applications are open.
  3. Open the Processes tab and sort by Memory. Close an unneeded application and repeat the task. If usage remains close to the installed limit and the system moves data to disk, more RAM may help.
  4. For a longer observation, open Task Manager’s Performance view during several sessions rather than judging from an idle desktop.

High memory use by itself is not proof that an upgrade is needed. Modern operating systems use spare RAM for caching. The stronger signal is repeated slowdowns accompanied by sustained memory pressure, application reloads or paging while the workload is active.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

macOS and Linux checks

On macOS, open Activity Monitor and inspect the Memory Pressure graph while reproducing the slowdown. On Linux, tools such as free -h show memory and swap use; observe them while the actual workload runs. Menu names differ by distribution and macOS release, but the principle is the same: measure pressure under load rather than relying on the amount of free memory shown at idle.

Storage-capacity and health check

  1. In Windows, open Settings > System > Storage and record free space on the boot drive. Review the categories consuming space before buying capacity.
  2. Use the drive maker’s diagnostic software or the operating system’s available health information to check for warnings, rising error counts or a failing-drive alert. A nearly full but healthy drive is a capacity problem; a drive reporting errors is a replacement and backup priority.
  3. On macOS, use Disk Utility to inspect the device and run First Aid where appropriate. On Linux, lsblk identifies devices and the distribution’s SMART utility can show health data.
  4. Time the action that feels slow. If applications launch slowly even when plenty of RAM is available, or file transfers collapse after a short burst, storage performance or thermal throttling may be the limiting factor.

Keep at least enough free space for the operating system, updates and temporary files. The exact percentage depends on the operating system and workload, so do not treat a single free-space threshold as universal.

CPU and GPU utilization check

In Task Manager, Activity Monitor or your Linux monitor, watch CPU and GPU utilization during the slow operation. A processor or graphics chip running near full utilization while memory pressure is moderate points away from a RAM purchase. In a game, a graphics limitation is often more important than system memory. In video or 3D work, cooling and sustained CPU or GPU clocks can matter more than adding capacity.

Use symptoms to choose the first test

Observed symptom Low-cost test Likely first action
Memory pressure and paging recur during normal work Repeat the workload with unnecessary browser tabs and background apps closed Buy the minimum compatible RAM capacity that removes the pressure
Boot drive is nearly full but reports healthy status Archive old files and move a large library temporarily to another disk Add staged storage, often an external SSD, before replacing the internal drive
Drive health warnings, read errors or disappearing volumes Back up immediately and run the operating system or vendor diagnostic Replace the internal drive; capacity-only workarounds are not a fix
CPU or GPU remains at its limit while RAM is adequate Lower workload settings or test with a known lighter project Investigate CPU, GPU, cooling or software before buying memory or storage
Only file copying is slow and the interface is external USB Check the cable, port generation and enclosure temperature Improve the connection or enclosure before replacing a healthy drive

Should you upgrade RAM or SSD first?

Choose RAM first when your measured workload repeatedly exhausts available memory. Choose storage first when the drive is full, unhealthy or clearly limiting launches and file operations. If neither condition is present, defer both purchases; spending during a price spike on a component that is not the bottleneck gives little return.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Situation RAM-first decision SSD-first decision
Office work, light browsing and video calls Only if memory pressure appears with your actual tab and application mix Only if the boot drive is full, unhealthy or unusually slow
Gaming Only when the game and background applications exceed available memory Useful for capacity and load times; it does not replace a graphics upgrade when the GPU is the limit
Photo, video or 3D projects More memory can help when project size causes paging Fast, healthy working storage helps large media, but sustained CPU, GPU and cooling limits may dominate
Old laptop with one accessible bay Check whether memory is soldered and whether a spare slot exists before ordering Check whether the machine accepts a 2.5-inch SATA drive or an M.2 NVMe drive; the interfaces are not interchangeable

Buy minimum-viable RAM, not the largest kit

MSI’s 2026 guidance recommends selecting the minimum viable amount when prices exceed your budget, using 16GB or 32GB as practical examples. Treat those as starting points, not universal requirements. Buy 64GB or 128GB only when your measured applications demonstrably use that capacity or when a documented future workload justifies the cost.

RAM compatibility checklist

  • Identify the memory generation, such as DDR4 or DDR5. A module from one generation cannot be installed in a slot designed for another.
  • Check the motherboard or laptop manual for the maximum capacity, supported speeds and whether memory is soldered.
  • Count physical slots and note which are occupied. A two-module kit may require removing existing modules, while an open slot may permit an incremental addition.
  • Match the form factor: desktop DIMMs and laptop SO-DIMMs are different physical sizes.
  • Prefer a matched kit when replacing modules. Mixing capacities or timings can work, but it may reduce speed or create stability problems.
  • Confirm the return policy before opening packaging. Incompatibility is more expensive when a seller will not accept a return.

Lower the cost without creating instability

Close memory-heavy background software, reduce unnecessary browser tabs and remove startup applications before concluding that a larger kit is required. These changes do not increase physical capacity, but they can delay a purchase while prices are elevated. If a module upgrade is still justified, buy the smallest stable configuration that keeps your measured workload out of paging and leave room for a later module only if the board supports it.

Stage storage instead of replacing the internal drive immediately

Storage capacity and storage health are separate decisions. If the internal boot drive is healthy but full, keep it for the operating system and active applications, archive infrequently used files and add an external SSD for overflow, games or backup. If the internal drive is failing, replace it and restore from a verified backup; an external disk should not hide a failing boot device.

When an external SSD is the cheaper move

  • You need additional capacity without opening the PC.
  • Your large files, game libraries or project archives do not need to be on the boot volume.
  • You want a second copy for backup and can disconnect it after the backup completes.
  • Your computer has no accessible internal bay or opening it would risk a warranty.

An external USB SSD is easier to deploy, but it is not a universal replacement for every boot-drive workload. Real performance depends on the USB port generation, cable, enclosure controller, thermal behavior and the drive itself. Applications that require low latency, constant random access or uninterrupted operation may still be better on an internal drive.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When an internal SSD replacement is justified

  • The existing drive reports health warnings or errors.
  • You need a larger boot volume and external storage would disrupt the software or workflow.
  • The internal drive is the measurable performance bottleneck after checking RAM, CPU, GPU and cooling.
  • The system has a compatible bay, connector and firmware support for the replacement.

A 2.5-inch SATA drive does not fit an M.2 slot, and an NVMe module does not automatically work in a SATA-only socket. A 2.5-inch installation also needs the correct bay, mounting hardware, SATA data connection and power connector. Laptop layouts can use proprietary brackets or cables, so inspect the service manual before ordering.

Documented drive examples

Samsung’s March 2026 MSRP sheet lists the T7 1TB portable SSD with USB 3.2 Gen 2 and a three-year warranty. The same sheet lists the 870 EVO 1TB, a 2.5-inch SATA 6Gbps SSD with a five-year warranty. These are searchable model examples, not guaranteed prices or availability. Check the current listing, seller, country, warranty terms and return window immediately before purchase.

Safe storage-staging procedure

  1. Make a second copy of irreplaceable files before moving anything.
  2. Separate active projects from archives and identify which folders can live on external storage.
  3. Format the external drive with a file system supported by every computer that must access it.
  4. Move or copy data, then open representative files from the new location to verify integrity.
  5. Keep the backup disconnected or otherwise protected when it is not being updated.
  6. Replace the internal drive only after you have a verified backup and a plan to reinstall or clone the operating system.

Compare upgrade paths by total value

Do not compare a module’s sticker price with a complete PC’s price. Include adapters, mounting hardware, cloning or installation time, return shipping, warranty coverage and the value of a part that can move to a future system.

Upgrade path Upfront-cost evidence Compatibility questions Performance and capacity effect Installation risk Future reuse
Add or replace RAM No universal figure is established; live price varies by country, generation and capacity DDR generation, DIMM or SO-DIMM form factor, slot count, maximum capacity and supported speed Raises working-memory headroom; does not speed a CPU or GPU that is already the limit Usually low on a desktop; higher on compact laptops or soldered-memory systems Depends on the next system using the same memory generation and form factor
External USB SSD No universal figure is established; include cable or enclosure needs and current local pricing USB port generation, cable, operating-system support and enclosure thermals Adds portable capacity and can improve file or game load times; not ideal for every boot-drive workload Low because the computer need not be opened High across compatible computers and consoles, subject to port support
2.5-inch SATA SSD No universal figure is established; compare the drive, mounting parts and possible labor 2.5-inch bay, SATA data and power, firmware support and cloning method Replaces a SATA boot drive and adds capacity; cannot use an M.2-only system without the required hardware Moderate to high depending on access and migration Useful in another system with a 2.5-inch SATA bay
Refurbished or second-hand PC Compare the complete, warrantied system with the combined upgrade bill; local prices are volatile Operating-system license, ports, memory type, storage health and seller return terms May provide a newer CPU, GPU, memory and storage together Low installation risk, but inspection and data migration are essential The whole system can be retained or resold, while individual parts may be less reusable

Warranty duration is only one part of value. Confirm whether the warranty is provided by the manufacturer or seller, whether replacement is local, and whether opening a laptop affects coverage. Keep the receipt and record the drive serial number before installation.

Should you wait for prices to fall?

There is no guaranteed normalization date. PCWorld’s September 30, 2026 report did not expect meaningful relief before 2027, while the Office of Government Procurement described possible disruption lasting up to two years. Waiting can make sense when the computer is stable and the upgrade is optional; it is risky when a drive is failing or work is being lost to memory pressure.

Buy now when the cost of delay is higher

  • A storage-health warning, read error or disappearing volume threatens your data.
  • Paging repeatedly interrupts paid work, study or a deadline-driven project.
  • A short-lived local promotion brings a compatible part within your fixed budget and the return policy is clear.
  • The current system cannot run a required application at all without the upgrade.

Defer when the upgrade is cosmetic

  • The drive has ample verified health and free space.
  • Memory pressure is low during your real workload.
  • The slowdown is caused by CPU, GPU, cooling, software or network limits that the proposed part will not solve.
  • You expect to replace the entire computer soon and the part will not transfer to the replacement.

Set a review date rather than waiting indefinitely. Recheck local prices, stock and your workload at that date, but do not assume that a forecasted decline will occur on a particular month.

When a refurbished PC costs less than upgrading

Gartner identifies refurbished and second-hand buying as a likely response to sustained memory costs. A replacement becomes rational when the required RAM, SSD, adapter and labor approach the price of a newer system that already includes the needed capacity. Compare like with like: a low-cost PC with an unknown drive may simply move the risk rather than remove it.

Refurbished-system checklist

  • Ask for the exact CPU, GPU, RAM amount and memory generation, internal-drive model and capacity.
  • Request the drive-health status or a written guarantee that the storage passes diagnostics.
  • Confirm the operating-system activation status, included charger or power supply and all required ports.
  • Check the seller’s return period and warranty length in writing. A short testing window is especially important for second-hand systems.
  • Inspect photos or the device in person for liquid damage, missing screws, bent connectors and excessive dust.
  • Verify that the system supports your monitor connections, wireless standard, peripherals and software.
  • Price the complete setup, including shipping, a replacement battery for a laptop or a needed adapter.

A refurbished desktop with adequate RAM and a healthy SSD can avoid today’s component premium, but it may consume more power, lack modern expansion support or have a shorter warranty than a new model. The correct choice depends on the warranty-adjusted total cost and the consequences of downtime.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A purchase plan that minimizes cash outlay

  1. Write down the failing task. Name the application and operation that is slow instead of describing the whole computer as slow.
  2. Measure all four resources. Check RAM pressure, storage free space and health, CPU use and GPU use during that operation.
  3. Remove no-cost pressure. Close unnecessary applications, reduce startup load, clear safe temporary data and update the application or driver when an update is already available.
  4. Choose one bottleneck. Do not buy RAM and an SSD together unless measurements show both are limiting.
  5. Specify the smallest compatible part. Record DDR generation and form factor for RAM; record SATA or NVMe interface, bay size and USB generation for storage.
  6. Stage capacity. Use an external SSD for overflow, archives, games or backup when the internal boot drive is healthy, and reserve an internal replacement for health, capacity or sustained-performance limits.
  7. Compare total-system cost. Add installation, adapters, migration time, warranty and return risk. Compare that total with a warrantied refurbished system.
  8. Protect the data before installation. Verify a second backup and keep the original drive untouched until the new configuration is confirmed.
  9. Recheck after the upgrade. Repeat the same workload and confirm that the measured bottleneck changed. If it did not, stop buying parts and investigate the remaining limit.

Practical decisions by computer type

Everyday laptop with 8GB or 16GB

Use the memory-pressure test before assuming an upgrade is possible. Many thin laptops have soldered RAM or one inaccessible slot. If memory is adequate but the internal drive is full, an external SSD for archives and media can be cheaper and safer than opening the chassis. If the drive is failing, prioritize backup and a compatible internal replacement over capacity staging.

Gaming desktop with an open memory slot

Check whether the game, browser and voice-chat software together create sustained memory pressure. If not, an SSD may shorten load times while the GPU remains the frame-rate limit. Confirm the motherboard’s DDR generation and slot layout before adding a module, and compare a matched kit with an incremental upgrade after accounting for stability and return risk.

Creator workstation

Large projects can expose both memory and storage limits. Measure whether paging or drive capacity happens first, then upgrade only that component. Keep active projects on a healthy, fast internal volume when required, and use an external SSD for completed work and a separate backup. Sustained CPU or GPU utilization and cooling can still dominate export times after either upgrade.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

  • Buying by capacity alone: A larger RAM kit does not fix a GPU limit, and a larger SSD does not fix memory pressure. Tie every purchase to a measured symptom.
  • Mixing incompatible memory: Check generation, form factor, voltage and board limits before combining modules. Keep the original kit until the new one passes stability tests.
  • Assuming all M.2 drives are interchangeable: M.2 describes a shape; the system may require SATA or NVMe signaling. Verify the manual and keying.
  • Using an external SSD as the only backup: A portable drive can be lost, damaged or encrypted by malware while connected. Maintain another copy and disconnect the backup when practical.
  • Cloning without a recovery plan: Confirm the destination capacity, boot mode and recovery media before replacing an internal drive.
  • Ignoring thermals: An SSD or memory upgrade cannot correct CPU or GPU throttling caused by dust, a failed fan or inadequate cooling.
  • Comparing a part with a whole PC: Include labor, adapters, warranty, operating-system setup and downtime in both totals.
  • Waiting for a promised price date: Forecasts describe conditions, not a guaranteed retail calendar. Buy when the measured need and total value justify it.

Final decision

The lowest-cost strategy during a RAM and SSD price surge is usually diagnostic rather than speculative: prove the bottleneck, buy minimum-viable RAM, stage healthy storage with an external SSD where practical, and replace an internal drive only for a real health, compatibility or sustained-performance requirement. If the complete, warranty-backed upgrade bill approaches the price of a better refurbished PC, compare the systems instead of committing to several expensive parts. This approach preserves cash without betting your data or productivity on a market forecast.
